    That happened to the charger I bought for my Kindle. It showed no warning signs it just peacefully blew out DED. It didn't fall apart, didn't break in half (in fact it didn't break at all), didn't heat up and melt, it just went out; the one I'm using the head that went into the device looked like it was gonna fall off the hard plastic part was easily separatable and I had to put tape on it the bottom line: I'm impressed to see that the white one still works after all that.

      lithium reacts with water like that : 2Li + 2H2O-> 2Li(oh) + H2 .Lithium in reaction with water produces hydrogen which reacts with atmospheric oxygen : 2H2 + O2 + ( high temperature that is the result of the previous reaction)-> 2H2O. That reaction is very abrupt and thats what causes the ,,explosion".

    Keep in mind that everything shown here is usually mitigated by protection circuitry and more. And even then, the reactions are not that fast etc.
    For example the tesla car that burned down while charging had more than enough time to tell the driver that there is a problem and tell them to leave the car.

    • @noonespecial9131

    • @mandernachluca3774
      @mandernachluca3774 5 років тому +3

      That's not the problem, Tesla batteries have the problem of reigniting after three quaters of an hour with temperatures of over 1000 c° ( like demonstrated in the video). Now imagine a crash of two Tesla cars, you need routhly an hour to rescue the victims, clear the area and at least put the damaged car out of the way. There are no protection circuits for that. Ev, at least at the moment, are a huge fire hazard after a crash, that's one of the reasons why i wait to buy an EV until the batteries improved. I know that they experiment with ceramic batteries that are much safer, even without protection citcuit.

    • @incandescentwithrage
      @incandescentwithrage 5 років тому +1

      @@mandernachluca3774 Yes but ceramic batteries have a lot of energy density to make up for, compared to lithium ion.

      Yeah and hydrogen has a higher energy density than gasoline or diesel, still a lot less people bother investing in it. There are more factores than just energy density to consider.

    • @Basement-Science
      @Basement-Science 5 років тому +1

      Yes, there is a risk that batteries can ignite long after a crash, however the risks of fire may actually be higher in a gasoline car. Those burn down every day, but most people don´t seem to care about that.
      I don´t know if there are reliable statistics yet, but the way I see it, Tesla cars are at least not much different in terms of fire hazard compared to other cars.
      Of course this is something to look at in each electric car. Many other manufacturers don´t use 18650 cells, but plastic encased cells ( usually incorrectly referred to as LiPo). Those are surely a much bigger risk as far as I can see.

  • @Menalix

    It's actually quite scary in terms of you can get countless of these batteries on to a flight. I've had 5 e-cigs with me, with batteries plus two extra batteries (phone, phone laptop and camera aswell with battery) last time I flew. Then you need to find something like a glass bottle from a parfume or beer in the airport, and you can make like 3-6 glass grenades on the toilet.... creepy.

Well i have been trapped in a burning gasoline car , the moment the car caught fire in the engine bay after the crash, it took about 5 minutes till the fire spread to the gas tank, probably through the stupid plastic fuel lines... all 4 doors would not open and i could see the fire but was not able to get loose. the moment the fuel tank started to burn i smell burn plastic and lot of smoke,5 minutes had passed more or less...then the backseat caught fire and after that yes its too fast to escape once the uphosltery catches fire. so i would be more concerned about inside fires due to electrical harness than gasoline fires outside the vehicle. when the backseat caught fire i got a huge adrenaline burst and got myself loose, punched and smashed the window with bare hands and got out. i took less that 30 seconds and by that time the roof liner was already on fire. gasoline lines dont run inside the car and the only reason the car caught fire inside was the stupid plastic cover for the fuel pump... gasoline also does not explode in a crash unless very odd and specific conditions are met (atomization and spark) correct atomization for explosion is very difficult to be obtained with a liquid fuel.... Batteries when they ignite they seem to do it very violently leaving little chance to escape unharmed.
    in the 50's carburetted cars often had fuel leaks and caught fire...then in the 60's and 70's they started making them more reliable...by the 90's vehicle fires were very rare...nowadays with the immense wiring harnesses and engine covers made of plastic and sponge to isolate noises, even an oil leak can cause a fire and nowadays in the peak of summer , if i go in 500km trip i see maybe 2 to 5 fresh marks on the floor of cars that burned recently on the highway. And when i get the chance to see the actual burned vehicle they are mostly less that 10years old . That tells alot about todays "on the edge of failure" type of engineering....Engineers today when they need a material to withstand 500ºc they use a 500ºc rated material, engineers back then would use a 1500ºC rated material...the same about wire gauge, electronic componentry, etc
    Cars have improved a lot in terms of structural integrity and efficiency, in engines the major improvements have been better mettalurgy, better machining tolerances and the advances in rubber industry allowing for better gaskets and seals... the rest of the components in a car have been getting worse and worse..INstead of a beefy realy they use a fancy control module to turn on your headlights...they widely use plastics and sponge in and near the engine , the interior has much more sponge and upholstery than old cars, wiring runs everywhere even inside the seats themselves.

