  • A break from welding is something that is needed sometimes, and its up to us to realize when its necessary. I take a lot of pride about talking about the more uncommon topics in welding, and especially when they apply to us taking care of ourselves physically and mentally. Lets have a coffee here today and catch up!

Dusty, you need the time off to relax. As a retired auto mechanic and aircraft mechanic I'd take 2-3 week long vacations a year. Came back feeling better and ready to work hard (and plan for the next time off). I used to work long hours not for the overtime but the time off. It's the healthy thing to do. Take care and stay healthy. Thank you for your time and videos.

We sometimes think that taking time is a waste of time, but taking a break and taking a step back allows us to come back stronger and be even more productive!
You made the right decision, for you, for your family !
    Welcome back to business !

Dusty, i also have just recently discovered your content witch for me is a huge thing im a father of 5 boys and a husband to an amazing supportive wife, i relate 100 percent to everything you said in this video im a ship fitter, welder, machinist, at a ship yard here in northern Washington but have always wanted to better my skill set and tig welding is one ive already grown immensely with the help of your videos guiding me on my journey in tig welding, im happy to hear that you got this time for you and your family and im sure i speak for all your viewers when i say thank you. Thank you so much for your time that you sacrifice to help all of us grow and be a better welder, provider, a father, and husbands, there is alot to learn from you for all of us more than just welding, your topic in this video is one that my wife and i talk about quite often so, thank you truly for this one.

So glad to hear you’re rested and recharged! I used to buy non-refundable vacation airplane tickets so it was sort of forced on me or I had the habit of cancelling vacations and working myself into a stupor. Now I realize that taking time off is not only enjoyable but therapeutic. But one thing remains constant…I start every weld with…get comfortable, do a dry run, and most importantly…fill and chill, then, and only then move and dab. Appreciate you more than you know!

I do I.T work i got first welder like 5 years ago and was kind of scared of welding. Got cheap used flux core unit to just make a few things, then ended up with two stick units, then got an Arccaptain TIG machine for a demo but had a hard time with it so doing TIG class at the college i work at. May even attempt either partial or eventally AWS level one cert, don't need but could be cool to have.
I thought I would do computer stuff a lot more but I do for work and get home about all i want to do is surf online. I'd rather do things in the garage, house projects, bike, etc. Four years ago a few coworkers after many tries talked me into trying horse riding they really scared me but eventally decided to try it. Ended up liking and then wanting to learn to ride and take pictures, then moveing on to new challenges, been doing riding lessons if i can near once a week now. I found it a nice distraction from other things i was thinking about, and I feel like i'm learning more soft-skills and leadership type thinking and patience.

Glad to hear you had a great time in our beautiful country as someone who has burned out- pls don’t put yourself and family through it.
You have an admin person, good.
Outsource as much editing as possible.
Look for other opportunities to outsource or delegate.
Work out which tasks in your life are repetitive or low value and which tasks are high value for you or your brand. Outsource as much as you can.
You might have less net income but you’ll have more time with your kids - something you can’t get back.
Also, idk when I picked it but I’d assumed you rode. 😅

Dusty that's not good for the body or mind I know I did it 40 years and a lot of it away from home I missed so much. Take time for you self and family because life is so short I know I lost my wife after 38 year's and I wish now I would have been around a lot more.

Wow, Dusty, excellent job. I sure know the feeling of pushing it hard because that is how I am. At one job, we used to put in 14-16 hours a day, 7 days a week for 3 months. Yikes. To paraphrase an old saying about machinery, here is a variation for us: “if you don’t schedule time for maintenance on your body, it will schedule if for you”. I have first hand experience of that. Good for you to recognize that before you just completely burned out. Thanks for being honest about it.

Sounds to me like you’ve worked hard for some good “paid time off”. (Said in the best/positive way).
And that not only did you work for that time off but you were also able to maximize it to its fullest, being able to enjoy it as much as possible.
I really do think that’s awesome and congratulations on your amazing trip!!

Dusty its so good to hear you were able to hit the reset button and get that quality time your family needs, and that includes you to them as much as them to you. Looked like an epic trip especially when you don't have time constraints and can really relax. More and more studies are coming out where breaks are a good thing and actually make the work much better than a grind and constant 7 day a week battle. We all appreciate the work you put into the videos and some probably don't know how much editing is done in a 10 min video.
Continued success with the channel and the on line course. Buying my first dedicated TIG and going to take your course because of you. I like the way you teach and encourage.
I rarely write comments, so count this as my random act !!!!! LOL.

When I signed up for one of your courses you responded and thanked me from Australia or your flight from on your way home. Hope you had a great time!
