It's funny that Sean kept talking about the potential of a horror game based around echolocation and seeing only via sound, because there actually _is_ such a game already: _Stifled,_ a game with a similar visual aesthetic to this one but whose environment is only revealed by the sounds you make... which, of course, can also give away your hiding place to the monsters hunting you.

The quote about the void is based off a quote by Nietzsche. "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." Essentially a warning of do not become the evil you fight against. Also, the death quote "Where we're going. As a game dev generalist, the lidar mechanic is actually very easy to replicate, it's just spawning a particle or mesh from the hit point of randomly offset line traces. It would probably take a few hours to complete honestly. What makes it impressive and interesting though is that no-one had thought of/implemented the idea this well before which I applaud Steelkrill Studio for immensely. It should be common sense that it's not easy to come up with truly unique gameplay mechanics, but especially within the horror genre. Props to Ryan, much respect.
I love the house part cos it really shows how different a normal environment can look through the scanner. Really hammers in the point of you having absolutely no idea about your surroundings in the void
There's something so primally scary about a game like this because it lets you imagine what everything looks like, including the creature. I'd almost suggest having the intro itself cut to the lidar scan mode once the creature originally appears, just to leave it even more up to the players' imagination.

Y'know... it's been a long time.... But I really miss those people who'd post timestamps for horror games when jumpscares or scary stuff happen... They saved my soul back then...
Eh. Some jump scares don’t really get me if I’m looking directly at the screen. The only jump scare that got me from that elf horror game seán played was when I looked away from the screen because my dog was barking at something. And I looked back a second before the jump scare. It was when he was inserting a code into the keypad.
I Miss them, i just look at the comment section or minimize the vod on my phone screen to the top right corner and draw lol, I still can see stuff but I don’t get as scared.
The game Perception from several years ago was based on echolocation of every sound in a creepy mansion. It was among the first games I had seen with this kind of mechanic. I hope you try it out sometime!
That scanner's particle effect is done by making the device a particle emitter, and each particle will be programmed to glow for a period on contact with an element in the map. It's *relatively* simple in concept, although I imagine making it work as effectively as it does took a ton of work.
Did anyone else notice the house from 44:09 is the same layout template from "9th Child street"? - The living room with the television at 46:20. The stairs and the upper floor layout at 46:55 - 47:05. The room he enters at 47:09 is the same you start in "9th Child Street" I love this. Its awesome to recognise and amazing how its the same layout but looks still different
I've really been waiting the last 5 years for this, a Scanner Somber sequel. The premis of 'seeing' differently combined with the color contrast art design makes this a very cool stylized expirience for me.
I finally found the name of scanner sombre after looking for it for an hour. I just gave up and searched ‘Jack scary cave color game’ and got it. I was very excited to find that there are more games like somber
29:20 There are two games that are sound based. 1;STIFLED and 2;PERCEPTION. Stifled is a good horror game. Idk if perception is a horror game, but I would definitely recommend you to play them!
I love how the entity is invisible, only visible by those hand/foot prints on the floor, it reminds me of a BT from Death Stranding, an entity that would kill you on sight and you must hold your breath around it. I see all the features and what their possible inspos come from, I'm all for it Ryan (Steelkrill), keep creating!
Hey Jack, you were mentioning a game like this but audio based where every footstep you make sends a ripple allowing you to see surfaces. That game exists! It’s called STIFLED and it’s awesome
It's incredibly impressive how much they have expanded the game! It turned from a tech demo with no story into a big sci-fi survival in just a few months!
This is the only game Sean have ever played that makes me legitimately scared. Proves that the best way to scare yourself is to let your brain fill in the details.
It is nice but honestly I wouldn't expect him to do it that much. I recall he said once before the reason he doesn't is because his energy levels are not what they once were. Also side note and this one is less related but may hold some insight. On Anthony pedeas talk show he drops a "hot take" and says "people who say this miss the old jack? You don't miss the old jack you just miss the fact that everything was easier back then" or something like that. Should check it out. Very insightful and may sort of make you agree with why he stopped doing it.
loving the influx of long horror lets-plays you've been releasing lately! it brings me back to those classic jse channel vibes where we can all cozy up together under blankets with a warm drink and get ready to enjoy the spooks together!
Holy shit, the scanning is the single most amazing gameplay mechanic for making a game feel absolutely terrifying for every single second you are in the void! 😲
I got theory about the monsters suddenly appearing then disappearing...maybe they're 4 dimensional beings who, like some humans in our 3 dimensions, aren't very good at manoeuvring. So they're jumping around dimensions (or planes of existence - you get it), and they stumble into our ones, scaring the hell out of the player, then disappear.
