    To those who says Jaime is a terrible fighter:
    If you read the book you would understand that Jaime has been sitting in chains imprisoned for over a year, with no real norishment or drink. His hands are also chained in this scene.
    In the book you read that Brienne is amazed by Jaimes skills even when chained and broken down for 1 year without eating. In the book they fight for a long time and he almost beats her.
    He truly is one of the best sword fighters in the series.
    On the other hand,
    I would say that Bronn is one of the most deadly sword fighters, due to his dangerous technique.

      blazeblase yeah I mean Brienne is a good fighter but we have only seen her fight renown fighters that are down on their luck, here the man is chained, been in prison for a year, has his hands chained together, and doesnt even have ARMOR. and our good ol Hound they SPECIFICALLY showed that scene with him getting bitten and refusing the ol fire treatment. just to bring him down enough for her to be able to beat him. and you know her being in better condition in regards to just traveling goes.

      "Couldn't beat old man Stark" - the fight ended prematurely. also ned isn't a lot older than jaime.
      "Couldn't beat bad luck Brienne" - he was prisoner for over a year, badly nourished and out of shape. plus, his hands were tied together.
      "Couldn't beat the soldiers who captured him" - he was captured first in a war against almost Robb's whole army. Then, he was captured by Bolton men (shown in this video) numbering in the tens. Jaime is the best swordsman in all the land, not superman. Logically even the best of the best can't take on 50 people at once.
      Yes, Jaime was the best swordsman in all the land.

    I'm a woman and a huge fan of Brienne. I still think she is OP on the show, especially since she's nowhere near as muscular as she is supposed to be. Love Gwendoline though.
    But to all those saying that she's average or not great in the books - you're wrong. Jaime admits that she is good, better than most, though not as good as him. She also has a freakishly masculine physique (probably due to a hormone imbalance) meaning she would probably be quite close to the strength level of a man her own size (at least 6'4"), and stronger than most shorter men. There are quite a few warriors in the series who could beat her, but Brienne is still an amazing fighter.

    • @itinerantpoet1341

      Straight sword is a finesse weapon. In China, it was typically associated with woman fighters, because they had less brute strength. Barristan Selmy could take any swordsman of his generation, entirely based on skill, not size, strength or age. This is the art of straight sword, the great equalizer before the Colt 45.

    This fight isn't better or worse than what was in the books, its simply different. Those complaining that Brienne beat Jamie seem to have forgotten Jamie has been locked up for months and is in shackles. Also the fact Brienne is a fucking badass.

      @ArvelDreth 8 років тому +2

      It's worse because they elevate Brienne beyond what is reasonable and they make supposedly one of the best fighters in Westeros, possibly tied with Sandor and Gregor, a pushover. In fact, they made Brienne in the show better than Jaime, better than Sandor, and probably better than Gregor. They make her better than basically everyone.

    • @dynamicworlds1

      More that the show lets people be handicapped.
      It doesn't matter if one person is "better" than the other if it isn't an even fight.
      ...also doesn't help that Jamie's actor just can't look natural with a sword IMO, so they're doing the best they can with what they have I think.
      They're doing a reasonable job getting decent fight scenes out of him in spite of it, but it really limits their ability to show Jamie's skill on screen.

      It's not about making Brienne seem good it's they made Jaime seem bad. Brienne is in awe during their fight about how strong Jaime is when he was in a weakened state and proclaims if he were unchained and healthy he'd be an unstoppable force. In this Jaime is seen as feeble and weak.

    In the books even Jamie was impressed by Brienne. It is written “she is stronger than me. And the realization frightened him” something like that. Brienne also sees that he is good. And they both start to respect each other. That is why I like this story line. The fact he knighted her in season 8 goes to show how much he believes in her and respects her as a fighter and a person. Yes he was chained and starved and wasn’t at his best but he still was better than a lot of fighters.

    • @Kal911
      @Kal911 5 років тому +4

      Don’t Know he speaks about her muscles not her skill. In the books Jaime is by far better than her even with his feet chained, but he was in his worst shape and couldn’t last long. That realisation frightened him because there were already a lot of swordsmen stronger than him, like the hound and the mountain, but he could defeat every single one of them with speed and skill.

