Superb review. Thank you so much!!
Thank you!🙂
Love your reviews. Not only do you cover all the pro's and con's, but you share a ton of photo and video samples to back up your points. I think this lens makes the most sense for Fuji midrange zoom option. I have the 18-55 kit which is decent all around but have wanted to upgrade for a long time. The fuji options 16-80 and 16-55 all have limitations and in my opinion are not worth the price/performance upgrade. The Sigma 18-50 seems like a good start off lens for anyone getting into the fuji system, but the Tamron 17-70 looks like the best and most versatile all around midrange zoom. I recently picked up one of the new 40mp Fuji's and now is when you can really tell that Fuji needs to update their zoom's. That new sensor really shows off all of the resolution imperfections in fuji's old lenses. The 18-55 has served me well on the older bodies but its limitations with the new high mp sensors have me searching for an upgrade. I wish fuji had made the 16-80 as good optically as Nikon's new Z 24-120. That lens is fantastic and everytime I use it and go back to the fuji I am wishing for something comparable. I end up just grabbing a couple Fuji primes to equal the output of the Nikon. I think this tamron is the closest thing to that lens for Fuji. Thank you again for the review and samples. I am looking forward to your thoughts of this lens on the X-T5.
Thank you! I try to do my best with what time I have. At the moment I think this is the best mid range zoom for the Fujifilm system. I love the 24-120mm Z and I really hope that Fuji will release something to match that some day, a 16-80 MKii. I am working on the X-T5 review and soon after that I will make a review of the 35mm f1.4 and this lens on the X-T5
Thanks a lot andrei! Been waiting for this! Can’t go wrong with this lens. This lens and two primes and you‘re pretty much set for everything 👌🏼
My pleasure! My kit exactly, I have the Tamron 17-70mm, the Fuji 35mm f1.4 and the Viltrox 13mm f1.4.
Love you're reviews! very complete and handle in real life situations.
Thank you so much for the great work.
Glad you like them!
Great review Andrei 🙂
Thanks! 😀
Excellent review.
Awsm Product
Great pics 💙
Glad you like it
Used this for many trips abroad. Solid reliable performer. Love the close min focus. Something often overlooked. Its weight i can handle but my complain is the size. A little bulky and gets uncomfortable when pointed at others during street photography.
Totally agree!
Nice review! I'm considering this lens. Would be cool to see how it compares to the Fuji 18-120pz
Thank you! I'll add that to my list of videos for 2024.
Thank you for the review! I might get this combo soon
Hope you enjoy it!
Great review Andrei, very comprehensive. In the end I opted for the Sigma 18-50 based on size and weight....and a little bit on price too. But the Tamron looks to be a very good lens indeed so hope you have a great time with it.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the Sigma 18-50, it looks like a great lens.
Awesome review. You’ve definitely made me feel good about my purchase of the lens. 😂
Awesome! Thank you!
nicely done! looks like a pretty decent lens. I will be giving it a try soon and hoping to be pleasantly surprised as i have not been too impressed w/prior Tamron glass from yrs ago … but things can change for the better as many 3rd party glass has been really advancing the past 6-8 yrs!! Thanks for for reviewing this lens for Fuji
Hope you enjoy it!
Hi Andrei! I have very torn between getting the Tamron 17-70 and the Fuji 16-55... looking forward to your comparison video!
Hello, it is going to be a while because I rent gear from Germany and I live in Spain, but I will try and make it by the end of December. I tested the 16-55 in the past, I think it has a small advantage in image quality over the Tamron but I prefer the Tamron. Also I think the Tamron has better video autofocus.
from south korea, thanks for your reivew
Thanks for watching!
Brillant!!! Which simulation did you use got. the wonderful video? Thank you
Thank you! Provia and Eterna.
Been interested in swapping this out for my 18 - 55.
It's a good step up.
Hi, thanks for the video, but while everybody comments about Megalpixels and sharpness, my main question is: where is this crazy interesting architecture? The only one in this style I know is the train station in Liège in Belgium, maybe the same architect?
Hello, it is the same architect, Santiago Calatrava Valls. The building is part of the City of Arts and Sciences from Valencia, Spain.
Thanks!
My pleasure!
Gran review! estoy pensando pasar al sistema Fuji y este zoom es uno de los atractivos... junto con la nueva XS-20
Gracias! Debería ser un gran combo.
Nice lens, but not sure it’s worth the weight since the introduction of the Sigma 18-50. Obviously, the best comparable is the 16-80, which I found lacking in image quality and slow at f4.
The sigma 18-50 doesn’t have weather sealing and image stabilization tho. And of course way less reach and is also less wide.
@@markay_ for sure. All depends on your use case.
