Another method that I’ve used to find an actual leak in the liner is to stop any pumps then allow the water to stabilize as you’ve mentioned then I get into the pond carefully and closely inspect right along the line where the water has dropped to as the water won’t drop below this puncture. You’ll eventually find the puncture if you look closely enough and can apply a patch this way. Great advice as usual sir! Thanks for all of your help.

I have a pond that you can obviously see 3 inches of liner showing and that’s when the filter goes crazy because theirs not enough water.. I’m afraid there may be a leak right above the water line

"Peel back the liner, you'll easily find the leak"
I dont think this is that simple. Do you mean... I dig up my entire pond and look for a wet spot? If the water has already leaked out passed the spot then how do I find it? I have a brand new pond. Filled it up for the first time a week ago, and its leaking. Like 100 gal a day. I thought maybe its the skimmer leaking because the water is dropping below the door of the skimmer (above the first set of screws) so I added a bunch of silicone and expanding foam inside the skimmer. But that didnt do a thing...
so now I am just at a huge loss...

Should be easy to find a wet spot on a new build. Much harder on an old existing pond.

Do you use sealant when patching the liner? Found my leak today

I’d just buy the Firestone repair kit. Has everything you need. Primer, sealant and the patch.

@@Ozponds Thanks a lot, couldnt get it here easily so got 'gorilla tape', if that fails I might have to get repair kit. it's an hdpe liner so its basically like a type of plastic, quite cheap, not a good liner but i took a chance

Hi Kev, my pond is 5 metres diameter, 1 metre deep, has a 10 metre stream feeding into it. I have been filling it up as the sun goes down, and when I get up in the morning it has lost around half an inch overnight. Question: I understand it is normal that I will lose a lot of water during the day, but should I also expect to lose half an inch overnight when the sun is down? Overnight temps have recently been around 13 degrees and daytime mid 20s (South Australia). I can't see that any water is spilling over the edges anywhere, but there is this 1 section in the stream where I had to overlap liner and I am just concerned something is going wrong there (I overlapped the liner by at least 1 metre on a very slight slope - no adhesive used). Thanks mate

Yeap that’s too much overnight. If you are just overlapping the liner allow at least a 30cm fall (minimum). Firestone makes a silicon adhesive that is easy to apply and should fix your problem (provided that is where the leak is).

@@Ozponds Thanks Kev. That's what I feared. Out of interest, should I not be losing any water overnight? Or is it acceptable to have a bit?

A bit is ok. There’s still wind & water movement.

It’s so annoying my dog jumps in the pond and I was on vacation and I returned and the pond has dropped so much there’s so many holes and I don’t want to have to remove all the rock clay and plants
