Wow, great job! Thank you so much for all the work that I know went in to making this. I really liked the Aquarian Super Kick II Clear and the Remo Coated Emperor.
The Remo P3 Smooth White done it for me. Emad 2 coming close second. I’ve been using the heavyweight for a long time because of its endurance, but it gave out on me a few days ago. This really helped clearing up my next move. Thank you for an amazing video!
Glad you enjoyed it! I love the smooth white Powerstroke a lot myself! I bought it to use as a resonant bass drum head and tried it in the batter and absolutely loved and was surprised by it!
Thanks for sharing, since the Evans Emad came out,I've been a fan and it suits my gospel style...as a teenager in the 70's I always used Remo with the foam from a couch pillow glued to the shell where it doesn't move and still was able to access lug screws....learnt thru the years it's how you tune it,it should sound deep with or without a mic💁🏾♂️
Roy thanks for doing this. I know how time consuming it was. It must have been a real labor of love. I was listening to this on my phone so keep that in mind. I've always used remo ps3 coated for my bass, it seems to work best for both live and a studio/home/practice environment. I have tried the ps 4 at home and for certain cuts it works well. I haven't used aquarians before but I really want to give them a try. The superkick ii, clear or coated seem promising. I'd really need to use and work with them for a month to get a feel for how they fit. I've used evans g1 and g2 for toms but they don't really appeal to me for bass. It's hard because I need to work with a head for a few weeks, playing with the tuning for studio and live before I can decide. It's all very time consuming and that's before you add mics to the equation. Yessh! The time it takes to decide on drum equipment and lugging them all around makes you wish you played the flute. Thanks again.
Outstanding work!!! Loved the Evans 56, and the gulp...Coated Ambassador. But, the Aquarian Superkick II is the go-to for the whole package. =AWESOME JOB!!!
Good afternoon, excellent video, I really appreciate you taking the time and trouble to do it, I would really appreciate it if you could help me with the following concern, at this moment I use a remo powerstroke 4 ttransparent head for my 22-diameter by 20-deep bass drum And no matter how much I listen to the video, I practically can't find a difference with the transparent powerstroke 3, I would really appreciate it if you could tell me what the differences are in terms of sound (Tone, bass, sustain and volume) and how they feel when playing them, I play genres like pop, rock, latin among other genres... and the idea is to know if it would be worth the change or not...
Great video! For studio, the Remo Powerstroke 3 Coated will be great, but an impact patch will extend the durability more. If I’m doing a hard rock and metal band gig, (Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC), the Remo Pinstripe or Evans EMAD Heavyweight will be perfect. If I’m doing a jazz band gig (Nat King Cole), then maybe the Ambassador Coated or Fiberskyn Ambassador. If it’s a punk rock gig (Green Day, The Ramones), the Remo Powerstroke 4 or Evans EMAD 2 will be great for that. If I’m doing a classic rock gig, (Led Zeppelin, Boston, Queen, Pink Floyd), the Emperor Coated will be great. It all depends on my personal preference, the genres of music and the durability I want
That's a LOT of work there. Thank you for that! If I was going to use any kind of internal muffling I would opt for the Remo Emperor or PinStripe. Back in the 90's I was using mostly Clear or Ebony PinStripes, with Ebony Ambassador on the reso side.
For me it was the lowly Emperor Clear. Plenty of low end but just enough highs to make the attack present. Excellent video. Thank you much for your hard work.
Back in the day we didn't have bass drum specific heads. I don't think the PowerStroke 3 and Evans EQ1 and 2 came out until 1990. PinStripes, Emperors, and C.S. were the more popular back then.
I don’t use a drum dial so I don’t have the tension settings but I think I have the tune bot settings in the video which is the closest I have. The batter heads were nearly around 45-52 all the way around on each lug and the resonant head was around 58-65 all the way around.
actually they replaced it with emad2 which has the same 6.5 mil + 10 mil thickness but they added a removable dampening foam ring. so basically it's the same head.
Funny how a youtube search "calftone emad vs" leads me to a guy from my class that I haven't seen since high school. Hi Roy! 👋 Great comparison here, very helpful. Thanks!
