Man's search for meaning by Viktor Frankl expands on this idea beautifully. If you are pursuing something meaningful then you don't need happiness (or pleasure) because you'll get more than enough satisfaction from your purpose. And you don't need to avoid pain either because you'll be willing to endure suffering for the sake of your greater purpose.

The second part of your response to the question, "how do you find meaning in your life?" is very insightful.
As you say, "Sure, there's no duty you're going to find by going for a hike but the problem with gamers is that the only thing that you use to learn is your analytical mind. There are parts of your self, and parts of your mind, and parts of your brain that are more intuitive, that are more emotional, and you have to give them space".
Yourself and Devin Nash (where I found you from) are my favorite people on youtube right now. Thank you for making these videos and sharing your thoughts.

I'm a substance addict, and I realise my meaning and my duties and I reflect a lot, and I recognise my talents and potential, but I've been addicted to just thinking and analysing and understanding things, and I consider myself something of a problem solver, a philosopher and an amateur therapist, amongst other things good and bad, all the while using marijuana and the unhealthy habits of binging, slothing, chocolate, and procuring more marijuana, and I'm depressed and my confidence has been shattered after I went from feeling the high of both commanding attention or creating a safe haven for everyone who looked like they could use one, and just helping anyone I could out by just being a genuine laddy with my passion for things in college, with my band, and in my interaction with any human being I talked to, known or otherwise; to feeling like I have no one have to have conversations where I can share my soul out (my childhood trauma is putting my needs behind to feel any value for myself, so I don't share my emotional needs, my insecureties, or the shades I've noticed from my shadow, with others), and no one to check up on me, even though I might (?)
Yeah, I just ranted in a UA-cam comment section, sue me (pls don't) but I wanted to say that this resonates to me, even as a different class of addict, even though I'm a casual gamer myself, and I feel like I'm about to go into the think tank and write down my dharma after I press send (or don't) [Schrodinger's button] {for me, not for you guys. Don't compare the fraud Jordan Peterson, who constantly speaks outside of his realm of expertise, to Dr K.
Peterson constantly uses his background as an excuse to make people believe he has any better authority to speak on politics.. Not to mention his success was literally built upon him repeatedly MISREPRESENTING bill C-16, despite being shown how and why he was wrong.
So he's either very stupid (unlikely) or, has an agenda. The latter is very obvious considering he constantly leads you down the logical line of far right ideas, without outright stating their horrible horrible conclusions. He just leads you alllll the way there with descriptive statements, then lets you come up with the prescriptive statements on your own, so that he can continue to feign ignorance and remain publicly accepted.

If you see where the pursuit of meaning of life lead us you’d be surprised that it allowed us discover many great things, such as medicine and space travel - all fruits of the western civilization.
Guys from the other side of the globe, while being subjectively happier and filled with purpose they oftentimes have issues with creative thinking and uncovering something really new. Can’t really do that when you are “due” to do a lot of other things.

Carl Jung's concept of synchronicity explains why a greater meaning can only be found in irrational places. You can find broader patterns of meaning when you have a broader set of experiences to draw from, which is why our sense of purpose depends on our experiences. Reality is better defined as that which it is not as opposed to that which it is. Reality is not words and it is not concepts, but is beyond all rational comprehension. It is not any one thing you point to, it is beyond everything.

I think a big thing that helps for gamers is seeing life itself as a video game. There are quests that you can go on, skills to train, adventures to be had and companions to be made! And it has the best graphics and the best sensations you can find in a game! And you can have sex! I was sold myself, it's how I beat my 6 year League of Legends addiction. Learned to find my place in the real world as opposed to finding an artificial place and virtual meaning/achievements in a game.

