Bluegrass interpretation. Snoop loved it. Shows how different cultures have more in common than differences if you want to look at things in a social context.
I heard this decade or so ago. And yes those are word for word of the original. They had to get Snoop's permission to do it and apparently he laughed and loved it enough for them to record it and release it.
Not sure about the permission... This was when napster came out. It was one of the most downloaded songs on napster. Unfortunately, it was being recirculated under the band FISH. Fish reaped the rewards of the popularity while the gourds kept being gourds. I personally know the gourds. Unreal how things turn out.
They’re not clowning on it, that’s the best part. They play it straight and have fun with it knowing that it’s funny that they’re even doing this. The end result is both ironically and unironically great, and imo is a beautiful example of how similar we all really are.
What makes this version so much fun is that it's not a novelty, it's not a joke. You can't play a cover this good unless you love the song you're covering. It's two genres that have nothing in common merging so well it seemed like they always should have.
I used to work with the guy who sings on this track. He is a serious musical omnivore, from old hip-hop to bluegrass and all kinds of other things. So you're absolutely right. He is a fan. I mean, they know it's funny, but they're into it.
This is "talking blues." Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen's cover of Jimmy Ryan's "Hot Rod Lincoln" is in this genre. The genre's have much in common. I do hope you know that Johnny Cash played many songs about murder. "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die."
tho Kevin Russell isnt really country id argue as a fan of both great so called country music and classic hip hop they are less not related than many genres....i once did a mix for fun of loretta lynn and conways twittys it takes two and rob base easy rocks and it was very easy in some ways cuz of the connections not on the surface but whic hare many in that kind of music and from where it comes and why......and i tithink its rad!
I am the one who has continually put this up for a poll vote when it fit a particular theme and always so disappointed it never won. Thanks to another fan of this version of the song @scapito, she helped me make it happen, finally!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It's been on my play list forever, and I don't usually listen to this kind of music 😂. You know when Snoop was high fiving them, it was a brilliant cover! ❤
The lead singer and playing the ukulele, is a guy from Austin TX named Kevin Russel. After the Gourds broke up Kevin started a new band called "Shinyribs". Today there going strong and playing dates all over the USA. You all need to review Shinyribs and enjoy the sound of the Gourds but with a lot more swamp rock. They are all over UA-cam.
In Australia, we have a massive Country Music Festival, in the city of Tamworth. Musicians from all over the world play there, in all the town's venues, and a massive stage on a local sports field. It's big deal. Every day and night, buskers fill the main street with small PA's and try to out do each other. My band, less the drummer busked there one year. 3 hours, mains street, 8pm, 110F still. We played for an hour, then had a break. The guitar player went to get us pizzas. While he was gone, I put down my double bass and grabbed my mandolin, cranked the PA, and let my best Tenor off the chain and Tamworth got a Gourds style Gin'n'juice. The crowd gathered. Jaws dropped. People danced. People clapped. Some sang along. I finished, put the mando down, and they dispersed, as there was a lot going on in the street that night. Guitar got back with the pizza, and asked how things were going. "Not much. Pretty quiet." The aboriginal Lionel Rose impersonator in the next spot on the street had seen the whole thing and started laughing his guts out.
Just love that music tributes reach across so many genres. ::sigh:: It's just wonderful. Edited to add that BJ steals the show on this one. His face hearing word for word and the respect the Gourds are paying to original is incredible.
It is BECAUSE of THIS song that I EVER knew...and still to this day (almost 30yrs later) I realize from singing along with this reaction, KNOW every word to "Gin n Juice". Thank you so much for reacting to this song, loved how you reacted.
I remember the days when this was mislabeled as being by everyone from Phish to Dave Matthews to Blues Traveler on Napster. I didn't learn who the actual guys were until Bonnaroo 2005 when I just happened to walk by their show. Heard the guy's voice and instantly knew, stayed and watched the rest of the show (they did the crowd-pleasing and played this as their "encore"/last song). These guys are really good.
we used to listen to this ridcolously often and i knew no way Phish were capable of such a thing not ever they lack the talent humility nor gumption....it seemed too good humble and cool for widespread and i thought well maybe itys blues traveller....i only really got cued in to to who it was when i got to do the firs interview chat of two so far as a volunteer disc jockey on a non profit commmuntiy radio station with Kein Russell now of Shinyribs then of the Gourds..... he actually had to call Napster eventually and btw is one of the nicest co9olets people ever.
