Ren Hoek - Good Neighbours was the first time they forgot to make Squidward an asshole before punishing him. Unlike in Fools In April or Club Spongebob, Squidward does nothing to antagonize or even insult Spongebob in any way. His crime in Good Neighbours (god every time I type that title I have Fallout 4 flashbacks) was to try to enjoy his day off, and yet the universe not only decides to punish him for that heinous atrocity by taking every activity and plan away from him, but also go on to tell him that he'll never ever get to do it for the rest of his life. Imagine if you were in that situation, and the two idiots living next to you framed you into forced public servitude until the day you died, all because you had plans for your day off. It's a sick plot that Squidward didn't deserve in the slightest.
Season 6 is better at "turning people away from Spongebob" than Seasons 4 and 5 are. Personally, I'd say these two seasons are the most underrated seasons ever. I can't say I like Season 4 more than 5, or vice versa.
Abdullahi Bouraleh I would say that Season 5 was kind of a big turning point in the shows quality, with different animation and side characters being cut back more for different stories and different character sets. But I agree that both seasons are underrated. My turning point was around Season 7.
I personally prefer season 4. It feels far more consistent and the best episodes of the season really nail the pre-movie feel. However, I also have to give season 5 some credit for being very experimental and having even higher highs(even if the lows are pretty low).
To me, Season 4 is partly one of the "classic" seasons and partly one of the "modern" seasons. If anything, Season 4 is the bridge between "classic" and "modern" Spongebob, given the inconsistent tone. Personally, I would have had Season 4 be the final season Friend or Foe be the series finale, because I feel had Spongebob ended with that particular episode, then the series would have ended on a high note. Sure it wouldn't have been as high of a note as the movie, but a high note regardless, after all, better to go out with a bang than with a wimper. I understand that Season 5 wanted to be more experimental, the problem was the execution of those experimental ideas, with Atlantis Squarepantis being what I believe is the biggest missed opportunity the series ever had. I mean seriously, Spongebob goes to Atlantis of all places, and considering how the show already has an underwater setting, you had an idea that had so much potential... and instead, we get this weird Willy Wonka musical with David Bowie guest starring... and _he doesn't even sing_ (my guess is because of contract stuff), so I just feel it was a missed opportunity more than anything.
I would still call it classic, because it's the last season where I could confidently say it felt like I was watching the same show. The classic pacing, style of humor, personalities of the characters, and bouncy animation are all still present here. It definitely started slowly losing that throughout season 4, but season 5 is where it became clear to me that SpongeBob wasn't the same show anymore
Season 4 can definitely be divided into two parts: Season 4a (Copyright 2004 - 2005) Storyboard Directors / Writers - Mike Bell - Aaron Springer - Vincent Waller Premise Writers: - Paul Tibbitt (Show-runner) - Tim Hill (Story Editor) - Mike Bell - Kent Osborne (There also seems to a be a few free-lance writers in season 4a) Season 4b (Copyright 2005 - 2006) Storyboard Directors / Writers: - Casey Alexander, Chris Mitchell - Luke Brookshier, Tom King - Zeus Cervas, Erik Wiese Premise Writers: - Paul Tibbitt (Show-runner) - Steven Banks (Story Editor) - Tim Hill (Story Editor) - Dani Michaeli Not only the cast, but previous writers also confirmed in late 2004 that 4 Episodes had been ordered, which indicates that those four were made and finished before the next 16. 4a is sort of it’s own season. Season 4 is similar to season 9 as it feels like two different seasons combined.
I will always think Season. 4 is better. There are a lot of great episodes in that season and there really weren’t any bad ones. Except a few. Season 5 however had some greats but also did have a lot of bad ones.
There’s no doubt that seasons 4 and 5 have more mediocre and bad episodes compared to 1-3, but if ask me, the good ones are just as good as seasons 1-3.
Super Jude 2018 Season 4 was definitely better for me. I liked Krusty Towers, Fear Of A Krabby Patty, Shell Of A Man, Krabs Vs. Plankton, Skill Crane, Dunces & Dragons, MM & BB 6: The Motion Picture, Wishing You Well, New Leaf, Bummer Vacation, Born To Be Wild, Best Frenemies & The Pink Purloiner. Season 5 had only Friend Or Foe, Spy Buddies, New Digs, Krabs à La Mode, Roller Cowards, SpongeBob Vs. The Patty Gadget, Goo Goo Gas & The 2 Faces Of Squidward that I liked. Season 5 had much worse ScumBobs than Season 4 e.g. To Love A Patty, WhoBob WhatPants & Atlantis Squarepantis.
