  • Viñales, a small town built on tobacco growing, has become the Cuban capital of eco-tourism. Time seems to stand still here. In this region, the regime never applied the agrarian reforms. No doubt because Fidel Castro always depended on Cuban cigars as a source of foreign currency.
Much to the delight of tourists, who are drawn here by the strange backdrop of the Mogotes, these steep mountains that date back to the era of the dinosaurs. Surrounded by this limestone landscape, Paco, local tobacco producer, seems unperturbed by the changes that are looming.

The decomposed limestone soil and micro climate make this the best tobacco growing region. Also what gives Havana's their characteristic "heady" smoke is lithium naturally occurs in the soil here. No other place in the world has lithium in the soil where tobacco is grown. White long ash is also diagnostic of Havana's. The African country of Cameroon "toothy" also produces wrapper tobacco that also has white ash due to chemical composition of soil.
