Hey there ! Do some long term math. Calculate the average of what you have done with expenses in a few months and put it up against the average of those revenue rates. Do this for an estimated 3,4 or 5 year period . You’ll find those loads don’t pay enough per mile , which forces you to run miles to make your bills. Miles equals maintenance and wear on the truck. Look in truck paper what that truck is worth after you run up the miles , versus what you are paying for it. You got the fuel efficient rig which is a plus but over time the rates will eat the truck alive, and your fuel bill. You need to make more in a shorter amount of time. Mega carriers have lots of perky benefits from their size , but their rates just force one to wear out the equipment too fast while making the low end of the o/o spectrum. Plus, your life is spent always driving…Go to a place where you can dispatch yourself and work on percentage. You’ll get more flexibility to choose better loads for you. I feel like those truck payments kill any real profit that could have been made… wouldn’t it be cheaper to find someone selling their truck and seller finance it?!
Absolutely. Wanted to try leasing to in order to protect against... say...idk.. the fifth wheel being bent. Just got a new one installed for free. Will later purchase the vehicle with a bank loan if everything works out.
Hey I just now found the other spreadsheets. Maybe you can do another video and go over the YTD (year end) and then also talk in detail about the MRP account and its funciton etc...... Thanks Oh...and NICE TRUCK!! I bet it feels good to be your the Boss and OWNER!!!
I'm planning on going over the MRP on not the next video but the one after. I'll show what is covered by Knight and how much of it. Stay tuned. What do you mean by YTD? The total profit section I added? What questions did you have on it?
1st year is tough. You have to rely on tax write offs. But the 2nd year and the following are better. Less spending hopefully. Save money for that automatic and engine.
Im a new driver for Knight. I went to the phoenix school and am based out of the tulare terminal. Going out with my trainer today as a matter of fact. I have yet to see more of your recent videos but what is your opinion of the lease program? I have been thinking about it and want to know the bottom line. Do it or no?
The fuel surcharge needs to be tracked for transparency. The rate changes daily so if you are getting the same thing frrom Phoenix to Indiana and back to Phoenix you are not really getting the 100% fuel surcharge the shipper is paying. The complete 100% fuel surcharge is to go to the truck. Not to be shared with the company and driver, or broker and driver. Many companies and brokers try to take a piece of this when they are to be. Please look into this as I'd like to see you succeed as a lease driver and to complete your lease so you will then have your own truck. Good Luck.
We get 100% of the fuel surcharge. The fuel surcharge changes week to week. It does not change per load. It is being tracked weekly on the "Fuel Surcharge" column. Of the spreadsheet. There's three different fuel surcharges at knight based on geographical location. I'm based on the west coast so I get the highest fuel surcharge. If you are based in Texas its a lot less and the east coast is in the middle.
Everyone’s gotta start somewhere. Once you got your numbers down over the next few months, just go buy a truck for 60,000/70,000 and lease on Mercer or Landstar. Kights ripping you off.
Does Knight put cab (spy) cam's in their trucks? I drove for Swift for about 4 years back in the mid 90's as a company driver (.25 cents PM) but spent more time sitting than running so got out of it. Always heard that knight trans was a better company. Hopefully now that they are one of the same they are better company's over all. Good luck to you in your new venture. Liked & sub'ed ya.
No it's nowhere near that much I know because I wasn't independent for well over 30 years... Self-employment tax is 15% Federal and state combined is 15% if you have dependents, And it's even lower than that if you file jointly with your spouse. And you end up getting a refund if you're paying a total of 30% when you file Of course it all depends on what your net profit is for the entire year if you are under $75,000 And there's a good chance working for these fleece companies is that you're not going to net a $100,000 of profit
Okay, $2000.00 for tires. That isn't too bad. I just dont like the other charges. Do they charge company drivers a deposit on the Quallcom? Do they charge company drivers for their property and buildings?

