About Us
Kate and Curtis both learn how to sail when they were young. Kate was a junior sailor in Opti's and 420's while Curtis went cruising in the Great Lakes with his family. We met while sailing in a Melges 24 regatta and have been sailing together ever since. The first time we went cruising together as a couple was on a friends borrowed J Boats J 105 in the North Channel of Lake Huron and Canada (part of the Great Loop). Those few weeks, and watching other channels like Gone With the Wynns, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, Delos, Nahoa, and Sailing La Vagabonde, convinced us that the sailing life was for us.
We bought our boat, a J Boats J/46, in 2019 after spending years searching for the perfect bluewater sailboat to sail around the world. We were interested in a catamaran and monohulls, but loved the performance cruising design of the J(it is faster than most cruising catamarans). We spent six months refitting her in Rhode Island, before selling our house and cars, quitting our jobs, and leaving land life for good to become digital nomads, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn.
We have since navigated over 12,000 miles together, through storms, big waves, pandemics, and lockdowns. We sailed to Maine, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Grenada, Sint Maarten, the Azores, Canary Islands, and Brazil, on our way south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile to sail around Cape Horn and into the Patagonia fjords.
We never intended to become influencers or start a new UA-cam sailing channel, but now it is what we do. We love sharing our experience and adventures with you. We have learned to fly the drone and edit videos, trying to produce relaxing and listenable videos for you to sail away and watch at home while having coffee on Sunday mornings.
Kate, you are so adorable. I so enjoy you.
🤗
The smile on Roxy's face spoke a thousand words , She looked so happy to be going to sea. Happy for you that your heading south again. Stay safe. CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.
Hi Steve! Cheers! You are right on, Roxy has the best dog smile and loves going to sea. Check out this weeks, she goes on the bow again to check out a huge school of dolphins!
Perfect music for a birds eye view.
Yayyy!
Every day I look for your post.Glad you’re back
Thats awesome! We wish we could post even more, but the videos take forever to edit!
Safe sailing South !!! Impressive experience with Dolphins at night.
Definitely were wondering if we were imagining the sounds but it was super cool when we finally saw them 🐬
Loved the birds eye view, piano section. Must be really peaceful at sea ⛵ so cool you show us the spooky times too at night... Whale and dolphin sounds, boat traffic. Your alone way out there at sea 🌛✨🕯️
Hi R D!!! It does get spooky out there some times. Flying the drone around that little island at sunset was as peaceful as sailing on a pond though. We love those times!
So glad you are going around Cape Horn and you are not taking the "easy out" of the Panama canal. Looking forward to your rounding and getting tips for when we head that way as well. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Rudi! We surely can't fault those that choose the canal. The logistics, when all is said and done, are likely so much easier and less expensive, not to mention the weather!
There is something to be said for sailing in a bikini vs sailing in long johns and foulies.
Seems you have the same feelings as us though, a calling almost, to choose the harder path...good on 'ya!
We are happy to share for those in our wake, as others have done for us! Hope to see you on the water somewhere :-)
Cheers!!!
1:40 with the blade of the anchor just below the water surface, move the boat cautiously and the mud washes off.
If you have ever ridden horse at stables, you will have noticed the brushed to wipe the dirt of your boots. Two opposing to the sides, one at the bottom. A simple contraption of a couple brushes/bristles on a stick you already have might do the trick in wiping the dirt off the recently galvanised chain. If you have a bit of fresh water, I would rinse the salts off too - these eat into the metal layer..
One Concern, y'all in light winds are up on the fore deck swapping sails or moving lines outside the to get better winds without a life jacket. A slip, a fall, or unexpected swell could toss you out of the boat. There is no quick way to turn that boat around during a man overbroad rescue. Speaking from experience. Safe travels
Hi Richard, you are not wrong. We appreciate the concern.
Молодцы какие,попутного Вам ветра!
Спасибо! Ваше здоровье!
Love the mixture of great footage and various knowledgeable explanations for all sorts of things on board. The night time doplphin + ? encounter is unsettling.