Back in the day me and my roommates would host pool table tournaments in my garage with friends and family. If this song came on we’d had to stop the games and just jam out for a sec.
I love when artists can take another artists’ song and make it sound so totally different from the original! Take a listen to “Train In Vain”…the original from The Clash. Then listen to Dwight Yoakam’s version…sounds like 2 completely different songs! Both versions are awesome. This “Gin & Juice” version got me cracking the “F” up 😅
It's actually in the format of Blue Grass music.. But the first time I heard this was in the late 90s... And it blew us all away. Was played at every frat party we went to.
LOVE that y'all reacted to this! Takes me back! They're not clowning, paying tribute and putting their spin on it! Great band, super talented guys. Please check out Blood of the Ram, Cracklins, and Blankets! Those guys are good, I promise! Love it!
Really? It’s old school- but you guys make it so fun to listen to it again.. Asia your laugh is hysterical and BJ the facial expressions that you make are timeless! Amazing! You guys make it fun again after all these years
Yeah!! Snoop loves it! Should check out Hayseed Dixie. Got their bones doing bluegrass AC/DC. They later did KISS, Queen and quite a few other classics bluegrass.
I had the DJ play this at my wedding reception in 2008. He was worried it was going to offend my family and clear the floor... we had about 75 people shaking their asses.
This is a great example of a song that got HUUUGE thanks to that first generation of file sharing(music downloading) - the only problem is that everyone thought it was by Phish, because that's what it was always labeled as... But, aside from that whole mislabeling thing(a few of those tripped me up back in the day lmao), great example of how 'illegal file sharing' can actually elevate a work and [potentially] the artist too. Not that that was any kind of common of course LOL, but it's really interesting getting to watch these kinds of things evolve in all sorts of unpredictable ways. Massive party hit when I was in HS(class of '07 shaht aht), plenty of unspeakable [to your parents at least] things went down to this one!
I heard this live for the first time way back in 199 something at the Electric Lounge in Austin, Texas . Was so fucking great. The Gourds know how make music.
There's a video on snoop listening to this. Yall should check out The Carolina Chocolate Drops doing Hit em up style. If you can cross genres and the song is still awesome it's legit.
Kevin Russell is the singer. His now group is shiney ribs. Best way to explain that group and style is new Orleans funk! Definitely a jamming group not so bluegrass sounding as well
If you dig the bluegrass covers check these out Steve 'n' Seagulls - Thunderstruck The Cleverlys - No Diggity The Gravel Spreaders - Number of the Beast Iron Horse - Rocket Man
This is an amazing cover. Always been one of my favorites. Love the gourds version. It also speaks a lot for Snoop with how good the original song was that it can be made into a real song with singing.
Oh...the video you watched wasn't the full song! The video you picked cut off a big chunk at the end . A lot of people mistakenly think is the band Hayseed Dixie which also does bluegrass covers of popular songs. Their original song "I'm Keeping Your Poop (in a jar)" is actually really good for a slower broken love song.
Hey! These guys are from Texas! Just like y'all. And just like y'all, they dug a song from Snoop. And they sang it like the Texas country boys they are.
You MUST listen to Big Wreck perform Ghosts live at Suhr Factory. It's amazing. This band is so under rated its crazy. My fiance and my friends are talking about flying from Texas up to Canada just to see them live.
I laughed my butt off so hard when I first heard this song My homeboy dr Dre lost it, it is hillbilly to the extreme that's what makes it so funny it's that country singer it's hillbilly I can only imagine Snoop Dogg laughing his ass off when he heard this remix thank you guys for playing this and bring it back great memories
So check out more covers by Kevin Russell and Shinyribs! Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls, Bitc$ Better Have my Money are two good ones. Originals even better, I’ve Got Your Medicine…
What No!!! Am a 57 white Snoop Lover & this is killing me. I cracked up my friends during my Gulf War days doing my best Snoop rendition- know every word. PLEASE REACT TO THE ORIGINAL- Snoop and Dre were EPIC
I guess this is a hellafide gangsta lean from an old pickup truck! Rock/Rap on✌️ FYI - I’m a white guy who grew up on 80’s country, Kurtis Blow, Plublic Enemy, Skynard, Easy & everything in between! Love it all. And still won’t stop! ❤️ great job!
I haven’t heard these guys in so long! Hayseed Dixie! These guys are a comedy band that actually kicks ass! They are really THAT good. SEARCH- HAYSEED DIXIE covers Snoop Dog, my god. They nail every one to a “T”, that’s talent. If you listen to them enough you will start believing it was their song first! They owned these songs! SEARCH Hayseed Dixie Bohemian Rhapsody! Then listen to the original 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You guys should check out the Cleverlys! They do awesome versions of No Diggity, (F*ck) Forget You, I Gotta Feelin’, Walk Like an Egyptian, and much more. 🙂

