  • Pixar gets its characters to move and emote by building them rigs and filling them with controls that allow animators to give them unique expressions and movements. "Toy Story 2" gave them the ability to adapt and reuse rigs for multiple characters, allowing a wide array of characters of all shapes and sizes. In "Finding Nemo," animators learned how to make fish show emotions despite their lack of eyebrows. Major breakthroughs occurred during "The Incredibles," in which animators now had the capability to give humans muscles and skin that moved like the real thing, eventually allowing "Ratatouille" to stretch the human mouth far and control a character's loose movements. Meanwhile in "Cars," a new technology called ground locking let cars drive on a straight path, while new stretchy rigs were created for realistic octopus tentacles in "Finding Dory" and an especially dynamic dog tongue in "Coco." Thanks to new features, like the ability to add tendons onto hands and a digital piano that played by itself, Pixar was able to show complex piano playing. None of it would have been possible without the animation and rigging breakthroughs that came before it.

I'm now doing an animation course, and let me tell you, being a 3D animator is TOUGH.
I struggled terribly even understanding the basics of 3D. 2D animation thrives on exaggeration, but 3D thrives on subtlety. Even if you character stops for one second in a 3D animation, it looks extremely unnatural. You have to be extremely patient and observant, and have a really good understanding of timing. I absolutely died trying the basics, and probably will never pursue 3D, but damn do I have a newfound respect for 3D animators

We don’t exactly hahah, when animating a scene, you usually “Cheat” some things in the shot to make it look better but only for a specific camera angle, if you turn the camera to another angle, you could be looking at a super broken animation that resembles more a Picasso painting than a human hahaha thats why its so important to do storyboards and CG layouts before animating

As someone working on Animation movies, I appreciate this a lot. I only ever animated and rigged inanimate objects but character animators are the real artists to me. They can make the most boring scene hilarious and the most epic one fall flat. I'm usually in the compositing department, so I make the end result prettier but that rarely can make or break a scene. Good animators and the engineers that support them (and of course often both in one person) deserve a lot of recognition.

That would arguable be easier and cheaper funny enough.
Because with pen and paper, you have absolute freedom to drawing anything, whilst using reference to help you visualize the concept.
Whereas for the computers, you are now restricted to the tools you have. You are boxed in the mechanics those tools provide, due to the algorithm and the engine build into those software.
Basically its like walking vs car.
Walking takes a long time to get to a place. But you can hike hills, climb mountains, cut through a garden for a shortcut, doesn't take any other resources, etc.
Whereas cars are much more robust and faster, they are expensive to create and buy, have limitations on navigating various terrains, though the increase of technology certainly is helping it improve and get better.

I just rewatched the Toy Story series, and the differences are jaw-dropping. Toy Story (1995) is still a great film, because it's built on a solid story and characters in which you feel invested. But the human characters, especially the kids, look just as stiff as the toys. The facial expressions are creepy. By the second movie (1999) they could give the human antagonist a lot of screen time, and it looked just fine. By Toy Story 3 (2010) the teenage Andy had a fully expressive face, and could pull off complex emotions. With Inside Out and Soul, you can completely suspend your disbelief and see the characters as real people. Nobody beats Pixar at this.

Exactly. Don’t get me wrong, I do think that Western animation has been taken over by CGI and I wish that traditional animation had more love, but ALL animation, whether it’s traditional, CGI, or stop-motion, is hard work and gorgeous to see when done amazingly well. ❤️

I used to work at a science museum that featured a limited-time “how it’s made” Pixar exhibit. (It was called “the Science Behind Pixar”, maybe some of you have been to it.)
The gallery showed the animation steps Pixar takes with every film (Concept art, modelling, rigging, surfaces, sets and cameras, animation, simulations, lighting, and rendering). The gallery also talked about some unique challenges that each department faced during certain movies, such as Sulley’s fur from Monsters Inc. or Merida’s curly hair from Brave.
Since I was there so much, I became really familiar with the gallery, and holy smokes, these people work so insanely hard. Regardless of the writing of some of their films, the animation deserves your applause.