That was a great video with most heads sounding good. I keep getting sympathetic resonance from the floor tom (mainly) which you really seem to have eliminated. Is there a secret to it?
I get Tom noise also but I try and make sure the kick tuning is sitting nicely below the floor Tom range so they don’t compete. You can try to place a small pillow on the floor directly underneath of the floor Tom to absorb the resonance and/or put a small piece of toilet paper taped to the bottom edge of the resonant head on that floor Tom to help that and the decay in general. I always have to cut some sustain from the floor anyway.
I like the PS3 with the stripe. Question, if I put that on my DW Collector series, should I keep the little pillows in the Bass drum and still have them touch both the Batter head and the Reso head? Or no need for anything inside the Bass drum?
I would probably keep the pilllow in there from what I’ve experimented with. The ps3 has great attack and a good full sound but it’s definitely still on the open side of things. Not like a straight emperor or ambassador of course but open enough that a bit of pillow in there will absorb some of the hollow sound in the bass drum, especially for recording.
One other question. Does the impact patch that comes with it be installed on the inside or the outside? I bought the Aquarian super thin kick pad that I want to put on this Batter. Do I still use/need the impact patch then?
@@normnashtynash8815 you want to put the patch on the outside of the batter head where the beater makes contact with the head. The patch gives a little more attack in some cases but mainly reinforces that spot so the head lasts longer
Can I ask a couple questions. How do you like the EQ3 for a reso head vs say something like a Powerstroke 3, or more traditional 1 ply heads? Do you find it too muffled? Secondly, the Dunnett Reso-Tone what are your thoughts, and have you tried the non felt version for a kick batter? Also have you tried the Reso-Tone heads on toms at all? Cheers!
Your first question. I have tried both and although they are very similar in what you end up hearing in the recording, the eq3 has a touch more low end bloom to me and is one of the all around best choices for a reso bass head in my opinion but either will work. Usually the thicker the reso head, the more sustain you will get. I also like old school clear or coated ambassadors on the bass reso head. Less bottom end but a nice punch. I did try the non felt version on the batter and I actually thought it sounded decent but to me it didn’t punch as nicely as the Powerstroke 3 batter head that it seemed to want to sound like so I prefer the Powerstroke 3 clear and coated on the batter if I’m going to go Remo. If I’m using Evans than I prefer the eq2 clear for open and the gmad for pre dampened. Unfortunately I have not tried the resotone on the toms yet. I honestly thought that the resotone heads were overpriced for what they ended up sounding like, aside from the kick resonant head with the felt strip. I also found that the felt strip did very little in dampening the sustain which is why I also use a cylindrical pillow against the inside of that resonant head. They charge too much for the reso tone heads in my opinion so I’d rather go with time tested Remo ps3’s or Evans EQ series, etc. Hope that helps out some! Roy
Yes I tried that head on the reso and really like it! Look at the drum recording video I recently posted and you will see that head on the drums and hear it
@@roycox4415 Thanks Roy! Ya, sorry about all the questions, but I'm just abit nervous because I'm preparing for a drum recording coming up that I'm engineering/recording, and I just want it to go well, and want to choose some good heads to help me out abit for what I'm going for. I've recorded drums abit before, and used to play alot of drums, but it's a new kit that I've never recorded with, and I haven't experimented with alot of different heads before, but I am confident in my ability to tune, and tune for the situation/room, so I should be fine. If anything though, what I've struggled with the most on recordings in the past is kick. I've always been able to get inside kick sounds I'm happy with, but I've always been let down by my outside kick sound results, and I am a fan of good outside kick sounds, and also mics/gear isnt the issue. I think a big part has been using beat up/shitty drums that dont tune well, older heads, and sometimes the player, but the kit I'm using shouldnt be too bad. I just got a Pearl Reference Series kit 22/16/12/10 so should go fairly good! I think Ive decided on Coated Emps for all the batters, Clear Ambassadors for bottoms, and now just trying to decide on kick. I'm thinking a P3 Coated or Smooth White with a beater pad, and either the EQ3 or Resotone for the reso. Whats your opinion, should I get a Felt Tone or regular Resotone for the Reso? (I am going to likely add muffling inside anyway, and cut a port hole so not sure if I should go for an un dampened reso, and then just dampen to taste after? What do you think?
wow. so many options! anyone can give me a recommendation: for some nice tight funky dry bass sound (a la nate smith), which heads are the best option?
