Exactly, this movie just gives me dread in a way probably none can ever compare to, there’s just a scale and atmospheric quality that few horror films if any can match. Most horror films I just think all I have to do is locate somewhere else where the ghost/monster/killer resides, or at least fun fast enough away from it. Here, nowhere is safe, whether it’s the threat from the alien invaders, or the opportunistic humans made desperate by the situation, this world is truly nightmarish. Probably the only thing I would genuinely describe as “epic horror”.

Which cauased a riff between Spielberg and Cruise ever since, but their recent interaction at the 2023 luncheon gives hope they have reconciled.
Fun fact: the studio purchased a decomissioned passenger jet and had it transported to their backlot (the shipping charges cost more than the purchase of the aircraft did). They then broke it into pieces for the set. It then became part of the Universal Studio tour. The crashed plane looks so real because it was a real plane.
Me randomly realizing this really was a great movie. I saw it in theaters at 12-13, one of the most intense theater experiences ever. Dakota Fanning made this movie. Her fear was so real.
I had anxiety issues myself as a child so I could really empathize with Rachel. It’s really disturbing the amount of hate she gets, like there are people wishing death on a literal child just for being scared.
I never really understood what was actually going on in this scene, but was terrified nonetheless. I always thought the tripod lightning was striking nearby and that it hit the plane, because of the similar sound effects used for both. Then I realized it was tripods shooting down the plane. This scene is mesmerizing in that you have zero clue what is going on outside yet you're utterly terrified
I'm assuming that the plane was shot down from a distance because we don't hear the tripods themselves, but we hear their lazer weapons whizzing by just before the plane crashes. Also in the next morning we hear the distant horns of probably the same tripods that I'm assuming shot down the plane, now coming to finish off anyone who survived the crash.
Despite the laser's deadly effect and exploxion these was and the huge impact with the ground.... weak change that someone from the plane to be survived!
The news lady explained what happened that night in the next scene. The 83rd mechanized national guard unit engaged a tripod out in the pine barrens in the distance that night. She explained that every round they fired at the tripods were stoped by the shield. The sounds in this scene were actually the rounds blowing up from hitting the shield and the tripod firing back. The plane crash is still up for speculation but probably got caught up in the cross fire.
Funny enough one of my favorite scenes in the movie. They did a great job at establishing such tension because you have no idea what’s going on beyond those walls.
It's almost like the aircraft was pulled out of the sky before it was shot down. You can hear the engines straining for a minute before the plane actually crashes.

They preserved the plane crash site for exhibit on the universal Hollywood studios tour. I saw that site in real life. It shows how much work goes into set design for any production. What a thriller of a film
0:28 Something about the way that Robbie (Justin Chatwin) stands in front of Ray (Tom Cruise) is so epic. The movie hints at Robbie's youthful heroism thought the film and I thin kthis is another great example.
Those initial flashes at the start were Tri-pods trying to shoot the plane down and the frequency and amount of flashes kinda indicates just how many tri-pods are in the area. They may not be close to any of our main cast but its likely they are only 1 to 2 miles away, maybe less?
I say the plane wasn't shot down. The sounds as the flashes were happening is from the lightning. Remember at the beginning of the movie after the lightning flashed, all power, and communications were out and no one could drive, call, or use electricity. I believe the plane's systems got scrambled and shut down by the lightning leaving them all to helplessly plunge to the ground.
Towards the end just before the plane crashed it sounded like the engines were straining really hard as if the plane was fighting to stay airborne Such a terrifying sound to this day
Doubtful the plane had to been shot down as for planes can still glide for a period of time without power and fuel that plane came straight down like a meteor.
Man, even after knowing whats gonna happen, this scene just absolutely terrifies me , and that line from the kid in the pitch-black grave like scene, are we still alive? just genius!
this shit actually terrified me as a kid, the sound design along with just perfect timing and buildup. the lighting and just the way everything was put together was amazing.
I assume that this plane was already in the air before the aliens landed in the tripods. If the sun direction was indeed going west during the 'storm' on day 1, the aliens came into the tripods by afternoon. It could have been flying for twelve to fourteen hours already if it is midnight in this scene. Perhaps the plane crew were confused why communication was not possible with the airport towers and searched for another airport to land. If this was the only plane still flying after so many hours, because in the entire movie this was the only plane that was still up there, it must have come from either Europe or somewhere from the Pacific. When Ray fled with his children, Robbie even says on the highway why there were no helicopters or airplanes flying.
You missed the subtle hints that the lighning storm did not awaken all the tripods at the same time. Robbie is watching tv, where one channel says that Ukraine got hit by a lightning storm, followed by emp, followed by an earthquake, around 4am. Another channel is reporting a similar event from japan, before Ray shuts it off. Meaning that while they were playing baseball and while Ray was sleeping, the invasion had been going on for hours already. Not every city lost it's electricity, so maybe that plane was full of refugees from some city that heard about the alien attack? Imagine escaping to america from the invasion, only to find out that no place was safe.
