Everyone including Herbie is watching in awe at Ronald Bruner's drumming. Except his brother. Thundercat's just like 'yeah, we do this in the basement every Sunday when we visit mum and dad' - whilst playing ridiculous riffs on the bass. How good must this night have been!
Really ? Nah, Ronalds drumming was messy, unfocused and uncontrolled. Like a 12 yr old that cant hide his excitement. Thats okay bc this is a jam session. But to claim Herbie was in awe ? Herbie played with the best of the best and Ronald dont fit in neither category.
@@yellfire when Ronald wants to stay in the groove he does. But yeah his fills/chops are wild as hell, the solo in lotus and the jondy live is wild. But that doesn’t mean he’s bad that’s just his style, like it doesn’t matter if it’s messy if he’s landing on 1 every time he finishes.
No one was in awe of him here. Ronald is known in the industry with the nickname “song ruiner”. I hosted a jam night upstairs at Ronnie Scott’s in London, where he was playing for Chaka Khan downstairs. He sat in during their set break and played like a toddler getting acquainted with his limbs. This is further evidence that “Song Ruiner” lived up to his name, in the presence of greatness - Herbie MF Hancock.

Learned from best but have entirely their own sounds.
Herbie Hancock is one of those natural musicians, that when he enters the stage his presence is so powerful that sets all the other musicians on fire and gets the best of them.
Thank you, my dude! It's such an amazing time to be living in Los Angeles if you're into this kinda music so I'm just trying to capture as many of these little magical moments as I can, for posterity.
Herbies approach to jazz is something that can also be applied to everyday life. He is open to the moment, without judgement or criticism whatever comes next you move with. I learned this from his autobiography which I highly recommend. I think it is this philosophy and set of beliefs that has made him a timeless figure who is embraced and enables him to embrace all who come after him. God bless you Herbie Hancock.
asderc1 Herbie has played with some of the best drummers of the last several generations and always has them on his records. He’s been known to give them love and space to cook it up. He drops his bombs in there like a bop drummer drops on the snare...
That drummer is kicking it and comping aling with the band and Herbie in particular. Comping is a skill all in itself. Funk cats should take note of what comping really is. ! Helps to know tbe music not just tbe drum or bass parts
I keep coming back to this because of the beginning. That crowd reaction for the first notes + chord! When he starts playing - it's 100% HIM! There's a reason people say nobody sounds like Herbie - because it's true. His playing is a master class every time.
06:23 when that second dude hit the tom for Bruner lmao. I cried tears of joy witnessing this, that was seriously magic. I'm tryna connect to what they reached in that room that session.
Literally was just thinking about how much I'd love to see thundercat and bruner Jr play together, then I see this, with Herbie Hancock as well! Made my day
I hold on to the slim hope that science will find the key to immortality while Herbie is still with us so that humanity can enjoy his genius for eternity 😁. Been listening to Herbie for 40+ years and *never* get tired of hearing him.
Well, don't be jealous :-) -- I was too young to see him then, but my mom had the Headhunters album. It was an 8-track, so it just looped over and over. Was my first introduction to Herbie, and have been a fan ever since.
I feel like we witnessed something cataclysmic after that first comp chord from Herbie, like he just opened a black hole or tore space-time with it. Something in that parallel level of jazz theory
For real man. Herbie just has something magical about him. Statements about "no one is better than him" are always a bit harsh, but his playing has something veryyy few people can get close to imo.
This is... the most overwhelmingly, amazing vibe session. It hurts so good, eargasms and tears.. Herbie too damn smooth the bruner brothers ..just too much can't compute....can't compute 6:00 OMFG ❤❤❤
Just stumbled upon his video.... Sweet goodness!! I had to watch this video several times! I felt like I was there vibin! everyone on stage are Legends... Literally
There are far too many legends on that stage. There needs to be a limit. My eargasms are now becoming quite painful, and my face has arthritis from all the expressions I've pulled.
I'd love to see the whole thing. With actually of a minimal amount of playing Herbie manages to coax the maximum amount of effort out of these players just by the virtue of being Herbie Hancock. I love Herbie.
Indeed! And their younger brother Jameel was in The Internet for a while. He's a great keyboardist. And their dad Ron Sr. is also a great jazz drummer in his own right. Their family is insanely gifted.
4:40-5:20 ish…. Oh my gawd this is what I love for, these moments caught in a jam improv setting, it’s hard to say any “composition” even comes close, this is a conversation, no script, it’s gorgeous… this is HeavyJazz!!! Damn the best
I get physically aroused by Herbies playing. Foreal tho he has some sort of magical aura lifting the whole performance, everyone gets insanely creative and alert once he mingles in. I cant believe how many amazing moments these guys put together in this video alone
Esto es hermoso e increíble! Glasper es la continuación de la escuela de Hanckok...y en este video parece como Glasper lo respeta y como Hanckok le da su bendición! viva la musica!!!!!!
I love how Thundercat is just nonchalantly rocking a bathrobe while killin' the bass. haha. Love that guy. He is the personification of freedom.
It's so him though
That Huge talent saved him from being just another clown
literally just vibin'
04:30 on - special - Bruner & Herbie locked ;).
@Chi Funk a dragon ball
i want herbie and thundercat to play my birthday party
Step 1: be Robert Glasper
i want herbie and thundercat to play at my funeral
they are coming to Montreal next month!!!
fukingmac damn daddy

herbie has been the hippest piano player for 55 years...
Herbie plays for two seconds, and EVERYONE, including the band, gets lifted. This is f'n beautiful.

@Ryan Hunziker no fucking way

Herbie Hancock is one of those natural musicians, that when he enters the stage his presence is so powerful that sets all the other musicians on fire and gets the best of them.
The dude even played a Mozart Concerto with the Chicago Symphony when he was 12.
Nossa, vc fez o melhor comentário, concordo plenamente 👏

Buddhist
That's because Miles Davis caught him there are no wrong notes in music. You just have to keep your ears open.
What's the name of the autobiography?
@@ttai7192 I believe it's called Possibilities
..so now I gotta read Herbie's book...oh well, I got Time.#jazzbo

Herbie once said that when he closes his eyes and hear Patrice Rushen play he swears she sounds like him.
Thundercat’s bass lines make this shit sick tho
1:16 Bruner on drums in genius. That comping was SICK. He even got the look of approval by Glasper
3:08 Glad that Glasper is getting Herbie to play Rhodes again.

Chris Dave is legally allowed to play a note on any tom-tom in the U.S.
I'm late, but this the best comment I've ever read
This is honestly the best drumming I’ve ever heard from Ronald Bruner Jr. yet
Rock on!

Bruner Jr. is literally his drummer during tours and sometimes in studio
Herbie and the Bruner Bros just straight crushing. They need an album.