      and with the quantity of daily crashes there are almost 0 fires from minor and moderate car crashes. .. but with EV's the battery is fixed to the car frame. minor and moderate structural damage can fuck up the battery pack and cause a chain reaction.

    • @MrHBSoftware
      @MrHBSoftware 5 років тому +1

      @@zarthemad8386 yes i am a mechanic and i would dare to say that 99% of vehicle fires today happen due to oil leaks,because of the sponge crap aroud the engine bay mixed with overheating or electrical issues while driving or even parked at night...catalitic converters near the engine and particle filters also pose a danger if fitted too near the engine or near flammable insulation......
      a fire due to an accident is very rare....and on a car loaded wiith these batteries i would dare to say that even a big pothole could cause that...there are tons of big potholes in suburban areas in many countries, other example would be a distracted driver hitting a speedbump at high speed.and dont forget about children strpped in the backseat and modern cars dont even have pure mechanical door locks, some have very weird and complicated lock designs so you either smash the window or you die and watch others die beacuse the stupid fancy locking mechanism got you trapped inside. windows are also smaller and at a much higher level from ground that most old compact cars, window glass probably is stronger etc..it all poses problems when its time to extract someone from the vehicle fast.

In 2019 a fire believed to have originated in a group of lithium batteries from cameras, phones and dive lights that were charging overnight caught fire leading to the sinking of the vessel and the death of all 34 people sleeping below decks.

      Firsttly, maybe the statistics regarding Autopilot safety are a bit on the positive side. Okay. But just look it up, Tesla model S, X and 3 are the safest cars (crash ratings) in the world. www.theverge.com/2018/9/20/17882634/tesla-model-3-nhtsa-five-star-safety-rating www.tesla.com/de_DE/blog/tesla-model-s-achieves-best-safety-rating-any-car-ever-tested drivemag.com/news/how-safe-are-tesla-cars-5-facts-and-myths-explained
      Oh and one more thing, just because a BMW M3 has higher fatality numbers than a normal sedan does not mean the car is less safe. It shows that different drivers choose different cars and if someone decides to read a magazine while driving on autopilot or does not react even if a warning comes up, he is just acting stupid.

    • @Z-Ack
      @Z-Ack 5 років тому +1

      Safest car per crash rating? Nope. Try a smart car. Those little fuckers can hit a metal wall going 130mph and the cab still be totally intact like a shell. But no matter what car or what protection is there, unless you can defy physics law of attaction than your stomach would dropkick your tonsils and you would eat your buttcheek at the same time from the sudden change in motion. Would be like 500 g or whatever. But testla. No dice on safest car. Plus the turnaround and milage maintenance are non existant just because of how unsafe they are. They had a recall with their contactors one year and deales refused to work tochange them out like any other recall would. On top of that they deemed it against all warrantees if anybody other than the dealer change them. So those sorry fuckers who spent over 70k on those cars were calling elon asking for rides...

      Yeah but the difference is gas atleast dont self explode as battery do over time. So i rather take my chances with fuel than actual batteries. To make gas burn you have to try more. Like shooting gas tank so that it leaks gas, and put a match on fire and burn the gas line. Like thats basically how it works if you wanted to put a fuel tanked car on fire.