Season 4 is the obvious answer for me. Even the best episodes in season 5 don't recapture the magic of the first three seasons, unlike season 4, which I think does have some eps extremely similar to seasons 1-3. Like you said though, I appreciate both for different reasons, even if one of them turned out much worse imo.
Well, in my opinion atleast experimentation can stop a show from becoming completely stagnant. On the other hand, it can also cause a show to completely lose its identity, which is equally bad. But yes, I personally prefer experimentation. So Season 5 it is.
It seems like for me, seasons 1-8 had a nice amount of suspense during the first time when I watched each episode. But it seems like seasons 9-12 were less interesting during the first time I watched each of those episodes. It seems like the least interesting seasons to me were seasons 10-11. Seasons 10-11 seem kind of like the most mediocre seasons to me. Those seasons seem to be my least favorite seasons to me. It seems like there were a few episodes in season 11 that had a nice amount of suspense such as "Whale Watching".
I love both seasons, but I prefer season 4. Episodes like Fear of a Krabby Patty, The Lost Mattress, Skill Crane, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture, and Wishing You Well still had that classic pre-movie feel. Heck, even Good Neighbors felt like a slightly weaker season 3 episode.
When I first recalled the Krusty towers episode I could've sworn it was season 3 or older. In my opinion, it is truly the last classic episode before Spongebob's level of obnoxiousness skyrockets to inhuman levels.
I think pretty objectively, season 4 is the better season. Any season with "To Love a Patty" in cannot be considered a very good season. But as far as season 5 goes, "To Love a Patty" is quite a blip. The second lowest episode of Season 5, I give about a 3/10, whereas "To Love a Patty" gets 1/10 from me. Season 4 however, I give the lowest episode a 3 or 4. So yes, I do think season 4 is better. BUT... if we're going by the good episodes, season 5 DOES have some really amazing episodes. Friend or Foe, Krabs a la Mode, Roller Cowards, the Patty Gadget, Blackened Sponge... these all could be some of the BETTER pre-movie episodes. Also, Night Light is a HUGE guilty pleasure of mine. I actually really like that episode. MM&BB appearing was a HUGE pleasant surprise for me. So overall, yes season 4 is better. But season 5 definitely shouldn't be sneezed at. Season 6 on the other hand................
Season 4 was definitely a step down from the stuff that came before it, but it still has some really fantastic episodes, and I think it's better than season 5 and overall a good season. In my opinion, the first truly awful season was season 6.
Speaking of emulating earlier seasons, have you noticed in recent episodes, Bubble Bass has been appearing more often and has even had his own episode? It's like the writers heard you and Chuggaconroy's discussion.
I have an idea for a Spongebob discussion video: If you could abridge all of the episodes from Seasons 4-9 to just a specific set and ignore all of the other ones, what would they be? You can include as many recommended episodes as you want and leave out all the ones that may ruin the show for some people, but it would help if the selected episodes can be rearranged into a specific number of 22-minute shows, like thirteen per season or something. For instance, an eleven-minute episode from one show can be put together with an eleven-minute episode from another, as long as the full show's total runtime is about 22 minutes...You can include good episodes, meh episodes and even Scumbob episodes if you feel that something could be gained from them, as long as it doesn't ruin any enjoyment of the show overall. I'm asking this as someone who hasn't really watched the show since Season 3, and is very interested in checking out as many worthwhile episodes from the later seasons as possible, without the experience being brought down by the really bad ones (unless, again, you feel that something could be gained from said bad ones).
Hmm.. i like the idea of a pieguy's cut of post-movie spongebob! if you removed all the scumbob episodes away from seasons 4-9... what would you be left with?
I've seen pretty much all of Pieguy's Spongebob videos, including the Top 10 of Season 5...I'm just curious because I know about certain episodes that he loves, and I'm interested in seeing what he would consider the definitive collection of episodes, without the experience being brought down by the unwatchable ones...