Eq2 louder than eq3🤔 ,which is very quite i find. I Switch between eq4 clear or frosted and a Powerstroke coated. But the clear Powerstroke Sounds louder Here than an eq4.
Thank for making this video! So helpful. Will the SQ3 or PS3 give enough boom for my 20" kick ? They both sound controlled but I need a slightly bigger sound from it and dont want to choke it too much.
I do find the superkick heads to have the most low end. I would try a Superkick 2 on that 20”. I don’t use them on my 22’s because they actually have too much low end for my recording tastes
@@roycox4415 Thanks for the response. Ill check it out! I note you didn't play the Evans G2. Do you have experience with those? Do you think they might give more volume?
I just changed my batter from the powerstroke pro that it came with. I had gotten used to it but read a bunch of reviews of everyone absolutely destroying the pro, I decided that maybe i didnt know what ‘good’ sounded like. I put a powerstroke 3 on and honestly it sounds so thin and crap, like a deadened floor tom with no low end anymore. Is this what a ‘good’ bass drum is supposed to sound like?? Its all punch and no low end
It’s funny you wrote this comment. After years and I mean years of experimenting with drums in the studio setting I can’t tell you how much your statement hit home for me. When you first start working with tuning and prepping drums for recording tend to lean towards more muffling and trying to get the drums to sound in front of you like what you’re hearing in your favorite tracks, songs, etc. I chased that for years until I realized that what the drums sound like I front of me is absolutely not what they may sound like when recorded. I used to love the Superkick series but now it sounds to muffled and hip hop like for me. The Powerstroke has become my favorite along with heads like the emperor and controlled sound on bass drum. The thing these helps help with, when chasing a great all around tone, is great attack and a full low end that comes out when miked up. I used to muffle my snares way to much until I learned to tune better and now I’m going back to thinner heads or something like a controlled sound with no muffling. Again it all goes back to what sound you are looking for. Remember that hearing less low end when playing and seated behind the drums doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not there, you may just have more attack then you are used to hearing.
@@roycox4415 after a few days of it being on I actually like the sound now! I think your ears have to adjust and when i played with ear protection i could actually hear more of the low end weirdly. I think the cymbals were masking the bass drum and my ears hadnt quite adjusted to the new eq of where the kick now is. Ill see how it goes but i quite like the sound now. I also agree about the room, i think if i get someone else to play it that might be a good test
I searched you up on here to check out your channel cover photo. I just updated mine with one of your shots. I told Erin to tell you I’ll create a new one for you if you want! I appreciate you brother!
I like to tune low so I'm pretty sure that my batter on each lug was around 50-54 and the reso lugs were around 65. That's usually about where my heads sit with a tune bot
Famously Mutt Lange likes to record every drum cymbal and hi hat individually....how tedious for the poor drummer too 😑 I use a clear Emad 2 but thinking of changing to a clear ambassador for a more open boomy sound.
Not much of a difference between those two heads although the dot added a tiny bit of attack to the inside kick mic tone when recording. Nothing you might hear out loud in the room though. Some of the heads however had a much larger difference in how it “felt” when playing. Like the thicker coated heads from Aquarian. Definitely a feel difference to me.
Haha! You’re right! I must have taken the wrong take of that head and matched it up. It’s the correct sound for that bass head but probably wrong take of video. Nice catch!
He picked a relaxed easy to repeat middle volume. About the only way to make it through capturing all the sounds in a short time. It would have been nice to have a low to high volume sequence for each head, but that would have added 10% more time to get it done.
Drum heads have zero to do with anything from the snare to the kick to the up and floor toms it always comes down to who’s hitting them. Preference is an individual choice there’s no test for that. I use Remo pinstripes on all my drums except my snare which is a coated E-3 and for me,I wouldn’t change. I mean no disrespect to anyone but have you ever noticed when you play people know it’s you? It’s the attack the feel and what your skills as a drummer are like regardless of the kit it’s gonna sound like you, just like a guitar rig your style is your business card.
