    I remember when WestJet started in the 90's they were modelled after SouthWest employing only one type of aircraft to save cost. I didn't really occur to me how much WJ grew their fleet outside the 737's.
    I find the range of the C series, given its size, quite impressive.

  • @TheDrew2022
    @TheDrew2022 4 роки тому +14

    One thing I think factors into this is the type rating. The wide-bodies and the turoprops aside, it's easier to move pilots around on routes if your fleet is all 737-X series aircraft. The -600 through -900 (non-max) are considered the same type for pilot certification so a pilot could fly a -600 one day, a -900 another, and a -700 a third day as they're the same aircraft essentially. Add in this C series into that, and you lose flexibility because a pilot has to fly a certain type all the time, he can't fly a Dash-8 one day and a 737 the next.

    I love this aircraft, both from an Above Wing and Below Wing perspective. I work for a certain carrier that has quite a few of these now down south in the US. While the C Series has some teething issues right now. That will clear up once the supply chain gets caught up. Weight and balance is sometimes an issue but with the MTOW changes I believe this is helping. Having worked it as a Gate Agent, this planes 2/3 seating makes accommodating families a bit easier. Especially when seating groups of 3, 4, or 5. The Middle seats are wider then the others on the aircraft so the comfort levels are good even for middle people. Boarding is quick, no need to check carry on's as ample bin space, its great.
    Working it now from as a Ramp Agent, the aircraft is quiet. Super quiet, you can barely hear the thing taxing into the gate sometimes, which is scary when you think about it. Loading and unloading is pretty easy, and pretty quick. You don't feel cramp when in the bins like a 738/9 or Mad Dog so you are not killing your knees and back as much. It has the wide bin spaciousness feeling like on Airbuses. It high enough off the ground so its easy to connect ground air. The aircraft's APU is so efficient that during turns, ground power is not connected because it cost more to use ground power then to using the APU.
    For passengers it is a pleasant ride with large onboard entertainment screens and jet engines so quiet. You wonder if you are even flying. Reminds me of the old 727s. Incredibly proud of what Bombardier was able to build. The C Series is such a game changer, but its a shame that every thing happened the way it did. An aircraft meant to help break up the duopoly is now the future star gem of Airbus.

      My fictional airline would start out with old used aircraft such as the MD-80's from AA that they just retired and outright purchase them since they are really cheap, and use the money saved on completely refurbishing them with D-checks, and modern upgrades to the cockpit/avionics and interior, and fly them for about 10-15 years so the airline can quickly build up a route network and eventually replace them with new airplanes. My airline would basically have the fleet plans of Allegiant Air but the business model kind of like jetBlue (except it wouldn't be a LCC and would be all-premium-economy with free in-flight services and entertainment)
      My airline's current fleet planes would include:
      Ultra-Long Haul: 767
      Long-Haul: 757
      Mainline: MD-80
      Regional-Long: Fokker F70/F100
      Regional-Medium: Beech 1900C/D, Shorts 330/360, Dash-8
      Regional-Short: Cessna 208B Grand Caravan
      Future New Aircraft Potential Replacements:
      Ultra-Long Haul: 787-8 Dreamliner or 767X (hypothetical re-engined 767 with GEnx-2B67's and 767-400 landing gear + wings)
      Long-Haul: 737-8ERX, A321XLR, 797/NMA, or 767X (hypothetical re-engined 767 with GEnx-2B67's and 767-400 landing gear + wings)
      Mainline: E-Jet-E2, A220, 737 MAX, or 797/FSA
      Regional-High: E-Jet-E2 or A220
      Regional-Low: DHC-6-400 Twin Otter, ERJ, E-Jet-E2, or Dash-8 NextGen
      Regional-Thin: Cessna 208B Grand Caravan (new builds)
      As you can tell I'm somewhat of a Boeing fan, as the A220 and A321XLR are really the only planes I _really_ like from Airbus and would fit well with my hypothetical airline.

    A220 would make a huge difference for WestJet. Excellent in flight product & with that airlines popularity growing year by year, they’ll need to make the upgrade off the -600s and -700s. I think it’ll happen, but not for a few more years, of course.

