I liked the shorts, so yeah I think they should continue. They don't even have to be 7,4, and 11. What if they did a three stories interlocked thing like Treehouse of Horror or Anthology of Interest. I mean, Gravity Falls did it, and it has lots of similarities to Spongebob, even if it's darker.
randman That would be pretty cool, three shorts that are similar thematically and belonged to one production number, so they could make each one however long they wanted.
I think the reason they stopped doing the shorts is because Nickelodeon would rather air one 11 minute short as a premiere, instead of showing the whole 22 minute episode, and it would be weird if Nick advertised a brand new SpongeBob episode, showed 4 minutes, and that's it. (Though they did do that with Gary Takes a Bath in 2003, and if I recall correctly, that was an over hyped episode like Plankton's Army, and Best Day Ever)
Dipper723 Yeah, I was thinking something like that too. Nick can hype the heck out of an 11 minute episode, and make it seem more important than it is (Even though we all roll our eyes). I doubt they could get away with doing that to a 4 minute episode, not enough footage to manipulate :P
Or how to make sure your Protagonist doesn't exploit an antagonist's fear to the point where he lays down in the middle of a road. And than have the protagonist laugh.
I liked the shorts. I especially liked Spongebob vs. the Patty Gadget and The Donut of Shame. I even liked Pat No Pay. If they brought them back, I certainly wouldn't object.
'Night Light' is the reason why they start making these shorts. It's literaly two episodes mashed together. And yeah, almost half of the season 6 feels like extended shorts
redwaytoo Slimy Dancing is like, 4 episodes mashed together into one big thing, but hey, I love that episode. Slide Whistle Stooges should have been 4 minutes.
Feelthe Power Slimy Dancing is just borrowing some plot points from other episodes. Stuff like "Good Heighbors" and "Night Light" are just stars like one thing and ends like complitly other. I have a strange feeling that "Night Light" was just unfinished script that was left from season 4 production. I mean, it's a last Chris Mitchell episode, despite the fact that Casey already teamed up with Zeus in "Friend or Foe"
Feelthe Power I really liked Slimy Dancimg first time I saw it, specially the epilogue. Night Light left me very mixed, I felt like if they cuted that part with depressed mean cashier it could been a lot better
You can do a lot in three minutes-just ask Genndy Tartakovsky. Every episode of the original Clone Wars series was three minutes. And in a show like SpongeBob where you don't have to worry about telling this big continuous story, I'd imagine that they're capable of a lot.

I see your fans have given you a TV tropes page! Well done, that's like a hallmark of popularity! Although I kind of think those tropers focus too much on some things and not enough on others, plus that site is so darn addicting that I don't go to it anymore. Still, good job! I don't think I've had much of an opinion. Forming opinions on this stuff is kind of YOUR job, not mine ;)
Even though I didn't like all of the shorts, I think the concept could've been continued in other seasons. It would've been nice to see what other short episode concepts could be created.
I don’t have any means to invest on your Patreon, but I’d love to see a Square Theory video about how the energy of the show has changed from having a more upbeat and fun world to something slower and sometimes even seemingly condescending to wacky, cartoonish things.
They don't even have to animate an entire episode to shorten it down. They can just do it from the script. If they edited down a fully finished episode, that would be a waste of resources, but they don't have to do that.
cutting down episodes could actually be a good thing for Nick-they can air the shorter version on the channel, then put the full 11 minutes version in the DVD and hype it up (kinda like DC is doing with the extended cut for BvS)
Season 5's shorts were a great idea, they kept lots of episodes from dragging. I wish they kept them into Season 6 because lots of episodes of that season couldve used a shorter runtime
Funnily enough, Gary takes a Bath is easily the most controversial episode of the pre-movie seasons. It was banned from airing in many countries because of both the prison reference and the "subliminal messages" part. (Which is hilarious, BTW. Lighten up, other countries. They be like, "sorry you had to see that, Gary."
