    hey if you don't want them, I'll have them. They cost a bloody arm and a leg in Australia - the aluminium and stainless ones, I mean. I use them when cycling or walking. Hell, I even have one on my backpack just for going shopping. Haven't seen the free ones you're talking about anywhere

    • @TraceDominguez

      oh man, the plastic ones are free everywhere here in the States. Everyone and their mother puts their logo on the bottle and tries to give it away.

    • @databanks
      @databanks 6 років тому +2

      damn, I wouldn't object to some free ones - I actually use them. But you do have a point in the video about too many being given away being just as bad as disposable. Australian companies aren't as into the whole branded giveaway thing - they're more likely to charge you extra for their logo instead

    Funny I find this randomly when I was looking for a reusable water bottle to buy from Amazon just an hour ago.

    I hate all of the "cheap plastic crap" that's everywhere in our society. Which is why I only buy expensive plastic crap.
    Seriously though, I work in the QC lab at one of those bottlers you mentioned and can confirm, bottled water is reverse osmosis and/or filtered municipal water. Not that that's a bad thing. Tap water is great. Even though I can drink all the bottled water I want (they literally give it to us) I mostly use the drinking fountain.
    Water is water, but plastic is forever.

    • @TraceDominguez
      @TraceDominguez  6 років тому

      1. No pun!
      2. Amazing! Thanks for sharing! The reverse osmosis process can remove minerals and any other initiatives that might come from the water, right? So it’s not like there’s no service being performed (besides the convenience factor, of course).
      3. Your job sounds fascinating- tell me
      More!

    • @Master_Therion
      @Master_Therion 6 років тому +2

      1. Tell me honestly, to you like my puns? Last time you said you would cry if I left puns on your videos. Tears of joy or frustration?
      2. We use reverse osmosis, add selected minerals back in and sterilize with ozone. The ozone breaks down after 3 days. It's actually not safe to drink before the 3 days is up, the ozone will irritate your gut and kill your gut bacteria. We hold it in the warehouse for that time. It's a good product and has a long shelf life, but it's just water... is it obvious that I'm not in sales or PR? lol
      3. We use HPLC, density meters, spectrophotometers etc. to make sure everything is in specs. Physical testing of bottles and cans. Taste testing. We have a microbiologist who's retiring soon, and I might take over his job (I'm the most qualified of the lab techs.)
      It's a good job but can be stressful because it's fast-paced production. Not the slow paced research labs I'm used to.

      Hello,
      I am a water engineer, I do agree with the RO can filter out everything else besides water (and anything is smaller than water). The tap water is "SUPPOSEDLY" to be healthy and ready to drink since they were treated and added minerals and chemicals for balancing ph, health, clean, taste and odor. However, the problem of our household tap water is the pipes. I am on the field often and have seen different kind of contamination. I have seen a lot in the Los Angles area. On the other hand, drinking fountain can also be harmful (mainly by germs and bacteria) if it's outdoor and/or filter was not being change frequently. With all due respect, your theory is correct but the reality can be scary. Well... anyway, human are destroying themselves slowl..... nevermind, we are killing ourselves fast! plastic, radiations, CO2 releases, waste of food, sugar, new drugs, wars, racists, use of chemicals, waste of energy, etc. Please, save the world starting from "myself". Keep the world clean and peace. Also, don't forget to subscribing Trace Dominguez to learn more about everything, and discuss about science. We all love you, Trace.

      One thing I found interesting about tap water (yeah, there is something interesting about boring old tap water) is that if you ask some one in North America if the tap water is safe to drink, they'll say, "Yes, it is treated with chlorine". In Europe, at least parts of it, they will say, "Yes it is safe, there isn't any added chlorine". I have had tap water in Europe. Yeah, it's safe, but it tastes like it passed through a barn. Every one, and I mean every one, who drinks water over there drinks bottled water.

