Depeche mode is beyond great. You’re taking the reference to personal Jesus too personally. I recommend going to a Depeche Mode concert. Your appreciation will change.
For myself this song hit me.I was Baptized Roman Catholic....I took this song as them poking fun at fame and how fans often " worship " bands or artists. Like Elvis....seriously if 200 years from now or 1000 archeologists dig up Graceland and discover a Temple dedicated to some God named Elvis repleat with bobblehead dolls and Holy Clothes with his face painted on them. The artist themselves are usually shocked to discover the lengths some ppl will go. Lita Ford and a guy hiding in her hotel room closet comes to mind. I believe it's called starstruck. Unfortunately some artists themselves buy into that belief. As for the vibe maybe your not into it but I am. TKS!
Been a fan of Depeche for years. Some people don't care for them and thats alright. It took me a while back in the 80's to warm up to it and the really like it. To each there own.
My uncle who was a priest(has since passed) used to come over on Friday nights to visit and when he would hear my music blaring from my room while I got ready to go out he would come up and dance while I put my makeup on or we would dance together. He loved club music and this was one of his fave songs.❤
When this song first came out, I thought that it was about “phone sex”, where people would call telephone numbers advertised on television, and pay a fee to talk to a female customer service representative that would “render their services” to their callers. It was a fairly-new thing in the early-1990s. In a later documentary about the phone sex industry, it was revealed that the workers were middle-aged/older women, most of whom were not attractive at all. They just “talked a good game”.
I think songs like "Strangelove' or "World In My Eyes' might be more he style of theirs that you will get into. A few of their videos are FIRE.... like 'Wrong"
I first heard Depeche Mode in 1989. Their album with this song (and Enjoy the Silence) had just been released and a friend lent me the cassette to listen to on the drive to university. I'll be honest. I hated the whole album on the first listen. I tossed the cassette in the glove box and forgot about it. Months later, while driving, I was sick of the music that I had been listening to for the previous week in the car, so I grabbed a random cassette from the glove box... and it was this one again. I am not sure if I was just in the wrong mood the first time I heard it, because on this second listen every track was literal fire for my ears. They have been one of my favorite bands ever since and I have flown around the world several times to see them.
While I absolutely love this song, I find your honesty SO refreshing! So many reactors act like they love every single song they react to and that's just not believable at all.
Why are so many of you wimps letting someone acting ignorant and pathetic off like this? This guy's opinions are ignorant and worthless. Stop justifying and excusing ignorant people. It's not "honesty" it's "ignorance"
I'm 51 and grew up with Depeche Mode. I personally love the song. But I don't judge anyone for not liking it. I think it may depend on what age and era you hear a song that carries a lot of weight why someone likes or dislikes any song. Like someone said in another comment, not everyone will vibe to the same thing, which is a good thing.
I imagine he would dislike that even more given his somewhat inability to move past metaphors and costuming lol No shade but he gets really hung up on that stuff some times lol
@@SparkimusPrime You're not wrong. I honestly thought he'd hate the song for the title alone, probably why he keeps going with the Spanish pronunciation.

Incredible song by an incredible band off of their VIOLATOR album. The groove is amazing and the sound is a vibe that is a banger. One of the most popular club songs of the era. You should check out the song "Blasphemous Rumours". Incredible song!
So glad that you’re being honest about not feeling a song. So many reaction channels will like everything & that’s not realistic. Appreciate your honest opinion!!
But you don't have to like all music. Fortunately, music is so individual... There are many great artists I don't vibe with either. Personally, I'm a big fan of Depeche Mode - and love this song too. I think it is connected to the fact that it has followed me through my teenage years and into my adult life, so the song is now connected to various memories. That's how it is with music - and there is no right or wrong
I (do not) understand the reaction. This is not one of my favs by DM, but is catchy as hell man! And you are giving an evaluation of the song in barely one minute and a half... BTW "tu propio Jesús personal" se rodó en el Desierto de Tabernas>Almería>Andalucía > ESPAÑA. This is the only sand desert in Europe. @@tricko8000 I have been to Almería a couple of times, but I never visited this place; It's a little far for me, I'm Basque. BP usually bases his opinion on a song by how he "vibes" with it. If it doesn't click with him well into the song it just doesn't work for him, but he has changed his opinion further into a song before.
Personal Jesus was on the same album as Enjoy the Silence but was a very different vibe (Violator Album), they are a band that have experimented with different around, so not every track will be appeal to everyone. I worked with a girl who had been at a concert of theirs and when the played this song the sky opened up with lighting and thunder at an open air concert venue. She and the crowd said it was spooky. But then there! It's incredible to read this, because I experienced exactly the same scenario at one of their open-air concerts, in France in June 1993! with this song! 🤣😁😉 weird !!
You have to like musical complexity and a lot of layers to like Depeche Mode. I feel like they are the Gustav Mahler (classical musician) of the electronic music world. Kind of like how Prince is Mozart of the eclectic pop/funk/soul worlds.
That would be Throbbing Gristle...Depeche Mode was more new wave/new romantic. Now Ministry had their industrial run and started as new wave. Grandpa Al.
Mark my words! This song is a grower. I also was not a fan as it actually came out. But damn it, if I don't end up blasting out loud this song every time it plays out on the radio as I drive... Keep playing it a few more times. I would not be surprised if it does end up on your playlist at some point... Keep digging in their repertoire. Probably the 80's band with the deepest catalog of interesting melodies. Have fun!

Please, BP, don’t give up on Depeche Mode! You are listening to their later stuff, which is definitely more industrial/goth, but they started as a synth-heavy band in 1981. Listen to “I Just Cant’t Get Enough” from their first album, and Everything Counts. I have loved Depeche Mode since I was 13 years old, and it’s still one of the best live concerts I’ve ever been to. BP you HAVE to react to Johnny Cash's rendition of "Personal Jesus" and I'm pretty sure you will love it. He made it his own, like he did with "Hurt". A masterpiece,
Listen, Depeche Mode STILL has a huge VERY loyal cult following. Never got into their music much myself except a few hits the radio overplayed so you can’t help but know every word, like “People Are People” which does have a really cool unifying message. So for me it’s more a nostalgic comfort of knowing the songs from my childhood than actually being a fan of their sound. Just was never a huge fan of nu wave type of music like this 🤷🏻♀️
Keep it real to you BP! In the 80s, when this band was huge (at least among many of my friends), I could not stand their music! But somewhere after 2000, I started to like them. Now I like most of their stuff. Sometimes it just takes time! And I do now like the music and production of this track. Weird.

Johnny Cash covered this song. This song by Depeche Mode has more of a Country music influence to it, which was a bold musical departure for the group at the time the song was released. The wanted to do some musical exploration, to try out new things, to try to get a new, fresh sound.
I would rather you be 100 honest .. this some gave us the dance that turned into the Macarena! They are one of the original EMO ( we called it goth) bands.

I guess you either love it or hate it 🤷. Personally I LOVE IT!!! Always have, always will. Cool AF,!!! 😊
The funny thing is this was written because Martin had just read the book by Prestleys wifes book about him. She called him her personal Jesus!
And Johnny Cash, yes THAT Johnny Cash, covered it as well so check it out
Fair to say that Johnny Cash does not have a reputation for covering crap songs - I rest my case !
Agreed, his cover is really good and more straightforward.
Incidentally he also covered Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage"
I think he should listen to Marilyn Mansons version before the Johnny Cash one.