Jonny Boy He's right. I actually looked it up. I don't know why they would ban it. I mean I get the whole why they took the French joke out in the France version. Because honestly in the region of France and with the French voice actor of Spongebob. It doesn't work for that region because he already knows how to speak French in that version of the episode. But banning it? Why? There was nothing wrong with that episode and that whole "the subliminal girl was creepy" it didn't even bother me so why do certain countries have the episode banned? Hell I think originally the episode in the U.S could have gotten banned but thank god it didn't.
with something as simple as spongebob you can't do that much and it's quite obvious with all the filler they add into new episodes that Nickelodeon can't fill 11 minutes with an actual episode. I think it would be better if spongebob was nothing but shorts at this point.
Since the episodes are often in pairs, I think that instead of splitting up one of the episodes, if they felt that one episode should be longer than 11 minutes but not a half hour special, they could have an extended episode and a shorter episode. Like a 15 and a 7, or a 18 and 4.
ya9thelatinogringo they did that with shanghaied/gary takes a bath in season 2 and back to the past/the bad guy club for villains in season 7 (and maybe other times l don't know about)
Let me sum up my thoughts on all the shorts. Help Wanted: Great Reef Blower: Good Gary Takes a Bath: Good(close to meh) Rise and Shine: Meh Waiting: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRIIIIIIIIING! Actually one clever idea I just recently thought of, if Nick wanted to have a way of keeping SpongeBob show cased on tv, I thought a better route to go would've been to just do fun little shorts of it throughout the years on the network (kind of like what Disney's doing with Mickey Mouse). That way, it keeps SpongeBob fresh and enjoyable to fans old and new if continuing the show wasn't really going to work well. Plus, it REALLY would be putting less of a risk on the show getting corrupted cause like you said, people can take a bad short than they can take an actual bad episode. And not only this, 2009 would've been the perfect moment to actually plan the first special tv movie for the show to celebrate 10 years. They could've even contacted Hillenburg to help write it out I'm sure he would've had the pleasure to. This actually would've been a better way to run things, but nonetheless I still do enjoy SpongeBob to this day and I know the writers really have been doing their best to keep things fresh as much as they could, so I don't get caught up in all the fuss.
Hey Pieguy, I think it would be a great idea if you make a video on every creepy moment from Spongebob considering it has plenty. You can even add in clips of the moment or pictures.
Elijah Mathews He might do that when he has reviewed all the seasons, if he usually post a Seasonal Review every 6 months. He should be finished with Season 9 by 2016 or 2017
When Looney Tunes made shorts back in the 1940s their cartoons became legendary and are even talked about today. Some things are just better when their shorter, because sometimes simple plots is what really makes great comedy.
A lot of people think Spongebob shouldn't change at all. But you said it yourself, not shaking anything up is killing it. This is why Plankton's Pet is my favorite You know what I really think needs to happen? Instead of just killing the show, air a spin off that isn't afraid to change stuff. I'd personally would love for it to have more of a narrative like awesome shows like MLP and Steven Universe. Not being 100% comedy would actually make the show FUNNIER. How come no one gets this? Character driven jokes are almost always better, at least to me. Of course, it can't get so serious that it looses its original charm. But I really don't think it has to!
Krusty Plate was hilarious, one of my absolute favorites. It's a classic 'up to eleven' story. Reminds me of Mythbusters - that stupid cement is being stubborn? Let's go absolutely nuts - load a metric ton of explosives and blow it up. Just mindless harmless distillated fun. Also, Spongebob is a BAMF in 'SB vs the Patty Gadget'. He triumphs in 'Pickles'. Karate Choppers is just made of win. I want to see Squidward being awesome (Pizza delivery), Krabs, Patrick, even Plankton, there's not enough of these episodes.
***** So, basically, because a show like Phineas and Ferb is in the real world, it never had innocence? The show has to be completely sugercoated so even the tiniest implication of something dark, like the fish coming back to life, makes the show lose its innocence?
