    The midterms are two weeks out and chaos just keeps building. The UK is cycling through Prime Ministers faster than they’ve cycled through James Bonds and their economic crisis continues. In the U.S., election deniers are whipping themselves into a frenzy ahead of the midterms. Jon is joined by British journalist Gabriel Gatehouse to run down what’s happening in the UK and what his reporting on QAnon and election conspiracy theories might tell us about the fate of our democracy in the post-election period - if we ever even get to a place where the election is over. Writers Tocarra Mallard and Robby Slowik are also here talking Ye, Adidas, and antisemitism. Listen to the full episode on Apple Podcasts now!

      And, it was never a claim that was believed by Trump...not once, ever. He floated it before the 2016 Election saying he'd only accept the results if he won. And in July 2020, he had already formulated denialism as his strategy long before a single vote had even been cast...(see Steve Bannon's audio). I love that line...that horse will never have to experience a retrofit bowel movement.

In fact, looking at statements from alt right shitheads and age of consent/abortion laws across the country, the Republican opinion seems to be okay with harm to kids, as long as it makes babies and furthers their power, ignorance, and hate.

    • @pauldorasil5114
      @pauldorasil5114 Рік тому +3

      Fortunately, food insecurity statistics are misleading. They don't mean what people think they mean. Food insecurity just means that, on a survey, you say that you want more food than you have. 10% of households in the US are identified as food insecure. The median BMI of food insecure households is not statistically different from other households. And, on a longitudinal basis, food insecure households actually have a higher BMI. 10% of US households are not starving.
      None of this is to downplay the real tragedy of when children starve - which should never happen. In the US, a little over 100,000 children are wasted, meaning that they are significantly underweight as a consequence of food shortage. Those kids are starving. But that's under half of a percent of the children in the US. It's nowhere near 10%. So, "food security" statistics are misleading and they are used to drastically overstate the problem. The much larger health concern is obesity, which affects 14.7 million children in the US.

    • @ballman2010
      @ballman2010 Рік тому +6

      I do take issue with relying solely on median BMI as a measure of food insecurity. It's not just the calorie count, but the nutritional content of those calories that matters. I don't even think this is a controversial point.

    • @pauldorasil5114
      @pauldorasil5114 Рік тому +1

      @@ballman2010 Absolutely. BMI is a terrible measure of health. But it's a great measure of starvation. People with high BMI aren't starving. They might be eating the wrong foods. They might need to eat more rice and beans and fewer processes foods. But that's a different problem from people starving because they don't have access to food.
      The children in the US who are wasted are victims of parental neglect. It's not an issue of their parents not having access to food. It's important to understand the problem because it changes how we address it and which solutions will be effective.
      A lot of free school lunches, for example, are a driver of obesity. It's not okay to feed kids fried meat and mashed potatoes every day. That doesn't mean we get rid of free lunch programs. But we have to replace those with healthy options and not just the foods from industries that lobby the USDA.

    Jon, I agree it is isolating and as a kid growing up in a middle class christian neighborhood, the very first thing that made me feel isolated was when I entered kindergarten and the teacher asked each kid to stand up and introduce themselves to the other classmates by giving their name, and birthdate and what nation their ancestors came from. Diane, Hi I am Diane and I'm Italian cause my ancestors come from Italy. Then Jimmy stood up and said my ancestors come from Ireland and I am Irish. And then there was Gerard and he says hi, my family comes from Norway and I am Norwegian. Then it's my turn and I stood up and said, hi, I am Robin and my family come from Russia and Poland. And I am American. One of the tough kids, Buster, was very bold and said to me, but I thought you were Jewish. And I felt like crawling into a hole to die since the ignorance and acceptance about Jews was never mentioned until it was. And I fought all of my school days to be in with the cool kids, like straight blonde hair, and homecoming stuff, but somehow that just didn't make the grade because I came home one day from school and "Kike" was written on a window of my house and I got frightened. I internalized that fright growing up suffering depression, and observing my bipolar mom going in and out of the hospital for years getting shock treatments. And when my first ever redheaded Catholic guitar playing, surfing, boyfriend broke up with me, it was for a younger, cute little Irish Catholic girt who was a cheerleader and a gymnast. And I didn't know why then, but over the years, I realized that I was always gonna feel different especially during the holidays when I would have to explain to everyone how I didn't celebrate Christmas.

For if " money is free speech", then vast money is the equivalent of screaming so loud, it drowns out the little guy..... why would politicians bother with concerns or 'Joe', if all their wealth / Power comes from the companies with the resources of a medium sized country?