  • @adamp.3739
    @adamp.3739 4 роки тому +8

    I'll say that they should for the following reasons:
    1. They're adding a brand-new, clean-sheet design jet into their fleet
    2. Despite the additional maintenance + crew training costs, the new, more efficient engines will recoup the cost pretty quickly
    3. A brand-new, spacious cabin would increase comfort, which is ESPECIALLY in demand these days and drive up passenger numbers
    I mean, the A220/CSeries has proven to be very popular with passengers ever since it entered service, so I see absolutely no reason to not introduce the jet into WestJet's fleet, not gonna lie.

    Hey Alex, I’m Jack Cameron. I got my mom to text you about that scanner that you use for plane spotting remember? I told you that I’ve been following you since you flown on WestJet’s inaugural 787-9 Dreamliner? Regarding the Airbus A220 [Bombardier C Series], I have sent an email out to WestJet’s current CEO Ed Sims on that particular aircraft. And I talked about the history of it. Now you are going to want to know about the history of how the C series came together and,, how the program had been taken over manufacturing, this aircraft.
    So basically the story is about the competition between Boeing and and Bombardier, it all started when Bombardier wanted to create a narrow body Aircraft that is as large as a 737-600NG which would be capable of competing with the little models like the Airbus A319Neo and the Boeing 737-600NG. In 2017, Boeing did not like the fact that the new C Series tips on the tale of the Boeing 737 MAX, and sued Bombardier for dumping on sales in the United States for carriers like Delta, and JetBlue. And even regarding the trade of aggressive production, The FAA decided whether or not that the C Series would be sold to Longview aviation. Originally, the C-Series was planned to be sold to Boeing in 2018, but even then, Boeing still wasn’t interested in taking over manufacturing the new C series so that’s when, The next thing you know, instead the C-Series was sold to Airbus as you know.

    One thing to mention is that (again, other than the widebodies) WestJet flies all 737s for the NB fleet to not only keep maintenance costs down but also pilot training costs. All pilots are trained on the same aircraft so it is easier to schedule and also costs less as pilots aren't switching types when equipment bids come out.
    I would love to see the A220 at WS, I just flew it on AC the other day and it was great! Other than the IFE screens not working on a brand new airplane. I am a widebodied guy myself and I definitely appreciate the wider seats especially compared to the tiny 737!

    As stated, the CSeries would be redundant and inefficient fleet wise vs staying with the same manufacturer. WestJet could use a regional jet for Encore to help boost some business routes. A 90 seat aircraft would be a good sweet spot to operate Toronto - Boston or a Calgary to Seattle route in the future.

      The smaller A220-100 could replace the aging 737-600's and -700's when their time to retire comes up somewhat soon. Boeing's 737 Max is mostly the -8 and -9 variants, so the Max would have more seats than those older 737's.

    0:20 well, the E-jets E2 dont have a 2-3 configuration, I personally rather to seat in a 2-2 configuration than having wider seats. Let's just say that seating in the middle row is not for me. Point for the E-JET.

    • @erictremblay4940
      @erictremblay4940 4 роки тому

      Well, only 20% of the A220 seats are the middle ones. Which is ok as sometime people travels in family - thus 3 seats together is then usefull.
      But hey, better than 2X2 is 1X1, right? Why not travel on a PC-12 or better, a business jet?
      At some point, you have to balance out CASM and comfort to achieve the optimal mix. I believe the A220 achieved it (when we compare the A220 order book versus the E2s)

      @ifp stop motions
      Let's say the A220 appears to have a much brighter future (# of sales, # of installed OEM approved maintenance outfits etc) than the whole E2 line up.
      The engine problem you're talking about has been solved by P&W via a software update. (Was some kind of "reasonnance" situation in a specific power settings/altitude etc). FWIW, Delta still ordered additional A220 while in full knowledge of this situation.
      The E190/E195E2s are indeed great planes, but are more like an RJ in term of comforts (narrower seats despite being 4 abreast, smaller windows, smaller bins) and range. But if an airline needs a smaller range aircraft for much "thinner" routes, then the E2 is the winner due to cheaper trip costs (not CASM) and cheaper purchase price.
      For longer routes, then the A223 wins in both CASM and capability/flexibility. Also the A220 can be a good complement to A320/321s on off-peak hours due to having a somewhat simillar range.