Definitely unsettling! Thanks for the kind words as well B! Cheers 😊
Great video again. Curtis as far as I am concerned you all cannot talk and explain to much. It's why I watch. To soak up as much about sailing as I can. IMHO it is what sets you all so far apart from all the others. Yall keep having fun and stay safe.
Thanks so much! When editing Curtis always says he is talking too much and to cut those sections shorter :-) Haha!!!!
Happy to see you all continuing down south and Tierra Del Fuego ! Looking forward to your posts ! Suerte !
Cheers @JanHB Hugo!!!!
12:40 this place is probably Ilha da Queimada Grande, considered one of the most dangerous places in the world and also known as "Ilha das Cobra" (snake island) because it had the highest concentration of snakes in the world, approximately 15,400. It is a military area, has only one Maritime Lighthouse and is the responsibility of the Brazilian Navy. Love this channel, great content.
We heard about the snake island!!! No way we were going to go on it! Sounds like something from an Indiana Jones movie :-) Glad you are enjoying the channel Claudio! Cheers!
Curtis and Kate,
Nice sale and video. Thank y'all for sharing.
Cheers!
Blue Skies, Fair Winds, and Following Seas.
Faithfully,
James
Hi James! Thanks so much & wishing the same to you!!!
Love the drone footage and the music. Of course, Roxy likes the dolphins too
Good job be safe 🤙🤙
Thank you Jimmy!
The good news: the Rocna grips nicely in clay.
The bad news: clay really grips the Rocna :-)
Some lovely "light airs" drone footage
Have either of you ever sailed an unstayed design? I remember Freedom was making them back in the late '70s, and a few others have produced a few models with carbon fiber masts. It certainly would make handling a big Genoa easier!
Haha. Hey Kevin!!! The Rocna was easier to get out than a Fortress, so we can give it a win there, still took us a bit. A local even came over with a powerboat that day and asked if we needed a hand :-)
Never sailed an unstayed rig, but looked at the Freedom's when boat shopping. There was a great deal on one in Michigan if we recall. Raced against a Nunsuch once, it didn't stand a chance upwind. Have a feeling the Freedom would do OK with a jib? They look like a good balance in design. Are you thinking of one? Would love to hear your thoughts! Would surely save a lot of money in standing rigging. Oh...and then there is thr AeroRig...never sailed one of those either, but cool concept!
Racing rules tend to drive most designs, so it is cool to see designs outside that box!
I’ve never sailed an unstayed rig either - it seems as if some degree of flex is inevitable and, coupled with the lack of backstay, that would make sail trim difficult to fine tune? I have to think that there’s less power per square foot, but I don’t know if there’s any research to back that up …
Thanks for listing sponsors. It was so cool to see my name. You guys are awesome. Roxy is a sport too! We are staring down a hurricane here in the Gulf of Mexico. Gotta decide within 48 what we'll do with my 36 Allied Princess. I live aboard. See y'all next week. Stay safe!
@@cqb1vet yes indeed
So glad to have you on board Valerie, it means a lot to us!!!! Be safe back in the States, if we can help in any way let us know! Hopefully you are in a well protectected spot!!!!! Keep us updated!!!
Good plan!!!!! Stay safe!!!!
@@SailingSweetRuca still prepping. We're in Panama City FL. It's Ian that may have us in the crosshairs. We did Michael 4 years ago. Cat 5. Definitely want nothing to do with one that strong again! It was like Armageddon. You guys stay safe. The Horn is gonna be gail force the while way!
@@valeriebird472 Best of luck to you. Live in Pinellas County (on land, have shutters and a generator but Irma was still rough: 5 days without power.)
Молодцы какие
Спасибо!
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice, easy going episode guys ‼️ 👍 ✌️ Bummer on what you have to tell us in what looked like a rotating mast issue. I pray and believe all will be OK. ✨🌊💨⛵️🏝👙🌞✨
Thanks!!!!
