I appreciate Jake’s folder system as well..but I aspire to AT LEAST Lee’s system! I may be the most disorganized person of all time. This month’s major goal is getting my files in order.
I, like Jake, have to have my stuff organized similarly to compensate for how my brain works. I would get frustrated with Lee's system. But we all work different ways. 🙂 I think Lee needs to do some robots digitally and some traditionally.
Drawing on an iPad after working on Cintiq for so long feels like going back to a pocket sketchbook after painting on an easel. They're both useful but for different tasks. No clue how people illustrate full books on iPads but I suspect sorcery 😄
😴 organizing my files is the bane of my art journey! im mainly afraid of losing things, I've lost so much art i made ages ago and wish i had more to compare for my progress. i appreciate the boring stuff!
I have am iPad Pro and a huge Cintiq Pro and since I started using iPad for art and comics, I haven't touched the Cintiq, there's no competition for how fast work can be done on an iPad. Perhaps the only thing that would tip the balance for me would be if I had a Cintiq with touch, as I find being able to zoom in out and around with my fingers on iPad basically wins for me!
Love my iPad pro but I wish I got the bigger screen, whenever I see someone drawing on one bigger than 11" I'm so jealous! Otherwise it's hands-down a win.
I just got a cintiq 22 after using the iPad and I agree, there's just nothing like the ability to pinch zoom. I don't know if you're the same way, but I also think the range of pressure sensitivity of the apple pencil is far greater than the cintiq, although that may be due to my pen not being the pro pen.
@@t-bowdude6631 the drawing experience as a whole is just much nicer on the iPad, although I'm getting through nibs like they're going out of fashion now that I'm using a matte screen protector 😂
Cringe! I got the same invite Lee, I was disgusted. Couldn't believe the $50 per spread. I am so sad and shocked illustrators actually take these jobs. I always wonder where in this world would someone work for pennies. NOT even the guy cleaning the toilets will take that. Soooo disgusting.
While I do understand Lee's take on it for students or for free advertising on your own projects, overall I hate contests for artists. I think the majority of them just want free work and contests really devalue all of us and our profession. Ask a bunch of plumbers or attorneys to submit work and then tell them you'll pick the one you like the best. See how that goes over. I'm with Will; this "free work" in my experience has only led to people/companies who want more free work. Here's a good example: "Where Women Create" magazine is looking for someone to design a new logo for them and then you get a pittance reward and "exposure." How ironic that an org that claims to support women artists and profits off them wants work for free.
i agree overall with you. although i think there is some value to contests, as long as the client does NOT own the work. It forces many students to actually nail a concept which is very tough. most art schools are lazy in this regard and students can do whatever they want. The other thing is there is a value to giving something a go and saying "this is the best i can do right now". Too many times we say "oh, its just a sketch" or "i would have done better with more time" etc. A contest forces your best effort and that has a value all its own.
Lee you're killing me with your clunky laptop/screen extenders xD Buy a cheap gaming pc, and an ultrawide monitor and you're good to go. Also XP-Pen looks like a great tablet line but for those wondering, you can't use Procreate with it because Procreate is IOS based and the XP-Pen tablets are Andriod.
The screen extenders are for my portable set up and i carry it all in my laptop bag. I have a big monitor and computer set up at my home studio. But this set up has to be portable, light, and easy to move from place to place. I also use it when i am traveling. Its a great setup for that purpose! : )
Throughout my exp I've seen some good / not good things about contests. They can help students and emerging artists gain footing. But it's my view that most artists would do better to spend time elsewhere - volunteerism, local artists groups, their own products. If you're the kind of person who is super sensitive about your creations and perhaps prone to comparing yourself to others, avoid competitions! And just be aware that almost all contest organizers are about promoting themselves, their bottom lines and business interests - not those of artists. Great episode guys!
I also appreciated Jake’s super nerdy file structure method! Some of us need this to be spelled out to us… no sleep emoji required 😝
Appreciate the folder structure as much as I appreciate the banter, thanks as always guys!
I actually appreciated Jake's folder structure.
🙌
Glad to see the whole gang back together!
I love the folder hierarchy method of Jake's 🌟

I was laughing so much during this episode. Thanks for brightening my day!
same. my structure is pretty much the same structure
😴 I label my archives just like Lee, I have folders for each year. That way it's so easy to look back and see my art process ✨

I'm with Jake, my ear lit up and loved hearing the organisation tips. Super curious to hear Will's system now 😭🤖

37:50 just making this note for myself for later, thanks Jake

Great episode, even greater advice!! Thanks!!!

Yep,I agree, I invested in smaller cintiq pro with touch as for me its important difference, my old ipad is superb for inking for me though:)
I'm considering selling my cintiq for a smaller touch model! Although I'd be very tempted to buy a Movink if they make a 16" version

Google password lol. I love the idea of sharing your favorite artists or artists you discover doing rad things. This comment brought to you by Gucci™.
You can check praful sawant work as well, he also have beautiful water color, famously known for his watercolor
yep, his watercolours are good.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that Lee's lowball client was Bear Tale

I don’t think you understand, I’m taking that setup on the go to be portable. It’s not a desktop setup. My desktop setup is 2 huge monitors
