    I think Maresca is the guy. I never understood the admiration for Poch who seemed to be 0% tactics and 100% vibes. I'm anticipating something more like what we saw under Tuchel, hopefully with a better cutting edge. Let's go!

    We need to make sure we actually give Maresca time. No point in recycling the same thing every season getting a manager in and getting rid of him at the end of the season. If he doesn’t succeed, the board needs to be changed before he is. But I am hopefully with him.

    There are areas i thought you mentioned that killed us last season:
    1. Defending our back post attacking it the opposite.
    2. Shooting from distance.
    3 . Organised marking in set piece situation.
    4. Signing a set piece specialist. We wasted thousands of corners,free kicks .

    What worries me is that Maresca has a single way to play that was okay in the Championship but untested at Prem level. And he will not bend from it. He will not learn lessons. He will not change to accomodate for things that just don't work. Playing the one true tactic is more important than actually winning, and if the one true tactic doesn't work then it cannot be him that is at fault, and it cannot be the system. That, to me, feels like the mindset of a fanatic with an ultimate truth, and fanatics are inherently dangerous. Ultrimate truths are usually neither. Thus I hope he isn't that inflexible. I hope he is more willing to change things up to fit the situation. Otherwise I reckon we're hosed.
    Another worry is that Cole Palmer is destined for the right winger slot, unsupported by a fullback, unsupported by a competent midfielder. Just all alone, naked and isolated, and not that hard to mark out of a game. That's a direct consequence of both fullbacks being defensive and neither of the obvious choices for the Ndidi role being that much of an attacking threat. Who cares if Caicedo has a shot or two from 20-25 yards?
    Which then leads to the next question, is Cole Palmer even the best right winger for this tactic? Might he get benched by Madueke? Might we do the De Bruyne one more time, having a world class player shoved out because the coach just doesn't want to use him?

    • @monocfc
      @monocfc  Місяць тому +3

      Tell me, have you ever seen Pep Guardiola or Klopp change their style? Arteta?
      No. Because when something is working, if it's not broken you don't fix it.
      Yes there's a step up in competition coming into the premier league but our players are also much better than Leicester's are, so it cancels out.
      Maresca's style is almost the exact same that Pep/Arteta uses as he's a disciple of the Spaniard, and we've seen how successful that has been in the Premier League for years now - I'm not worried.
      As for Cole, he's not going to be playing at RW in this system most likely, he'll be playing as an inside 10. Maresca likes wingers that are fast and able to beat their markers 1v1, and Madueke or Angelo are far better suited to that.

    • @monochromaticspider
      @monochromaticspider Місяць тому +2

      @@monocfc Yes, I have seen Pep and Klopp change their styles.
      City early days had less strikery, more forwardy number 9's and they had a season with a false nine "no striker" approach as well. Now they're playing Haaland, the most strikery striker that ever struck the Prem.
      They used to be have two defending fullbacks and attack with two midfielders, but recently they're letting a fullback forward but are less gung ho in midfield.
      Klopp originally used double wingbacks, with three defensive-minded midfielders. But these last few years he started trying to make the midfield less heavy, more ball-playing.
      Liverpool used to suffer against deep defenses because it neutered their wingbacks a lot and their midfielders were terrible going forward. That is less the case now.
      The core concepts are mostly the same but how the team expresses them changes. And that's really my point here. I worry that Maresca is a little too focused on one particular way of expressing what he wants to do, to the point where it is basically the only thing he wants to do.
      And as for Palmer, how is he going to be inside right if there's nobody on the outside? Where in that Leicester style would he fit, now that we've gone and bought KDH? Because I agree that he's probably worse than Madueke at the job Maresca wanted his right winger to do at Leicester.

    • @monocfc
      @monocfc  Місяць тому +2

      @@monochromaticspider Those changes have come over multiple seasons, I'm talking about throughout a season have their styles changed? No.
      And I just said, Madueke will be outside of Palmer if he's the inside 10. I've detailed the system in previous videos but Enzo's system sets up like this:
      GK
      RCB LCB LB
      RB DM
      RW CM CM LW
      ST
      The personnel in those roles will change throughout the season, we have a lot more games and will need to rotate. All depends on who impresses in pre-season and who Enzo sees as starters.
      At this current stage it seems as if Palmer will be on the RW (which is perfectly okay, he's played there all season for us) with KDH and Caicedo in the Box-to-box roles, Enzo the deepest midfielder with James beside him.
      But that will change depending on what we need for each game, as I discussed in the "Manage the Profiles" section - Lavia can come in if we need to be more solid defensively, Madueke and come in if we need a more direct winger, etc.
      Enzo can be stubborn with his system if he changes the personnel within the system, which is what I expect him to do. My point was that I don't want him to do what Poch did and immediately rip up the entire script when you could just change a few lines of dialogue to make the story complete.