Nope just a straight up killer cover.

Its Snoops fav version of this song! Heard him say it in an interview once!

The first time I heard this version, I had only one thought..."This is pure f'ing genius!".
The rabbit hole goes further down and comes out with SHINYRIBS! We The shinytribe welcome and dare you to join & listen. The best vibe ever.
I am the one who has continually put this up for a poll vote when it fit a particular theme and always so disappointed it never won. OK, I had to watch this a couple of times. One of my favorite reactions from you guys. It was worth the wait after my millions of requests for it 🥰!
Thank you thank you thank you, for requesting this 😘🥰😘🥰
Didn't Snoop do this with a country singer? Toby Keith maybe??
@@kelleewolfe6875 I have no idea. Are you thinking this cover version by the Gourds, or Snoop's original rap version? Might have to search that, lol!
That’s the comment I was gonna make. 🤙🏻. Love that guy.
His cover of Megan Trainor’s All About That Bass is cool too.
Not a ukulele. It's a mandolin.
All about that bass!!!
I like Kevin, but Gourds show were better than Shiny Ribs. They were so good together.

I saw this at an outdoor concert with kids and grannies everywhere in Nacogdoches, TX in 2003.

Kevin is now playing as Shinyribs.
Ya I never looked into it then this video came up, my version was always labeled as Phish. Never looked into them and likely won't haha

The biggest beauty about music is that it draws people together.
I've had this song downloaded for years and it's always a party hit....:)
Yes it is. Also J, no "double G" in your name? 🤣

It's actually in the format of Blue Grass music.. But the first time I heard this was in the late 90s... And it blew us all away. Was played at every frat party we went to.
The Gourds are Great! They are all fantastic musicians. In concert they swap instruments around... each of them can play all the instruments

When people ask me what is the best concert I've ever seen, I say I don't care about that. Ask me what the funnest concert I've ever seen. These guys.
Yeah!! Snoop loves it! Should check out Hayseed Dixie. Got their bones doing bluegrass AC/DC. They later did KISS, Queen and quite a few other classics bluegrass.
That was awesome. Snoop would be proud. 💯🔥 😆
He was. There is video of him somewhere talking about how much he loved this cover.
This was a big hit on college campuses when it came out. Hilarious cover!! Great reaction!
I had the DJ play this at my wedding reception in 2008. He was worried it was going to offend my family and clear the floor... we had about 75 people shaking their asses.
Killing it on the ukulele, lol!
Mandolin, my dude; mandolin, not ukulele.

I’m so glad somebody did a reaction to this song and I like this version as well.
This song is such great twist to an iconic hip hop song
I heard this live for the first time way back in 199 something at the Electric Lounge in Austin, Texas . Was so fucking great. The Gourds know how make music.
This is rap turned into blue grass and they did a fantastic job.

I've heard bluegrass covers of a bunch of different genres and they nail it every time. Best video ever is watching Snoop groovin to the Gourds.
Kevin Russell is the singer. His now group is shiney ribs. Best way to explain that group and style is new Orleans funk! Definitely a jamming group not so bluegrass sounding as well
Shinytribe
The first time I heard this song, Napster was where I got it.
What a fun song!!! And, very clever!!! Excellent reaction, AGAIN!!!
This version always puts a smile on my face, it’s fun!
If you dig the bluegrass covers check these out
Steve 'n' Seagulls - Thunderstruck
The Cleverlys - No Diggity

Iron Horse - Rocket Man
All good!
This is an amazing cover. Always been one of my favorites. Love the gourds version. It also speaks a lot for Snoop with how good the original song was that it can be made into a real song with singing.
Okay, this is the dopest cover of Snoop's song that will ever be... No Diggity, No Doubt
It was the most downloaded song on Napster for a couple years. (Source - Kevin Russell - The Gourds)

Saw it live when it was new to their set. Best days of my life.
Exact words. It’s too good. I truly respect how they payed homage to Snoop and the song. Too damn good.
Hey! These guys are from Texas! Just like y'all. And just like y'all, they dug a song from Snoop. And they sang it like the Texas country boys they are.
Kevin Russell is a genius. My dad and stepmom follow his current band Shinyribs around our area
The live version of this at the Bluebird Theater is also really good. They really bust out all of the instruments.
Wow you hit on some great songs today that I haven't heard in a long time!! Thanks for another awesome reaction!
So glad you enjoyed this version as much as I did the first time I heard it, LOL
You MUST listen to Big Wreck perform Ghosts live at Suhr Factory. It's amazing. This band is so under rated its crazy. My fiance and my friends are talking about flying from Texas up to Canada just to see them live.

