If nobody has mentioned already 2000 Watts, Threatened and Don’t walk away are probably the tones of his natural vocal from low to high in his mature years. Lucky to have seen him on the Dangerous tour and he was pretty deep vocally at that time. This was 1992 Cardiff arms park, Cardiff, Wales. Something il never forget. Michael never liked his own voice which to me is insane but he was clearly one of the best if not thee best. His vocal manipulation skills were awesome too just as his ability of illusion with movement. Just check out his Disney impressions and his beatboxing skills. Dude knew how to run the game. Was madly intelligent and really well connected musically and spiritually. Amazing what you can achieve if you follow the greats. Listen and learn children.
Hmmmm. Yes i accept the man was talented. I like some of his music. He had a unique voice and he could dance. But when people say things like he was a genius performer, when the man mimed his way through most of his adult career it really irritates me. Everything from the famous billie jean performance to his supposedly live Super Bowl half time show. He was miming. Does that take anything away from his truly remarkable voice? No it doesn’t. But it doesn’t make him a genius performer either. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve heard him sing live. Not great for a career that spanned almost fifty years. His genius is what he did in the recording studio. For that he deserves respect.

He actually was a very good singer when his vocal chords were in good condition and no damage from lupus and infections. There is a long video of him in studio recording 'Childhood' on youtube. It is a leaked footage from someone's stolen laptop.
I saw Michael (then age 14) in concert when The Jackson 5 included New Zealand in their world tour. They were all amazingly talented yet, still, he was head and shoulders above his brothers. Having sort of grown up with Michael Jackson, I put down the evolution of his speaking voice to a choice. I believe he was raised by a loud angry man and he didn't want to be anything like him. Just my opinion. Off The Wall was my first album, I think, and She's Out Of My Life is my favorite now, but Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, was then. RIP Michael Jackson. Also just a shout out to Quincy Jones who I don't think gets enough recognition.
Personally I think he gets too much. Quincy was great but he had a full team around him as well and these are the same people who worked on multiple artist projects and they never had anything like the same success with them. They were a great package altogether but I think Michael made more creative work later in his career once he parted ways with Quincy.

His speaking voice was low as ypung. Him as a youngun talking about his pets displays this. He always acted and sounded like an old man until around early 80's.
This was a really fascinating and surprising video. I wasn't really surprised to find out that his voice got stronger the higher he sang, but it was surprising to see how low his low notes really were. The fact that he sang them in a "thinner" voice really does trick your ear into thinking that he's not hitting notes that low. Also interesting to see that the same applied to his speaking voice. You're absolutely right. When anyone imitates his speaking voice, they don't speak in those quiet, thin lower notes, they speak like a mouse on helium. Judging MJ purely as an artist, he really was a genius. He had so much versatility in his voice...the range of notes he could hit, his "squeaks", even the raspiness he had in some songs...and he knew exactly what each song he wrote required of his voice. And it always sounded natural and effortless. Not like some singers with a multi-octave range, who can hit some stratospheric note, and have to make sure they hit it in every song (not naming names M Carey😂). It doesnt sound natural, it sounds forced and just "show-offy".
This was really surprising! I admit that I got out the pitch monitoring app to test what you were saying, Fil, because it really does sound like MJ was speaking at a higher pitch than you were. Of course you were correct, it was the same pitch. So interesting to see how a difference in tone can change your entire perception of what you are hearing. It might be interesting at some point to talk about how to tell the difference between mixed voice, head voice and falsetto.
That would be a great video. I'm not a singer, but thanks to Fil, I understand chest voice, head voice, and vibrato, but I don't know exactly what mixed voice or falsetto are. I recognize falsetto when I hear it, but I don't know exactly what is happening to achieve it. He should also explain the difference between a falsetto and a "fake" falsetto, where singers almost sound like they're screaming and "wobbling" their voice to imitate a falsetto...it's an assault on the ears, frankly.

it's odd that there doesn't seem to be any sort of common analysis on voice type vs vocal fold thickness, or generally an inclusion of lower/speaking voice notes in voice type.

From what I remember, the university vocal professor always recommended that her students speak in the vocal range they want to maintain or increase, and to conserve their voices, that they speak with less resonance. Just what I remember from my friends who studied with Margaret Theuneman.

Oh God! Because I was very good at music I was unfortunately put in the top maths class. I didnt have a clue what the maths teacher was going on about. I left without a maths qualification as a result of this music/maths theory experiment.

