I still remember when sailor moon was dubbed into English they made edits and cuts to make sailor Neptune and sailor Uranus cousins. I could tell something was off so I looked it up online and saw in the original anime they were partners and lovers. Then Sailor stars was supposedly never dubbed because they didn't knew how american audiences would handle the sailor stars being one gender when transformed (female) and disguised as another when not transformed on earth (male).

The video is implying that she was always a lesbian or coded as such and that is simply untrue. She was created in the 1960's and, because of the prevailing mindset, it is almost certain that she was not designed to be queer in any way shape or form.
Now Scooby Doo has many different versions and iterations that are always exploring new takes on the character. Because of this, it's impossible to say there is a "definitive" or "canon" version of the character that applies across all continuities. In some versions Velma is sarcastic, in other versions she's timid. Sometimes she's white, but one time she was Asian. This variation can, theoretically, also apply to her sexuality.
So it is theoretically possible for Velma to be straight in one continuity and gay or bi in another. But again, at best this only applies to that specific continuity. You can't say Mystery Incorporated Velma is gay and therefore Velma in all Scooby Doo media is gay, to assert so would simply be untrue.
So now the question is has Velma ever been labeled as queer in any official Scooby Doo media. And the answer to this is honestly no. The closest they got was in Mystery Incorporated where a producer said Velma was gay 7+ years after the show finished airing.
Now there is debate about whether something is official if it's confirmed outside the show in a tweet or interview. In my book, the answer is no, if you want something to be canon it needs to explicitly be proven in the show. Not to mention anyone can say something after the fact, but that doesn't mean it was true when that product was actually airing.
But even if you don't have a view on canon as strict as me, I think labeling Velma as gay in a social media post completely defeats the point of representation. Representation is about seeing yourself or other people in media and if you need to reveal the truth 7 years later for people to realize that a character was written as gay, that's not representation. Because the fact is, there was nothing in that show that ever confirmed Velma was gay. Ironically, the show makes a much stronger case for Velma being straight given how much screentime is dedicated to showing her relationship with Shaggy.
So that is my absurdly long comment about Velma and the whole issue of her being gay. Will Velma be written as gay in the future? Maybe. In fact, WB has hinted that's the plan. But has she been written as gay before? A _very_ generous kinda. At best, Velma was written with the intention of being gay in a single iteration of the tv show but it was so poorly communicated that you wouldn't know it just by watching the show.
*TL;DR You cannot label Velma as gay because there are many versions of her and the video is not approaching the issue with enough nuance. In many versions, Velma is straight. At best, the character was gay in a single tv show but even that is debatably canon.*

Well, considering that many Western cartoons have an age rating of 6+, it is not surprising that parents and adults are outraged, because initially companies create a product in order to make money, and money is hard to earn when you risk getting sued by Karens, if cartoons were originally made for teenagers, there would be less outrage, however, this will not happen, because it is difficult to shake the wallet from the teenagers and adults.

What's different between now than 30 years ago is we must accept that these people exist and not persecute them. I've watched gay shows before and enjoyed them because they are good shows.
If a gay man wants to act out the flamboyant stereotypical gay character then that's his choice. The way I see it today is that straight people have accepted gay men, however there is still hostility towards lesbian women. I cringe when I see other straight men making lesbian jokes, they are just not funny.
Most straight people think trans people are basically drag queens, probably because the only experience we have of them is seeing drag queens in gay clubs (yes, straight people go to gay clubs too).
I can't comment on non binary / gender fluid, you hear so much about them but I've never actually met one. I think this group will be the hardest for people to accept because despite what the media say, they are extremely rare. It's not that we won't ever accept them, it's just that we don't understand them.

YESSS thank you I'm glad you as a straight man can see this too...gay men are so much more accepted and well represented in media than lesbians it's strange but i think it has something to do with people still holding some sort of entitlement over women's body.

I’m sorry about that, some parents can be cruel and bring wrongly presented religion over their childs happiness. And It’s okay to vent of course! It’s a hurtful memory and similiar things have happened to me ever since I’ve been partially open to my parents as a lesbian, its good to write out what bothers you and it’s good that you did. It’s been a month but I hope you’re okay. You’re valid

I don't normally comment but seeing a lot of dense people here I have to share my thoughts:
Being gay or lgbtq isn't inherently sexual y'know... just like being straight isn't automatically sexual. Whenever you see a girl crushing on a boy do you go "oh no stop it you're shoving it in everyone's faces". Having crushes on people at a young age is normal and healthy to have. You get to learn about your different relationships with others; and it's not like that boy and girl are gonna automatically end up dating right? It's just normal to show kids that "it's ok to have interest in other people, and have feelings of love for them, someday when you're older you'll find that person to share that interest with". How come it all suddenly comes to a stop when queer kids come into the equation? There are such things as queer kids too, yknow. Why can't *they* be considered normal?
Please reevaluate why you think this way and become humble enough to have the compassion to educate yourself. You can end up spitting the same rhetoric that homophobes and transphobes preach that send us backward. The reason lgbtq characters are important in children's animation is to show that is normal for these people to exist; most importantly, that it's normal for kids who ARE lgbtq the exist as they are. Kids learn about straight, crushes, straight relationships, straight marriages at a fairly young age... so why not queer ones? I promise, kids are more intelligent than you think.
(Also this is coming from a person who's country their from is doesn't support same-sex relationships or gender non-conforming people; I know people like me need this more than you do)

