Leyland National Mk1 JMY120N - The Super National (Includes cold start, on board footage & drive by)

  • A short video of my own Leyland National Mk1, JMY120N, otherwise known as the Super National. We see the bus being started from cold, followed by internal and external footage of the bus being driven by myself around North Lincolnshire.
The Super National was a one-off version of the Leyland National single deck bus, intended as a kind of mobile boardroom on wheels. It had many features now considered standard on modern corporate coaches, including a colour TV, video player, radio telephone, secretary's desk, servery, fridge, aircraft style seats with selectable audio, toilet compartment and wardrobe. It was first operated by National Travel (South East) out of their depot in Catford in South London, and was used on special private hires. Over the years it had several famous passengers, including Dolly Parton and Fleetwood Mac. It was also used by the BBC in connection with their Seaside Special entertainment programme, and featured in the opening credits to the programme in 1976.
Mechanically, Super National was fitted with the infamous Leyland 0.510 8.2 litre fixed head turbodiesel engine, which developed around 200bhp at 2400rpm. Unusually, this was coupled to a 2-speed ZF fully automatic torque converter transmission, and high speed differential, giving it a maximum speed of (according to the original driver) well over 70mph.
National Travel operated the bus as a working PSV until January 1980, at which point it was sold to a company called SATRA Ltd (Soviet American Trade Association). This was a company linked to the Russian government, and were involved in the import of Lada cars to the UK. As far as I can tell, SATRA used the bus to transport dignitaries to events around the country. They painted it in a distinctive red and silver livery, but kept the original interior.
In the mid 1980's, the bus appears to have ben sold to a Hull based car dealer, although for what purpose it was used for there is unclear. It's next significant move was around 1986, when it was sold to Pirelli Tyres in Derbyshire, where it was used as a mobile training unit. Pirelli had the interior refurbished and altered slightly, the most significant change they made was to replace the aircraft style front seats with an inwards facing sofa style seat. They also made some mechanical alterations, with the 2-speed ZF transmission being replaced with the more usual Leyland Pnemocyclic 5-speed semi automatic unit. Sadly, it also had the high speed diff replaced too, giving it a reduced maximum speed of around 50mph.
Pirelli kept the bus until the early 1990's, when it was then sold for preservation. It was kept at Wythall Transport Museum for many years, still in Pirelli's mainly yellow livery. It had several changes of ownership, and at some point along the way it was treated to a repaint into original National Travel livery, but this appears to have been more of a cosmetic makeover than a full restoration. After being kept in London for a while, it was sold to a church group in Burton on Trent, who intended to use the bus for storing and distributing clothes for the homeless. By their own admission, it was far too big for their needs. During this time, it was kept on a private driveway , which must have pleased the neighbours no end.
I acquired the bus in May 2018 after it had been put up for sale on Ebay. I passed my test in a Mk1 National, and I have a fascination with oddball vehicles, so it seemed to be the perfect bus for me. Although the interior is not original, it is still completely unique. Upon close inspection, the bus was in remarkable condition structurally, but had a very tired looking exterior. Since acquisition, I have carried out a full external restoration, with all external panels from the roof downwards being removed and replaced or repaired as necessary. The interior is still unrestored, and is still in the, now very tatty, 1980's refurbished condition. I do intend to reinstate as much of the original style interior as possible, however this could be difficult given the number of missing items that appear to have been unique to the bus.
So for now, I have got the bus road legal again, and I intend to take it to several events during 2022. You can follow further restoration progress by visiting my Facebook page, a link to which is below:

I remember those Leyland Mk1 busses like it was yesterday - I traveled to and from work on them. Time passes by so quickly. Whenever I see them, either in picture, on film, or in the flesh, it almost feels like they are, or should be in daily service.

This one never actually ran as a normal service bus due to the very non standard and unique interior. Instead it was used mainly on corporate private hires. They're still a modern looking bus, despite the newest one built being 36 years old!

Great memories I these. I live in the east of England and “Eastern Counties” Buses we’re our main operating group back in the 70s and 80s. I was lucky and got to drive some buses with a local company but it wasn’t for very long as I got a job working on the railways. Also I never drove one of these instead Bristol VR double deckers. I’ve let my PSV licence go a long while ago and certainly wouldn’t take it up now in my late 50s, but it’s lovely seen MH a bit of history on our roads. Nice sounds too!

A trip down memory lane for me. I was a fitter employed at 2 local bus companies when the Mk 1 Nationals were on the run, they were always a bit skittish and could slide if you weren't careful when you were driving them. Best of all though, on a cold day, they were so much warmer inside than the other buses, mostly Bristols. Thanks for uploading.

The mk1 series 1s (with the longer roof pod) were fun on a wet or icy road because of a lack of front weight. Also if the brake balancing system wasn't properly adjusted it could lead to hairy moments. The Mk1 series 2 (with the shorter roof pod) had better weight distribution by moving weight, such as the batteries to the front of the vehicle. They were generally better with a few passengers on.

I find I have more involvement in the preserved buses when I'm not driving them for a living as well. I spend a fair bit of my spare time on this bus, plus the associated costs involved. It's nearly an hours drive to get to it from where I live, safe undercover storage can take priority over distance with buses, as they can deteriorate very quickly if parked outside for lengthy periods.

In 1974 I was a fresh-faced new driver at National Travel, Catford (formally Timpsons) and remember being very excited to look around our new executive “coach”, JMY120N. We did indeed have a number of contracts for musical bands transport requirement. One of our driver did some work for the Rolling Stones, transporting their equipment, and he got on so well with them that he accompanied them on a United States tour - as a guest, not as a driver. It has been joyous to see that the bus is still rolling and now being looked after very well. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Your not the first ex National Travel driver to have picked up on this video, there's another comment a while ago from a guy called Rodney (I can't remember his last name). I've also previously met Windy Gale, former regular driver of the Super National , and Cyril Knighton, who was the sales manager I think. I even found one of Cyrils old business cards stuck behind the steering column when I had it apart for refurbishment.
I've still a lot to do to return the Super National to as it was built, as its been altered a fair bit inside. But the exterior I have tried to get as close as I can to as delivered 1975 condition, it's taken over 4 years and counting!

Then this bus starred up filled the enclosed bus station with smoke and the noise when she pulled away echoed everywhere. Even with a hangover I have to admit it I thought it was a bit of a looker. The exhaust is very boomy. Nascar racing cars have similar styled exhausts that were known as "Boom Tubes". You have to let a 510 idle for a minute or so before revving it, as you should for any turbo diesel, as it allows oil to circulate around the turbo.

Yes, Windy Gale was involved with my training. I walked in off the street when I was 18 and said I wanted to be a coach driver. They said “how old are you”? “18”, I replied. “Come back when you’re 21”. And I did. As soon as I had my provisional I returned and a couple of hours later I was out for an assessment drive. And the rest, as they say, is history.
By the way, the driver who “toured” with the Stones was a Jimmy Hemblade.

But the earlier electric change selectors mounted on the column were always on the left, as were the vast majority of the direct air change type.
