- This beekeeping video is my visit with Robert 5 days later after installing nucs into the 10 frame hives. Robert had lots of beekeeping questions and I do my best to share the knowledge I have. A little disclaimer here... I know I don't know it all. I'm still learning, but I love to the opportunity to share what I do know (as I understand things) with people. These bees are doing great. I am completely new to bees, but I've been a mechanic a long time. Try "Harbor Freight black nitrile 8mm gloves" $8. For a box of 50. Reuse if you like. They dont tear.

May I make a very important suggestion? Inspect that top cover and inner cover for any problems and especially look at the bees on that inside of that inner-cover to make sure the queen isn't there. You'll only forget to do that once and lose the queen to teach you a valuable lesson.

Jüst fyi it can save you and your families life.ANYONE will become allergic if you do not get stung at least once a month. If. you have a family, every family member has to be stung once a month. This is extremely important, if you don't you can die very very easily. Your children and wife are even greater risk. 1 in 100 people are allergic, but 1 in 10 beekeepers families are allergic....

One thing I saw from a real old timer bee keeper was that everyone does the smoke wrong. Lift the lid, puff a small amount of smoke, put the lid down and wait a minute, then go ahead...

I'd recommend some reading too! "Beekeeping for Dummies" is good. "The Hive and the Honeybee" is another book with a lot of information on Langstroth hives and beekeeping. Of course, watching beekeepers on UA-cam is also a way to learn. Big key though is Beekeeping is "local". What is best practices in Texas may not be the same in Minnesota, and vice versa. I enjoy watching Robert learn as he goes. Thanks for the update Blake!

I thought if there is a queen cell will cause more than 1 queen and she leaves causing a swarm losing half your bees

Right on keep up the good work. You should dive right in bro don't be scared take a look at all the frames it will help you understand the bees better. Commercial beekeepers on way to look at a couple frames to see if there's eggs and then they pack it up but as a hobbyist you can go through the whole hive. Thay only do a couple because thay have hundreds of hives. But when when your learning check out the whole thing and practice finding that Queen. Some times you will get stung and kill a few bees but that's all part of owning hives jest smoke the dead bee or sting real good to get rid of the pheromone and you should be fine.
I'm interested to know more about this "cocoon" process bee larva have in their cells. As I have always looked at it, how can they do this when by the time they reach the point to to where they have filled the cell and it's capped off, how can they spin something around them with so limited space. Does anyone have more info on this. Because Google does say bees have cocoons, but not sure how this is done. Would love to know more. Gratefu.

find surgical gloves they are worth the money to get them we buy cases full of them for the dairy hands too most of them can use the same gloves for the mailing with the cheap gloves 10 pairs per person it cost as much in the long run

Did Robert not study or learn anything about bees before jumping in???
Laying workers will only produce drones. The likelyhood of the egg from a laying worker will survive is poor. They don't do a good job of physically laying the eggs, but if it does survive it will be a drone.

I thought you weren't supposed to leave your kids off your hives, as it affects the temperature and that can affect the bees...???
Check out (walls bee man) he is a funny beekeeper on UA-cam and (outofabluesky) is another good beekeeper that uses topbar bee hives. And (Canadian beekeeper) has a good Channel too he is a commercial beekeeper in Canada.

Workers can lay haploid eggs, growing to be drones, males. Males have half the chromosomes as females.
really you do not all of that armour on to look at armless honey bees lol you not fighting in the 17th century the roman arming now the just honey bees
I take it you have something that can "bee" terrible to the girls.
