Also pretty sure this is the first time volley sights have been tried and filmed in modern times at an actual range they were intended for... I think several firearms historians will be very interested to see this. It looks like it proves the theory or doctrine of the time, which a lot of modern historians say was mostly an optimistic fantasy. If there would have been 100 of you shooting at 100 enemy soldiers, I'd say that would have been shockingly effective... I'd even say that the grouping rivals some of your modern ELR rifle groups at that range... well done guys

When I was just out of high school I knew a man who had fought in World War One in the Canadian Army. I had a ton of questions he was reasonably willing to answer. He talked about using the Ross rifle, which he liked very much, and the replacement of the Ross with the SMLE. He also talked about fairly large units doing volley fire at very long range. He said it could be surprisingly effective. Abram told me that the shooters usually couldn't see what they were firing at, but someone would draw out the target area and the location of the men in the trenches, figure firing solutions, and come up with spots at which the different units in the trenches would aim at and fire. They would be given the sight settings to use and told things like, "aim at the upper right corner of what is left of that shed over there". The group of men to the left of him would be given a slightly different aiming spot and the men to his right a different one yet. They would continue assigning aiming spots until they had the number of men they wanted shooting ready to go. If the officer was confident of their firing solution the men would be given the order, "at the whistle, fire ten (or five or fifteen) rounds using your assigned aiming point." If they weren't confident of the aiming point, they might have each unit with a specific aiming point fire only one round and an observer would see if an adjustment was needed. Then, after all the aiming points seemed right, the order would be given to fire the designated number of rounds. If several hundred people were given good aiming points and all let fly with their rounds in a short period of time, it could be very effective if you were shooting at a bunch of people getting ready to have a hot meal, or otherwise assembled in an area for whatever reason. If nothing else, it would be demoralizing to the men to realize they could possibly be hit by regular rifle fire by the enemy at such a distance.

That is the most impressive open sight shooting I have ever seen. No messing around, just fast incredibly well placed rounds. Gobsmacked 🇬🇧👍

There is a video here on UA-cam of a Marine Corp section pinned down by a single Afghan with a Lee Enfield .303 firing at 600m. Luckily they had a small stone wall to hide behind but they couldn't move. Eventually they called in an airstrike but I kind of hope he snuck away before it arrived. So much for the old girl being obsolete. Great shooting as usual Mark and great spotting by Sam!

50 - 100 guys firing with volley sights to suppress an enemy position? Perfect. I'm amazed it's that accurate. I always thought volley sights on old battle rifles were a joke but this has absolutely changed my mind.

This has brought back memories of my grandfather, who was a sniper in ww1 and probably shot the same rifle type. He was invalided out after a German sniper got him first. He was invalided out of the services, and had a depression in the back of his skull where the bullet hit him. He lived to the late'60's, a jolly, wonderful old man.

There you go the old 303 shot very well in those light conditions and distance and open sights…. And so did you Mark 👍

The very old Enfields only shot to about 3 or 4 degrees at best. Normal shot to shot variability at 3000yds makes accurate shooting really difficult. I have a No. 1 (I think it's from 1903) and is hard to hit the target at 700mtrs. The No 4 Mk2 (Long Branch - Canadian) is a totally different story. It's highly accurate and possibly could have hit that 3000yds target, with a top grade shooter such as yourself.

Definitely would not want to be out there making rude gestures to you. The idea of the volley sights is intriguing. Used for troop harassment, a bunch of British soldiers working the Enfield bolt quickly, apparently made the opposing force think they were being engaged by machine guns.

No direct hits, but considering the light, 10 second flight time and that bloody wind you guys always have, well done. I felt sorry for your little go-pro bottom right of target, I'll bet it was nervous.

I love it when you bring the old girls out for a walk. Modern high speed stuff is awesome, but the old girls are my favorite!!

What an awesome rifle. Love the sound a rifle like has when operating the bolt. Just a certain solid sound like shutting the door on a high quality vehicle. Awesome shooting for iron sights👍👍

Holy cow that was impressive! That zoom out at the end really put into perspective how far the target really was!

This was very impressive! I love historic firearms and to see you use the original sights at super long range is just to sweet! Great video!
