I have seen far to many stripped oil plugs because of inexperience making many of these workers trying to cranked them down with all there might. I change my own oil because of this plus I have control over the quality of the products I use.
Exactly, and not to mention overtightening the oil filter if they even change it when is difficult to get to, over filling or under filling the oil level, not using the correct viscosity, forgetting to put the fill cap back on and charging for full synthetic when they use cheap conventional bulk oil.
i do my own oil changes because i like to know what i,m putting in my engine - i,m 84 and still do my changes also my grandsons --not a problem ---your right --the most important thing is to make sure you pay attention to your dip-stick.
I've been changing my oil nearly 50 years. In college I worked at a SOHIO (Standard in Ohio) Station and learned there. I still do it because I like to do it. Now to be honest at 68 years old it is getting a little harder to get under the car but still do it. Oh yea it also saves money and I know it's done right...
Exactly, and it's the reason I do my own, irrespective of cost differences one way or the other. I know it's actually done right and with a good quality oil and filter
If you care about your car and know how to change the oil, should NEVER EVER have the oil changed by the express oil shops, there are couple of reasons which I will go thru: 1. The quality of oil and filter : in order to have a low price they will need to use the lowest quality that can get by, picture cheap crappy gas and you'll understand. 2 They make a profit thru volume: which means in-and-out as fast possible, which means that they will not waste time draining all the oil, which means you will have "left over" oil, which will result in engine damage again down the line. 3. Don't know about the SE but on the West Coast the oil change prices have skyrocketed , I believe that for 5 Qt will be something like $60+. "The More You Know"...✌
I can do my own in about 15 minutes and just drop off the used oil the next time I get new oil/filter. I hate all the upselling sales b.s of the oil change places
To be honest, price is not the real issue. Some of these oil change places can really mess up your car. They once overfilled my car with about two quarts. If I had not checked the level when I got home, this could have ended really bad. Had to drain it to the correct level. Do it yourself and you know it was done right.
Very true! I actually made a video recently where I had the dealership change the oil in one of my other vehicles and they double gasketed the drain plug and messed up the bolts on my factory skid plate.
Last time I went to that place with the initials J and L and they forgot to put the clamps back on the housing that holds the air filter so there was a small crack to let dirty air into my engine. Also they didn't screw the oil filter back on tight and oil was leaking down the side of the filter. I'm doing my own oil changes from now on.
Not everyone can do their own oil change due to the insane desighn of the vehicle, skid plates that have too be removed, oil filters that are hard and time consuming to get at. You can buy your own oil and filter then let Jiffy Lube do the dirty work....that will cut some costs.
I think this goes towards if you enjoy blue collar stuff mowing the lawn working on your car ext. So for me the cost of an oem filter and 5 quarts of my sae 5w-20 just those 2 for full synthetic is $34 this doesn't take into account drain plugs some cars require a split washer and you have to replace it Now if you do it at AAA with your membership in July they are doing a promotion full synthetic $79.99 it will be $100 with sales tax, but local tire repair shops tires plus is 54 high mileage and $60 for full synthetic. You can usually get a $10 discount if you clip the coupon on their website. Walmart will run you 55 for full synthetic and $45 for high mileage. Tires plus also charges $9 for a disposable fee and I believe Walmart does the same. Which makes 0 sense because they just recycle the oil, but what most people don't they actually resell that oil. To recap your probably saving $30-35 per oil change. If you have your own floor jack and jack stands funnel being considered. If you take it to AAA your saving a ton 70 + per oil change. So if you don't mind getting your hands a little dirty you can save some cash, but it really boils down to how much is your time worth. Also, sometimes doing it yourself is actually better because you are being less reliant on the dealer or service shops. Knowing you didn't over torque the drain plug and ultimately being able to troubleshoot your own car is a valuable skill.
I personally don’t trust the express oil change spots up here in Connecticut.. Ive changed my solaras oil myself since I bought the car close to 10 years ago and I use OEM filters every single oil change . Our oem filter is dirt cheap online.
I've always changed my own, but with me moving soon, I won't have as much ability to change right at home. I'm currently using a Valvolines Synthetic Blend and its doing it good. I own a 03 Grand Prix Its definitely saved me money in the long run, but ill try to find a good trustworthy shop that won't try to charge me too much.
That’s a nice car! Im sure the DIY maintenance has paid off with providing you with a car that has lasted a long time. Having the space to change your oil is something I definitely overlooked in my video.