    What was Jamie thinking? It's his fault they got captured bc he decided to waste time and then engage brienne. But brienne had already told him she would take him to Kings landing so why did Jamie decide to fight and try and kill her? Did he at this point already decide that he would not live up to his word and not honor the pact he and catelyn made about returning her daughters? And if that's the case and he never intended to keep his word, why not wait until they reach the red keep, then turn around snd have brienne killed. The plot armor is thick with this scene for sure

      Nathaniel Kadetz It is stated in the books that Jaime is a man with a severe lack of patience who didn't spend too much time thinking his actions through (e.g. His sorry loss in the Whispering Wood, attacking Eddard Stark, etc.) Somewhat like Catelyn, he's driven more by his passions than wit. At this moment, there's two things he craves deeply: the feel of a sword in his hands to drive away the feeling of helplessness as Brienne's captive (keep in mind his ego), and more importantly, he thirsts for Cersei's juicy cunt. Sure, Brienne is getting him there, but at a torturously slow and boring pace. On his own, he would've stolen a fucking horse and sped for King's Landing. Brienne is too cautious for his taste. All of these, coupled with his lack of patience and his brother's cunning and foresight, Jaime saw his chance to at least test Brienne's skills and hopefully, escape her. He didn't think the entire thing through but once he got that sword in his hands, there was no turning back from there.

    It'd be wrong not acknowledge Brienne's skill here. Yes, Jaime Lannister is the best and is weakened in his condition, but he is still a renowned swordsman. Brienne is a well-trained fighter who was able to defeat Loras, another extremely skilled swordsman. Look at her waiting for Jaime to strike; she watches him very closely, and adjusts the placement of her feet and sword in order to counter his movements. She is a trained warrior, and that shows. Jaime Lannister himself compliments her attention to movement. And once again, even in a compromised state, Jaime Lannister can fight, and fight well. Please do not underestimate Brienne's skill.

She's so amazed by his fighting ability at half strength that she states at full strength he would be unstoppable - no knight in the seven kingdoms could stand against him. I believe you are wrong.
      First, we never read the book in Brienne's perspective, so we dont know if she ever was "so amazed by his fighting ability." Second, we should not forget that Brienne defeated Ser Loras, who was considered being a formidable swordsman even in the eyes of Jaime. Third, Jaime (whos perspective the reader is enjoying while reading about this fight) acknowledges Brienne's fighting capability and her endurence and stubborness quiet often. All in all i grant the Kingslayer being one of the best swordsmen in Westeros. He won many tourneys, defeated many opponents in single combat and fought in many battles. But right here he is weakened (after rotting in the dungeons for quiet a while), chained and unarmored. I would yawn and be bored as fuck if directors decided to play the "oh yes, J. is super-human awesome and shit"-card. He is good with swords and enjoyable in the show. because he is HUMAN. human in so many ways...

    • @snakeguy8646
      @snakeguy8646 8 років тому +1

      StrangeTickingNoise The problem we have is that it made Brienne seem to defeat Jaime with no problem, I would have liked something a little like the books, I mean, in the book Jaime reflects on how he may be tired and such but may be able to take her down, and he gets close to it, he even injures her, but here... No, Brienne just blocks him and then blocks his last swing to where he comically collapses while Brienne expects to fight the Brave Companions... At least, that's how I saw this.

    Jaime was weak from prison, and tires over the course of the fight. Brienne's increasing confidence as she realizes this, and how she winds down the engagement, make this one of the finest examples of European sword choreography yet produced.

    • @itinerantpoet1341
      @itinerantpoet1341 2 роки тому +1

      Jaime is one of the most feared swordsmen in the 7 kingdoms, with perhaps only Barriston Selmy considered superior. Brienne starts out terrified, not thinking she can win. The realization that she can is communicated via the choreography, accompianed by excellent acting. This is similar to Michelle Yeoh vs. "that girl" in the hall in Crouching Tiger.

      Samantha Bayley loras is one of the best, if not the best in horse duels. Hes above average when it comes to sword fighting but jaime 'was' one of the best in sword fighting. There were very few who could top him. Loras Tyrell doesn't even come close to Jaime, he might be able to survive some minutes but dies either way. If you want a Tyrell to fight for you, you have better luck with Garlan Tyrell

Instead of slicing his legs or skewering him in the back, the 4 people (including those behind him) just stood off.

    Brienne is cool af. I already knew how great jaime was and even if it was like three sentences, we still heard him critiquing her fighting. Many say this downplayed jaime but its pretty clear in this scene that if he was in a healthier state, hs would have won. He was shown doing well at first and even threw quips at her, it's a good scene. Brienne is a good character and I liked that she pushed him at the end like it was effortless. It didnt make jaime look like a poor swordsman as some of these ppl are commenting tho. It's pretty clear brienne took his condition and used it to her advantage and finished the fight quickly cuz Locke was already coming towards them

    Just casually scrolling through this comment board, I can see how much it drives most people crazy that Brienne of Tarth is portrayed as a fighter on par with, if not better than the likes of Jamie Lannister and Sandor Clegane. I can't find it in myself to be similarly bothered. I actually love it and can't get enough of it. I can hear the protests: "But the books! The books!!! The BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!" I hate to disappoint you, but the books are no less made up than the show. Fictional they both began, and fictional they will both end. That being irrefutably the case, I leave it to each of you to consider the very real possibility that you just hate the idea of a woman besting a man in an activity seen as having something of a "manopoly." While I appreciate your loyalty to possibility and plausibility, where were you when you were actually needed? How about Melisandre's shadow baby? Why aren't you angry about that? Surely, it is much harder to believe that a woman could birth a shadow baby than that Brienne could best Jamie and Sandor in battle. Oh? You mean your anger doesn't have anything to do with loyalty to probability---to truth, even? Ah, so you're a misogynist then. Thanks for clearing that up for me. :)
    Or, maybe you just have the hots for Jamie. That, I can understand. But, I would encourage you not to let penis bias cloud your judgment.

