Your sense of proportion, depth, and scale create a gobsmacking realism. You could have done this painting in neon and your sense of proportion, depth, and scale would give it a sense of total realism. What I'm saying is I love you, would you be my father?
“By hiding a vanishing point behind someone’s head, you attract attention to that spot” I have never thought of this but it makes so much sense, what a great tip
And having worked with Gouache for a few months now, I feel he makes it look so much easier than it actually is, that stuff wants to dry so fast and I find it difficult to get good colour gradients when working with it.
In my humble view, the only other artist I have seen operate as Mr.Gurney do is, artist the late, Me. Ken Auster. These two gentlemen, as I stated earlier, in my view, are two pillars that tower above most artists I've researched so far online and social media. God's blessed them tremendously.I.want to be blessed so too.
I can watch this guy for hours - watching that incredible level of detail emerge either inspires me or makes me want to throw my paints away - depends on the day! Fantastic
For a guy who doesnt paint like me its really like watching magic happening. How you give perspective and life with a few hits here and there. And the result is incredible everytime.
I don't know why, but American supermarkets are aesthetically pleasing, I just enjoy looking to see what types of colors they use while my mom goes to get cereal like brown, light brown, red, white (lots of it). I just really enjoy observing the things that almost no one realizes adds to the experience
nuts and bolts It seems like it was in the late ‘90s when they started trying out the whole “hey why don’t we make this place look nice” idea. Before that it was white or beige everywhere with maybe a “brand” color like red or blue. There’s a nostalgic feel to those beige and red stores, but I definitely go for the dark lighting, wood toned modern stores.
There are some neat articles you can Google that came out a few years ago about the research into the best color temperature lighting to show off produce and such. I remember a thing about different temps used in the meat department, which primarily had red merchandise, versus produce, which had a lot of green.
Love American grocery stores and health food stores (they are smaller and more old-timey than the slick, clean supermarkets). They also attract more interesting characters there, too!
You are just delightful! I love watching you paint....bingeing several of your tutorials (almost all of which I’ve purchased) is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a rainy day when I don’t really feel like painting. Every time I watch any of your videos, no matter how often I’ve seen it before, I learn something new or am reminded of something I had forgotten. Thanks for sharing your expertise so generously and so often amusingly!
I ALWAYS learn something new from your painting videos, Mr. Gurney. Folks, if you dont own his book Color & Light, you NEED to pick it up. It's literally the best book on the subject. You will learn so much from it.
So happy to find this. Several times I have taken pictures of little kids in the grocery store with the thought of them being a painting. I have the habit of trying to put you much detail. I hope to now give them a try. One is a little bit with a great hat, picking produce. The other is a delightful little girl walking away pushing her little grocery cart.
Ridiculous.... what skill. It almost makes me want to give up painting myself seeing what's possible. LOVE the style of James' work but never had the opportunity to see it up close being in the UK. Its like watching someone knock out a symphony in real time.... appreciate the videos so much. ✌🏽
there’s so much experience and instinct, it’s so cool how he knows what to do with every stroke, it feels very efficient, well planned out and spontaneous at the same time :0
Yet again I watch one of your videos and I see you paint, I see you mix colours and yet by some kind of voodoo the scene magically appears in front of me and I'm at a loss to how you did it. I'm starting to think you are a wizard of some sort masquerading as a human. I'm on to you Gurney!
I like to watch your videos twice - once to see you paint the thing, and the other time to watch your palette (how much paint you use, hone in on your color mixes, etc). Such a valuable experience! Thank you
This is one of the best "watercolor tutorials court I've seen on the Internet. LOL not getting caught up in the details Capturing the big shapes awesome I really love your work.
An absolute master, in my top ten favourite modern day artists, Scott Robertson mentioned you in a video when he was using Gouache and I had seen your work briefly, I’m completely hooked, what a talent and inspiration you are, thank you for sharing your talent with us.
James , you are out of this world and such an inspiration. Thank you for the video and information. Blessings and be safe. An awesome idea much appreciated during this time.
I must have been living under a rock to have never heard of casein paint! I had to look them up, and now I might need to find some to try out. Your painting skills are pure mastery, this is a lovely picture! 💜
Stunning. I’m in awe of your relaxed approach, James. I paint tightly and methodically and, unsurprisingly, my work looks dead. Your paintings are alive. How can I relax and not be so afraid of making mistakes?
You are an amazing artist! At first I thought you were painting with watercolor then I saw your palette and I thought it was acrylic. I have never heard of casein paint before. I loved this painting!
I fell in love with painting in college, but then fell out of practice after I graduated, switching to digital art since I no longer had a studio to work in. I really enjoy the way you walked us through your process; it felt comfortable and familiar, similar the way I used to work through mine. I'm remembering techniques I left behind when I no longer knew how to achieve them in digital, and now with more experience in that, I wonder if I can bring those into the work I do now. Lovely video, and lovely painting! I'll be sticking around to watch more for sure. :)
Thank you for posting this, love watching you paint, the sound of the brush on the board, love the way you make your videos. I highly recommend the flower video, the rose at NYBG.
Really liked the way you filled in the Artichoke sign, not done anything like that before. I do most lettering in my own work freehand like that, not as well but then that comes with practice.
James, I thoroughly love your videos and really glad that I came here after a recent reread of Dinotopia. I really enjoy watching you paint and your explanations. I might even dive in myself one day!
James, thank you and Jeanette for helping me become a painter. I may have a tip that keeps Casein "live" longer than it wants to: a drop or two of glycerin, a humectant, into each paint puddle. I've tested it for a week and with plastic wrap on top of the palette I'm stll able to add water and paint. It takes a bit longer to dry but when it does it is impermeable. Roberta
I've just recently discovered your videos. I've been drawing for years with pencil and ink. I've used Japanese brush pens in monochrome. I'm pretty good, too, if I do say so myself. I've always wanted to do watercolor and your videos have given me an understanding of the framework to build a painting. Thank you this is very helpful.
I swear he's one of the best painters on UA-cam.
He for sure is
He's one of the greatest painters of our age. While his claim to fame is his work as an illustrator for Dinotopia, he's still criminally underrated.
Matekya. He indeed is. Remember, he’s also the author :)
He's a living legend
But underrated :/
It speaks volumes that even in the thumbnail sketch there's a certain photographic effect to his tones and values.
Yeah it's called rhythm. And it's mathematical. Bridgman's much?
tones are values - same