I love this since I grew up in the ghetto in a part Native family in a ghetto neighborhood in the city so my family was part ghetto and part county
So check out more covers by Kevin Russell and Shinyribs! Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls, Bitc$ Better Have my Money are two good ones. Originals even better, I’ve Got Your Medicine…
Reminds me of high school lol. this always made the bond fire playlist
What No!!! Am a 57 white Snoop Lover & this is killing me.
I cracked up my friends during my Gulf War days doing my best Snoop rendition- know every word.
PLEASE REACT TO THE ORIGINAL-
Snoop and Dre were EPIC
Snoop absolutely loved this version and has a reaction to it. It’s ok to like both
Hick Hop...classic and surreal...great track
I guess this is a hellafide gangsta lean from an old pickup truck!
Rock/Rap on✌️
FYI - I’m a white guy who grew up on 80’s country, Kurtis Blow, Plublic Enemy, Skynard, Easy & everything in between! Love it all. And still won’t stop! ❤️ great job!
Another good one for music cover that crossed to another genre is "Hey Yeah" by the Sequia's ft Avi Kaplan. This is a nice blue grass sound.
They sang it perfectly
I DJd at my neighbours 50th birthday bash a few months back, dropped this and the place went fuckin insane 😂
Asia's laugh @ 3:01 is everything.
Y'all make me laugh quite often but this is one of my fave reactions. As seasoned as I am I've dug this tune forever! Oh, Asia🤣🤯 thank you, Joni!
Our pleasure! lol
Been waiting for this since seeing the live stream! Top ten fave reactions ever. ❤🔥
🙌
Listen to “Gangsta Lean” by the Gourds
Yeah this is def not clowning, they love the original, as do I. As I do this. Crossovers are so fun, and, in a weird way, unite ppl. I love it
This version helped me with the lyrics that I couldn't quite make out in Snoop's song
🤔💭The Cleverlys "No Diggity", "Low", or "Walk Like an Egyptian" .. or any of their songs 👍
Up right bass with a mandolin and banjo. Blue grass can do it all.
I'm always happy when I see people that never gave bluegrass a listen they move and Grove and love it like I do.
They killed this!
It almost sounds like gin and juice to the tune of Glory Days (Bruce Springsteen)
You should have then do it live. I saw them in Asheville, NC. Love it
Country doing it justice!
They absolutely are not clowning on it.
The Gourds' music has been called SlamGrass.
At :59 seconds, the mood goes from okay to well then, alright!
I laughed til I cried. I heard this before I ever heard the original. They do some others....That was great fun!
The line between west coast rap and Appalachian bluegrass is closer than you think and we’re all better for it.
I've been jammin' to this for a long time! I thought it was Leftover Salmon for ever. Then I found out it was The Gourds.. hehe
I have been waiting for it hahaha. Been requesting for a while 🤣
Hope you like it!
Calvin being cool enough to allow the Gourds to record this song, unbelievable. Snoop supporting Biden, so he's crazy for sure.
My favorite version of Gin N Juice
gangsta bluegrass...snoop apparently loved this version, i think there's even a video of him watching it.
it would be great to see you reacting to more Alt.Americana/Alt.Country, in my view the best musical genre of recent times. There is a lot of it.
Glad ya finally did it.😊
This song was made out of a sense of humor and love. There's no calling out rap here.
If you want a good song with Gin in the title then do Death Angel - Cold Gin(Kiss cover)
😂😂😂😂😂😂Im laughing and crying!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I don't think they clowning. I think they are just presenting a banger in a different vein.
The term she is looking for is “Hickafide”
Almost like a country rap lol😂😂😂
Such a fun version of the Snoop classic.
Music goed beyond race and culture. It brings us together.
PEACE BE THE JOURNEY
People who dunk on this version would have been the same people at ABC/Capitol who told Ray Charles that doing Modern Sounds in Country Music was a bad idea.
Love the remix !!!
If you haven't listened to it yet, check out the song "Boyz In The Hood" by Dynamite Hack.
Kevin Russell is a Bad Ass #shinyribs