Yes this would be very interesting, but I think this would ultimately fail, and people would notice it. PieGuy has previously stated that in even some of the best episodes, recurring issues that are seasonal problems are still present (though not as noticeable). I know this because I actually did this myself, and watched some peaks in Season 5, and noticed things like SpongeBob's high voice, Mr. Krabs' flanderization, and overall just the tone set me off a little bit. Don't get me wrong, these are still amazing episodes, but they're still Season 5, 6, 7, 8, and even 9 episodes. If you show someone who grew up watching 1-3 for their lovable characters, then I almost guarantee it will not be nearly the same. If you show someone who is just in it for the comedy, then you might not get as many, because though there are episodes funny enough to be labeled "good", it's not usually up to seasons 2 and 3. Especially with 6, 7, and 8 where you may get like 1-5 from each season. Even some of the peaks of a season like 8, weren't too funny, even "It's a SpongeBob Christmas" or "Hello Bikini Bottom", were said to be good, but not really THAT funny (on a side note, I know they're specials, but they are still the peak of season 8, the best between the 3). So yeah, I hope you understand where I'm coming from, I think this wouldn't work for people interested in plot, because of the characters. And you wouldn't get too many for comedy because, well, they don't often reach that standered (episodes like "The Slumber Party" being an exception).
I still consider season 4 in the classic era of spongebob. It's not as good as the first 3 seasons, but it still feels like the original seasons. I don't really like season 5. That's when I stopped regularly watching it.
We Remotely Low yeah its somewhere in the middle I guess. It's also nostalgic for me because I was like 10 when the 4th season came out so it was just as good in my eyes.
Well, the thing is, I'm not necessarily referring to quality, I think a lot more than that separates classic Spongebob from modern. But it being a transitional season, I just mean it has vibes and it stylized as both in parts.
@@beta511ee4 It's not that it's bad. It's just that they've changed too much of the Spirit, Writing Style, Budget & how the Show was produced. I personally really don't like that they possibly put the original assets at risk & created a huge overhaul by changing the Series to widescreen. I believe they should've kept Spongebob 4:3 and displayed all episodes properly with their side bars they could fill in with anything intact. They've strayed too far from the true creative vision & Soul of the Series. There needs to be more of Season 1 being used as inspiration as it's the most important one in my eyes.
When I started watching Spongebob as a kid, I didn't really seem to care that much about the seasons. I watched seasons 1-4 along with the current season at the time (Season 5). I eventually grew up enough to realize how much better the old episodes were than the new ones. Shortly after I came to that realization, I stopped watching Spongebob all together. Now over 10 years later when I started watching it again, I started watching the ones I remembered first. A lot of these came in seasons 1-3, which I obviously enjoyed a lot of the comedy, and also had shifted to relating more to Squidward, but I also found myself watching a lot of season 4 episodes. Krusty Towers, Skill Crane, Fear of a Krabby Patty, Dunces and Dragons, Wishing You Well, Have You Seen This Snail, etc. I know now that these are considered highlight episodes of season 4. But I also found myself enjoying episodes like Good neighbors, Best Day Ever, All That Glitters, etc. Sure they weren't as good as the other episodes, but I could still easily watch them. They still had that classic underwater background noise, and generally had a decent story even if the comedy was a little lackluster. What did I notice about season 5? I only came back for the patty gadget and krabs a la mode. And when watching the rest of the season, I just didn't enjoy it nearly as much. So I feel like the true decline of Spongebob was after season 4. Although I do understand why season 5 is so different, I just don't find it memorable as an adult versus the previous seasons. So while it's widely accepted that classic Spongebob ends after the movie, I personally think it's after season 4. The other reason for my thinking of this is that season 4, while sometimes a bit of a lazy animation, has a similar animation style to season 2 and 3. Spongebob still was easy on the eyes (he didn't look like a highlighter) Seasons 5 and 6-8 especially had some of the most unflattering DESIGNS of Spongebob. And as I mentioned earlier, it kept the settle underwater background noise, and all the characters had the same voices (except Spongebob, while different, it doesn't bother me because it's settle). The last reason I still consider season 4 a classic season is because the characters were still relatively dynamic in personality. Spongebob still had some adult qualities, Squidward wasn't always a cynical and depressing character, and Patrick wasn't always dumb. Personally, this is one of the biggest reasons why it still has a classic feel. The characters