      D W, the first European language in North America was Spanish, almost 100 years before the British arrived. Christopher Columbus wrote his diary in Spanish. The first cities and states in the US (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Nevada, California, etc.) have Spanish names cause they were founded by Spanish conquerers. The dollar was a Spanish currency. Spanish army helped American army fighting against the British in the independence war.... if you love the US and its history you should also love Spanish language and learn it.

    I'm a Mexican and I think that it is better to have a country united by a common language. It makes it a lot easier. You shouldn't have to learn German if you want to travel east, or French when you travel west, Spanish in the south, this makes it very hard. I think it's great to have people learn other languages but there has to be a unifying language

    • @supermonk3y07
      @supermonk3y07 11 років тому

      Well for the US it'd be easiest to be English. You can give Spanish a great degree of autonomy in the southwest though, kind of like Gallego in Galicia, or Catalán in Catalonia

    • @ocarreonjr
      @ocarreonjr 11 років тому

      You and I know very well a language doesn't unify neither achieves the opposite (look at the americas, way more divided than the EU). It's all about bullshit being discussed at Congress by haters. People learns a language that gives sense to their day-to-day actions. "Disrespectful to have a city in the US whose official language is spanish?" Bullshit again. What's next? Mexicans will have to forgo catholic faith to get into the US? Man, let's keep it straight: no adopting the so-called "american culture" (which I still struggle to identify), no willingness to stay there, appart from economical reasons.
      Just for the record, I speak french, english and danish (spanish, obviously) and would like my fellow Mexicans living in the US to learn english.

    • @supermonk3y07
      @supermonk3y07 11 років тому +1

      No, don't take this the wrong way. I'm Mexican, and my native language is Spanish. I really like my language and take pride in it. I think it's one of the most beautiful languages in the world. I think Mexicans should keep their language and the Mexicans who speak Spanglish, they should pick up a book on Spanish and learn it. However, in the US, the Mexicans should learn English since it's the majority language in the United States. The southwestern United States is a complicated matter though since it was part of Mexico/ the New Spain. I was in another video where a Texan girl refused to say the Mexican national anthem, " because it was AMERICA OMG it was horrible... " These guys were commenting on why she was smart and stuff. I think that they were really stupid. Anyways, if there were other people in Mexico or Spain or Colombia they should learn Spanish, if there are people in Japan they should learn Japanese, if there are people in Germany they should learn German, if there are people in Somalia they should learn Somali. Also it's even better that you do since it gives you advantages and puts you up to the persons level. You are not disadvantaged and also you will make friends with the locals easier and better, doesn't everyone want that? Like even making an effort is good, I know how it is to learn a new language it's hard and takes a long time, but sometimes even when you know a few basic words, they open up and even help you

    • @supermonk3y07
      @supermonk3y07 11 років тому

      Nice to meet you Oscar, it's a delight to meet another Mexican polyglot :). I also am at an intermediate level in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese. My minor is Japanese and I've been studying Chinese, Portuguese, Malaysian, Indonesian and some Arabic and Korean on my own. I actually have a UA-cam channel of me speaking and teaching Asian languages and other languages to both the English speakers and Spanish speakers. Check it out if you're really into languages ;)
      Also, that other video about the Texan girl and the other people commenting left a sour taste in my mouth and reminds me how rude and hateful other people can get. I felt like I was the crazy one trying to reason with them at the end.

    • @ocarreonjr
      @ocarreonjr 11 років тому +1

      And you too! I've never tried with asian languages, but I'm quite sure it can only get better. I'm living in France now, and there's a large arab community in my city. It's probably a good idea starting to learn their language and get a significant approach to their culture.
      Poor girl. Shamefully you can still find those closed-minded in the world... Not our fault!

    English is the lanuage of this country!! However if they are going to chose to have only one foreign language, that discriminates against everyone else who does not have there language included. No one told these people to come live here. Americans should not adapt to immigrants. They should adapt to us!

    I am a Hispanic but live in Florida, raised by English speaking parents, I think the US should have an Official language of English, because in South Florida, everything has been given to Spanish speakers, there are 7 different Spanish language channels, all city services will only hire people who can speak spanish, Many Americans who don't speak Spanish can't find jobs, because companies can legally discriminate against non Spanish Speakers under Florida law.