Superb vocal analysis of Michael Jackson's voice! You can tell that he had put loads of effort to master his instrument in a unique and genius way. I can't help assuming that his virtuosity is a result of the traumatic moment when he lost his cuteness and became a teenager. He once said that people where asking and looking for "lil Michael" even when he was standing right next to them. Having lost that trademark cuteness, he had to strive for something bigger to get seen again and become immortal. Thanks a bunch, Fil, for your hard work and all your knowledge!

This was fantastic, thank you. Suggestion: Can you make some day a video about Michael Jacksons aggressive raspy voice especially during the BAD era. Like in Dirty Diana or in the refrain of BAD. I think his raspy voice is unique maybe because he is naturally high pitched. There is no other singer sounding like him when he is going into aggressive screaming mode. I was always fascinated by that. There are rehearsals of the Dangerous Tour on UA-cam where he sings only at 20% lackluster voice and suddenly goes into his loud raspy voice. And maybe you could discuss if that is a healthy practice because as we know during and especially after Dangerous Tour his voice deteriorated and he was not able to sing a whole Tour without Playback. ( there are other reasons for that like dehydrating medications and other things too long to explain for now. I know some diehard fans think he had constant Laryngitis, but thats not true for all the years after Dangerous.) It was enough for Studio recording but even in the studio the voice was often gone after a 30 minutes session. By the way, he had quite a low voice when you had to do business with him. He went straight into a serious deeper voice which was a bit irritating when you only knew his high pitched voice. Love your videos man. 🤘
I can't tell which note it is but there is a song where Michael hits very low. It's "you can't win" from the musical The Wiz. The low note is at the very end of the song. I'm curious if it's the same low note he hits in this warm up or maybe lower

It’s seems like most people who knew him do the thin voice when imitating him, and most who barely knew him or didn’t know him at all do the high voice.
It's like he brings a tenderness to the lower note. So it could be that from speaking so softly when he talks, his low notes still sounded higher than they really were
I saw a video of him last week, made not long before his passing. (Don't remember where) He also looked like he hadn't slept for weeks. I felt so sorry for him. 🥺
From watching and reading about Michael, he never really had a childhood. His low voice, what I understood from articles, he was shy, as shy people have a normal voice only keeping it low normal. I understand when this is talked about him. For me to play sports with the other guys, in my town, I was about three to five years younger having to play I had to show I could do about the same as them. My brother being seven years older schooled me from like six on to learn catching, batting, shooting the basketball. I had others teach me on football my brother did not like that sport. Michael from an early age had to learn to be there with his brothers on dancing and singing, which took his hours that was not for school. I got to play with the guys at sixteen to twenty when I was twelve, from hours each day practicing and watching. Michael had the experience early age of a person much older and father driven to be perfect or else. What Michael could not learn being teach into him was to slow down and a mistake was not a bad thing. Thanks, Fil, for another video I did not know existed like many others.

I'm very curious about where his voice is pitch/note-wise when he's acting as the mayor in his Ghosts music video. It sounds a lot fuller than his typical speaking voice.

Yep. You can look on youtube for tutorials on imitating a female voice and basically they tell you not to alter the pitch too much, it's all in the tone.
your speaking voice is actually so similar to michaels except he has a gary indiana accent, if you wanna hear his real voice watch the video: "Michael Jackson - "This Is Something I Never Do" MSG 9.7.2001 Amateur Enhanced HD" it actually shows him talking in his regular tone and pitch.
This analysis was fascinating. I wasn't his biggest fan, because I gravitated to more classic rock for sure, but it reminded me of something I've always been curious about. Joe was quite harsh & abusive to his kids, & it makes me wonder if Michael became more soft-spoken and appeared to have the high voice as a result of his fear of Joe. Could that have influenced his voice, or would his voice have been exactly the same if he had a kind loving father? Watched Elton John's 'farewell' at Glastonbury last night and was very interested to see how he adjusted his singing to cope with age, carefully leaving out any adventurous 'head voice' . I guess it comes to all singers - along with vibrato which goes out of control. It would be interesting to compare how he and other singers have coped - Macca comes to mind. How do we decide when it's time to stop ? That would be an interesting episode !

Oh God! Because I was very good at music I was unfortunately put in the top maths class. I didnt have a clue what the maths teacher was going on about. I left without a maths qualification as a result of this music/maths theory experiment.
@@pheart2381 The only thing good for me that came out of the music/maths experiment is one math teacher agreed with the students' arguments that rock and folk were mathematical too and allowed us to bring records to listen to during math. It was a great year but I still nearly failed math.