So many dolphins!!!! 🐬
Yayyy :-)
😊 more great adventures ahead for sure ⛵️
For sure!!!! Thanks Randy! :-)
I'd get as far west in the gulf as you can. Be safe 🎉
Right on!!!! :-)
Did I miss what was up when you hit something? I will need to go back and see if I missed an episode. Love your channel ♥️ you guys rock
Ah I should have watched first haha. Be safe ♥️
All good! Cheers Robert!
Awesome vid! didn't like the sound of that last comment tho! oh no!
Definitely a rough day on the water but still lots to be grateful for.. mainly our strong boat!
Any day with dolphins is a good day.
For sure!!!!
Great content ! Do you ever get concerned about pirates/thieves on the open water ?
Hi Don! Thank you. Yes, there is some concern and we stay on top of worldwide reports of this nature.
👍
👍
Alcatrazes Archipelago is a natural reserve. It's known as the Brazilian Galapagos, with a population of over 10 thousand birds and 20 unique species of flora and fauna. It's protected by law and the Brazilian Navy therefore forbids tourists in it. Only researchers allowed.
Alcatraz is a word from arab meaning "the diver". Its the common name of a common bird in the island. I guess the island in San Francisco has the same name because San Francisco is of Spanish origin (and Spanish and Portuguese have some arab influences from the time of the Moors)
Such cool facts that we did not know! Thank you for this! So beautiful to sail there.
15:00 - "talking dolphins" may just be trying to talk to your echo depth sounder
What do you do to battle sea sickness?
We have found cinnarizine 15mg tablets work well. It is also under the brand name Sturgeron. It is not available in the USA but it is widely available OtC elsewhere.
We wish you all the best, sailing south, taking on the greatest demon in the sailing world. Are you going to double the horn or go through the Straits?
Heya Rauf! Cheers! We aren't going to double the horn in the traditional 50 to 50 way. No sense in going all that way and not stopping into Yacht Club Micalvi for a beer! Doubling also means missing the spectacular Beagle Channel, which we want to sail through as well.
😀👍👍❤
Heya Thomas!!! CHEERS!!!
What happened with that race? You won?
As for anchor cleaning, hoik it up to well above water level. With the winch handle release the clutch on top of the drum so the anchor drops straight in the water from 2m high. Anchor cleaned!
Yes, we won, of course ;-) Good tip for anchor cleaning. We tend to be "draggers" when cleaning the anchor, motoring slowly until the mud dissapears before finally hoisting.
Congrats on the 20K subscribers, think correctly trimmed sails film better.
Thabks so much Bob! We would be inlined to agree with you :-)

Is that 4th July or 7th April?
American style dating on our Expedition Strip Chart. You have a good eye for detail, impressed you are watching so closely! ;-)
@@SailingSweetRuca I specifically looked for it as I wanted to know when it was filmed so what weather you would have when going south. When the video started showing digital maps I knew there would be dates somewhere.
I suppose you will be arriving at Ushuaia (1000km north of Antarctica Peninsula) sometime in mid or later April... Mid autumn
You might enjoy this movie on UA-cam: he Last Cape Horners; The End of the Great Sailing Ship Era. FULL PROGRAM 70 minutes.
Hi Rauf! Thanks for recommending it, we just watched the whole movie last night. Excellent!!!!!
Be honest, I recommend stopping in the falkland islands or iles maloines and avoiding Argentina. Serious problems of all kinds.
Hi Norberto, we appreciate your help and advise. We won't rule out Argentina quite yet, as we have met some good people from there, so we will see what happens. It is still undecided.
If you like this channel, check out Sailing la Vegabond (1.7M+ subs) and Sailing Uma.
For sure! That is quite the compliment ;-) We watched both of those channels before we left on our own journey.
@@SailingSweetRuca Stay safe and well to you and yours, from somewhere near Seattle.
⚘ 🙏❤🙏 ⚘
She makes sandwiches 👍🤣😉
Yes! Love the screen name btw!
Sail not sale..
One has to make sales to buy sails ;-)