  • @Princeroo12

    As a polyglot speaking German, English, and Spanish, I think it's great to encourage learning foreign languages and all that. But this is America. I think if you come here to live permanently, you should have a good understanding of the English language. Just as you would need to do so if you went to Germany. You'd need that to communicate and all that Jazz. I don't think us Americans should be narrow minded about the situation though, like we can't come across as a bunch of tyrants.

      I just mean "this is America" as in it's most spoken language is English in the US. There wasn't any other underlying meaning to that statement. I'm not the kind of person to say "this is america, so speak english or leave!" I am totally open to people learning/speaking any language they want (I learned 4) but i just was trying to say it would be useful for people to know english since it's the most commonly spoke language in the US. That's all!

    America is an English speaking country. I think it should be the official language. Why that has never been implemented as a law I don't know. I don't mind people speaking different languages, in fact, I want to learn other languages. I'm not gonna go to France, or Germany and expect them to know English. If I chose to live there, I'd have to know their language. Thats all, if they want to live in America and get by, then learn English.

USA want just the "good" things about being empire: political control over other countries and wealth extraction from every place and every people concentrating it, but don't want the "bad" side: to have immigration and losing the "purity" of its culture (language, for example). About mix of Spanish and English, this is a phenomenon happening right now in USA. Most spanish speakers at hispanic countries don't like it because feel the particularities and beauty of language is losing, but this phenomenon has happened many times in human history. Maybe in future there will be a new wonderful language, but for now I prefer spanish with its own particular form.... :) But I know, nothing is forever....

    I don't like their discrimination against immigrants. But let's be clear on this immigrants are people that come from other countries other than the United States. Not just Spanish speaking countries. There is a huge job discrimination in the city of Miami or I would say South Florida to be exact against people who do not speak Spanish. The trick is they use this word called bilingual. No matter how much degrees or experience you have within that job if you're not bilingual or I would say don't know how to speak Spanish you would not get that job. It is not fair for anyone living in Miami who does not know how to speak Spanish but has experience in degrees in which the career they are applying for should be denied because they don't speak a language that is not the national language.

    You missed out the most widely spoken indigenous language of the UK; Cymraeg/Welsh.. All of us Welsh speakers are proud to be bi-lingual (either speaking Welsh/English in the UK or Welsh/Spanish in Argentina) and we are encouraged to learn more languages. The most popular extra languages for Welsh speakers in the UK to learn are Breton, Irish, French, Spanish and Japanese. In Argentina it is English, Portuguese and Chinese. Cymry am byth! Welsh forever! Viva la galés!

    In Hispania (roman province which is now Spain) latin language merged with language of peoples as celtiberic and visigodos producing several languages, one of them is Castilian, better knows as Spanish. It began to speak since Middle Age but around 800 years ago there is literature and poetry with rules and grammar. Of course for modern spanish speakers is hard to understand the original version of that, sometimes those texts are "translated" to a language form closer to speakers today.

    This argument does not hold, because even though it's somewhat true, the truth is that the USA did steal all of the states with Spanish names, there is also the fact that most american are migrants, comers from countries in Europe whee they speak different languages and therefore for most of them it's the most logical answer, to speak in English only, but for Spanish speaking people it's more difficult first of all because the Spanish language is much broader spoken than any other language in the world, add to that the fact that most Americans live with the fear that all of the Spanish states are going to be stolen back from them one day and who knows it may just happen. Plus the Spanish and the English have always clashed on this issue.

    Yo soy español. En España hay 1 lengua oficial y 3 más cooficiales. Tener un estado multilingüe es complicado, pero es más justo que los que excluyen todas las lenguas excepto una. El español es una lengua internacional con mucho peso y en realidad el bilingüismo es algo muy positivo para EEUU porque lo conecta culturalmente con más regiones del mundo aparte de las anglofonas. Además es ridículo excluir una lengua que históricamente ha estado vinculada a la región mucho antes que el inglés y que forma parte de su historia desde el principio.

    • @osotubero80
      @osotubero80 10 років тому

      Are you talking about Spanglish or about Mexican Spanish? Anyway.
      "We never crossed the border, the border crossed us?" Hahaha!
      First: Despite it's not the cause of this inmigration wave, US crossed the border and got a huge amount of Mexico's territory in XIX Century (that's why the city of this video is called "El Cenizo" not "Cinder Town" or kindish).
      Second: During XX Century up today, not US citizens, but US multinational companies and National Intelligence Agencies had crossed the borders southward impeding a healthy developement of Latinamerican regions, using imperialistic polices, getting huge profits, and seeding poverty between those people.
      So US crossed the border first, and here we are the consecuences.
      In the other hand, this is a border town, and people don't get a language just by crossing the border, it's normal there are people who doesn't speak English. Instead of forgetting spanish in official bussines, that doesn't help to integration, US should have an educational plan to teach English to those who doesn't speak it.