are showing signs of Flanderization, but it's not developed to the point where the characters are dull and static. Even as early as season 2 could I notice settle signs of Flanderization. Did it make it a bad season? no, in fact, I think that season 2 is in the top 2 for the best seasons. Sorry for the giant paragraph, I went off on a tangent on this one. Although when I started watching season 6, I couldn't even finish the season. If I had to make a list of the best seasons, I would put them as 1: Season 3 (The humor in this season is about the best it will ever be in my opinion) 2: Season 2 (This season has the best average of good episodes, which makes seasons 2 and 3 interchangeable in my opinion) 3: Season 1 (This season is pretty much seasons 2 and 3 but slightly weaker... especially in the second half) 3: Season 4 (The first half seems more like a continuation of season 3 with a few kinks, and the second half is a little weaker. I think this season ties with Season 1. They are very similar in the way they progress in quality.) 5: Season 11 (The episodes are really good and have writing comparable to the classic seasons. The biggest problem for me is Squidward's voice change and the overly bright and exaggerated animation) 6: Season 10 (The same as season 11 but slightly weaker 7: Season 5 (This season is all over the place. The good episodes fit right in with the classic seasons, but the bad episodes just drag this season down so much. I do like the experimental aspect in this season though; which is why I place it above season 9. 8: Season 9 (This season came as a spark of hope for the dying remains of a good show. This season progresses in the opposite way that season 4 and 1 do; the first half is not that great, but the second half jumps a lot in quality.) 9: Season 6 (This season showed the last bits of good from a declining show. It had a few good episodes, but this is really where I stopped watching Spongebob) 10: Season 8 (This is similar to season 7 except slightly better) 11: Season 7 (This season is a perfect emulation of the titanic; even a show that seems unsinkable can be ruined for a lot of people with 1 season.)
From my personal experience growing up, I think Season 4 is better than 5 because it felt very simmilar to the last two seasons (2 & 3). I liked Season 5 as well as a kid, but it wasn't until Spongebob stopped airing as much new episodes at around either season 8 or 9 (the early 2010's) when I stopped caring about Spongebob Squareoants.
I love how you say, "comparing apples to oranges" while the season thumbnails are on screen, since the text for season 4 is red like an apple and the text for season 5 is orange like an orange.
I like Season 4 as a whole more, but Season 5 has my favourite episode in the entire series being "Krabs a la Mode" and some of my other favourite episodes.
I pick season 4 as better mainly because I find its episodes more memorable. Like, I couldn't tell what episodes are in season five off the top of my head, but I can tell you what episodes are in season 4. While season 5 does have some low lows, I didn't fall off SpongeBob until season six or seven so I find both seasons enjoyable at the end of the day.
Okay, I really liked this video. Would you mind comparing Seasons 6-8 in the future as well as comparing Seasons 9B and 10 once you review Season 10? I would be very interested on what you have to say for these topics.
Luke Vaughn He did say Season 8 was better than 6 and 7, but he also said Season 7 was "slightly" better than 6 ( Though I think the opposite ). I unfortunately don't see him doing a video on that, but it would still be cool if he did. I know he compared Choir Boys to That Sinking feeling from both season's.
Unlike A LOT of people, I do consider both of these seasons to be good seasons. I do like a lot the episodes from both of these, and they do genuinely feel like seasons 1-3 at times. As for which one I would say was better, probably season 4. In season 4, most of the season was good or okay to me. Not a lot of truly bad stuff to choose from. Now there was a lot more bad than seasons 1-3 (I only think they had one bad episode and that was Sponge Who Could Fly,) I wouldn’t say more than 5 five episodes could be considered bad in my eyes. With that many good and okay episodes and only one truly awful episode (All That Glitters,) I think that season 4 is a better season. Now that said, I do very much genuinely like and respect season 5. It was very experimental, though I felt a lot of said experiments paid off. I love episodes like Friend or Foe, Spy Buddies, Krabs á la Mode, Spongebob vs the Patty Gadget, Pest of the West, and heck even Stanley S. Squarepants for being different, while keeping the same charm of the what is and was Spongebob. While there is more bad than season 5, most of the time it’s just failed experiments that they learn from, so said bad episodes actually benefit the series. For example, To Love a Patty was bad, but it was a failed experiment that was attempting to try something more akin to creepy. When that didn’t work, they didn’t do any similar to that episode ever again. So while I do think that season 4 is better, I do think that both seasons are good, fare I say worthwhile watches. But thats just my input.