      I see where you’re going with this, but there are many other countries with socialized medicine programs with varying levels of success, none of which are drought with overuse “because it’s free.”
      We are already subsidizing each other’s healthcare through insurance and the highest cost care in the developed world, that cost gives buffers for profit, yes, but it also pays for those who shirk their bills.

The burden is always passed on...there is always a cost/price. I'm willing to help, but there will be a problem if I'm forced to help via single payer/etc. If someone such as Trump could get elected, then why trust govt with universal healthcare? Would someone like Trump purposefully withhold healthcare to ensure his position of power if he had that much control over your health? ua-cam.com/video/m4Y8vGuBkrk/v-deo.html

    Ok, here's what I've always wondered about single use plastic bottles; How is reusing them worse for you than using them the first time?
    If they leach chemicals into their contents if they are _reused_ doesn't that mean they leach chemicals into their contents on the first use too?

    • @TraceDominguez
      @TraceDominguez  6 років тому +1

      Not on the first use, no. It usually the failure to discourage growth of bacteria, or the detergents or water temperature for cleaning that (to my understanding) causes the problem. (Though I’m at a music festival right now, so I’m not exactly up on the research!)

    It’s a shame you didn’t name what are the good reuseable aluminum and glass bottle manufacturers. Anyway I’ve been using Nalgene plastic bottles for decades. I typically use one for an average of 3-4 years before they get lost (left behind) so I’m sure my usage has more than offset whatever carbon production cost. I only stick with reputable brands and I don’t use those free garbage handed out. I really wish companies would stop pretending to be green by giving away plastic bottles, reusable shopping bags, etc.

      they're great for long rides - multiple metal bottles on the side of the bike in various mounts. Especially in summer where you need every drop of water to avoid heat stroke in the aussie sun - they're strong enough to cope when some jerk in a car runs you out of the dedicated cycle lane (you know, riding where you're meant to, so the drivers aren't getting delayed? Well, you can reuse supposed “non reusable bottles”. The only reason you aren’t supposed to reuse them is because eventually they will break down, as they are weaker plastics (PETE and HDPE). In fact, Gatorade water bottles are made from HDPE. As long as the bottles aren’t exposed to heat for extended periods of time, they are most likely safe. You do make a good point as far as the energy required to make these reusable bottles. I will say this though, I would rather have one bottle end up in the landfill than hundreds.

Even telling them how much less it costs them if they change (these are not rich families) they will go for the bottles.

And a side note about plastic: it does degrade in a few hundred years, which is quite short on the scale of the earth. And if utilized in landfills correctly, it shouldn't be much of an issue for the environment.

    Could you make a video about whether the vegan/zero waste lifestyle are actually much better for the environment?

    I don't buy water bottles because of their effect on the environment. I want to drink.

    Now I feel bad about drinking out of my smart water bottle that I bought from the gas station months ago. =/
    Very interesting points though, good watch.

      Be careful! Look at the plastic type and don’t wash them and reuse them. I don’t want you to get sick.

    Why shouldn’t you use plastic bottles multiple times even if they are designed as disposable.!!

    *filtered and treated tap water. I dont like that it wastes water in the process, but reverse osmosis is basically what they do. Maybe with a little ozone and uv also. Thats the cheapest way to go. Buy 5 gal jugs that you refill over and over and over again. Make sure you add minerals back though because ro water isnt good to drink straight. Spring water is the way to go if you buy bottled. Evian! Just sayin

      So here's the thing I've heard this to many times i been drinking ro water for 10 years its the only way i drink water. The minerals from water or dissolved solids from the earth can't be absorbed in the body because they are inorganic in order for it to be available is for plants to uptake these minerals and convert them to organic put into simple terms.

      You should look online for the records of what is in your tap water. It’s tested a lot!

      It is not a regional thing, the water in my city is considered really good. However my appartment complex had to disinfect the boiler and all the pipes several times last year. Since that it tastes soapy and bitter, so i guess they didn't do it right or sth...