Fascinating! Didn't realize his voice was in the "usual" range for a male, but simply "thinner." Obviously he learned to sing from his father. Wondering, now, about the brothers. They sound a bit like Michael did, but lower (or maybe less thin?). It'd be fun to compare it with his sister, Janet, too. Same range? Superb vocal analysis of Michael Jackson's voice! You can tell that he had put loads of effort to master his instrument in a unique and genius way. I can't help assuming that his virtuosity is a result of the traumatic moment when he lost his cuteness and became a teenager. He once said that people where asking and looking for "lil Michael" even when he was standing right next to them. Having lost that trademark cuteness, he had to strive for something bigger to get seen again and become immortal.

This was fantastic, thank you. Suggestion: Can you make some day a video about Michael Jacksons aggressive raspy voice especially during the BAD era. Like in Dirty Diana or in the refrain of BAD. I think his raspy voice is unique maybe because he is naturally high pitched. There is no other singer sounding like him when he is going into aggressive screaming mode. I was always fascinated by that. There are rehearsals of the Dangerous Tour on UA-cam where he sings only at 20% lackluster voice and suddenly goes into his loud raspy voice. And maybe you could discuss if that is a healthy practice because as we know during and especially after Dangerous Tour his voice deteriorated and he was not able to sing a whole Tour without Playback. ( there are other reasons for that like dehydrating medications and other things too long to explain for now. I know some diehard fans think he had constant Laryngitis, but thats not true for all the years after Dangerous.) It was enough for Studio recording but even in the studio the voice was often gone after a 30 minutes session. By the way, he had quite a low voice when you had to do business with him. He went straight into a serious deeper voice which was a bit irritating when you only knew his high pitched voice. Love your videos man. 🤘
I can't tell which note it is but there is a song where Michael hits very low. It's "you can't win" from the musical The Wiz. The low note is at the very end of the song. I'm curious if it's the same low note he hits in this warm up or maybe lower

I'd heard a vocal coach on this point saying Michael spoke in a high tone to protect his voice.
It’s seems like most people who knew him do the thin voice when imitating him, and most who barely knew him or didn’t know him at all do the high voice.
Do you think it was something to do with the bones in his face? His sinus configuration? Giving that tone to his voice.

It's like he brings a tenderness to the lower note. So it could be that from speaking so softly when he talks, his low notes still sounded higher than they really were

From watching and reading about Michael, he never really had a childhood. His low voice, what I understood from articles, he was shy, as shy people have a normal voice only keeping it low normal. I understand when this is talked about him. For me to play sports with the other guys, in my town, I was about three to five years younger having to play I had to show I could do about the same as them. My brother being seven years older schooled me from like six on to learn catching, batting, shooting the basketball. I had others teach me on football my brother did not like that sport. Michael from an early age had to learn to be there with his brothers on dancing and singing, which took his hours that was not for school. I got to play with the guys at sixteen to twenty when I was twelve, from hours each day practicing and watching. Michael had the experience early age of a person much older and father driven to be perfect or else. What Michael could not learn being teach into him was to slow down and a mistake was not a bad thing. Thanks, Fil, for another video I did not know existed like many others.

I'm very curious about where his voice is pitch/note-wise when he's acting as the mayor in his Ghosts music video. It sounds a lot fuller than his typical speaking voice.
It never occurred to me that MJ had a "thin" sounding voice when he spoke until you pointed that out and compared it to yours....I just assumed he had this higher speaking register. The things you learn on this page. Thank you Mr. Fil...... :) I wanna learn more

Yep. You can look on youtube for tutorials on imitating a female voice and basically they tell you not to alter the pitch too much, it's all in the tone.
your speaking voice is actually so similar to michaels except he has a gary indiana accent, if you wanna hear his real voice watch the video:

This analysis was fascinating. I wasn't his biggest fan, because I gravitated to more classic rock for sure, but it reminded me of something I've always been curious about.
Joe was quite harsh & abusive to his kids, & it makes me wonder if Michael became more soft-spoken and appeared to have the high voice as a result of his fear of Joe. Could that have influenced his voice, or would his voice have been exactly the same if he had a kind loving father?

Fil -- interesting analysis. Watched Elton John's 'farewell' at Glastonbury last night and was very interested to see how he adjusted his singing to cope with age, carefully leaving out any adventurous 'head voice' . I guess it comes to all singers - along with vibrato which goes out of control. It would be interesting to compare how he and other singers have coped - Macca comes to mind. How do we decide when it's time to stop ? That would be an interesting episode !

I don’t have the best ear but I tried my best to match michael’s speaking vs Fil’s on a keyboard app, and it seemed to me that Fil was actually going a step or two lower than Michael when mimicking his speaking.
