This is my favorite D.M. song by far, it was played alot on radio in the 90's. I recently found out it has a Elvis connection.
“Personal Jesus” was inspired by Elvis and Me, Priscilla Presley’s memoir, released four years earlier. “It’s about how Elvis was her man and mentor,” Gore told Rolling Stone, “and how often that happens in love relationships - how everybody’s heart is like a god in some way, and that’s not a very balanced view of someone, is it?”
So Seph your channel has gone full circle.

This blew my mind when I first heard it in 1989. This is the first song they ever did where the main riff is played on guitar. This and Enjoy the Silence are arguably their biggest songs ever. You didn't ask about the meaning, but I'll tell you, Martin wrote this after reading a book about Elvis and his wife, and how she put him on such a high pedestal he became like a god to her. Martin is basically saying you shouldn't worship other people, so whether he's a Christian or not, the song had a good message.

1990 was such a leap from the 1980s. House music was really strong, with rave and DnB starting new waves of sounds. Grunge had started. Indie matured. Everyone wanted to be different. DM brought out Violator and it was very different to their 80s. Policy of Truth and Enjoy the Silence are other pop tracks. In the album though, waiting for the night and clean are heritage DM. Songs of Faith and Devotion album will blow your mind when u get there as its intense.

It's surprising that you don't know this song. Such a huge hit beyond the DM brand itself. To this day, one of the most played songs even on regular radios and still the Top by Depeche Mode. By the way, it has received various cover versions, the most famous one by Johnny Cash, and there is nothing to talk about in connection with Elvis. The meaning of the song is perhaps perfectly simple, in the video clip our group goes to a brothel in the wild west. Gore's guitar riff is immortal, the current live version starts with a slow prelude and then it explodes into a real rock orgasm. I really miss that you don't respond to these songs as follows - original, video clip, then originally live and most recently live. It's not just songs. It's a story. Very big and beyond the ordinary music genre. Depeche Mode is faith. Your personal Jesus.

The song was inspired by the book "Elvis and me", written by Elvis Presley's widow, Priscilla. Martin Gore said "Personal Jesus" is about how someone can be seen as a wholesome Jesus figure who offers his/her heart to you, and how unbalanced is to view a person in that way.
It's commonly interpreted, however, as a cynical parody of televangelists who use religion for personal or commercial ends.

For those of us Gen X'ers who did NOT get into DM pre-1988 (because, perhaps, we were listening to too much Punk...), what drew us in was either Never Let me Down Again or Personal Jesus. Then we discovered the rest. But, for a lot of us, those two songs were the ones that caused us to stop and listen. I don't know where PJ would fall on my list of favorite DM songs, and I got hooked by Never Let Me Down Again, but I saw it happen with dozens of folk I knew the year Violator and Personal Jesus were released. Driving with a friend, Violator playing on the tape player...friend makes me rewind and a week later owns every DM album. That sort of thing.

One of my friends bought Music for the Masses on release day and brought it over...that's when Never Let Me Down Again grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and didn't let go. This was the right time for teenage me to get into Violator and work my way backwards through their catalogue. Everyone at my school knew who DM was, but I got made fun of a lot for liking them 🤣

Opinions about "personal jesus" are divided among old DM fans - although it may not show here in the comments.
Many people like it, of course, and rate it highly. But quite a lot of people, on the other hand, are not at all that fond of it.
Martin has this funky blues side to him. And Dave has a rock side to him with both sides showing here in this song.
"I feel you" on the Songs of faith and devotion album is another example - although that song is "raspier".
For me "personal jesus" is not a big favorite - although I think it does well live.

Hi Seph. It’s so great you are discovering Depeche Mode and their great music. And that you are are going through their albums from start to finish. There are more gems to come that you will love! Recommend when you have reviewed their albums. Go through “The Human league” back catalogue Then “OMD”and “New Order”. If you like Depeche you will love these bands. Many gems of songs you will love. Like Depeche also still going strong. By the way an OMD song called Electricity off their first album is being used on new electric car ad on TV right now!

@@SephPlays I promise you those synth driven bands I mentioned there are some bangers in there. Many of them. There is also an evolution of sound. So you have got from 1979/80 to current day with all the above mentioned. Some great tunes. Human League start with the album Reproduction. OMD start with the album Orchestral Manoeuvres in the dark. (OMD). New order Movement. ( New orders first album is my least fav but after that their music become phenomenal). Richard.

I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that Depeche Mode violator shaped what rock ‘n’ roll in the 90s was. This song was a Smash success, and was the first single from the album. Oh… and HE is the Personal Jesus. “I will deliver. You know I’m a forgiver.”

Strangely the song didn’t do great on the charts but it was a huge song on the radio. The last break was on the album only. And feels mixed in really badly. It was part of the Pump mix that was combined with the original track. Not the best mix and the “single” version was much better and much more complete sounding.

personally I don´t like this song very much, also the song "enjoy the silence". It´s mainstream but the grower songs are much better than the mainstrean songs. If you hear "Tora Tora Tora for example it´s challenging in the first time, but then the song leads you in an other dimension.