    A few things they could do is retire the SAAB 340's simply because they are 25 year plus aircraft, and replace them with the Q400. The Q400 does well in the lower demand routes, and if they also Combi those aircraft they could haul cargo in them. The A220 honestly fills the majority of the domestic needs of West Jet, as well as flights to the USA. I think it would be short sighted if WestJet doesn't consider it, because the A220 could be acquired faster than the MAX. I think they may consider it if the MAX continues to remain grounded.

    Well, it seems a decent plane with huge savings for short-/medium-haul flights and pax like it a lot, it's spacious and has huge windows..Air Baltic flies it on RIX-AUH which is a 7h flight with a 145pax config. And they could juggle between the two models, CS100/CS300 depending on the needs of the airline..On the other hand, Boeing has targeted Embraer for buy-out, and the E2-195 is also a very good replacement, it's also lighter and cheaper..Azul flies it on a 136config. but its range is shorter compared..2600nm vs 3350nm of the CS300..If they do need the range then they should go for it..It's a fantastic little plane and God knows when the MAX will fly again..Plus, with the slump in bookings and predictions saying it's gonna take a couple of years to get back to the pre-covid19 levels of traffic, i think sth. fuel efficient with smaller capacity is gonna be needed..The big BUT here is the large number of owned 737s, which i dont know if they are going to be in a hurry to replace them, although other airlines are announcing accelerated retirement of older aircraft or not that fuel-efficient..LH,UA,DL etc..

    You forgot to compare the 220 with the Dash-8. When Westjet was a low cost all coach carrier, expanding network with Dash-8s was fine. But with Westjet eying becoming a standard airline, the dash-8 is a hindrance to grow Montréal-Toronto, especially as it uses gates on satellite terminal at YYZ-T3 with very long walks to connect to "real" flights.
    The 220 could allow business class and hopefully use of gates in main terminal, allowing Westjet to steal traffic from Air Canada.
    Even if the 737 MAX requires different pilot certification, I suspect the cross certification between 737 and MAX variants will be fairly simple, so easier for pilots to remain current on both and fly both in a month, which greatly simplifies crew assignments/planning.
    Introducing the 220 would mean introduction of a new class of pilots with all the overhead of needing spare pilots, separate training etc.
    What remains to be seen is what will be left of the airline industry post COVID. If demand shrinks big time, then the 220 might become a better fit than the bigger 737s IF high frequency is maintained. Otherwise, with lower frequencies, the larger 737s and perhaps A321 might become the desirable aircraft.
    What is certain is that the delayed deliveries of the 737 MAX is no longer an issue for airlines who now sit on a glut of unused capacity and certaintly don't need to grow fleet. However, once 737 MAX restarts, airlines flying older 737s will want to get their new MAX for fuel efficiency reasons. (as opposed to growing fleet).
    Also important to note that Air Canada didn't want to buy the C-Series, it was forced to buy it as a way to get out of violating its charter when it closed its Winnipeg maintenance base. In exchange for buying the C-Series the government dropped its lawsuit and Bombardier was to build a maintenance base in Winnipeg to bring Air Canada back in compliance.
    With AC's C-Series configured with charter class seat pitch, they are as unenticing as its new 737s. .
    Will be interesting to see if airlines feel a need to start to attract passengers at which point, bringing back normal 32" seat pitch might become interesting when demand is low enough that 32" seat pitch decreases costs (weight of empty seats in aircraft).
    I really hope Viking/de Havilland Canada manages to emerge from this as a winner. Having this crisis happen just as they start to want to bring back what Bombardier had abandonned for years is going to be rough. They are working to restyart production and get contracts on water bombers (wordking to develop CL-415 and offering the upgrades from 215 to 415 that Bombardeir had refused to offer, restarted productio of the Twin Otter, and now got responsibility to restart the Dash-8 sales.
    One last aspect: Bombardier/Airbus were unable to productize the A220 production and are still stuck are very low production rates. Westjet ordering them today would not get deliveries for quite some time. This was one reason Bombardier had to hand over its remaining 30% of the project to Airbus for pennies because it was unable to invest to increase production. Airbus was to increase prioduction after getting the now abandonned CRJ production hangars at Mirabel, but not sure now if this will happen post COVID.
    Bombardier Aviation first near-bankruptcy happened after 9/11 when it bragged about not lowering the huge CRJ-200 production rate it had while both Boeing and Airbus immediatly annoucne production rate cuts. Instead of admitting the mistake, it forced a strike a year later to force production to stop (Delta CRJs had been built and on tarmac at Dorval even though Delta had cancelled orders). AND more importantly, to bail it out, the Beaudoin family injected cash into Bombardier by buying the Bombardeir Recreation (skidoos and seadoos) from Bombardier in a form of recapitalisation. (with existing shareholder not getting any benefit).
    So the outcome of COVID19 is far from being known at this point. There are even talks of Boeing going chapter 11, or the US government buying a large chunk of it as a form of cash injection (like it did fo car companies in 2008/2009 and for Chrysler years before).