The one thing that could make this worse is if you’d scan and just occasionally find the outline of some horrible monster clinging to the wall or ceiling
Jack, thank you SO much for posting so many horror playthroughs. I'm currently recovering from Covid and it's taken a great toll on my physical health, so vids like these really help me to pass time and cheer me up ❤
I imagine the reason the game periodically erases all of the particles is to prevent overloading the game and just making sure it runs smoothly in case you scan too much before they disappear on their own.
There’s also a game called the unfinished swan which is based of a similar idea, but you use paint to find your surroundings - it’s by the devs who made ‘what remains of Edith finch’
Awesome game, fantastic ending. Can't help but think another cool type of ending to have with this sort of mechanic is to have the player apparently safely return to Earth, but they get their hands on a scanner again and point it at the sky, only to find that it's filled with unseen horrors.
For any of you wondering, the quote at the beginning is a variation of the quote from Fredrich Nietzsche: "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
Being someone who wants to get more into voice acting, the performances from this one-man developed game is amazing and inspiring. Congrats Alex, Erym and Richard. And congrats to Ryan as well, this was a fantastic game.
Scanner Sombre and Stories Untold are some of my favorite small games jacks done on this channel. This brought a lot of memories back with the mechanics
This game is truly a work of art! Ryan, as a solo developer, created such a unique and interesting horror game that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It's so refreshing to see game developers taking the time to make sure their games are accessible to everyone, including those with color vision deficiencies and hearing impairments. The voice acting was absolutely phenomenal, and the emotions portrayed by the characters really added to the overall experience. I hope to see more games like this in the future, and I'm excited to see what Ryan has in store for us next. Thank you, Jack, for introducing us to this amazing game, and thank you, Ryan, for creating it.
You were talking about a game that would work sort of like this but sound-based, and I immediately thought of a game called Perception that did basically that, where the player character is a blind woman and the world is visualized through sound waves (tapping your cane would illuminate an area around you, dripping water or a radio would create their own area of visible surroundings, etc.). I thought it was really fascinating for the same reasons you were talking about here with the LiDAR.
I'm sure this will get buried, but for anyone curious, LiDARs are a real thing. They're used for some types of self-driving cars. Though they obviously work differently than they do in this game.
“Stifled” is a game very similar to what you were looking for at 29:35. Its a horror game where you have to make noise in order to see, you can play it in VR too.
29:23 Dark Echo is a great mobile game where each footstep causes sound and alerts monsters, just like Jack described. It's a really cool game, and I would highly recommend it!
29:23 There is an old mobile game, from long before the shovel-warepocalypse, called Dark Echo that's exactly like how you described. In Dark Echo you're in complete darkness but when you move around it makes sounds and sends out a bunch of lines that bounce around the environment. When you run the noise is louder and there are more lines that last longer. You can also stomp to create a large burst of sound to see. Water makes moving noisier and there are red monsters that you have to sneak around.
I love how similar the creation of this is to Iron Lung, being able to create a 3D but textureless environment that you can only explore and observe through the restriction the game puts on you. 1:00:04 Yeah like that
i have been on a binge spree watching all your videos for the past like 2 weeks now, its so nostalgic but also just wanted to say im so proud of you and everything you've accomplished! it's really cool to see how much you've grown. love watching ur videos n the great vibes you put into them, you're a light in a lot of peoples lives man. hope u have a wonderful day and thanks for the hour long vid man
29:24 "Imagine a game like this but with sound base, everystep you take is a ripple effect across the world" There's actually a game like that, it's called " Lurking" similar to this game where you have to use the scanner to see your environment, 'lurking' uses sound to see where you're going! recommend!

now i have to resort to the old faithful "focus on my cup of water or something with the screen in the corner of my eye when the jumpscare vibes come"
@@kirtil5177 bro oh my god 😭 i thought i was the only one doing this shit now that the jumpscare timestampers have gone extinct
Eh. Some jump scares don’t really get me if I’m looking directly at the screen. The only jump scare that got me from that elf horror game seán played was when I looked away from the screen because my dog was barking at something. And I looked back a second before the jump scare. It was when he was inserting a code into the keypad.
the responsibility has been passed on to you, my child
I Miss them, i just look at the comment section or minimize the vod on my phone screen to the top right corner and draw lol, I still can see stuff but I don’t get as scared.
