      😂 I just got 2 vtx 1300 from my father-in-law for doing his roof and looking them up to complete maintenance on both, then I came across this video. I'm 65 got back into riding after laying off 35 yrs..I bought a 2009 VTX 1300C....and I love it ! What a great bike..handles great took it on a 1200 mile trip and it performed flawlessly I wasnt beat up it was comfortable ( Mustang seat) smooth at 75mph. Best purchase I've made in a long time.

      The one in this video belongs to my friend. He took it on a trip with us from walker, louisiana to key west, Florida and he liked it overall. His only complaint was that the seat (also mustang) sat him too far forward. But he's also 6 foot 5 like me. Other than that he liked it. He didn't like that the rest of us had 6 speed bikes though. Lol.

      I bought the VTX 1300c to scratch the itch when I can’t get out on my CRF 450x or KX250. I love the VTX. Easy to work on and rides smooth. I have the original seat and it lays back nicely. I have a Mustang seat for when the old lady rides with me. I bought a 2006 with 3900 miles in 2009 for $5000 at 2% interest. Great purchase and bike. Outran a large Harley a couple years ago.

      I really torn on the 1300 vs the 1800. There are plenty of 1300 available but I'm concerned I'll "out grow" it. I like the fuel injection of the 1800, the power...can't decide!

      They are great bikes. This review was meant to be un biased in any way and was my opinion of the bike. No bike gets a 10/10. I just bought a 2015 road glide special for 20k and it even makes about an 8 out of 10.

    I have a VTX. I think you are the only person on the planet that thinks there is a problem with the clutch. Also, how can you run out of gas when you can set one of the tripometers back to zero when you fill up and when you get to 130 miles you know to start looking for gas and even if it does start running out you just change over to your reserve tank and you have 40 more miles?

    • @ThrashTestDummies
      @ThrashTestDummies  3 роки тому +7

      I never said there was a problem with the clutch. I implied there was definite room for improvement. I own a vulcan 1500, vulcan 800, sportster, my 2015 harley road glide special, and a few others. All of which have DRASTICALLY better stock clutches. The vtx clutch has a very long friction zone and more throw than is necessary. Perhaps to a newer rider or someone who has not ridden several different bikes it is acceptable. Nonetheless, there us room for improvement. Hence the countless upgrades.
      As for the gas gauge, thats more of a convenience thing. Its a 2005. Every other comparable model had a fuel gauge.
      If you already have a preconceived opinion, maybe you shouldnt watch review videos where someone expresses their personal opinion... Just a suggestion.

      @@ThrashTestDummies I had a Vulcan 1500 also. Several other bikes too throughout the years. Anyway I was on a forum with thousands of other VTX owners and just never ran across any of them which didn't like the clutch so I thought it rather unique that you didn't. I don't know that I would refer to that as "preconceived" or not but I suppose it depends on how you look at it. Have a great day.

      My 2003 model had a reasonably stiff clutch it’s fair to say but was a very reliable bike, have a 2015 Honda fury, same engine but it is definitely a smoother ride and the clutch much lighter.

    • @dagnabitification
      @dagnabitification 5 місяців тому

      Go to Glenn's vtx garage and get you an adapter for the clutch, much lighter pull and as smooth as can be. I have never had a gripe about the clutch, and as for the gearing you just need to get used to it. Been riding for 50+ years. The VTX is pretty much trouble free. Throw a set of floor boards on it, makes a big difference in comfort.

    I bought my 06 VTX 1300c last May. It's all stock, but today they will pick it up to put cobra speedster slashdown, air cleaner, and jets in the carb. I can't wait to ride it this year. It's been a great bike. I agree on the clutch, it could have been a bit stronger, and it badly needs a 6th gear. Great review!!!

      Thats awesome man! The clutch could have been tighter from factory for sure. But there are aftermarket options available. I will show them soon. As well as how to change exhaust, air cleaner, and jet, rebuild, and tune your carb so stay tuned! My whole objective is to teach people how simple most of these things are to do and hopefully give them the confidence to do it themselves if they wish. Nothing like working on your own stuff! But on the same hand, there's nothing wrong with hiring a trained professional either. Thanks for watching the video!

    Nice video. Came across this while searching because I'm looking at one exactly like the one you're on. Never been on a vtx so ya gave a lot of good info. Being 5'9" I had concerns about it's handling. Just to mention, my xr650l has a "long" first gear too. Maybe it's a Honda thing. I subscribed so maybe I'll get to hear you do your Harley rumble impression again.

      lol. I will for sure do the harley rumble again. And yes, a lot of hondas bikes are geared that way to ensure first time riders can safely operate them. Same reason kawasaki has a built in clutch slip. Without it, the vulcan 1500 would be perfectly capable of doing a wheelie. Ask me how I know...

