    The way you have it set up seems like you should be able to study in there pretty easy. I love it..... I just started building me a little library myself, been saved about 4 years so I'm still trying to figure out what kind of material to study to keep growing and this library tour gave me great insight...... Thanks and God bless you Pastor

    It is interesting when you show the book " a way to pray by mathew henry" then I remember the simplicity of Lords prayer by our Lord. I think we humans like to make stuff complicated. But nice library.

    • @DaneKristjan
      @DaneKristjan  10 місяців тому +3

      That's the beauty of Henry's book, it's just prayers from the Bible or compiled in Bible words. Nothing could be simpler. I often tell people that are looking for help in their prayer life to pray the Lord's Prayer twice a day, and pray through the whole book of psalms once a month (5 psalms a day). Then one could pray through many of the other great prayers throughout Scripture as well (Daniel, David, Solomon, Nehemiah etc).

    Fascinating. It seems to be mainly those in some sort of Reformed tradition who have such large libraries. Many pastors don't have a lot of interest in theology, and many could never afford to purchase so many books. It's very unusual also to be able to read so many languages!
    An impressive collection of Puritan writers, too. Surprised to hear N T Wright described as 'liberal' and as an 'enemy' when his writing would likely be characterized as 'conservative' by many in the theological world.

    You are a true blue pastor and theologian, Dr. Johannsson!! You have quite a library and I am so impressed!!! You'd probably make Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI blush with delight because HE has an impressive personal theology library, as well. In fact, your video presentation almost makes me want to go and acquire a whole lot of books online about theology!! By the way, I admire your demeanor as a man of the cloth. You seem like the man of God who would let people decide for themselves whether or not to follow Jesus Christ and who doesn't pressure people or guilt-trip them into accepting Him as their Savior like some people I've seen on TV or have encountered in my personal life. :) :)

    I am not a believer, but am impressed with the massive linguistic section of your books. Do all pastors study the ancient languages of the bible to such an extent, or is that just a personal interest of yours? My own library has an equally large linguistic input, but they are all books and dictionaries of modern spoken languages.

    hello brother! wondering if you could give me a ballpark of how many books you read per year (depending on size, i know) and how do you choose what to read? thanks!

    • @DaneKristjan
      @DaneKristjan  3 роки тому +5

      Hey Tyler, thanks for the comment. It all depends really. I read many hours each day. I start lots of books and then put them down. I reference tons and tons of books all week long, sometimes reading only a paragraph, other times reading 20-50 pages. I get halfway through or more some books and set them aside "for another time" (which never seems to come). I finish some books in a day, others in 8 months. Commentaries I consult while writing sermons for my Heidelberg series and whatever Scripture series I am in will get read cover to cover, but sometimes that takes a year or more. That also does not count random treatises contained in sets of "collected works". Does reading one whole treatise inside of a book count as reading a book? Or must one finish the whole volume of collected treatises for it to count as "reading the book cover to cover". These are all questions I have had to ask myself and answer as well lol. For me, I have learned that finishing a book is not as important as absorbing the content of what I do read down into my heart, mind and soul, assimilating it, digesting it, understanding it, engaging with it. So if I pick up a book that interests me and only read 20 of the 400 pages, but I really benefited from it, then I have learned to consider that a win. All that said, to give you an actual answer to your question, physical books (regardless of their content), I read about 10-20 books cover to cover each year, sometimes more. Those are usually large volumes. But what is more accurate is how many PAGES I read from all sorts of books including those I read cover to cover. I read anywhere from 100-300 pages a week of extra biblical material, sometimes more or sometimes less.

I also buy from private sellers on Amazon, abebooks.com, and other used book services. Reformation Heritage Books also has a used books section, as well as "bumped", or, damaged, books. As long as the book is clean, no markings and isnt falling apart, you can get the same book in just as good of condition for a fraction of the price. That is how I have purchased at least half of my library, for pennies on the dollar. Also, when I used to have a Facebook I was a part of some theology book groups and people would often sell and trade on there. I also know many pastors that sell their libraries or gift me books. Prayer also is key. Ask that God would provide the books you want/need. Hope that helps!

    As a Seminarian, I was completely caught off guard by the "know thy enemy slight". It's sad to hear a pastor describe another Christian as an enemy. We all worship the same Lord, we just have different approaches to him, the same for other faiths. If you are trying to know thy enemy, I would implore you to read closer some of those "enemies". John Shelby Spong, Wendy Farley, and Father Richard Rohr would be a great place to start.

      I wouldn't say those people are/were enemies, but some of their material that I've read appears to be a "different gospel" as far as I'm concerned.

      What?! Episcopalian? Queer studies? The great "social" gospel? WOKE? The Black ladies peace conference at Detroit, October, 2024? Speaking in vogue? The gift of Marxism? Easy street, the life of sedge. All hail, the idealist naked fest and burning man festival, Israel, Judea, 6 October 2023.

      I agree on the enemy part but come on there is only one way to approach God and it’s through Jesus.

    How many Bibles does one need? All this well and fine, Our homes , cars, land we own, Our gun collection, our computers and I pads , phones, mean absolutely nothing when the doctor tells you, you have months to live..🙏

      Amen. Most people "need" one Bible. As a pastor a have a few each for a different purpose. But at the end of the day, if all of them disappeared besides one, I would be just fine.

      You are right in your sentiment. The only thing I collect anymore are Bible commentaries and theology type books. I guess you could say I'm an aspiring minimalist.

    There are several good books on comparative mythology you should read that clearly shows exactly where the Bible stories were copied from..
    One book to rule them all!

    With all those commentaries that you study I am curious how much of the bible you actually preach? Seems like a lot of thoughts of men. How as a pastor do you ensure your flock is hearing God’s word and not mens interpretations? I am asking because I started down that road and the Holy Spirit led me away from it, do you have any hesitations? God Bless!

      Hey! These men commented on the Bible just like I do as a Pastor. Should I assume that the Holy Spirit leads me in my teaching (which I do) and that He didnt lead men before me? As Spurgeon said, "He who does not read does not deserve to be read. He who cares not for other men's thoughts has no thoughts of his own." The Bible reigns supreme over all these books, it is the 66 books of the Holy Spirit. So as long as you read with discernment, eat the meat and spit out the bones, and rely on the Holy Spirit to guide you as you read the works of men, you will be mighty in the Word of God. Thanks for the question, blessings.

      That's great, but I find absolutely nothing wrong with commentaries especially when learning about the cultural significance and customs of the times. There's absolutely nothing wrong with studying with those that have spent decades researching these types of things.
