ECHELON EX4S first impressions! Echelon Connect EX-4s COSTCO indoor bike review

  • This is is my Echelon EX4S initial impressions review. I just opened figured out how to assemble the Echelon EX-4s and my first thoughts are this is a pretty good indoor cycling bike from costco for about $1000.
    It will be interesting to see how the Echelon connect EX4S compares to the $500 walmart echelon connect sport which that video is coming soon so stay tuned. The Echelon EX4S comes with a free year of echelon app services from my understanding. The flywheel of the Echelon EX4S feels really nice in comparison to the cheaper echelon bike. If you're thinking about getting a peloton bike, the echelon bike may be a good peloton alternative. the echelon ex3 is about the same price as this bike. also the echelon ex5 and echelon ex5s are similar to this bike in the mechanics.

    Thank you for this review! I purchased one from Costco on Saturday, assembled and tried it out Sunday. Very pleased so far! Assembly was straight-forward. My only confusion was on the console, the app, and connecting the bike to headphones and HR monitor via Bluetooth as there really isn't any specific documentation/instruction for the 4s. I figured out, 1 - since the 4s comes with the console, you don't really need the app on your phone to ride, and in fact, connecting your phone to the bike actually confuses the bike. Just use the console and save the app for checking your stats when you are not riding. 2 - you *can* connect your Bluetooth headphones by pressing the headphone symbol in the upper right of the monitor. It appears when you are riding. 3 - for Heart Rate (HR) I was able to connect my Apple watch to the bike by downloading an app called "BlueHeart" to both my phone and my watch. It took a little playing around - but it works.

    Thanks for your review. I saw this and then picked one up my local Costo. They were out of stock late December to early January and seem to be stocked now. Your review was pretty much on point. After three weeks, I enjoy the courses and I suppose everyone picks out their favorite instructors. Mine are Brian and Amy Hager, along with Jama Oliver and that's based on music and style of motivation. The bet one year cost of $600 is a bargain. $1,000 for the bike less $400 for free one year subscription that comes with the Costco deal.

    I did buy the EX-5 on your recommendation, but I do have to say, I have one gripe about it. Not everyone has long. gorilla arms and can just reach out and touch that screen. The tablet holder is so far from the seat, I have to stand up and lean over the handlebars to get to it. I actually ordered a tablet holder that I will clamp right on the loop part of the handlebars and it will put the tablet right near the front of the handlebars.
    Other than that, I love the bike. Now I just need to get my fat, old butt back in the kind of shape I was in when I was riding 4-5000 miles a year with the club. This is going to be painful. ;)

    Another awesome video, thank you. I picked up the Proform Tour de Frace based on your last review and I was wondering what Video Ecosystem ( iFit, Echelon, Peloton) you like best? As you know you get a one-year subscription with iFit with the Proform bike. It's nice that the iFit instructor can change the resistance on your bike during a class. So I would love to see a video with the comparisons of the three subscription services. And since your room is getting pretty full, I can help by picking up the Peloton and moving it to my house to give you more space. :-)

    We tackled assembling the bike as a family project. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzg0clhbtRf2gGxPkVETFKJJKGqdsorQu The package is heavy, but I have 2 teen boys that were able to move it. The written instructions were great- we didn't need to watch the videos, but it was good knowing that the option was there if we needed it. After we were able to get it set up, the boys each rode 3 miles and I rode 8 and the bike stayed quiet. The display is easy to reset, and you can put it on whichever setting you are using (time, distance, calories, etc). I will say that my butt is a little sore from the seat, but that could be because I haven't rode in a while. While it is comfortable for me, it was not comfortable with the seat position for my friend (could not move the seat back far enough and he slightly looked like a kid riding a tricycle that he had outgrown). He also said that the seat hurt his manly parts. We are going to look for a different seat that will be compatible with this bike for him.I did purchase the Wahoo Cadence sensor and strapped it to the crank of one of the pedals. This will sync with my Apple Watch, iPhone and will import data in to my Health app. Wahoo does have other sensors available other than cadence. I can also keep either my phone or my iPad on the display and they both feel pretty secure.

      yes, freestyle mode works without subscription currently. you may want to check out the EX3 or EX5 amzn.to/360Nucf if you don't care about the screen or using echelon because you can hook up your phone to get the echelon stats and also bring your own tablet to put on the bike and use peloton app or whatever app you want

    Anyway, I’m a new rider and I know nothing. My bike had an app update this morning and now my watts are running lower than my cadence. Previously it would be above my cadence and varied with my resistance. Now with the update the watts are significantly lower. Example would be cadence 80, resistance 10, watts around 60’s. I thought I would love my new Echelon EX-5 but one of the main components of any bike is the resistance knob as you and any instructor during a ride change the resistance ( how easy or difficult pedaling) is changed while riding. My red knob is stupid and totally (imho) lacking functionality. To the point of returning the bike. While one is riding instead of simply making one movement or two to change resistance (like changing gears on a normal bike) you have to turn and turn and turn to change one,s resistance. Going from mini Mum to maximum takes 20-30 turns which is retarded given one is listening to an instructor or yourself to make an immediate change in resistance. I thought maybe I needed to hook up the electrical as you can not feel the knob tightening as you turn it- turns out the bike does not need to be connected to power to change resistance. You do need to choose your bike to see the resistance “number” then you have cadence “81” these are your “metrics”. Power output, calories, output,
    Anyway good luck as to why echelon made the resistance so difficult to change. Flywheel of course is better than a $500 bike- every huge turn on knob moves resistance “3” numbers whatever that means as you don’t really feel it until you are at resistance 20- top max resistance is around 32- max

      The resistance will not change unless you have an active class running. The bike is very proprietary. No way to cast screen. No way to use Peloton app after the year of United is over. No integration of Apple watch HR monitor. No way to upgrade screen without losing Cadence sensor and Resistance adjustment. Even though it is a very smooth bike, we are returning it to Costco.

    Seems like the bike is a little rushed to market. Why would you have to 'attach' the screen via bluetooth to a bike that it's already physically attached to. Curious if the screen will only work with their app .. that would be a major negative. Why pay $1000 for the bike and then your forced to pay for their service. Would much prefer this to be an open platform. Definitely a positive that the resistance knob appears to have 3 levels for a full turn although I don't mind 1 turn per level on mine . Also, only a 10.1 tablet.. aren't those like $100 - $150. Keep up the great reviews!!!.. I currently have a echelon sport connect and I'm very happy with it.

    • @paulloren66
      @paulloren66 3 роки тому +6

      This bike fits squarely in between an ex-3 and the ex-5. The ex-3 is $1000 and the ex-5 for $1200. Neither bike has a built in screen nor do they come with free Echelon Fit subscription. That will cost you either $40/mo or $400 for one year pre paid. So for the same price as the ex-3, the Costco exclusive is giving you a built in 10.1 screen & and a free year of service...that's at minimum a $500 value !
      Take advantage of the free year of service & either renew it next year or don't and just use the bike in Free Ride mode. If you went with a Peloton bike (not bike plus ) you are going to spend $2000 just for the bike & another $480 ($40/mo) for the connected service which is required...so its going to cost you at least $1500 more for the Peloton during year one. You can than switch over to Peloton digital access in year 2 and only pay $13/mo vs $40/mo saving yourself another $324 each year . You can run Peloton app on a roku / fire stick etc or you can run a tablet or phone while tracking all your metrics : cadence, power, speed, distance, resistance, hr etc on the built in Echelon screen