I think this lens and the Sigma 18-50mm are different options and it all depends on your needs. The Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 has great reach, image stabilization and it is weather sealed things that are a must for me. I started testing the lens on the X-T5 and so far it performs very well with the 40mp sensor.
@@markay_ It does have as much weather sealing as Tamron. Rubber gasket at mount.
Great review Andrei - as always lots of helpful detail. I agree with you about weight - much better to have a lightweight lens. I mainly use primes as I want the shallow depth of field you can’t really get on an f2.8 zoom on the Fuji sensor, but it’s not always convenient to keep changing lenses.
I do wish Fuji (or Tamron or Sigma) would make something like Canon’s 28-70 f2. It could be a lot smaller than the full-frame equivalents and at f1.8 or f2 would be really unique. In the meantime, this Tamron looks a great option and I’ll look forward to your review on the 40mp sensor 😊 By the way, what and where is that amazing piece of architecture in the video??
Thank you! Yes, a brighter then f2.8 zoom would be great for the Fujifilm system. It is the City of Arts and Sciences from Valencia, Spain.
@@AndreiDimaReviews Thank you - that looks a great place to visit 😊
@@AndreiDimaReviews Is it actually physically/technically possible to make f2 zoom for apsc?
@@kamilpotato3764 Actually, the smaller the format, the larger the fast aperture equivalents will be. If I'm not wrong, it is due to how difficult it gets to make wide aperture lenses when wider focal lengths need to be considered to counter the crop factor.
E.g.
- M43 Pana Leica 10-25mm f/1.7 (690g, $1,800). FF equivalent of 20-50mm f/3.5. But Sony released the 20-70mm f/4 (498g, $1,100) for about 60% the price of the Pana Leica lens with even longer reach.
- Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 (810g, $800) vs Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 (470g, $900)
- Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 (420g, $460) vs Sony 20mm f/1.8 (373g, $900)
Even if we take into account mirrorless lenses being lighter, a mirrorless version of the Sigma 18-35 will still roughly end up around 600g at best.
The size, weight, and cost is likely the reason stopping major manufacturers from creating such zooms. People would rather pay for FF lenses if the APS-C lenses are too expensive. But if the APS-C f/2 zooms are too cheap, it is impossible to make decent image quality. There's a compromise in every direction.
Great review Andrei, watched with pleasure. I have a questions, do you have an experience using this lens with older Fujifilm cameras, e.g. X-T3? I am considering buying this lens for my X-T3 and X-S10 body.
Thank you! I used it on my X-E4 to shoot some video for the channel and it worked well. For photo the autofocus is fast and precise. If you buy the lens don't forget to update it because it makes the autofocus better.
@@AndreiDimaReviews thanks a lot for advice. I probably buy it to replace my 18-55 2.8.-4.0. I know that AF in H2S is awesome, but I hope it will perform quite similar with my older cameras.
You rock Andrei 😅
Thank you!
Hello, this is a verry nice and helpful review, thank you. I would like to ask you how this lens is doing in zooming in/ out. Does it "hunt", or it is fluid? I would like to pair it with an xt-4, which also has ibis. Thank you, and salutari din Cluj :)
Hello, the lens is not parfocal so it will lose focus when zooming in and out.
Thank you for such a detailed review! Would you recommend this for upgrading from xf 18-55mm kit lens?
Yes, but you need to keep in mind that this lens is much larger than the 18-55mm. If you want a compact lens, keep the 18-55mm; it is a good lens.
@@AndreiDimaReviews Thanks! I went out for photoshoot the otherday with 18-55mm and I kept thinking "I wish I could zoom slightly further" haha.
Valencia footage ?
Yes
Hi
I am considering THIS lens
Can I get your general opinion about the lens?
Is this a lens suitable for full-length portraits and portraits from the waist up?
I use Fujifilm xt20 when the lens becomes unstable during focusing...
Hola Andrei. Excelente video! Gracias!
¡Hola Carlos! Sí, mi lente hace el mismo ruido.
@@AndreiDimaReviews Gracias!
Does it "resolve the sensor", whatever that means?
Yes, this one because it is 26mp.
Hey Andrei, thanks for the review! I already use this lens with my X-H2S - its awesome! Now I´m looking for a prime, for low light - would you say the Viltrox 23mm 1.4 would be a good fit? Or would you go with the Sigma lenses?
Hello, if your options are the Viltrox and Sigma go for the Viltrox, the autofocus is better. The Viltrox 23mm f1.4 is a good option for video.
@@AndreiDimaReviews thanks mate! Ordered the viltrox already today. I mainly shoot videos. Perfect ;)
@@motionstku hi, how is it going with viltrox 23mm?
@@x4da Now that the Sigma 23mm f/1.4 is out, it is better to wait for that. Sigma is sharper and has less chromatic aberration than Viltrox 23.