    • @dddemon777
      @dddemon777 10 років тому

      Again more crap about countries polices. Why must you make up such lies? You cannot "bend" the truth so what you say is real, when it isn't . Those countries asked for US businesses to be there. Get your facts straight! More lies about country boundaries again? FACT - each of the countries in south America already had borders. Maybe it was wrong for the US to accept those invitations to set up shop there to them. By what lies you say, the US held a gun to their heads and demanded we have our businesses there! Do you know how insane you sound? Pander your bull shit history to the fools who believe your lies. I know what is actually history and not your "version" of it. And as for the "SPIES" you talk of... Duh every FUCKING country has them you twit. Some more than others but seriously to say one country is NOT using them is just plain wrong! Each of these countries were not financially solvent. Why would they invite foreign business if they were... Please! These people need to "own" up to what they did and fix their shit and stop coveting ours.

    • @osotubero80
      @osotubero80 10 років тому

      Don't get anger with my answer, I haven't any thing against US citizens except your blind faith in your rulers. How can you say that those countries asked US businesses to be there? Shops aren't the big problem, Monsanto, Coca-cola, Microsoft and kindish are the problem. Multinational lobbies push governments to make able the policies they want to, they fund olligarchies to rule for their interest against people's ones. Twits of CIA aren't the big problem, the overthrow of democracies to put fascist dictatorships in the power, are the problem. Of course that countries are not finantially solvent, when they have tried to be, there was your country there to impede it by force, by seizing and boicotting, by scaming finantially via FMI, etc. ¿They invite you? FACTS: es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperialismo_estadounidense (it's better to read it in the spanish version, in the English one you don't realize how far US has gone, maybe because you don't want to realize it, by thinking that "these people need to "own" up to what they did and fix their shit and stop coveting ours.") And yes, US History sounds insane because IS insane, like any other Empire. Anyway, you don't have the monopolly of that kind of insanity in the world, Russia or China are both good exemples today, the problem is when you high up the flag of democracy and freedom in one hand and in the other you opress in the name of your comercial interests. Came on, do you really continue believing that lie? because in the rest of the World we don't. We call that "Hipocresía", hahaha, exactly what we spanish did with religion there... centuries ago.
      New word in Spanish: HIPOCRESÍA: When finally you find your borders full of peolpe that run away from the consecuences of your policies and you don't recognize your responsability.

    California: from Caliente + Fornia "Hot cavern"
    Texas: "Tiles"

And for your info, im not in a fucking English lit or grammar class this is UA-cam so why the hell should I be focused on how I'm writing? Please let people state what they want and stop with the bitchiness and drama, find something else to do.. like I said what I stated was the truth, be proud of your native ancestors not proud of the people who murdered and plundered them etc, also the Spanish were the ones who started slavery in the new world , why the hell would I be proud of people who did all that and their language? And Oscar, you are worse than a female . Why do you sound so bitchy? I guess you are looking for someone to argue with aren't you? Find something else to do, kid, don't be mad about facts, be angry about lies. Right now in some parts of mexico there are native people who do not speak a word of Spanish, the world mexico is not even a Spanish world, the world Cuba is not a Spanish world, mexico city was not founded by the Spaniards it was already in existence. Be proud of your ancestors who occupied north central and south america for thousands of years, not the folks who stole the land and forced some of your ancestors to speak their language, I wish I had native blood in my veins , I would be so proud of that. Bottom line, Spanish will never be a native language of the Americans , it is a language that was forced unto the natives. It is a European language, no wonder most people from Spain look down on you folks from Latin america, they despise the fact that their language is now spoken by some of you folks and a lot of them hate the way you speak their language, if you have native blood maybe you need to learn a native language of your ancestors who were forced to speak another. Only a jackass would say they aware proud of Spanish. The Spanish people of Spain are the only ones who should be proud of Spanish, unless your parents are direct descendants of Spain then you should have no reason to be proud, some of you have way more native blood than European, yet some of you easily forget what the natives went through. Quite sad. I'm not here to argue and fight with anyone, I'm way more mature than that, if you guys choose to continue arguing it shows how immature you both are, I'm done. I will not response.
