Hahaha that one store bedroom. My bedroom looks exacly like that. The ikea bed with storage, pax wardobe with gold knobs, and white vanity. I would've loved a different look, but we were on a tight budget and we decided to focus on de living room, dining and kitchen (open concept). I'm going to try to add some different textures to the bedroom. Wood, organic, gold and white it is. We've already painted one wall in olive green. Okay now I'm rambling. I love your videos! Greetings from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
i found replacing knobs can instantly elevate a wardrobe, you can find unique looking ones for pretty cheap. and colorful curtains instantly change the mood and look of a room!
1. Get some wall decor or paint your walls a fun color. Make it say something about you. And surround your wall mounted tv with something else to look at. 2. Avoid too much dead space on your walls when decorating. Take into account the height of the wall as well. 3. Add variety by adding different colors. Or add new shapes, textures or patterns if your not a fan of (more) colors. 4. Mix up your furniture style, shape, color and textures. Don't get too matchy matchy. It can be scary to try, but you can use moodboards and tools. Repetitive elements throughout your house are fine, but can be executed in a small way. 5. Add rugs (or rugables) to break up spaces and anchor your furniture. They add personality as well. 6. Shop at different stores to make sure you mix up your style. That way your house won't look like the catalogue or someone else's space. 7. Make sure you don't have too much of the same thing in one room.
My townhouse has a small open living room, kitchen and entry way. It was so beige. I love color so I used it to break up space. Great advice on breaking up the boring feeling.
Been loving your videos. Currently moving out of my apartment to somewhere new and looking forward to switching up the style. Your tips bring light to soo many aspects I never even thought of. I don't want a boring home 😪. Keep teaching us the spice. 🙌
I love the way you Christmas trees look in the background💗 Like you, my living room and dining room are pretty monotone and I love it, but, that's where wood tones and hardware and texture can break it up and create interest.
Kiva what is your opinion on removing rugs in the summer and have them in place for colder days? I like rugs and they do tie the space but I redid my floors and love them, I also like the open, fresh & airy feel in the summer vs cozy feel in winter. Thanks for the great tips and for being such a nice soul!
Same here. I love my woodenfloor, I would like to have an oldfashioned Swedish "röllakan rug" but I would like a more modern pattern and not so traditional pattern at it. Those rugs are amazing, tightly wowen in fairly coarse wool yarn that is fairly resistant to dirt. And in wintertime you just bring them out in the snow to wipe it with a brush you dipped in snow.
Lately I’ve been finding things from thrift stores or flea markets are a great way to find something to add at least some personality to a space. It doesn’t have to be knick knacks but everyday needs that you just can’t find in the home stores anymore like unique lighting, or that sturdy rug that has stood the test of time. For me personally, what gets me is that people are too afraid to give their home a personal touch and they stick to one of the modern styles without branching out and testing other styles. Especially when their home has beautiful or vintage architecture they don’t take advantage of.
Yes, only shopping at one store. So many people with decorating channels on YT have houses that look like Hobby Lobby or Kirklands storefronts. Shop at different places, and go to thrift and antiques stores because you'll find things that are actually unique.

I agree organic elements add a great look/feel. But plants for me would = 5 dead carcasses. Over the years I've killed MANY, even with best intentions. I am so guilty of shopping at only one store. Almost all of our house is from ikea. I tried to get lamps and curtains at target but they only keep like one of each curtain panel in stock and there was nothing I really liked. Went to Ikea and there were so many options! I was in a furniture store recently, and a man was walking around with the sales associate, he pointed to a display and said he wanted that exact room! He also added two matching ottomans. So, the sofa, 2 armchairs, and the ottomans were all going to be the same. Now that is boring!
I think this is why people embrace Minimalism. Homes are already expensive and people barely can afford paying their mortgage every month let alone buying decent art.
There are plenty of artists out there that are reasonably priced- I’m a pet portrait artist 👩🎨 and I keep my prices down so that more people can afford them. Etsy is a great place to look
Boring is only an insult if you feel like you haven't found your design style. My home is boring, but I am not insulted because I am working toward finding what is me. Rome wasn't built in a day. :)
Great tips Kiva! (In this house football Saturday / Sunday AND Monday night 🙄 and what ever other day there is a game on lol ) appreciate all your advise (just re-did the half bath 😬 using wallpaper and board and batten … ☺️)
I have the opposite problem- What are some tips for when decor including wall decor & shelves is generally enough vs. too much? My style is mostly traditional but somewhat eclectic & maximalist, so it seems easier to go overboard compared to modern styles. Thanks! :)
Hm, maybe clean up that one shelf or wall or table completely and bring back your decor and things with an intention- group all things ceramic, of one colour, from one vacation etc and do it one thing after another- stepping back like an artist and check your composition. Variations in heights, textures, pattern, colors.. and the rule of three or more uneven numbers can be applied. Put the rest of the stuff in a pretty box and store it (if the box is pretty enough even on the same shelf. And if you want to mix up things a few weeks later, just do it. Rotate the decor, mix in seasonal decorations, bring your things to another room. Reduce visual spaces and then put back things to get a feeling when you have enough or when another candle on that shelf is too much. Most people have an inherent sense of composition, so don't be afraid to style stuff like you would paint a still life or set a holiday table, coordinate an outfit or make a shop display.
what might help is photographing or taking a video of each room. What stands out first? How can you use negative space to emphasize the objects or areas you enjoy the most? How can you create a visual heirarchy starting with the objects placed at eye level? This is in addition to Mirabelle's comment
Very smart video. Keep elegance and real living in mind. You can also add extra color with gorgeous flowers and throw pillows on a white or beige background .
I love that you refer to budget, upkeep; REAL life! Kiva, I really miss your DIYs! If you don't have time or desire to DIY yourself, would you consider putting together the occasional inspiration video with pictorial examples of DIY projects by others, then voiceover your opinion and suggestions? We need it.