Here's how I look at the shorts. Just like everything else in Season 5, they were pretty mixed. When they're good, they're great, but when they aren't, they usually aren't that bad. Also, I noticed that the first four shorts in Season 5 were Scumbobs but five of the final six were good episodes (and Pat no Pay was probably the least bad of the Scumbobs), so I think they were learning how to do them better.
Freezeflame22 :P I did, but it turned into a much bigger video than I expected. It's still on the way, but I decided to work on some shorter stuff first.
It sure worked with old cartoons like looney tunes to have short simple episodes. Hopefully season 9+ will have more shorts or even four minute bonus features only on DVDs.
I thought the shorts were a cool idea, even if they didn't always work. It would be nice to see them again. Gary Takes a Bath is also my favorite Gary episode!
I mostly agree with your video, aside from when you said that Nickeldeon should pay animators to pay for the full episode, then to just have to edit it down to 5 minutes. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think the idea itself is all right, but you have to think about the animators and the actual cost of animation. Cutting back the amount of animation being used will mean the animators get paid less. How about this for an idea (with a similar concept): have the episodes written and storyboarded and such and *then* have the episode cut down to only the bare essentials, so that way the episode itself is produced more efficiently with as little waste produced as possible.
here's an interesting question: if they kept the shorts format to the next seasons, which episodes should have become shorts? btw, i like this format too and wish they kept it.
I know one episode that could've been a short. Rodeo Daze. That episode has a lot of filler in it. The climax is only 30 seconds and the obnoxious Rodeo Song is like 4 minutes long. Not to mention that it takes forever to get to the main plot of the episode with all the filler distracting from it.
So the square theory videos in a nutshell (I endorse watching the full videos), but here's the short: Why is Good SpongeBob so Rewatchable? Because it's memorable and quotable, yet there's still more jokes. Has Patrick always been a Jerk? Yes Should SpongeBob have continuity? Yes How important is the story in SpongeBob? It varies How would PieGuy make a SpongeBob TV Movie? Better than Nick. Why is SpongeBob (the character) so annoying? It's a part of who he is as a character and his actions aren't always justified.
Adam Baldwin I would change "Should SpongeBob have continuity?" from yes to "it should have at least a little, but not too much" and "Why is SpongeBob (the character) so annoying?" to "The audience's annoyance usually stems from his actions not being justifiable" but otherwise yeah you got it :P
+PIEGUYRULZ Tbh, the problem is the fact that mainstream cartoons are more on continuity, so people think that even goofier and silly cartoons need continuity, and I honestly think that's not right, but creating theories for them is fine.
Daffy Duck Nah, the problem is that a show going on 17 years can only go so far recycling the same ideas. Adding a character or new hobby to the show isn't the same as having a hardcore story arc.
***** True, but If I was a creator it'd be pretty damn hard to brainstorm new ideas at that many seasons, and I think they recycle plot lines because Season 5-9(before post-sequel) had the same writers doing the episodes. But, we should see how Season 10 goes since Steph is back. And according to Vincent Waller, the humor will change.
This video confirmed he hasn't reached the 135 pair yet in his season 7 review, and 152 is the last pair in S7, therefore it's gonna be a looooooooooong time before it comes.
He said "from what I hear there is another short paired with a special like Shangheid" he is talking about Back to the Past and TBGCFV which are episode 135, meaning he hasn't got there yet, because he said "from what I hear".
Imo spongebob was getting bad anyways. Season 1,2,3 all were epic episodes! The only one I didn't like was the He's flying one which was the last one. The movie was great as well. Theirs nothing to say but spongebob from season 4 and on will never ever be as good then Any 1,2,3 season episode's

Great video! You should do a Square Theory on how to correctly turn a protagonist into an antagonist for an episode.
Or how to make sure your Protagonist doesn't exploit an antagonist's fear to the point where he lays down in the middle of a road. And than have the protagonist laugh.

Why is Good SpongeBob so Rewatchable? Because it's memorable and quotable, yet there's still more jokes.