Sort of. Its been lowered to 3 months. So you need to company drive for three months and have 9 months OTR experience at any company before you can apply. So 3 months at knight and 9 months of experience.
Do you get to log "personal time" which doesn't count against your "legal" driving log time? I know it varies from company to company; with TransAm you can; with CRST, you cannot log personal time.
Personal Conveyance is allowed. You do not need to ask permission. I use it from time to time. As long as you dont go over around 50 miles they wont even contact you.
@@truckingthesevenseasWith personal conveyance, do you have to return to the starting point from which you started using it? Or can you go from point A to point B and then turn it off?
You are legally required to return to your starting point... Knight does not keep track that closely though so if you were to not return to the exact location you started in. Nobody will notice.

Do they control what tires your allowed to buy ? Or can you install the Michelin low rolling resistance tires ? Would they allow you to go to synthetic oil which equals lower churn and better fuel economy . Just going to the low resistance tires can save you 15000 in fuel costs a year . Also when you chose a lease truck do they allow you to take it to an independent mechanic to get checked out ? Everyone talking about the rates and complaining - I’d be more frustrated the fact that a giant company with in-house mechanics obviously doesn’t give the truck the most thorough do over between drivers/leasees. You should be walking into a truck that’s working great.

What most carriers do is charge you a per mile maintenance fee. Problem is that money is theirs if it’s not spent on actual maintenance, so they will cheap out on everything to keep the balance of their fund up
As a lease operator, they don’t know, what they don’t know. Basically paying rent to drive somebody else’s truck, with a load of restrictions to honor the lease.

All the best to you mate
I feel like those truck payments kill any real profit that could have been made… wouldn’t it be cheaper to find someone selling their truck and seller finance it?!
Absolutely. Wanted to try leasing to in order to protect against... say...idk.. the fifth wheel being bent. Just got a new one installed for free. Will later purchase the vehicle with a bank loan if everything works out.
Don’t see how it can possibly be worth it to run for that. A couple of months ago that was company driver pay
Take away the one time tire purchase and he made over $3600 for the week.No company driver made that in a week.
@@DougBeerman Your right, I make $3900 as a company driver and am still home on the weekends.
Buckeye to Albuquerque is an easy 4 buck a mile run WTH
wow ,lucky you got a used truck ,i retired paid off my home and retired 2yrs ago
Man give Knight that truck back and go get a job driving a tanker as an owner operator.
So you bought yourself a job in the worst freight market since I started in 2008...Good luck with that, Really mean it driver. Good luck
I bought 2 from Knight with low miles an warranty.
1st year is tough. You have to rely on tax write offs. But the 2nd year and the following are better. Less spending hopefully. Save money for that automatic and engine.
Thank you! I will.
If you are brand new wait atleast a year. See if you like trucking first...
Good luck brother.
Thanks for being out there, making sure freight moves.
FKJOEB!
great video, 🙏🏽 thank you
Awesome. Just wondering - do you have an academic background?
Yes I have a degree in History. I was also a communication officer (Computer Geek) in the Marine Corps.
those extra charges will end up killing you
Do a video on how to do a spreadsheet w numbers app on iPhone
Everyone’s gotta start somewhere. Once you got your numbers down over the next few months, just go buy a truck for 60,000/70,000 and lease on Mercer or Landstar. Kights ripping you off.
Nice explanation. Step-by-step. Regards
Glad it was helpful!
Get your LLC do not operate as a sole proprietorship. If you do you might as well be a company driver
Nice spreadsheet
Glad it was helpful!
I feel like the lease program is predatory at best. Does knight have a owners program?
Yes its the same program really, minus the financing of the vehicle.
Maybe you could get a 5th wheel off of a parts trucks? Surely they keep some parts trucks around??
They ordered one and luckily it was there the next day. Im back on the road
Knight doesn't have spy cams but swift does
@@truckingthesevenseas Thanks
Don’t forget you still need to
Deduct your federal and state income taxes (about 40%) plus an additional 15.6% self employment tax!
No it's nowhere near that much
I know because I wasn't independent for well over 30 years...
Self-employment tax is 15%
Federal and state combined is 15% if you have dependents, And it's even lower than that if you file jointly with your spouse.
And you end up getting a refund if you're paying a total of 30% when you file
Of course it all depends on what your net profit is for the entire year if you are under $75,000
And there's a good chance working for these fleece companies is that you're not going to net a $100,000 of profit
Hey Buddy, let's talk about your Net Profit Lease operator in a few months ???? I would like to see if you still in business ??????
We will be. I'll be posting a weekly update on how things are going. Good bad and ugly.
Let me know when you received the bill for the truck $ 450 a wk equal $1800 a month for a new one uh!!!!!
Okay, $2000.00 for tires. That isn't too bad. I just dont like the other charges. Do they charge company drivers a deposit on the Quallcom? Do they charge company drivers for their property and buildings?
Being in trucking since 2014, you are getting scammed with 1,77 a mile , our average is 2,28 that’s a big difference dude
got damn mannn not a single load over $2 a mile thats wild, listen notbing really should be under $3 a mile but of course it is thats tha economy buuuuuut damn...do you know your cost per mile to be able to be running those loads?