I agree but that has nothing to do with why this video was made or testing the tonal differences between a bunch of different heads. Thanks for sharing.

@@jamescassidy4045what type of music are you recording?
good video tks. at what Hz do you tune the kick for batter and resonant with tunebot? tks
Better lugs we’re around 52 and the reso lugs we’re around 65 on the tune bot
Wow no remo Powersonic?
Deciding either remo pinstripe or the powerstroke3 .. looks like im getting the powerstroke3.. any opinion?? Ty for the vid
Can’t go wrong with a ps3. Always sounds great and can be used for any genre
wow. so many options! anyone can give me a recommendation: for some nice tight funky dry bass sound (a la nate smith), which heads are the best option?
I would probably use a super kick II for that type of tone
PS4 CLEAR - 10:42
PINSTRIPE CLEAR - 15:36
PS 3 CLEAR - 8:15
Evans Emad 56 Calftone...but at last they are all close together
WHAT'S THE TENSION?? WHAT TYPE OF TUNING LOW, MID, OR HIGH?? WHAT'S THE RESO SKIN??? NOT GOOD AT ALL
@@freedomgardens5296 listen to the video. Absolutely all of that is mentioned.
Yo Roy, Why am I just discovering your video?
hey bro!
@@roycox4415 Love what you do and doing. Keep it going.
Remo Coated Emperor
Great video… thx!
Appreciate you checking it out!
P3 black dot
Love that one also!
I see you, Roy!
Haha! How did you even find this?!
I searched you up on here to check out your channel cover photo. I just updated mine with one of your shots. I told Erin to tell you I’ll create a new one for you if you want! I appreciate you brother!
What’s the bass drum tuning device you are using ?
It’s called a tunebot
do you have a tune bot setting Kick Batter/reso from this Session?
I like to tune low so I'm pretty sure that my batter on each lug was around 50-54 and the reso lugs were around 65. That's usually about where my heads sit with a tune bot
@@roycox4415Sounds great in your recording- exactly how i have mine Set ;)!
@@texxhexxmm appreciate that! My favorite tuning combo
@@roycox4415 also on 24" Kick?
Famously Mutt Lange likes to record every drum cymbal and hi hat individually....how tedious for the poor drummer too 😑
I use a clear Emad 2 but thinking of changing to a clear ambassador for a more open boomy sound.
The ambassador or emperor will give you a very open, boomy sound. I really loved both of them when I tried them during this video.
Ps3 sw was really nice
Did you notice any difference in rebound between the ps3 and ps3 with dot?
Not much of a difference between those two heads although the dot added a tiny bit of attack to the inside kick mic tone when recording. Nothing you might hear out loud in the room though. Some of the heads however had a much larger difference in how it “felt” when playing. Like the thicker coated heads from Aquarian. Definitely a feel difference to me.
Remo power stroke black dot sounded best to me!
thanks !!!
You're welcome!
🤔 the Evans eq2 clear for me.
That’s a great head and one of my favs also!
the p3 clear of course
EQ3, EQ2 And EQ4 all the way for me. I absolutely love those clear bass drum heads evan's makes. cannot get enough of the EQ3 in particular.
6:22 i hear two hits on bass drum but i see only one :D hmmmm....
Haha! You’re right! I must have taken the wrong take of that head and matched it up. It’s the correct sound for that bass head but probably wrong take of video. Nice catch!
I need to learn that technique, that’s efficiency.
8:47
10:45
3:22 vs 6:22
nice if you would've been hitting the kick drum a little harder
He picked a relaxed easy to repeat middle volume. About the only way to make it through capturing all the sounds in a short time. It would have been nice to have a low to high volume sequence for each head, but that would have added 10% more time to get it done.
Million dollar snare sound...
Thanks so much! That snare always sounds great!
Cmon man pick your heel up and hit the damn thing
He should have tried the Aquarian drum heads
You must not have watched the whole video. I show 7 of the Aquarian drumheads
Is that a wooden beater?
Yes it is!
Thank you