Kiva, I’m seeing posts on here that some of your subscribers are interested in faux plants that look real. As in REALLY real, not dollar store type, lol. I am also one of those peeps, as my windows are few, and the orientation of my home is not conducive to a big bright space. Live trees will die here!😂 Would you consider doing a video on some good fake plants and taller fake trees/plants for those of us that have insufficient light to grow large plants in our rooms? It will have a black carved bed with black upholstered headboard. It has one large, fabulous RH black bookcase with casement hardware. One reading chair in a very deep green velvet. How do you choose? Thank you!
Rugs really do matter! My old rug got by my cats and I had to throw it away, then for a few years I couldn’t find one that suits me, to the room and the cats of course… At last I had to compromise and got a smaller rug and even that changed the whole ambience of the room! I am still looking for a right sized one but in the meantime any rug one can find will work better than no rug believe me.

Your affordable luxury videos are the most informative and entertaining to watch 😁 my favourite part this time is “I’m not Kim Kardashian” x3 🙃🙃🙃
I feel attacked. 😂 Been in home for 1.5 years and I have bare walls. Was crippled in fear of getting the ‘wrong’ art. 🤦🏾♀️. I’m working on it.
I’m thinking of creating my own art, I agree, it’s expensive enough to furnish the home, etc.
Couldn't agree with you more.👍
There are plenty of artists out there that are reasonably priced- I’m a pet portrait artist 👩🎨 and I keep my prices down so that more people can afford them. Etsy is a great place to look
You can find decent art at thrift stores
Ur house is beautiful kiva I love that ur so honest for all the tips it’s so appreciated
Aw thank you so so much! You’re too sweet! 💕
And don't forget TNF too! 🏈
Grouping into 3s and focusing on getting that negative space might help.
We need it.
Stongly regret buying so much at Homegoods over the years!!! U have superb taste- if someone says ur house is boring they don't know what they r talking about!!!
You missed adding a plant, which add so much to a room.
Love your tips ! Now do you feel to have something on all the walls in a living room is too much?
Kiva, I’m seeing posts on here that some of your subscribers are interested in faux plants that look real. As in REALLY real, not dollar store type, lol. I am also one of those peeps, as my windows are few, and the orientation of my home is not conducive to a big bright space. Live trees will die here!😂 Would you consider doing a video on some good fake plants and taller fake trees/plants for those of us that have insufficient light to grow large plants in our rooms?
Love your vids, as always 👍❤️
Yes I can definitely do that!!
I just love ya ❤️🙌🏻✌🏻
Omg thanks so much Kasie! 💕
You and Babe have a fabulous home!
Thank you Kathleen!! 💕
You are INCREDIBLE! Thx.
Thanks so much!!
Can you do a video about Persian rugs? How do you choose with so many out there? I have been searching for months for bedroom Persian rug. It will have a black carved bed with black upholstered headboard. It has one large, fabulous RH black bookcase with casement hardware. One reading chair in a very deep green velvet. How do you choose? Thank you!
Those green pillows pop! And it's even better because I'm sure you saved money by using pillow covers.
I'm obsessed with this channel as I update my house!! I love the practical advice.
Hello from Ukraine! Excellent channel, and what is important for me: though you speak pretty quickly I get each word and your sense of humour is international.
Your living room looks so beautiful! I love your videos...you give such great advice and you are so personable!
You’re too sweet! Thanks so much Linda! 💕
Kiva, you are classy, but in a common sense way. You put budget and make it sensible and attainable. Love your channel. I must watch you more.
For Seniors rugs are a trip hazard!
I love rugs but I’m also a senior with mobility issues.
I don’t need anything on the floor to make me fall.
When i'm not actively watching a You Tube video, my TV has a quiet snowfall video, a fireplace or, in summer, an underwater video.
That’s so lovely!!
how do you clean your area rugs cant get them wet because it will warp floor any cleaner including foam will make it wet my sister is a freak about this she wont let me even spot clean what do you do
I have never felt more seen than by the statement "is that the football day?"
😂😂😂😂
Upgraded my home over the last year. Thanks to you 😜
Omg yay Tyra!! 💕