      The only issue would be the other party to the conversation would need to be rational and agree on basic facts!! You can't even start to have a discussion most of the conspiracy theorists because their perception of facts, as it's been told to them for many years now, are in fact false. They have probably been walled off in this right wing information silo for years now! It's literally been proven scientifically that those that tend to lean to right wing are as a whole less open to changing their minds when presented with new facts. Right wingers are literally less open minded than people who lean left. They need cult deprograming at this point, which is sad! Everyday people are not equipped for dealing with those sucked into cults. We do the best we can, but it hasn't been enough thus far!

      @@rashellysirendragon16 I couldn't agree more. Authoritarianism is one of the deepest core "virtues" of the right in terms of how they're able to get so many people on board with their bullshit out of blind, unquestioned obedience. There's a lot more it would take for things to be fixed in our current sociopolitical climate for sure, but I would also venture to say that a lot of mainstream media outlets consumed and created by the left aren't doing nearly enough either, which has been a major longstanding problem, too Not that they're nearly as bad as the coverage on the right in any remote sense, because nothing can beat the level of disinformation and propaganda that does substantial harm to our society like they do... But case in point, the coverage of the PACT Act as Jon's talked about in other episodes. Or the neoliberal-at-best coverage that doesn't do nearly enough to counter the disinformation from the other side, while at the same time trying to not seem too "partial" when right-wing media is anything but, and yet somehow also stirring up infighting on occasion in ways that are really menial and waste our time and energy. Or ignoring certain issues for the wrong reasons when that silence is then used against those on the left anyway. But I absolutely agree. Nothing is gonna be enough unless some major shift somehow miraculously could happen with a whole portion of the country that is unwilling to think critically about the people in power they're so willing to support on blind faith alone, among other issues that keep people tied to right-wing political ideologies (Christian nationalism, individualism, varying forms of systemic oppression, etc.)

The vast majority of media is controlled by the very few ultra wealthy to push their agenda, using any means necessary. I feel like authoritarian fascist regiemes have mainly controlled the masses with fear. Pushing the idea that if someone else is given something that it must be taken from you. I am befuddled by the mental gymnastics that right wingers must perform on a daily basis just to keep that fragile facade of their wrapped reality maintained in the face of so much overwhelming evidence to the contrary!! I appreciate the input on allies, but it leads me to questions that may be particular to me or some in my circumstances.
    I am working class, living paycheck to paycheck. I have NO physical friends anymore just acquaintances, and the people I have in social circles online are now concentrated to those that still fit in the bubble that the algorithms have put us into. I try to bust out but those in other bubbles won't talk to me in presumed fear of my otherness.
    As someone who suffers from major depressive disorder because all I do is survive, work, pay bills, eat, sleep, repeat, it's difficult. Hell, my wife and I have not even been on a real vacation in over 15 years, the only breaks we get are when relatives die or the occasional holiday, and at 56 it gets harder every day. Added to the macro problems, that all have solutions, people fight about all the time, and it's a wonder I have not ended it all, my wife and son are pretty much all that keeps me going.
    So when I cannot express my anger in public at the atrocities of a cop gunning down a child at a playground, and the many other atrocities that are too numerous to list committed against people of color. The helplessness I feel fuels my anger even more. I don't have the spare income to donate, I don't have the spare time to march, I show up when I can in my town square, but it's never enough.
    So yes, I posted a black square, but please tell me what else someone like myself who is at the bottom and feels like they are sinking can do to make any kind of difference. I vote, I try to learn more than soundbites from candidates. But I am at a loss, and hearing that what little I feel I can do to show that I support my fellow humans makes them feel somehow less... is discouraging.
    I hope you understand that this is not meant to devalue the feelings these events created in any of us, just expressing mine and the general helplessness at the bottom.

      This is just my opinion. But there IS something you can do, and it's the only real thing that matters: and that is, simply, treat everyone in your life the best you can. That's all you really need to do. Maybe you're already doing it, and if so, then you have nothing to feel bad about.
      The problem isn't so much the hashtags (although they can be inadvertently othering,) the problem is the hypocrisy that hides behind them. Too many people on all sides of the equation are filled with hate for some group or another. That's the thing that's poisoning us, as a human race. And when it comes down to it, you CANNOT heal another person's hate. That's why the only thing you can do, and the most important thing, is to look within yourself and try to address the hate in your own heart. That's the only thing that matters.

      I find the marginalized groups tend to be stronger because they deal with so much more on the day to day, and that the dominant groups are weak because of their privilege. This privilege is then reinforced by that group because of fear that their behavior will be directed back to them.
      But yes, we need to stand together to quell the fears of those who would wish to dominate and show them that inclusivity leads to a stronger and more stable world/life/community.