Ok so I think there's a practical and a philosophical/religious aspect to Dharma. From a philosophical standpoint I want to ask the question if you believe that Dharma has some objective meaning, that it exists beyond our personal feeling of duty / meaning. If so, why? I think a lot of people in western culture, especially young people (and gamers), are pretty nihilistic, they don't really see any objective meaning in things beyond subjectivity. In the Rekful interview you said that this view is "actually not true", why do you think that?
From a practical standpoint, I think the concept really helps. The feeling of meaning seems to be fundamental to live a fulfilling life so in order to do so you must find something which feels meaningful to you and perhaps that is even a duty, something you neccessarely must do.
I think the good thing is that even if meaning is completely subjective, most of us can find meaning in our world if we try. I also really like the idea that pain is fundamental in life and whe shouldn't try to avoid it at all costs.

"To draw an analogy: a man's suffering is similar to the behavior of gas. If a certain quantity of gas is pumped into an empty chamber, it will fill the chamber completely and evenly, no matter how big the chamber. Thus suffering completely fills the human soul and conscious mind, no matter whether the suffering is great or little. Therefor the "size" of human suffering is absolutely relative.
Don't aim at success--the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it."

Other message is Love as supreme focus that can overcome all evil and is not applicable in this discussion.
I was always under impression that Budha idea was to get away from anything and disconect until we are in situation of not being tied to world matters and therefore not being able to suffer since we do not care nad we are above it all in nirvana.

I've been to museums, ive traveled to other parts of the world. Im currently going to school, for my one passion, music. But I still cant find what my "duty" is. There is no reason for my existence, really. I just do stuff until I die, pretty much.

If there is anything that has meaning beyond a finite life it'd be to do science and research in making life infinite. A shot in the dark to be sure but maybe we could extend it by 40 years and within 40 years find a way to extend it by another 40 etc etc.

There are a considerable number of parents (40%) who happily sacrifice their children to make themselves feel better. They do not 'do the best they could' they do what feels good to them at the childs expense.

Ask yourself what made you so passionate about racing and driving. What does it do for you to make you fulfilled and happy? Do you get a sense of freedom from it, etc? How can you help other people also experience that same joy/fulfillment you get from it who share a similiar interest in your hobby? People want to be happy and fulfilled, if they see that you are happy yourself by engaging in your own passion of driving/racing they will be drawn to you for it and you can help them experience that same joy and be the light for them.

I love the series and it has been tremendously helpful for me, however I can't help but notice that this episode may be less useful for certain types of people.
For example, my 18 year old brother has no interests other than gaming and parkour, which he absolutely excels at. So telling him to find his duty, to find his purpose in parkour seems kind of useless. What is the purpose in parkour other than becoming better? And there certainly isn't any duty in it. You are not responsible for anything other than your own progress.
Sure, some influential athletes might be inspired to raise awareness about parkour or some athletes feel their duty is to inspire younger generations to self-improve, but I fear all of those things come with years of life experience. You can't just sit in your room and write an essay which will enlighten you and make you find your Dharma. You can't just go for a weekend hike and come back with a sense of duty that you will be the next inspiring parkour celebrity.
I absolutely agree that Dharma is absolutely essential to living a fulfilled life, but I believe it is not as simple as you describe it here.

Not to put words in Dr. K's mouth, but how I understand what he is saying is that you shouldn't necessarily pigeonhole yourself to experiences you are familiar with. Try something new, or if not create space for your emotions while doing something you are familiar with. You don't have to think super hard about how xyz activity is going to apply to your eventual purpose, or if it even will. The idea, as i understand it, is that during said experience, examine yourself and see if it elicits a strong emotional reaction. It doesn't have to be related to the activity, it can be incidental, or even wholly unrelated. Hear your own thoughts if you aren't interested in the activity, or find your mind wandering. The process is incredibly time-intensive.

There's no higher power. The reason people can do things for dharma is that they identify with their purpose; it's the same with the kid; the parent actually sees the kid as an extension of theirself or something, or identifies with the kid, so of course they'll make sacrifices for it; it IS them (as far as they can tell; if they believe it then it's kind of true, kind of thing). It's not even internal/external; you ARE it; you've just realised that (or something).
    Apparently.