If you listen real close, at 36:57 you can hear the enemy say "save me." Really cool game, glad Jack played it so I didn't have to.
I never noticed that!!!
The game Perception from several years ago was based on echolocation of every sound in a creepy mansion. It was among the first games I had seen with this kind of mechanic. I hope you try it out sometime!
He played a game with that mechanic but I can’t remember the name! It was really good too
Oooh yeah! I played that a bit, its really amazing!!! Seriously recommend!
Sean: "It would be reeallyy cool if the house merged with where we were before and-"
Game Dev: "Correct, that's why I did just that"
That scanner's particle effect is done by making the device a particle emitter, and each particle will be programmed to glow for a period on contact with an element in the map.
The room he enters at 47:09 is the same you start in "9th Child Street"
I love this. Its awesome to recognise and amazing how its the same layout but looks still different
Yeah!! Is totally the same house!
Probably used the same assets
I remember seeing this exact same asset as a Ready or Not custom map too
The house did seem familar
I've really been waiting the last 5 years for this, a Scanner Somber sequel. The premis of 'seeing' differently combined with the color contrast art design makes this a very cool stylized expirience for me.
I finally found the name of scanner sombre after looking for it for an hour. I just gave up and searched ‘Jack scary cave color game’ and got it. I was very excited to find that there are more games like somber
I can’t get over how good the sound design is in this game. Indie games are the BEST.
I live a simple life
When Sean plays a horror game
I click
29:20 There are two games that are sound based. 1;STIFLED and 2;PERCEPTION. Stifled is a good horror game. Idk if perception is a horror game, but I would definitely recommend you to play them!
And lurking.
@@TheWoah and lurking.
I will never get bored of Sean playing indie horror games
I love how the entity is invisible, only visible by those hand/foot prints on the floor, it reminds me of a BT from Death Stranding, an entity that would kill you on sight and you must hold your breath around it. I see all the features and what their possible inspos come from, I'm all for it Ryan (Steelkrill), keep creating!
I just got to the point of Jack pointing out how it was like Death Stranding, even better!
@@topcaattyeah hehehe
i knew jack *the* death stranding septiceye would mention it when i realized it, too!!
Hey Jack, you were mentioning a game like this but audio based where every footstep you make sends a ripple allowing you to see surfaces. That game exists! It’s called STIFLED and it’s awesome
"Is that my pelvis?! Are those my bones?!" I'm going to start using that every time I feel pain lol.
I love how youtube went form flash/horror games to long let's plays to indie/horror games
indie horror is so much more fun... New concepts and etc
It's incredibly impressive how much they have expanded the game! It turned from a tech demo with no story into a big sci-fi survival in just a few months!
Hopefully jack continues dredge! This game was amazing however, the voice acting was so haunting, that speech at the end had me amazed!
At 46:46, we hear BB outside Seán’s door confirming that it does indeed suck!
This is the only game Sean have ever played that makes me legitimately scared. Proves that the best way to scare yourself is to let your brain fill in the details.
Sean saying "WHAT THE BLOODY HELL" gave me more life than I ever thought possible.
Jack please do your old intro more often it never fails to make me smile, i grew up with that intro and it’s so nice hearing it in new episodes
HAHAHA miss the times. missing 11 years ago
Could you just IMAGINE doing this in VR?! X.X
Good lord…
Fuck that I don't want Jack to have a heart attack
If they make VR they better make it support multiplayer otherwise they should just rename the game pant shitting simulator
WHY YOU JUST MADE ME THINK HOW CREEPY IT IS IN VR WHY!!!!!
well cant be as bad as something like cry of fear in vr , id probably cant get past the intro
With Jack's love of cosmic horror and sci-fi stuff, I really hope we'll get to see him play Signalis one day
Holy shit, the scanning is the single most amazing gameplay mechanic for making a game feel absolutely terrifying for every single second you are in the void! 😲
Jack playing 3 horror games in a row is actually insane.
I really hope he plays more of Dredge :(
I really loved it.
But, great video as always Jackaboy!
I love how things just pop out out of nowhere like jack's previous video, dredge, where they're either illusions or the real thing
Ngl this concept is thrilling and horrifying at the same time. I love it.