I suck at finding places that do cheap oil changes. Jiffy lube wanted to charge $130 for a full synthetic change. I just went to Walmart and got valvoline and a Mobil 1 filter for $40
If you can always change your own oil and filter, the dealerships are the most dishonest disgusting crooks on the planet, I bought a Shelby GT 500 and it must use 5-50 full synthetic they offered me a free oil change, being a mechanic for 40 years I know what go's on in the auto industry, before I brought my GT 500 for the oil change I figured I'd check out the dealership and ask some questions, I go to the parts department and pretend to want to buy some motor oil for a Shelby 5-50 full synthetic, he said they don't carry that oil, so I asked what if someone comes in with a Shelby and wants an oil change, he says we use what ever we have, so glad I asked, but there was no way I would bring my car to a dealership for anything, I was testing the water and found out what I already knew, if you love your car unfortunately you have to do it yourself or find a private auto shop with an honest mechanic, but never go to the dealership they suck,I know some of you are saying my dealership is good, well there not they buy oil in bulk and if you think they have every type of oil on the market your sadly mistaken, your getting what ever the cheapest crap they could find.
That’s a valid point. I think for specialty vehicles outside the normal commuters should definitely have the oil changed either diy or like you said at a small specialty shop. Great choice of car btw. Those Shelby’s are quick!
You have not factored in the time that it costs to go to te oil change place and wait for them to do the oil change. That could be 30 minutes or more if they are busy.
Kmart changed my oil, after they punctured a hole in our van fuel tank with the lift...of course the tank was plumb full at the time. 😂 That was the last time i had my oil changed by just any shop. Was a bunch of boy-hires and the manager says; sorry we cant find a replacement tank! I replied yeah u can and u will ....TODAY! Then they found one in a wrecking yard after hours of waiting. Whew! Im picky who i let do it ever since.
Once they introduced those express oil changers, it's hard to justify it. But I mean if you have the time, you can still save a few bucks, especially if you buy your own oil in bulk.
Did they misquote you, or just an extra special deal? With their promotions I’m seeing that price for conventional. Full synthetic is at $79.99 here for Jiffy Lube, $30 off regularly $109.99. My car takes just under 5 qts. I used to exclusively use Mobil 1, but switched up to Valvoline High Mileage Maxlife extended protection or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Better add packs based on virgin oil analysis. Bulk purchased Purolator One oil filters for $5 each. Oil from Walmart or Amazon. Can do a high quality change for $35 in 15 minutes, and don’t have to drive to a place and wait.
I went with averages prices in my region at the time of the video. Prices have definitely gone up! I actually just did a full synthetic oil change recently and bought full synthetic from Walmart for $25 for six quarts and used a wix bulk filter from Rockauto for $3 so my total was $28.
Are you an OReilly Fanboy that likes sticking money up their orifice? You can buy oil that meets all the spec. at a big box store for much less when it is on sale, like on Black Friday Weekend. On sale and with mail in rebates I have bought name brand oil for $8 conventional and $10 syn for 5 qt. container. Good oil filters can be purchased for $5 each. Even cheaper if you go online and buy in bulk. So that makes oil changes $13 to $15 dollars plus sales tax. NOT $35. Plus you can change your oil faster than the time it takes to go to an oil change place and wait while they put in the cheapest oil imaginable, crank the sh1t out of your oil filter (if they really even change it at all), maybe strip your oil plug or put it in loose to fall out later, up sell you on BS and charge you extra for shop fees, environmental fees and who know what else with a bill of $75 to $140 dollars. That is the actual economics of the situation. Unless your handicap, over 80 or lazier than a box of krap, CHANGE YOU OWN OIL. And that goes for all the fat rearend women also. Most only need to do it once a year.
I changed oil on my sister's car, the oil filter was so tight it took all my strength to get it off. Thanks to oil change business.

Even if I'm saving nothing, I would rather do it myself to ensure it's done properly and the oil and filter are high quality.
Last time I went to that place with the initials J and L and they forgot to put the clamps back on the housing that holds the air filter so there was a small crack to let dirty air into my engine. I don’t blame you. One thing I’ve learned is there are a ton of knock off Toyota filters online so I stick with the part stores.
I've always changed my own, but with me moving soon, I won't have as much ability to change right at home. I'm currently using a Valvolines Synthetic Blend and its doing it good. I own a 03 Grand Prix

I would use high mileage oil in that car. You need the oil seal protection additives in high mileage oil.

In California 90 at jiffy lube. Dealer 90-150. I do my own baby💪
Wow! For that price I would definitely diy!