Great video bro… I was going to work for knight years ago,but you had to become a company driver for 6mths before you could lease a truck…. Is that still going on over there?
Sort of. Its been lowered to 3 months. So you need to company drive for three months and have 9 months OTR experience at any company before you can apply. So 3 months at knight and 9 months of experience.
Unbelievable that you are making less at SWIFT than I did 17 years ago when I leased my 1st truck 😢😢😂😂😢😢😢

Great video breakdown. Where did you get the spreadsheet from?
I made it from scratch. Its available in the about section.

If your trying to make that kind of money net . Come to J.B HUNT up in the northeast DCS .
@@jessebarrios7534incorrect fmcsa law don’t required that but you can’t used to reposition near to your next load that is the gray area so is better to come to exactly where you stat to use the Pc so dot can’t have any Grau area to mess with you

Please do a week 2,3, and 4. Do they take a percentage of each load? Last time I did a lease purchase, the company took 30% of each load.
holly molly 30% 🤬
No the pay a flat rate mileage. Not percentage based. I will do a week 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, etc as long as I am in the lease.

This should be interesting to watch but it’s convincing me to be thankful for my dedicated regional job so far .
Tires aren’t saving anyone $15000 a year in fuel.
@@brianhoppenrath8379 they are if they increase your fuel economy buy nearly 10 percent . And they will .

Do you train?
After taxes and I work nine hours a day local driver I make that in five days
Everyone talking about the rates and complaining - I’d be more frustrated the fact that a giant company with in-house mechanics obviously doesn’t give the truck the most thorough do over between drivers/leasees. You should be walking into a truck that’s working great.
Hey Captain! Great video. excellent excel work and description!! All you needed tho was to just show a "normal " week...youknow..after the first 2 or 3 weeks which are always wonky and have one off payments etc. Awesome work tho!
lastly...Can you explain exactly how all the mx gets done?j And the MRP accounting?? Do you hve any warranty?
Covering the Maintenance and MRP account in a couple videos. I'll be adding an "Average Week" column soon. Just haven't added it due to lack or data. Its coming though.
What most carriers do is charge you a per mile maintenance fee. Problem is that money is theirs if it’s not spent on actual maintenance, so they will cheap out on everything to keep the balance of their fund up
Companies drivers make more with those miles. WTF 🤬
they have alot of those headlights sitting around if u give the mechanic a couple of dollars he will give you one, no biggie
As a lease operator, they don’t know, what they don’t know. Basically paying rent to drive somebody else’s truck, with a load of restrictions to honor the lease.
Dude I ran 2600 miles last week as a company driver and made $2500. Please for the love of god just run that thing until you get enough experience to leave and get the fuck away from them. I always knew they ripped y’all off but I had no idea it was that horrible…