Concept? SCANNER SOMBRE did it first and they did it quite a while ago
The one thing that could make this worse is if you’d scan and just occasionally find the outline of some horrible monster clinging to the wall or ceiling
Jack, thank you SO much for posting so many horror playthroughs. I'm currently recovering from Covid and it's taken a great toll on my physical health, so vids like these really help me to pass time and cheer me up ❤
What a game. I loved the storyline, the twist, and the overall aesthetic. It was done so well, especially with how unique it is.
Im 18 now and I've been watching your channel for over a decade, thank you for everything jack. We love you
I imagine the reason the game periodically erases all of the particles is to prevent overloading the game and just making sure it runs smoothly in case you scan too much before they disappear on their own.
More DREDGE gameplay please! I've been eagerly checking every day hoping for more. Are you planning on doing a series for it? :)
There’s also a game called the unfinished swan which is based of a similar idea, but you use paint to find your surroundings - it’s by the devs who made ‘what remains of Edith finch’
I loved Unfinished Swan, that was a really cool game
Awesome game, fantastic ending. Can't help but think another cool type of ending to have with this sort of mechanic is to have the player apparently safely return to Earth, but they get their hands on a scanner again and point it at the sky, only to find that it's filled with unseen horrors.
I cannot stress enough how much I love the concept of this game
"Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze in to the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you" - Friedrich Nietzsche
For any of you wondering, the quote at the beginning is a variation of the quote from Fredrich Nietzsche: "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
Jack's the kind of guy who goes to the therapist and solves the therapist's trauma
Being someone who wants to get more into voice acting, the performances from this one-man developed game is amazing and inspiring. Congrats Alex, Erym and Richard. And congrats to Ryan as well, this was a fantastic game.
tired? kinda sad? stressed? no fear, jack is here.
Jack is on a horror game streak and I’m ALL for it
You were talking about a game that would work sort of like this but sound-based, and I immediately thought of a game called Perception that did basically that, where the player character is a blind woman and the world is visualized through sound waves (tapping your cane would illuminate an area around you, dripping water or a radio would create their own area of visible surroundings, etc.). I thought it was really fascinating for the same reasons you were talking about here with the LiDAR.
Good thing I wasn't the only one ^^
I'm sure this will get buried, but for anyone curious, LiDARs are a real thing. They're used for some types of self-driving cars. Though they obviously work differently than they do in this game.
Watching Gab's dredge video and her commenting on how she heard Sean's looooong scream while playing his horror game 😂😭 SHE DOES HEAR HIM LMAO
Probably weird to say but Jack's looking extra dreamy in today's vid lol
“Stifled” is a game very similar to what you were looking for at 29:35. Its a horror game where you have to make noise in order to see, you can play it in VR too.
The game as a whole definitely gives me John Carpenter's "The Thing" vibes. Specially when the creature roars at you.
I imagine doing this in VR would be insane. Vision is like 90% of your information source, and the game takes it away from you. Pure nightmare fuel
the voice acting and graphics were pretty damn good for an indie horror game :0 very excited for the future of this game
Can we just talk about the amazing drip on Sean for this recording today? 💯💖
The dangly earring 🤌🏻🤌🏻
29:23 Dark Echo is a great mobile game where each footstep causes sound and alerts monsters, just like Jack described. It's a really cool game, and I would highly recommend it!
29:23 There is an old mobile game, from long before the shovel-warepocalypse, called Dark Echo that's exactly like how you described. In Dark Echo you're in complete darkness but when you move around it makes sounds and sends out a bunch of lines that bounce around the environment. When you run the noise is louder and there are more lines that last longer. You can also stomp to create a large burst of sound to see. Water makes moving noisier and there are red monsters that you have to sneak around.
jack’s earring looks SO COOL holy fuck
I am LIVING for the influx of spooky videos lately!
I love how similar the creation of this is to Iron Lung, being able to create a 3D but textureless environment that you can only explore and observe through the restriction the game puts on you.
1:00:04 Yeah like that
Sean is an good player during horror games.
i have been on a binge spree watching all your videos for the past like 2 weeks now, its so nostalgic but also just wanted to say im so proud of you and everything you've accomplished! it's really cool to see how much you've grown. love watching ur videos n the great vibes you put into them, you're a light in a lot of peoples lives man. hope u have a wonderful day and thanks for the hour long vid man
29:24 "Imagine a game like this but with sound base, everystep you take is a ripple effect across the world"
There's actually a game like that, it's called " Lurking" similar to this game where you have to use the scanner to see your environment, 'lurking' uses sound to see where you're going! recommend!
an hour long video of jack playing a scary game. my day instantly got better