    This grooming rhetoric has gotten way out of hand! The other night I was at a party, having a casual conversation with a seemingly chill guy I'd met. He was a long-haired stoner guy with tattoos whom I'd just played video games with; and, totally out of the blue, he asked me if I thought it was ok for people like me to be grooming elementary school kids.
    I was fucking shocked and appalled. If your average, apolitical, apathetic folks out there are beginning to de facto accept this groomer narrative, innocent people are going to be hurt. And for the record, what happened to all of the Catholic Priests who diddled kids? Why are Matt Gaetz's child sex trafficking charges being swept under the rug? Who's on Maxwell's fucking list?

    Scary episode. I do think I agree with Gabriel a little on the laptop issue, but i also understand why after the Hillary's email debacle, then the Mueller Report madness, why the media would be hesitant to jump into another hysteria like that. And there was definitely one mainstream media (Fox) that had no problem covering it every night.

      Agreed. I'm also disappointed that they didn't mention a few things.
      - The "10% for the Big Guy" email was sent by an investor to Hunter Biden and suggested that Hunter could hold that 10% "...for the Big Guy" but there is no mention of this type of deal sent from Hunter back to the investor and ultimately they didn't move forward with the project.
      - Steve Bannon would not share the contents of Hunter Biden's laptop with main stream news media so they could not independently verify the story. Others in his orbit eventually leaked copies of the hard-drive, but when the story first came out you had Giuliani and Bannon (some of the least trustworthy humans on the planet) claiming to have information that could easily be forged. I don't see how main stream medial could have done anything under those circumstances.

      No mention of how vulnerable we are to nuclear war ..
      No mention to reports came out showing we have less than 60years of soil left because of big food industries practices of using chemicals to kill off life and dirty our air and water as waste water through ill efficiency practices which can be easily solved if we moved to using regenerate agriculture.
      No mention of how our food has no nutritional value is why we are getting sick because of these farming practices of a controlled central power that has killed soil & ships things from so far that they are dead on arrival & just empty calories & sugars ..
      No mention how in Canada they have been caught forcing those losing their house or ended up in the mad house to be euthanized against their will. .

      These last two years we seen records broken for the 99% seeing all their wealth get funneled right up to the 1% in both the marketplaces and in taxes bail outs to the rich.
      They are purposefully aiming to make you desperate and poor so to rob you of the last of the human rights you had as a first world country. In Europe and the United States. The people of the 1st world was the only competition of owning all world resources the 1% of the 1% faced. Problem with that is the other side feels the exact same way. Keep pointing out similarities between their actions now and the genocidal nationalism their beliefs were founded upon. Yes. _Founded._ The Bible was their excuse all throughout, but _America_ as a concept is the crystallization of the world they really want. Look at the Salem Witch Trials. The similarities Evangelicals have with the Taliban. If you put them on the spot with these analogies, they either stammer, or are such religious fanatics they will attempt to justify such beliefs.
      The biggest con in history has been convincing people that everything that goes against them is unjust persecution, while every win comes with God's blessing. They can't fathom that their takes might be shitty or harmful to other humans, leading to lower popularity. No, instead, it's a test.
      Say a civil war _did_ break out. It would not go like it did the first time. Plus, this country's gotten too fat, lazy and comfortable. But smatterings of domestic terrorist bombings would straighten their shit right up, along with the realization that they need us for _their_ economy to function. And that's not even taking into account other nations waiting to pound us, especially after the horrid display we've put on for over two centuries.
      Make no mistake. America's very much a "bad guy," taken as a whole.

I don't want to be connected to those Europeans who tormented and killed people for centuries because of their religious beliefs and family. I kept waiting for the guest to say, "see how easy it was for me to lie? None of what I just said is true and it's why I left the BBC" after all his mortgage had just doubled, and one couldn't lie on BBC but telling the truth doesn't pay a fraction of what lying pays. the laptop Jon? REEEALLY? IF this guest had seen those things on a laptop... There is no Hunter Biden laptop. Rudy juliani paid 5 million dollars for this, he had paper print outs of contents... the FBI looked at what was presented and they said it was rubbish. and now they're are four hard drives that Rudy Giuliani claims he had and don't forget about the psychiatrist that allegedly had the laptop at one point. For gawd sake Jon.... REALLY?! ALSO, Hunter Biden was not yet with burisma (or as Dumpy called it bariceema) when this alleged China deal went down. this is disgusting I'm very disappointed. if we have lost Jon's reason... it's all hopeless