    • @monochromaticspider
      @monochromaticspider Місяць тому +2

      @@monocfc First of all, I'm not asking for a wishy-washy coach that can't make up his mind. I don't think anyone is. But I do want a degree of utilitarianism and willingness to learn.
      You can argue that the changes of Pep and Klopp are over a longer time span, which is fair, but they're still making those changes. What they try to do is largely "the same", but how they do it changes. Some of that is player availability, some of it is natural tinkering.
      You suggest Cole Palmer as inside right. How does that happen if Maresca doesn't compromise? RW in the Leicester system is outside right.
      And Palmer can't just cut inside if there's no outside right to support him. You mention his play for us as RW this season, but our RW always had a fullback pushing up on the outside.
      Now, if Maresca is willing to compromise and tinker a bit with the system then I'm not too worried. Compromising and tinkering to get the most from the respective players is the difference between good managers and great managers.
      But for some reason, we're all expecting Maresca to start with and mostly stay with the Leicester system in just about the exact same configuration that he used at Leicester, despite being at a new club with different players competing in a different league.
      And if Maresca does that, and KDH takes that left side number 8, and Caicedo takes the right side number 8, and Madueke is a better choice for a Maresca RW... Then there's not really going to be an inside right slot for Palmer with a Madueke or a Gusto on the outside, is there?
      Honestly, I just don't see how Cole Palmer fits into Maresca's Leicester, particularly not if KDH is starting. And if we're not making the most out of Palmer then isn't that an enormous mistake?

    • @monocfc
      @monocfc  Місяць тому +3

      Who's to say Maresca isn't willing to learn? You're basing that assumption off of one season of football in the Championship when he clearly had the better of the league - He didn't NEED to changes his ideas because they dominated the league with them. He's barely scratching the surface of his potential as a coach, I don't think it's fair to write him off that quickly - all I said was that I don't want him to abandon his principles immediately like Poch did.
      As for Palmer, I think you are vastly understating how good he is as a 1v1 winger, and misunderstanding how he operated in Poch's two systems. Poch's 4-2-3-1 that we saw for the majority of the season had Palmer wide right, he wouldn't "cut inside", he'd rotate with the RCM (Usually Gallagher) and/or the RB - He can do a similar job here with whoever the RCM is if Palmer is acting as our RW. As for the 3-2-5 we used at the end of the season to massive success (which is very similar to how Maresca's 4-3-3 ends up as in possession) Palmer was operating in that RCM role - the only difference in the 4 in midfield is that James will be the inverted FB and not Cucurella, and Gallagher will be replaced by KDH.
      From there the personnel will change depending on who we are facing/how defensive we need to be - The "Caicedo" role could be between him and Lavia if we need to be more defensive, or Enzo if we want to be more creative. If We want both of these two in the side with Caicedo as a right sided 8, then Palmer won't be compromised in any set-up this team has, Madueke will. He'd drop out of the side to accommodate Palmer. If not, then one of the CMs will. It all just depends on how offensive/defensive we want to be.
      In my mind, if Enzo is to keep his system with no adjustments, our team would set-up like this:
      GK
      RCB Tosin LB
      James Enzo
      Palmer Caicedo KDH LW
      Jackson
      Or if we want to be more attacking:
      GK
      RCB Tosin LB
      James Enzo/Caicedo
      Madueke Palmer KDH LW
      Jackson
      Don't forget we are in MANY competitions this season and that midfield in particular will be rotating like crazy with the busy schedule. I reckon we'll see many variants of the same system, that all operate slightly differently based on who is in the midfield 4.

    How is being inflexible and stubborn with a system a good thing?
    Especially considering that championship teams figured out Enzo's style and successfully stopped him from playing shi style.

    • @monocfc
      @monocfc  Місяць тому

      When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. You don't immediately give up because of a small slip up when the system has been working for 20+ weeks.
      Teams in the championship didn't "figure Enzo's style out", it was moreso down to Pereira getting injured, them losing Casadei and not replacing him, and generally the team becoming a bit more Lax as they were so far ahead.
      Yes the form dropped in the latter stages of the league but they still won the majority of their matches during that time, and you have to realise that without Enzo's stubbornness and drive to play that one system, they wouldn't have had that massive lead in the first place.