Hi Andrei, do you think that worth upgrade from my XF 18-120 ? I struggle with low situations. I have X-H2s for foto and for video production as well.
Yes, I think you should upgrade. After you get the Tamron, update it to the latest firmware it improves autofocus.
Hello, Andrei!
Is f2.8 good enough for night/low light situation? and how is the bokeh for portraits?
Hello, f2.8 is good enough for low light but not great. The bokeh looks nice in my opinion.
Hi. Can the lens stabilization turn off ? To do astrophotography this is important
Hello, yes.
Thanks for the review! Would like to know the distance of minimus focus in cm at 17 and 70!
At 17mm it is 19cm and at 70mm it is 39cm.
Very curious to see how it does with the 40mp sensor
I am doing my best to release a video soon, busy with work.
@@AndreiDimaReviews I know, I didn't mean to push you... I know how it feels😅
One question that I don't believe was addressed in this video: Since this lens doesn't have an aperture ring (which is standard on Fujinon lenses), how would you program the exposure settings since the X-H2S technically only has two dials (not including the PSAM)? So, ideally there is one dedicated to ISO and one to shutter, but where would aperture then be accessed? Thanks!
When I made this video you could not add ISO on any of the dials on the X-H2s, that was added recently. So when this video was released I used the back dial for aperture. I haven't updated my X-H2s yet to the firmware that allows ISO on the dials because I am really busy with work, so I can't answer your question now. I will update this weekend and come back with an answer.
@@AndreiDimaReviews That sounds good, Andrei. Thank you. It would appear that one would have to resort to using the ISO button or up/down on the back of the camera for ISO, if that meant leaving an option for an aperture dial and shutter dial for a lens that has no aperture ring. This is my one rather huge gripe with the X-H series - why couldn't they add another dial on top to the right instead of the puzzling button configuration? Very limiting from what I can see. This is why I very much appreciate Canon's wheel on the back.
@@86london With the new firmware I was able to set the rear dial to ISO, and set the front dial to SS/Aperture, which I made switchable using the button on the grip inset. Definitely a much easier workflow.
Does your lens rattle when shaken, ? When not attached to the camera?
Yes, it is normal to do that.
does this lens have the exposure steps 'problem' when zooming in video like the native fuji zooms do?
Yes, that is a Fujifilm problem not a lens problem. Fujifilm still doesn't know how to control aperture smoothly in 2023.
Heyy wanted to know if this lens also has that sudden distortion on the edges while quickly zooming in/out for videos?
I have a test unit 16-80 and it does that weird distortion while quickly zooming in/out while shooting videos.
Yes.
Wonder if anyone can confirm this lens works with the 40MP XH2
Yes it works. Do you mean if it resolves all the 40mp?
@@AndreiDimaReviews right. I actually have both, but I am not good enough to tell
Does it support the old Fujifilm machine X-T1? Thanks!
No, it doesn't.
@@AndreiDimaReviews Thank you. 🙏🏻
@7:51 are these jpegs?
better than fuji 18-120 F4 ?
Yes!
Have you ever had an issue with this lens and body combo where when you zoom during video it just stops focusing? It seems to happen almost every time and I have to press the shutter to get it to refocus and then it seems to recover, until I zoom again. Insanely frustrating that they haven't fixed this yet.
Hello, I did not. Do you have the latest firmware installed for the lens? Did you shoot video in continuous autofocus? The focus changes on this lens when you zoom in because it is not par focal, but the focus shouldn't stop.
@@AndreiDimaReviews yes I have the latest firmware on both lens and body. I'll double-check lens version, but I'm almost positive it is latest.
Mntap sangat keren video
Thank you!
Is it good for 40 megapixel (xh2) too?
Yes
when I use it with my xh2s the vinetting is so bad at 17mm f2.8. Why is that.
I don't know. The lens has a bit off vignetting at 17mm and f2.8 but not bad. Maybe the lens has a problem, try to replace it at the store.
Check if you have the PERIPHERAL LIGHT CORRECTION on.
I've been a photographer for almost 25 years and whenever I see a lens completely made out of metal (especially the hood) I assume the manufacturer doesn't know what they're doing. If you drop an all-metal lens with a metal hood and it lands on the hood, literally all the glass will explode into hundreds of billions of pieces. That's an unrecoverable lens. If the same thing happens but at least the hood is plastic, it's 95% guaranteed the glass will be fine because plastic absorbs force. Viltrox right now for example really needs to take heed of this. They are making an awesome 75mm F1.2 but the body and hood are both metal and they will simply be destroyed a lot easier.
True, but we don't know what happens beneath that metal. The metal could be just a cover, and the interior could be made from plastic, so the shock won't be that bad.
@@AndreiDimaReviews Yes, in the case of the Viltrox it has (I believe) 9 weather sealing points which I assume are rubber, this should help a bit
