    This is a refreshingly fair review. So often reviews of Vauxhall / Opel are automatically negative without merit. The Golf is a more premium vehicle but you are paying quite a lot more and have less standard equipment.

    • @wassupbro
      @wassupbro 5 років тому +8

      I understand that the VW Golf is a Big seller in Europe, but premium?Maybe the Golf sold in Europe is quite different from the Golf available in America, because in the USA the compact from VW is selling poorly because of bad reputation of being unreliable. Maybe it's because VW cheated in government emission tests.

    • @inohaasbroek9930
      @inohaasbroek9930 5 років тому

      @@wassupbro More premium, not necessarily in the 'real' premium category. It's considered to be a bit more upmarket because the used materials and agility are on a higher level but as Mike said, it does come at a higher price.

      @@inohaasbroek9930 Golf is very much a myth...
      A serious comparison does not find that Golf is is as lavish and precious as everyone is convinced that it is.
      The appearance, the look and the design of Golf is uninteresting and boxy.
      The Astra body is more advanced, parts of the body consists of up to three layers of sheet metal and four different steel grades.
      Which makes up almost the entire body, where as, on the other hand Golf consists only of extra strong steel on limited surfaces / areas and selected points and no strong steel behind the rear seat at all.
      Astra has a number of 6 more steel beams in the C-pillar, luggage compartment and the rear of the body than Golf has and they are all bound together in a strong unity, while Golf only has a beam in the c-pillar over the upper half of top of the luggagge hatch which extends over the ceiling, that is not attached to any strong structure other than the thin sheet.
      The outer plate of the Astra consists of mild steel because this is easier to rust proof with high quality all High-Strength ultra high strength and Press-Hardened Steels is located inside of this plate for reasons of rust protection.
      The Astra has lower air resistance
      Matrix headlamp more advanced than Golf Dynamic light assist and at lower cost.
      Astra's doors have a more refined mechanism that makes them close themselves, while Golf's doors are much more sluggish and requires more violence to close.
      Electro-hydraulic braking system: ”e-Boost” 3 times faster than the current brake system in Golf.
      Significantly more spacious (with the exception of luggage) with a possible higher seating position if desired, due to a much better ceiling height.
      More spacious rear seat.
      Much better handle for the mechanical longitudinal adjustment of the front seats.
      Cladded interior door window frames,
      where Golf has naked painted metal.
      Astra has bigger, softer, more ergonomic buttons for electric windows placed in panels of plastic or artificial leather, while instead Golf:s are small, hard and have a sharp ridge on the underside that cuts into the finger and is placed directly in armrest dressed in fabric and are surrounded by fabric which collects dirt and bacteria.
      An area where you often bring your fingers shall not be in fabric.
      The Golf Button for adjusting the exterior rear view mirrors is less logical and intuitive in how it works and looks very cheap to look at.
      Both Astra from 2010 and the current has superior controls for this feature.
      The buttons surrounding the Golf gear lever are very simple and cheap.
      At least Astras looks like buttons, not ”imitated” ”painted” buttons on a flat piece of plastic.
      Astra has real mechanical locking buttons in the doors - which means higher security in case of errors in electronics and electrical systems.
      Astra has illuminated mirrors with double lamps placed in the sun visor instead of Golf's lone lamp in the ceiling, a cheaper solution since no electricity needs to be installed in the sun visor.
      The Golf standard model's climate controls without acc, with three knobs, have worse setting options who do not have the same opportunity of fine tuning and detail control that Astra has.
      The Golf:s basic models, roof panel with the buttons for the interior lighting are also very cheap and poorly functioning.

    Ordered GS Line 1.5d 122hp manual. I doubt if they have the new nice panel but nonetheless there is the firmer suspension, the AGR seats and the 17 inch alloys! And of course MANUAL HANDBRAKE! Also, this is the only really brand new 1.5/1.6 diesel engine in the market for about 5 years, so I believe it's going to be excellent. Hopefuly, reliable to!

    I’ve got the pre face lift Holden Astra 1.6. 0-100km/h: 6.4 sec. Fuel consumption in the city is 8.2 l/100 km, which is fantastic. Too bad they don’t have the 1.6 engine in Europe anymore.