Has Patrick always been a Jerk? Yes
Should SpongeBob have continuity? Yes
How important is the story in SpongeBob? It varies
How would PieGuy make a SpongeBob TV Movie? Better than Nick.
Why is SpongeBob (the character) so annoying? It's a part of who he is as a character and his actions aren't always justified.
Adam Baldwin
I would change "Should SpongeBob have continuity?" from yes to "it should have at least a little, but not too much" and "Why is SpongeBob (the character) so annoying?" to "The audience's annoyance usually stems from his actions not being justifiable" but otherwise yeah you got it :P

Tbh, the problem is the fact that mainstream cartoons are more on continuity, so people think that even goofier and silly cartoons need continuity, and I honestly think that's not right, but creating theories for them is fine.
Daffy Duck
Nah, the problem is that a show going on 17 years can only go so far recycling the same ideas. Adding a character or new hobby to the show isn't the same as having a hardcore story arc.
*****
True, but If I was a creator it'd be pretty damn hard to brainstorm new ideas at that many seasons, and I think they recycle plot lines because Season 5-9(before post-sequel) had the same writers doing the episodes.
But, we should see how Season 10 goes since Steph is back. And according to Vincent Waller, the humor will change.
R.W.SB (Rest with Scumbob) Spongebob Shorts - Season 5 - Season 5
Not that they were bad or anything.
If You Pause At 0:28, You Can Get A Clear View Of The Fraction, 3/26!
Yay! A ST!
You ought to try watching the new Mickey Mouse shorts and Wabbit.
The're around 3-4 minutes long, but they had good pacing and storytelling
There was one in season 7
Cool shirt. :D
Nice video, I personally liked the shorts even though not all of the Season 5 ones were good. By the way, have you ever seen Astrology with Squidward?
Moke McHelloThere I have, I wish they still aired them :(
VedantNetwork I know right? I can't even find all of them on UA-cam, let alone in English.
I heard they lost some of them
VedantNetwork Yeah, I could at least find like three in English, but the rest are just gone.
This video confirmed he hasn't reached the 135 pair yet in his season 7 review, and 152 is the last pair in S7, therefore it's gonna be a looooooooooong time before it comes.
Feelthe Power Unless he's trying to be ambiguous about it to not give any hints away when he spoke about Back to the Past and TBGCFV.
Feelthe Power How so?
He said "from what I hear there is another short paired with a special like Shangheid" he is talking about Back to the Past and TBGCFV which are episode 135, meaning he hasn't got there yet, because he said "from what I hear".
Feelthe Power There's also A SquarePants Family Vacation (long episode) and Sandy's Vacation in Ruin (short).
***** They weren't paired.
I think it's a nice idea.
I thought the shorts were pretty entertaining and what made Season 5 very underrated.
they need to take notes from the new mickey mouse cartoons
What are you doing to celebrate twenty thousand subscribers when you hit the milestone
One of the first, not the first, maybe first 30, I thought the idea of shorts were okay, but they cut the plot
No meh shorts lol
Gary takes a bath is not a short
it is though
Batman beyond
It's 6 minutes long, so yeah
It's funny that you say that the shorts were a good idea, considering that half of the shorts are ScumBobs.
Did you at least like the 2nd movie? I did, as well as many others. Even the people who only liked the older seasons claimed to have enjoyed it.
Melvin Cooper I saw the first like 60 times. I didn't get a chance to see the 2nd yet
Oh ok lol. To give you a heads up, the movie was written by Steven Hillenberg and had ALOT of references from S1-3 so it's definitely worth your time.
Melvin Cooper damn 😨 i gotta see that
Melvin Cooper im just trying to find it because its not on the big screen anymore
O_O dude.. you should replace nickelodeon. seriously. you are listing things that should have been done by them long time ago!
I think it was good and bad
I think the idea of shorts are meh.
I liked some of the spongebob shorts, but others were bad.
Sawneek My favorite short was Gary Takes A Bath
Mine was also that one as well VedantNetwork
89th
Finally I am first!