    Just got a 2007r…mustang seat, cobra long drag pipes. I like it a lot…wish it had fuel injection, which the Fury has with the same engine. YES!! First gear seems geared absurdly tall. Haven’t ridden for 30 years and my test drive was really embarrassing. Kept stalling and didn’t have the torque to pull you through. End bringing up the revs much higher than I expect, slip the clutch a bit and immediately back off throttle as I’m hurtling towards the curb and leaning hard. Too much excitement for a returning noob.Previous owner removed the baffles so it’s louder than god.. not beautiful loud, just obnoxiously painful. Backfires on deceleration… there’s a common mod for that.wish it would rev a bit higher on acceleration. Beauty lopey idle due to the single pin crank. Next step up is the VTX 1800, which has insane power and weirdly low prices nowadays

All others, just roll off the throttle and shift up, same going down. So, I don't know what your problem is, maybe this bike needed the cable adjusted. Anyway, it's a great bike and I enjoy riding it. Each to their own.

    I find the gearing perfect, but I have 50 years of riding experience so I adapt better I guess. Hondas are always predictable when I comes to gearing.
    The clutch is "wonky"? First time I've heard that. I think you need to adjust the clutch so you don't have so many issues when riding. A fuel gauge? Really?! I guess I've been riding since the days when there was no "fuel gauge" on any bike, so you used the trip odometer to determine when you get fuel. One of those things you learn to live without if you're a younger rider.

    I’ve been riding just under 2 years, 2003 VTX 1800R. I mostly ride in St. Tammany and a little in Washington Parish. My first and only bike. I don’t know enough to talk about other bikes, aside from noticing the 1800 has a hydraulic clutch. It does have long gears, as you describe. I can be at 15 mph on a neighborhood street and the bike almost wants to be in second, but second ain’t ready till at least 20 mph. Mine is at least 800 pounds and I’m a pack rat with the equivalent of the fat boy scout character in a young adventure movie, in my many assorted bags. Bandaid, beans, cigars, tire plugs, jump box, air compressor, camping gear, the list goes on. It’s kinda tarded but, I like backup plans. Anyway, I know this video is old, but I dig your presentation. If you see this, can I ask what camera you’d suggest? I don’t know if I’ll try making videos or anything, but it’d help in a post wreck dispute. Assuming I survive said wreck. Cheers.

      I am 6 foot 5 and about 300 pounds. My friend who owns it is about 6 foot 4 and maybe 270 or so. With minor changes such as bars and seat you would fit comfortably. He swapped to a mustang seat and 16 inch apes. That put him with the bars at shoulder height. We just made a 2600 mile round trip from walker, louisiana to key west and he had no complaints. There is not much difference between the 1300 and the 1800 size and weight wise. However, with that said, I think the power of the 1800 could get you in trouble. “Could” being the operative word in that sentence. I can't speak for the 1300 but my 1800 doesn't need any throttle to take off. When you begin to let the clutch out, the engine revs up a bit assisting the take off. If you give it gas it tends to be a rough start.

      But seriously, you'd be just fine at 5'4". The stock bars make it feel wider than it really is though. So if you change them out it would really just feel like you were on a faster 750.

      It is not. The one in the video belongs to a good friend of mine. My personal vtx is down at the moment to be built into something cool (stay tuned for that) and I own a bunch of different bikes. From Harleys to Hondas. I think people have taken my video in the wrong light though. This was my personal opinion based on the bikes I have ridden in my lifetime. This is how I believed the vtx to compare. I am by no means calling the vtx a bad bike. There are just things that could be improved. A 10/10 suggests perfection, and there are things that could be changed on the vtx to make it perfect. But "out of the box" it is lacking in a few areas in my opinion.

    The clutch issue you describe is easily fixed with a simple adjustment of the cable. Mine felt the same when I got it. I got used to it thinking it was normal, but I still didn't like the feel and function. Then I loaned to the bike to a friend for a while. He thought the same thing only he pursued it and found the adjustment. He fixed in one minute what I complained about for a year. The clutch works great.

    • @stevevandermeer1958
      @stevevandermeer1958 Рік тому

      By the way, you only need to use the clutch coming out of first into second gear, from second on you only need to roll off and shift into the next gear. Same with down shifting, only need to use clutch going down into first. Makes the loud clunk and you know you are in first. It's a wet system, so you don't need to squeeze the clutch every time you shift. If you think it's "cluncky" coming out of first to second, then maybe you need to adjust the cable. Check the spec book and make sure it's within range.

You are free to take that chance if you wish of course, but I am going to take the safe route and just use the clutch cause fixing a tranny is a very costly and time consuming job.

I've gotten it up to 115 mph. One thing I really have to say about it is the lack of high speed shake. On the CBR, between 65 and 80 mph, there was always noticeable shake, then it would smooth out. My VTX doesn't do that.

