I haven’t had a car payment since 2010. Love it. Newest car is a 2019 Honda Pilot. Just replaced the AC compressor and condenser in our 2006 Pilot. Cost me $500 for new Denso parts and refrigerant. Did it myself. My lack of car payments allowed me to pay my house off 9 years early. Now I have no car payments *and* no mortgage payment.

I get a new car every 3 years. I have paid upfront cash for my last 7 cars because my mother always told me... "if you have to borrow money to buy it, you can't afford it" meaning of you have to borrow money from a bank to buy it. So I keep a separate bank account that I call "car money," in which I deposit a specific amount, sometimes more if it's a good month, and at the end of 3 years, I've actually waited up to 5 years to get a more expensive car, which wasn't as nice as I was imagining it to be. So I stick to a goal of 15,000, per year, for my "car money" account, and then I try to put twice that amount into my savings account. I give myself a very limited amount for fun money. I really don't need anything and I traveled in my younger years, so I've been there, done that twice already. So my only real expenses are property taxes and insurance and utilities. Oh! And food! It's better to wait a little longer to get what you really want, and pay for it in full upfront.

Nailed it 100% I agree with everything said Also the beauty of older used cars is they are cheap and you can easily own more than one vehicle for different things. I wanted a truck to go fishing and outdoor activities so I bought a beater Tacoma with 200k miles for $3k cash. Dirt cheap insurance, easy to work on and maintain, don't care about dings and scratches, and I don't mind using it like a truck. Runs like a dream too! Plus you get the choice of what you feel like driving and if one of them has an issue you can drive the other!

If you have your own garage then that will make it easier to hold on to a car for a long time. But once your car reaches beyond 10 years you have to be ok with buying used parts or third party as manufacturers may not stock parts for it anymore.

just bought the 47 and the constant power cable. first issue was the OBD plug would not fit inside the little door on my Ford. Didnt want to try to cut out the door so, went for the less desirable 12V "cigarette lighter" location. At this point the longer cable would not reach around the trip to do neat install. Curiously, i notice the cable i got is reverse direction (angle pointing down) from your install. this means the cable will have to loop back up- not as nice. now i;m looking for right angle (pointing up) mini USB to USB A that is 10 ft.

I have a vehicle that is paid off, It is an older model 2012 Hyunda Accent and I love the little car, but now the check engine light came on and it's the catalytic converter 😭 I've tried using catalytic converter cleaners but the light stays on, so it is obviously damaged inside. Dealership has the original for 1,700.00 dollars, plus 4hr labor taxes and fees, that's 2,600 or so. Hyundai dealer charges 170.00 per hour. 4 hours x 170.00 equals 680.00 plus tax. Could a muffler shop be cheaper. Is there any way around this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏻

@atpgarageatl I went to a local muffler shop and they will charge me 800.00 parts and labor, it will be an aftermarket catalytic converter, I just hope the light doesn't come back with an aftermarket catalytic converter. After market catalytic converter are extremely cheap compared to original manufacturer's parts. Will just have to keep fingers crossed 🤞 Thanks for replying 🙏🏻

Well, it might just be that whatever you pay in the $400-$600 a month on a new car for "peace of mind" you can save for repairs of your paid off car, and probably less - you can put away $200 a month and cover annual repairs of your car.

Something that helped me was watching old movies where the main character had a nice expensive car. One I thought was impressive, like the Suburban in Jingle All the Way. Watching it now, the truck is a piece of junk, and that puts new cars into perspective, especially if tech and features are something you’re chasing. Think about it, people went into crippling debt for a car with fuel injection, it’s hilariously dumb now, but at the time, that fuel injection badge got them some social status.

I'm 37 years old and I have never spent more than $3,400 on a vehicle. I always pay in full. They are never amazing rides compared to having something new. They often last me 4-8 years on average... which is a steal compared to some peoples car payments.

I drove old cars with great success until my 40's. I recently bought a brand new, safe car for my wife and kids and a fun turbo wagon for myself. They are "paid-off" but they weren't cheap. That being said, they were worth every penny. I don't think that these new overly technical cars will last as long as my old cheap cars but I'm maintaining them better than the book and they should provide 10+ years of duty before I even question their reliability.

I have another video on my channel with another Garmin that has a battery that’s in my 4Runner and it has the parking feature. You can’t go wrong with either camera. I can’t think of any car less than ten years old that would be a suitable candidate for keeping twenty plus years and 300k miles. All those plastic engine parts like valve covers, therostae housings and intakes get brittle oveor time and can be a nightmare to work on. Same with all the wiring and connectors laying on top of the engine. Modern cars also have lots of actuator modules for climate control hidden way up under the dash. And their gears are plastic. They will wear out eventually, one at a time, start clicking, and often the entire dash has to be taken out to replace them. Newer cars have lots of sensors everywhere, which will go out, and years down the road may not be available. I’ve found mid 90s to mid 2000s Toyotas to be among the best vehicles for longivity.

Paid off cars usually need many parts and maintenance. Most individuals are not made to work on their own cars. Had cars that I purchased cash only - waisted most of my young adulthood working and repairing my car to go to work. All in the name of saving money, you know what, thinking back - I should have purchased new cars that really didn’t need heavy maintenance. I would have spent more time with my child and enjoyed life more - yes would have had a car payment but my time is more important. And no paying someone to fix something - you know people like to cheat and scam.

Buy a coarse washable air conditioning filter for your home. Cut out to fit the air filter for your car. Car will run much better, never have to pay for a filter again. The idea that you should have a normal air filter to save the engine doesn't make sense. The exhaust intake valve that reuses exhaust brings with it big coarse hard soot particles back into the cylinders and all that takes place behind the air filter.

Ok... Here is how to save a bundle! When you finish paying off your car, open a new account with your bank and each month, put that "car payment" amount in YOUR bank account. By the time you're ready to purchase your next vehicle, you'll have the cash to buy. That's right... Instead of paying interest, make those payments to yourself. It's actually quite simple... Never make car payments to someone else.

Buying a brand new car is probably the biggest financial mistake anyone can make. I'm 60, and I'm going to retire in a year, but I refuse to to pay $1000 a month, or more going into retirement. So I'm still driving my 2005 GMC Sierra, yes it has rust. Yes it has well ever 200,000 miles, but its well maintained miles. My wife's car is payed off. It was payed off the day we drove it off the lot. Yes, it was also used, and yes, it's well maintained. Keeping up on the maintenance is key to making any car last longer. I do most of my own maintenance on our vehicles, but if it's something I can't do, it goes in to fixed.

Only stupid people think that newer is better. Not only that these new cars are outrageously expensive you are getting a computer electronic sensor module junk that your 10-year-old car didn't have and for that reason was gonna last 2 times more so you actually downgraded.
