The Cuben is louder but nothing out of control. It had a nice relaxing night in the rain sound. Nothing to worry about. Thanks for comparing those for us.
I use both a rectangular and hex Cuben fiber tarps. They are noisier than other materials. What you hear is water drop shattering upon contact. Not perpetrating or absorbing or resting on. When I think about that it puts me right to sleep.
The hammock, being under the Silpoly tarp will absorb some of the sound. To make this a truly equal comparison, remove the hammock from the one or place an equal hammock under the Dyneema tarp. Just my two bits.
Haven't seen much on the comparison of rain noise, just durability/water absorption/cost, so thanks for doing this. You could also download a simple decibel meter app on your phone and get a more scientific comparison.
Dan Kett I’ve been thinking about doing another video when it’s really coming down, and making it more “scientific”! Thanks for the content. Hopefully you’re getting out there... rain or shine!
A real world test that puts the rumours to bed. Clearly a difference in sound 'quality' and a slight difference in volume but really nothing serious or problematic. Thanks.
really good idea for a comparison vid. it was not nearly as noticeable as I expected. cuben definitely seemed noisier, but not by as wide a margin as expected. nice work
Agreed, though i did notice the difference more during the "simulated downpour test" it still wasn't enough for me to consider it a deal-breaker. So far only the cost remains as the sticking point and maybe durability, but i assume over time that the durability will get better. All tarps have the "fallen limb puncture" weakness, but it's a lot easier to accept with a less expensive product.
Better & Better the primary reason most go with a Cuben Fiber Tarp is the weight savings. Less durable but lighter than other materials. So if you’re not as concerned with weight savings, and you don’t want to burn a hole in your pocket, then there are many other viable options. Good luck out there!
Only a few seconds of video with Rain Sounds and no talking which makes it hard to compare. But... jumping back and forth between 2:01 and 3:01 I managed to get a good comparison. What I found was suprizingly the Dyneema Tarp was slightly quieter than the Sil-Poly. Not what I expected. Thanks for the Video it was a great idea to test this. Cheers, Snug.
Snug and Radar I was getting creeped out by just sitting there and not saying anything, but I get your point! Lol. From being underneath both of the tarps, I’d say the volume was very similar but the pitch when the rain hit was different (as I mentioned in the vid). Next heavy rainstorm I’ll set the tarps back up and just leave the camera. No commentary, just rain!! Haha... thanks for the comment!
Good theme for a video. I like hearing the rain, just as well as it rains in NW England most days. You could have downloaded a decibel app, it might not be accurate but could be used for comparison.
Bit off topic, but does sil-nylon condensate more than sil-poly, in your opinion. My sil-nylon condensates a lot even in the summer. (used with a hammock)....Great vid by the way, very relaxing sounds....Thanx in advance....bex
Without proper venting, you’ll get condensation build up on both tarps. I haven’t noticed if one is worse than the other. Although, because the DCF tarp doesn’t absorb water it does dry out quicker.
got a (good) giggle out of this video. I always scratched my head over this issue. Here is a sound cording that I did here in the Redwoods of Northern California a few years back of the rain falling on one of my cuben fiber shelters. soundcloud.com/johnabela/rain-cuben-fiber
John Abela lol. Yeah it’s one of those things that you hear people saying that it’s an issue, but I never even noticed it. I listened to your recording and you can hear that “ping”! Nice and Relaxing!! Thanks for commenting! Merry Christmas!
The silpoly was at a steeper angle which would cause quieter collisions with the rain. That and the distance to the microphone should be your controls.
Cuben really gets annoying in tighter pulled setups (drum membrane effect) with a less steep angle towards the sky, like a MLD trail star in storm mode. A hose is no simulation of storm gusts hammering fine rain loads, you will need eventually ear plugs to get rest. So you wander into nature and you will sleep with ear plugs for a premium price.....
soundscollector yup, I can see the irony in spending a ton of money to be uncomfortable. But on the flip side, carrying less weight increases comfort on the trail. To each their own. I try not to hike in the rain to alleviate this possible hindrance! Lol

Atlas918 yeah I didn’t find it to be annoying. It was very relaxing. I’m happy as long as I’m out!! Lol thanks for the comment!
Congratulations on staying awake. Rain on a tarp puts me to sleep pretty quick.
Richard Matthews I thought I was gonna go down for a sec then I decided to go get the hose! Lol. Thanks for watching!
Love that, “if you hear rain hitting, your outside and it’s all good”! Great deduction!
gbolt on a Trail it just came to me!! Lol.

Brian Bassett I agree!! Very relaxing!! Even if it’s a little “nosier”!! Thanks for the comment!

I like the sound of the Cuban fiber. It reminded me of crisp bacon frying. God bless. John
snaponjohn100 mmmmm, bacon!! That’s sounds good!
really good idea for a comparison vid. it was not nearly as noticeable as I expected. cuben definitely seemed noisier, but not by as wide a margin as expected. nice work
TikkerLoS thanks! Yeah, even though there was a difference in tone, the CF wasn’t much “louder” to a fault. Appreciate the comment!

Nice comparison buddy. Enjoyed the video.
Jason Helmandollar haha. Thanks! Have to wait for a monsoon and do it again!
Triple Nickel Outdoors lol yea. I always enjoy people actually getting out there and testing gear like this. Thank you for that.
Jason Helmandollar thanks for watching my shenanigans! More to come!! 👍

haha understand. Thanks for the post. very good topic. Cheers, Snug and Radar
Snug and Radar cheers!
Rain + Tarp= Sleep like Rock
Neither was objectionable as long as I'm staying dry. Never had a problem sleeping in the rain.

Just having a little fun on a cloudy day!! Lol if I do another one I’ll get real scientific with it!! Thanks for the comment!
very nice video.thank you.
Thanks! 👍

I think they both will allow the same amount of moisture to accumulate. Condensation is always a problem! No way around it! Lol.
Rain on any tarp is just therapeutic I’d say same noise level different noise
I agree! 👍
How about the condensation? silpoly vs cuben

Mmmmmm. Bacon!

Cuben fiber sounds like you're frying something.
Hopefully it’s Bacon!
what make and size if the silpoly tarp
Tuck Williams UGQ Winterdream 12 footer. Here’s a review I did of it:
ua-cam.com/video/uYkIgMKl_0M/v-deo.html
Be good!
just bought an 11 ft. dream hammock raven, i already have a 10 x 10 sil nylon tarp. Do you think i should get the 12 foot tarp with doors?
Tuck Williams yes. Both of my tarps have doors. The added protection they provide for such a slight weight increase is definitely worth it in my book!

Triple Nickel Outdoors - true, happy hiking
soundscollector you too... hopefully in clear skies!!
I agree! 💯
I love us campers, we are such geek lol
Haha. I agree! 😂
😳
🤯
I use earplugs anyways.
