The gourds one of my all time favorite bands. Their first 5 albums are brilliant. "Dems Good Beeble", "Stadium Blitzer", "Ghosts of Hallelujah", "Bolsa De Agua", "Cow, Fish, Fowl or Pig". All their albums are great.
If I had a nickel for every time I heard the Gourds, I’d still want to hear them again. The Electric Lounge was where I first saw them during some Acoustic Music Festival held over the course of a week shortly after they moved to Austin. Jimmy Smith found the keyboard used on Ziggy Stardust in the dumpster behind the Electric Lounge as I recall. I remember talking with Kevin and Jimmy at the bar there discussing something called the Internet. I also remember 50 cent beer night at Waterloo Ice House, sort of.
Yes I was in college at the time and was into Phish. A friend said hey here this Phish version of Gin and Juice and I said, that’s not Phish but it’s awesome
I was 25 years old before I had ever even knew who snoop dogg was and I dont think I have ever even heard the original but the gourds are and thus tune is epic
Great story! Just saw Kevin/Shinyribs at the City Winery in NYC LAST NIGHT! He briefly - for a chorus or two - sang "Gin n' Juice" within one of their songs songs. The audience dug it. Great show.
Gourds are one of my all time favorite bands. I brought them to Missoula, Montana many times 2001-2013. Kev Russell wrote a song called "Lower 48" he claimed was partly inspired by me and some of my sayings. Miss the lads
I've never heard of the Gourds until today, but I'm familiar with this recording. I got it off Napster back in the day. The file name is "Son Volt- Gin and Juice.mp3." (I was probably searching for Son Volt when I found it.) I knew it wasn't Son Volt, but the Artist tag inside the file was "String Cheese Incident" That sounded plausible to me, so I've always assumed it was them.
This is the song that led me to the Gourds. One of my friends played it for me, telling me it was a Phish song. I knew immediately it was not Phish, but I had to find out who this band was. One day, I was on a Leftover Salmon message board. Some folks thought they were behind the cover. An admin on the board set the record straight. It was the Gourds. The next day, I went to the record store. The only Gourds CD they had was Ghosts of Hallelujah. I bought it and have been a huge fan of the Gourds and Shinyribs ever since!
The past week I watched 3 hip-hop "reactors" listen to The Gourds' "Gin and Juice", grinning, grooving, and saying they think they like this better than the original. That's some pretty big praise in my book.
I bet I downloaded that song 20 or 30 times. I would show friends and relatives how to use Napster and would always use this song as a tutorial. Without fail everyone loved it, even my grandmother thought it was great. The Shinyribs Austin City Limits is way up on my favorites list Sweet Potato is a masterpiece.
❤❤❤🎉🎉❤ oh shnap it's on this may be the first topic and subject Jules got to chat with before the great Otis Gibbs did...love love love...teo of my most fav genuine cool cats ever much love SJOCR Stephen Jules Otis Career Rubin
Dang. I was probably 13 when I first downloaded that cover. My buds and I wore it out too! There’s a live show of John Moreland here on YT where some goofball yells out “play Freebird!” John pay it’s no attention so the man then yell’s out “Gin ‘n Juice.” lol John then has some words. Also you’re right about Phish, I’m from Georgia and had heard of the band when I was 12/13 but to this day have never listened to the music. lol
My version was labeled as Less Claypool. I got it from Napster back in like 2000 while working at an ISP in Missoula MT. So glad to see this to set the record straight.
First time I heard it, it was under Hank III. That said, love the Gourds and Shinyribs. (If you're reading this, Kevin, would love to jam with you sometime!)
That high beam thing really happened in Alaska. According to the local legend. I even remember what gas station they were shot at. No Jin or Juice tho.
"Gin and Juice" was listed as a Phish song when I first heard it as well. I knew that it wasn't a Phish song. It was right after a Bonaroo festival that I heard it and which led me to believe it was Phish and some other musicians that were just jamming and it got recorded. It took awhile before I found out that it was The Gourds.
I totally downloaded this as “phish” circa 2000. I was very confused but thought maybe they had some different singer or something. Eventually figured it was mislabeled once I heard more phish. But I learned it and played it at every single high school party to great approval lol. A few years later a guy told me it was the Gourds.
My wife and I were psyched when the Gourds were playing our town. Gin & Juice, baby! So as the night goes on and it’s getting late, no G $ J! So we holler our request out and it was like they made a point of looking at us. And wouldn’t play the song. My wife was crushed and couldn’t understand why they treated us that way. No fan here.

all those poor kids that went on Phish tour only to be disappointed. They came back to Grateful Dead tour in a hurry! I knew a guy that drove truck for the Jimmy Kimmel show...that sounds about right-those people are spun!
As a UNT alumni I love hearing stories from little Dentron! Such a great music scene around there then. Thanks Otis for all the great work! Edit* The Gourds and Bad Livers=perfection!
Gin and Juice is one of the most played songs in my I pod I have 3 covers of it and The Gourds is the best . Richard Cheese is 2nd Snoopy comes in 3rd : )
I love me some shiny ribs but I still miss the gourds.
Agreed. Still fond of Blood of the Ram.