    • @clemtoe
      @clemtoe 3 роки тому +5

So, what's happened here is that you've become confused. The language used in normalization is designed to do that. Allow me to break it down for you.
"Homophobia" is a nonsense word. Correctly transliterated, it would mean "fear of the same". A "homophobe" would be someone who is frightful of people who are like themselves. Of course that's not what the word is supposed to mean. It's supposed to mean fear of people who are different, or something like that. And of course the accusation isn't of fear, but of "hate".
"Heterosexual" is also a silly word because it's redundant. There is nothing denoted by it which isn't denoted in the root word "sex". "Sex" means sexual difference. So, union between male and female is the only sexual "orientation" which is describable as sexual. The only purpose for the word "Heterosexual" is to prefigure a false paradigm by which normal sexuality lies as a point on a gradient coequal with "homosexuality", a word for same-sex eroticism, which is in fact anti-sexual. But there isn't a gradient between these points. There is a dichotomy of 97% normal sexuality and 3% disordered erotic fixations. This normal condition is therefore attacked by the champions of abnormality with another nonsense word, "heteronormativity".
"Heteronormativity" is the word cultural arsonists use to problematize normal sexuality. They posit that an injustice is evident in the way children may freely be exposed to images and messaging which normalizes normal sexuality: Things like mom sleeping in the same bed as dad and marriages and girls kissing boys and male-female dance couples and so forth. Why, they demand to know, is it not so for men kissing men or men performing drag or worse. It's not so confounding in reality. "Heterosexuality" is, quite simply, the method by which the human species reproduces. It is not a "kink" or a fetish or a deviation from health and normalcy as "homosexuality" is. One may as well ask why fisting isn't as socially privileged as respiration.
With all that understood, perhaps it's clearer that, for people who socially identify themselves by their aberrant erotic fixations, reference to their secondary social identities as such are references to their aberrant erotic fixations.

So, if you are reading this, you came to the wrong part of the comments section. There are people who like to write essays around here. Why? Good question.
The first guy could've simply said that heterosexual childhood crushes are considered fine, so why aren't gay crushes? However, he choose to use about 3 paragraphs. So unnecessary. I think he makes a good point, except for that I don't like the idea of LGBT so he must be wrong.
The second guy took it way overkill. He wrote about 10 paragraphs. Just to simply say he disagrees and the first guy is wrong. However, I am not sure if that is what he said in the end since it was too long to read.
These guys must be on computers, typing up thier college entry essays here. It doesn't matter, just prepare to see lots of "Too Long, Didn't Read" comments or "TLDR" comments. Or from the extra lazy, expect the comment "T" Because this was too long to read.

@@clemtoe he might not be confused but you are certainly confusing him. lol. You can't be a good debater if you don't see things from the opponents viewpoint. Humans (or neologists or whatever) create new words to convey a meaning that cannot be extracted by already existing words. What you were doing in your whole essay was breaking down the terms/words to create new meanings out of them. And when you tried to do that you *confused* yourself even more.
Now, here are the things which are most probably wrong in your reply:
      1. Homophobia has been defined as "fear, hatred or discomfort with people who are gay". While it does seem like it is some sort of anxiety disorders like arachnophobia or acrophobia, it might not always be associated with it. Like I said, there is no point in arguing if its a non sense word or not. Its definition matters. Besides, there are plenty of other words in english which don't really mean what they seem to convey.
      2. Hetersexual isn't redundant. Let me explain this by an example. Centuries ago, mathematicians used to think a number can be either rational (1.23, 0.99(bar)) or irrational (pi, e). Then after some people started giving meaning to numbers like sqrt(-1), mathematicians realised there is a whole set of new numbers whose inclusion can solve many problems. They called them "imaginary numbers". _Now that we have imaginary numbers, what would we classify rational+irrational numbers as?_ Inclusion of new numbers became the necessity to classify rational+irrational numbers as Real numbers! The same thing happened with the inclusion of term homosexual as classifying others as heterosexual. So I don't think its redundant.
      3. Have you ever met a gay person irl? You frequently used the words like "anti-sexual", " disordered erotic fixations", "abnormality", "fetish", "deviation" as attributes of homosexuality. If you met any gay person did you find these attributes inside them? There are many examples of lgbt people who have contributed to the development of society as much as other straight people.
Like Alan Turing who gave us the algorithms and computational strategies by his Turing Machine, most of which have been used to create today's computers and this digital world. Tell me how he could have done this if he was abnormal or deviated?
Tim Cook present Ceo of Apple inc. since 2011. Tell me how he has been running the company for so long if he's been subject to disordered erotic fixations and fetishes? Certainly you are wrong somewhere my dear.
Sally Ride an Astronaut and a physicist, who also did researches on nonlinear optics and thomson scattering. Tell me how she was able to do all of this just like any other straight person, if according to you, her mind was polluted by sexually stuffs and deviations?
Freddie Mercury, of course, I don't need to tell you who he was. How could such a good person write such beautiful songs if according to you, he is abnormal?
What I have come to conclusion is that you are biased, blinded and inexperienced. Biased in the way that you never have took time to think from any single gay's perspective. Inexperienced in the sense that you never actually have any real life experience with lgbt person, blinded by the adult websites you spend time scrolling through to get orgasm, and concluding that all gays are like those pornstars.
sry if I said anything wrong. thx for reading. :)