Ha, thank you. Someone called me "America's Art Dad." Now do your homework and take out the garbage!
@@JamesGurney I SO did not expected the "homework and take out the garbage" part! This is a punch line! 🤣
Lol
If I knew it was that easy to get an art Dad it have asked years ago
@@JamesGurney Now, would you be my grandad?
“By hiding a vanishing point behind someone’s head, you attract attention to that spot”

One of the few artists who can paint ANYTHING, literally.
And having worked with Gouache for a few months now, I feel he makes it look so much easier than it actually is, that stuff wants to dry so fast and I find it difficult to get good colour gradients when working with it.

You must see kim Jung GI then!

Your lettering alone makes me run into a wall.

It's crazy
I've been drawing since little and i'm absolutely astonished by his skill.

Wish you were my neighbor. You like markets, I don't. I'd beg you to go pick up a few things today.
From today, you are my teacher.🙋♀️
I'm lucky to find this channel.
I bought paint a few days ago.
I will study while watching this video. Thank you~
How’s your progress?
My day instantly gets better whenever there is a new James Gurney video on my feed. Thank You!
Oh YEAH. Me, too.
Love how simply you captured your wife's glasses, genius!
This dude is on another level. Casually doing stuff that seems impossible.

Thank you.
You definitely love impressionism :)

Unreal. How do you not feel overwhelmed? Terrific
The extremely vibrant gamut of colors really gives it a photographic affect
It suddenly went super realistic and hit me really hard! I love it!

It amazes me how your able to form an actual picture with just some sketching
I really appreciated you doing that breakdown of the thumbnail and sharing how you altered the photo to make improvements on the composition.
Always that I see these amazing UA-cam channels like this, I feel very pleased to have born in this age
Absolutely lovely 💜 Look at those artichokes!
Wow the amount of detail. It came out so beautiful and I like how it shows today's life with having to wear a mask all the time.
Wow! Another wonderful video packed with wisdom.
Full control of proportions and space.
The gesture safe, precise and fast. The mastery is total.
I literally come to tears every time I watch you paint, sir. Thank you for being a great part of our artist mind! All love from Lebanon 🇱🇧
I love your painting James! It’s all fantastic but I particularly admire the way the shirt is done. Thanks for sharing. Jill, UK,