If you can listen to "Gin and Juice" with a mandolin chop as rhythm without smiling you have no soul!!
Without at doubt that jam is lighting in a bottle!!
I first Napstered it labeled as Hank III.
Yes I was in college at the time and was into Phish. A friend said hey here this Phish version of Gin and Juice and I said, that’s not Phish but it’s awesome
I love this version of the song. I have always enjoyed when songs are covered in another genre.
These cats played Oregon Country Fair 8 years or so ago and when they played gin in juice the place erupted. Great band!!
Kev was in portland in summer
Saw Kevin's band Shinyribs a couple years ago. They were GREAT!

One of the best Covers!!!🐿️😎🐿️
I love The Gourds, love the song, love Kevin and love you, Otis. I really enjoy your videos.

Ah yes, the Gourds, saw them many times and this song was absolutely killer! Long live the Electric Lounge
Love this story and love their version of the tune!

I, too, prefer it to the original

Kevin is such a good guy. He has always been so kind to my friends and me at his shows. I love seeing things take off for him.

This was the club closer at teen night in the early 2000’s.
i’ve wanted to be in this band since i heard em waft thru my window at 900 S Lamar in the summer of 95.
Great cover!!

For whatever it's worth, I've only ever seen that track, which i've played more times than I count, as being attributed to The Gourds.
This is so cool. We catch Shineyribs at Courevilles every chance we get. Thanks Otis for having Kevin on.
The Phish bass player is Mike Gordon! Always seemed like a nice guy
It was def listed as Phish when I first downloaded it.
My version was labeled as Less Claypool. I got it from Napster back in like 2000 while working at an ISP in Missoula MT. So glad to see this to set the record straight.
YYESSSS!
Hope you got Kevin to talk about the origin stories of some others too like Tex-Mex Mile and Pill Bug Blues, got to be more there.
It took me 6 HOURS to d/l that jam off of Napster!
First time I heard it, it was under Hank III.
That said, love the Gourds and Shinyribs. (If you're reading this, Kevin, would love to jam with you sometime!)
Shiny Ribs! Denton is where the Whitmore Sisters are from! I loved his vist on kmrd's Metaphysical Biscuit's community radio show in Madrid, nm
Love Love Love
Gin and juice on napster was my intro to the gourds
Russell is a master performer, maybe the white bluegrass version of Howlin Wolf.
Leo Moracchioli does a metal version of Gin and Juice that kicks ass as well.
First time I found it it was listed as a Hank III song.
Limewire😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Went to see the Gourds at the Granada in Dallas and they didn't play it. I was pissed!
I covered this one, and folk came out and DANCE! And any band can cover it..
That high beam thing really happened in Alaska. According to the local legend. I even remember what gas station they were shot at. No Jin or Juice tho.
When I first found it it was labeled leftover salmon
More understandable than being concussed as a Phish tune.
Not "Enter Sandman - Metallica"?
Kevin Russell!
Otis you scored with this one.
I truly remember the headlight thing. Crazy times.
Saw the Gourds a bunch . Every time they came through the ATL.
"Gin and Juice" was listed as a Phish song when I first heard it as well. I knew that it wasn't a Phish song. It was right after a Bonaroo festival that I heard it and which led me to believe it was Phish and some other musicians that were just jamming and it got recorded. Saw a great show by The Gourds at Slim's in San Francisco, they were on fire
i miss the gourds and i love me some taco donut palace !
Thanks Otis. More Shinyribs please!
What a great story, from a colourful character, lol. Had to hear that song.
I totally downloaded this as “phish” circa 2000. I was very confused but thought maybe they had some different singer or something. Eventually figured it was mislabeled once I heard more phish. all those poor kids that went on Phish tour only to be disappointed. They came back to Grateful Dead tour in a hurry! I knew a guy that drove truck for the Jimmy Kimmel show...that sounds about right-those people are spun!
According to the file sharing services, my friend's band's hit record was "Paranoia Paranoia" by Green Day.
And NO! It was not Phish, not Dave Matthews
Great story! What's Napster? lol
Classic.
As a UNT alumni I love hearing stories from little Dentron! Such a great music scene around there then. Thanks Otis for all the great work!
Edit* The Gourds and Bad Livers=perfection!