    Nice review. I just got a vtx1300r last month, and i love the bike. Even so, I agree that first gear could be geared a bit lower.

      I'm working on designing new gearing for the rear end that will come in two variations. One will increase acceleration and the other will increase cruising speed while lowering the rpms. That's as close as I can get within reason to changing the gearing.

      @@theheathen1516 very nice! Congrats! What year is she? From what everyone seems to be saying online and UA-cam is that she’s a solid cruiser!
      I’m currently selling a 2006 vtx1300R only 11k miles, 1 owner, great shape mostly stock, Honda dealership recently did oil change, brake fluids flushed, radiator coolant flush, new fuel lines, mustang seats, HD progressive f&r shocks garage kept. My neighbor who was a retired air force fella in his late 60s not riding it as much and he took care of it very well since he bought it when Honda literally assembled it brand new from the box. He didn’t ride is as much the last 5 yrs or so so it had rusty tank and carb needed to be rebuild and cleaned and retuned which I just recently had that taken care of. One day few months ago he asked me if I’m interested to claim the bike from Honda dealership and just pay for the work mentioned above and she’s all mine! He wasn’t interested in riding anymore and said of course! A gift from nowhere! Got the title already just did a super detail and she’s in tip top shape. I don’t even have a motorcycle license or ride at all but I listed her on Craigslist here in Vegas.

      @@lstruggy mines a 2005, and they are great bikes. Here in Pennsylvania the vtx1300’s all seem to start around $4k unless they are thrashed, been wrecked, or are overly customized. My old boss had a 2006 with 46k miles, never any problems. At least until a deer decided it didn't like it. If they were still making them, i probably would have bought one new.

      Hondas are indestructible and very well made. 2 to 5 feel more correct for the bike for sure. And I'm sure with an upgraded clutch it would really wake the bike up. Maybe I should make a video about getting the vtx to be a little more peppy...

      Thanks for watching the video! Let me know exactly what you like and dislike about the VTX. I plan on making a follow up video to this one that is based on the opinions of others who have put more miles on them than I have.

    I've only owned Harley Davidsons and real Indian Chiefs a 46 and a 48 so I no authority on foreign bikes. I did however go with an person who wanted me to go with them to see a Honda 2005 VTX 1300 and I was surprised at what a nice bike it was. She ended up buying a 2007 VTX 1800 she had been riding a 750 Shadow. I rode the 1800 for her too I actually liked the 1300 better for comfort the 1800 seemed too wide or something. As for gas gages none of my bikes had one except my 02 FLSTC that has one I the phony gas cap so I'm use to that.

    • @ThrashTestDummies
      @ThrashTestDummies  2 роки тому +1

      Oh man I'd love some pictures of those Indians! I geek out on old bikes.
      The 1800 is Hondas muscle bike. It is certainly a force to be reckoned with. But the 1300 series are definitely nice bikes! The VTX1300 was actually one of the two bikes I suggested my friend (owner of the VTX in this video) try to find, with the other being a Vulcan 1500 or 1600. He opted for the VTX mostly because he couldn't find a viable Vulcan at the time, but he absolutely loves it! Nothing but love for the VTX from me. But as with any bike, there are areas that could be improved. This would ultimately come down to what the rider wanted to get out of the bike though.
      Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback!

    Liked and subbed. I'm in my 60s, had bikes most of my life. I've had a 01 Roadking for 6 years, but wanted something a little lighter and still comfortable. Just bought a 2003 VTX1300S with 53,000 miles and I'm loving it! My only gripe is the handlebars, don't like how much they curve back toward the rider near the grips. It puts my wrist at a weird angle. I'll get some bars that put the grips nearer to straight east-west orientation. Great review!

    I just bought a 1300c and I love it so far my clutch if great on mine it. My friction point seems to be good as well. I would agree first gear seems long and I didn't really notice is much till after I watched your video. However it don't bother me much at all. My 2 biggest complaints on the bike is not being fuel injected, and also not having the gas gauge. While I was bike shopping the 2 big things I wanted was fuel injected, liquid cooled, and something big enough to go down the interstate and still have the power I need to pass vehicles on 2 lane highway. I got everything I wanted besides fuel injected. But I got a steal of a deal on mine so I sacrificed on the fuel injected part!

    250cc is perfect for beginners, and 500cc is about the sweet spot ideal for a lifetime daily driver keeper bike. 750cc is already pushing too big, too heavy, and too wasteful of gas... just to have acceleration on tap you don't need. 1100cc, 1300cc, and 1800cc... I just shake my head at them. Esp. the 1800cc
    When you're gas mileage is getting down there to 35mpg, 30mpg, 25mpg... you might as well drive a car.