      @vkgiotis 4 роки тому +1

      @Redblade 8.2 L/100km in the city for a car that produces 200hp (or 147 kW) is not bad consumption. However, they still use the 1.6 petrol in the Insignia. I think that they got rid of it because the did not market it well. People did not see the benefit. However it's worth driving the 1.6 yourself to see what I'm talking about. Thx.

Have read about cause i would actually concider buying one. . . But reading about it it doesn't score very high on reliability, and that kills it for me. I can forgive small fault and defects but engine problems need to be fixed before I short list it.

    Sehr guter Fahrbericht, der mir bei meiner Entscheidung sehr geholfen hat ! 👌
    Ich bin vom Astra-J auf den K FL gewechselt und habe mich von der ersten Sekunde rund um wohl gefühlt. Einzige Mankos sind die fehlenden BC Anzeigen über den Kühlmittel-, Wischwasser- und Motorölstand. Alles muss manuell gecheckt werden, was für mich ein Rückschritt ist, da der Astra-J dies konnte. Über die ungedämpften Staufächer kann man noch hinwegsehen.
    Das CVT ist ein Traum, auch wenn man sich tatsächlich an die Drehzahlen beim Beschleunigen gewöhnen muss. Ist anders, als bei einer Wandlerautomatik.
    Sehr überrascht hat mich der 3-Zylinder. Auch wenn er im kalten Zustand ganz leicht wie ein Diesel klingt, so hört er sich überraschend gut an und an Durchzug fehlt es ihm, im Vergleich zu meinem alten Astra-J mit 140PS und Wandlerautomatik, nicht. Allerdings glättet er keine Gesichtsfalten, wenn man das Gaspedal mal durchdrückt, aber das sollte jedem klar sein.

    Autogefuhl why are you not mentioning that the door window frames are covered with plastic instead of being exposed metal as EVERY other car in this class ?? This is something that should be pointed and Opel should be greeted for that because it is a nice detail that is only reseved for premium brands - and even much more expensive cars such as VW Tiguan, VW Passat, Shkoda Kodiaq, Shkoda Superb, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Nissan X-tral, Toyota Rav 4 etc, etc has exposed metal doors which look especially ugly when your car has a bright color. Plastic covered door frames are not only nicer to look but improve sound insulation as well which is very important.

      @pavlins123 5 років тому +1

      @@autogefuehl no, I'm absolutely not saying this. I think that you probably have not noted this detail but you should. Because especially when the car has a bright paint it is ugly. I have a white metallic 2018 Seat Leon and the ugly door frames are driving me crazy. That's the single most hated part of the car for me. And the front part of the window frame is in the driver's field of vision when driving unlike almost anything else in the car, so I get to see the exposed metal doors almost constantly. This has got to the point that I'm not getting a car with exposed metal window frames no matter what.

    Hey Thomas. Really superb review, thank you for that.
    I admit Ive had my concerns when I read that the FL of the Astra only had 3 Cylinders and was kinda irritated that only the diesel engine got the new 9-speed conventional automatic. You only hear bad things about CVT gearboxes, you know, the infamous "rubber band effect". But your Review taught me better, thank you for that.

    In my opinion, the Astra has always been a decent and honest alternative in the compact segment. Not so nicely processed as the Golf, A3 & Co, but ( my personal opinion, too, based on the long terms reviews ) far more reliable than the latter. Maybe times has changed and Astra became the real people's car, instead of the Golf. It may not have the plushest materials in the class, but the attention to detail is present: the car is aerodynamic, the front seats are exemplary, the engines are economical, just like the Kadetts of the 80's. A small suggestion: let's change the name back to "Kadett" for the next generation to come!!!

PSA mentioned several times that they won't pay penalties to the EU in 2021. So I think they don't have a choice atm. Unlike Volkswagen (personal opinion), PSA can not afford to pay high penalties and they dont have enough EVs/hybrids for compensation. So they chose only engines that saves as much CO2 as possible.

    Good to hear that CVTs are getting better. Theoretically it is the most optimal way to transfer power from the engine to the wheels, but the ones I encountered were horrifying to drive. We have an Avensis 1.8 147 with a CVT in the family and the noise it makes when you accelerate is unbearable, let alone the awful fuel consumption. I will miss big Diesel engines though, because you can put a turbo on a small petrol, but you won’t replicate the feeling of acceleration a two or three litre turbocharged diesel with a lot of torque provides (like the 2.0 163 form the Astra J era)