      You were surely offended. You're right, both the books and the show are fictional stains in our reality, but you have to know the show originates from the books. If you'd only learn about the lore of Game of Thrones, you'd know why most are irritated at the fact that Jaime was bested. Just do yourself the favor and educate yourself on a topic you're going to shit on.

    • @aaronthacker8209

      Notice, though, that I never said I hadn't read the books. Everything I said in my previous comment is compatible with me having read each and every book. So, you really haven't addressed my point in any serious way. And, I do wonder whether you are actually the more offended one. Perhaps not, but your last sentence does seem to give it away in something of a condescending way. There is another way you could interpret my comment that is more accurate to my intentions--satire!!! If I were to have just said this out loud in a public place, I might have tried to deliver it in a way that someone like Bill Hicks or George Carlin would have. Put differently, this comment was intended to get people to reflect on their views by way of a delivery that was meant to poke fun a little. Arguments can be couched in many forms. I happen to like satire, but, as you see in this comment here, I can use other, more subdued forms, as well.

So, at this point, there is no more need for discussion. Good day to you.

      Honestly, I scrolled through the comments too. All I see is people being disappointed on Jaime's part. And those people are even dumber. Sure, Brienne is a skilled fighter. On average scale she's unbeatable. But Jaime and Sandor have been fighting all their lives, and they are much more skilled. The reason they were beat was due to their bad conditions, and Brienne always being in good shape. I saw someone in the comment section calling Jaime a bitch because "Durr! He lost to a woman, haha!" ""Brienne remembered her fight with Jaime Lannister in the woods. It had been all that she could do to keep his blade at bay. He was weak from his imprisonment, and chained at the wrists. No knight in the Seven Kingdoms could have stood against him at his full strength, with no chains to hamper him. Jaime had done many wicked things, but the man could fight! His maiming had been monstrously cruel. It was one thing to slay a lion, another to hack his paw off and leave him broken and bewildered. - AFFC - Brienne I""
    In the books Brienne recalls, how Jaime almost got the best of her, fighting in chains, after being starved for years. That last fight of Jaime with Brienne was to set the tone for what comes after. To emphasize what his right hand meant for him.
    The fight in the show did absolute injustice to this whole chain of thoughts.

      Benjamin m Ffs, did you even read what I typed out? Book-readers (like you) assume the show will be a copy of what happens in the books... it's not "fucking up a scene", it's CHANGING the scene.

    • @supremeworld87
      @supremeworld87 8 років тому +6

      Yeah did you read mine? I just fucking told you that the show took a scene from the books - a memorable scene - and changed it so it's a cliche and the opposite of what the author was trying to convey. The intent of the scene was not to show FEMALE POWER!! Look how badass Brienne is she's better than Jaime after that shit talking he was doing! It was meant to show that sword in hand Jaime Lannister is every bit as deadly as the rumours suggest and the only reason she survives is because he's weakened and chained at the wrist. The show implies Jaime is overrated, which is wrong. Therefore by CHANGING the scene for the show they have fucked it up. So we 'book readers' - I'll have you know the show was my introduction to the series but the books are just better - have a right to complain and will. In all honesty these guys shouldn't have been picked to adapt the books

Martells killed off, the 'bad poosey' ruling Dorne, how Stannis was villainised in the last season, how Jaime completely got rekt here and so on. And not to mention the fucking cliffhanger of the tower of joy.They're truning this show into a cliché cliffhanger series. And people like you put up with it.

    Seriously? You of all people? You, who were trained by Ser Arthur Dayne who also used two swords and was known as the best swordfighter in all Westeros? You don't understand that need? ...ok, then...
    Shit, even if he wasn't trained by Arthur Dayne, he would have still known about him and his famous reputation. That should be enough to explain why some knights carry two swords.
    Sure, Brienne isn't one of those dualwielding specialists, so she wouldn't have need of a second sword but SOME knights need two because they ARE dualwielding specialists and Jaime should know that, having learned how to fight by one of them.

The characters are less unlikable, a lot of characters and plot points I don't care about are removed (Dorne, Tyrion with Aegon, the dicking around with most plot points).