    Yes! WestJet should consider the A220 variants. Airlines are still looking at the B737 MAX and it's variants. It's a plane that will fly again, sooner than later. It's only problem, is that it is a modified aircraft, from a very similar aircraft, instead of a brand new design, from the ground up. Airbus has other models, that might work, as well. It's hard to say. Air travel is growing. The airline industry will come back, bigger and stronger, than before.

    It could do depending on how Boeing is going to survive the fall out of the COVID global recession and what will be the public back lash to the B737 MAX once it is re-certified. I do agree with you, the A220-300 would be good replacement for the B737-600 and B737-700 and if Airbus goes ahead with the A220-500. It will be interesting.

    I haven't flown on the A220 yet but I'm a huge fan of Air Canada's A320s. I prefer them over Westjet's 737s in general. At least as far as economy class goes. I definitely prefer Westjet as an operator although I have been impressed a lot more with Air Canada lately. I'd personally like to see Airbus Aircraft join the Wesjet fleet but I think you're right. It's not likely to happen any time soon.

    I'm actually surprised an ULCC hasn't gone with an all A220-300 fleet. They are considerably more fuel efficient than the a320 or 737, can fly to the typical ULCC destinations, and can seat 160 people in economy style seating.

    I'll say yes but it probably wouldn't be for another 10-15 years. AC has so pretty old Airbuses they own themselves. I'd expect them to push the life span to 25-30 years if anything

    I think the CSeries/A220 will find a place in the WS fleet but not for a while. It is clear that the 737MAX will be the final iteration of the 737, so WestJet will have to move to another aircraft eventually for that segment of the market. If Airbus moves from the A320neo to a potential A220-500 keeping the A321neo for middle-of-market customers, how will Boeing respond? At that point, WestJet might very well move to the Mirabel-built aircraft. It's not like the A220 is going to be out of production anytime soon, so time will tell.

  • @BPanio
    @BPanio 4 роки тому

    They'll need something for sure. Those NG's will eventually need to be replaced and a lot of the markets the 600/700 fly too probably couldn't support the max7 if they wanted to keep the routes daily. It's just sad there's nothing in that market except the A220, which while it would be a nice addition, it'd be a very expensive one as well

      A220s would be the perfect plan B for AC in case the Max doesn't fly anymore - or that nobody wants to fly it.
      (Loads are getting very light, and the 737 Max 8 is probably now too much of an airplane for what AC intended to use it for)

    No. Simple answer is that they cant afford to. Look at Encore, how many Qs they bought and how many are in storage now because they couldn't keep up with the operating costs. Personally view, Encore attempted to compete with Jazz in my region and they had to pull out. We first operated a CRJ200 as a headstart 530am flight to YHZ it was 99.999% of the time full. They axed the RJ in our Region so WJ Encore decided to put a Q on, it would get anywhere from 4-30 passengers. So they pulled out, Jazz came back with the Q and were consistently full up until Covid-19. Months before this, they had a Q coming in at 1015am we had an RJ coming in 1020am both flights to YHZ. Jazz consistently full while Encore could get 25-50 alot of which were over booked from Jazz. Their numbers only slightly increased when Jazz pulled the RJ and were using a DH8-3 for this run prior to the Q.