I have a soft spot for Season 4 and 5 because I grew up watching those seasons, with the first three of course. In my opinion, it doesn’t even matter which season is better, both are fantastic! Yes, there were some ok moments, but overall they’re still worth watching. Also, I feel like Season 6 was the one that made the series fell apart. There were some good moments, and of course there was some bad moments as well.
I love them both equally. I can see season 4 is the better written season, but season 5 is still the only full season I have on dvd so I have always been more forgiving towards it and pretty much enjoy every episode it offers (yes, even Atlantis).
This was the era where nothing too creepy could go down. Whereas the stuff of my nightmares has returned to haunt me again after that new episode. At that moment, I sure as heck wish I was in the UK then.
I would prefer Season 5 over all seasons of SpongeBob because it's my favorite season over all. It sometimes competes with my other favorite season, 3. Season 5 just had more interesting stories than other seasons did like a SpongeBob version of the Krusty Krab, cool music from a song written by Patrick, the nicer version of Squidward, an iced version of the Krusty Krab, a back story of two rivals, the original fry cook before SpongeBob started in Help Wanted, a western back story, more of SpongeBob's family, a travelling Krusty Krab, a clean vs dirty battle, a formula plan by turning characters into babies, Squidward becoming a hunk, SpongeBob proving he's a master frycook by defeating a patty machine, money literally talking to Mr. Krabs and more.
I've always enjoyed Season 4 more personallu but Season 5 definitely had some nice episodes like Friend or Foe and Krabs a la Mode. I still would prefer the show occasionally trying new things since I don't think anyone can really keep an exact same formula going for too long and expecting it to do well.
I like season 4 much more. A lot of it’s episodes have a more consistent feeling, with some of the early episodes of the season feeling pretty close to pre-movie. I think this season has some of the best episodes of the series (i.e. Have You Seen This Snail?, Shell of a Man, Krusty Towers, Dunces and Dragons). It is possibly the only season with episodes that stand a chance against pre-movie (with some later exceptions such as It’s A SpongeBob Christmas and Mimic Madness). I have to give season 5 credit for taking chances, but I don’t think many payed off.
Episodes like Fear of a Krabby Patty and Krusty Towers were so full of laughs it really felt like the old Spongebob. But beyond ones like those, it really did just feel like an entirely different show, and not in a good way to me.
Pieguy I think It would be really interesting if you did a video saying if season 6 is more worse than seven or if it is the other way round. That debate has also been going on as well.
Meh, I personally found 9A average, and it has four bad episodes, although they are REALLY bad (especially SpongeBob You’re Fired, my least favorite of the whole show) but to be fair, 9A does have some great episodes like Plankton’s Pet, Jailbreak!, Eek, and Urchin!, and License to Milkshake.
I stop watching spongebob when season 6 came around, I like some modern episodes & Season 4 & 5 are kind of part of my childhood I see some flaws with them, the first five season were classic from my point of view
Ideologically it's kinda hard to compare, since ultimately S5's philosophy won out, which produced S6 and S7(bad), and S8 and S9(better). Had they stuck with S4's ideology the show probably would have fizzled out more gradually, with less gems, but also less disasters
Season 4 Even Though I Stayed With SB Till S7 I Stopped Watching Regularly After Atlantis Squarepantis And I Like Season 4’s Best Episodes More Than 5’s Best And I Was At The Height Of My SB Love During S4
I prefer Season 4. It has some great episodes like, Krusty Towers, Wishing You Well, and Skill Crane! But Season 5 also has some great episodes like, Goo Goo Gas, Spy Buddies, and Roller Cowards!
I pretty much agree with you and everybody else. Season 4 is my favorite post movie season because It's closest season that really captures that pre movie atmosphere ( Heck, I used to think season 4 was still pre movie when I was a kid cause a lot of the episodes didn't feel out of place ), there were a lot of great episodes ( Where's Gary, Krusty Towers, Fear Of A Krabby Patty ) and the while there are a few meh episode's, they do still have some good In them like the weaker pre movie episode's. Now Season 5 has some of my favorite episode's of the whole series ( Friend Or Foe, Spy Buddies, The Original Fry Cook, Roller Cowards, New Digs, Krabs ALA Mode ), but because it was a such risk taker, it ended up being draged down more to a mixed bag by having not only more bad episodes than the previous seasons, but they backfired MUCH more harder to the point of even causing some real ultimate damage to the show. Good Neighbors in Season 4 for example, I was willing to forgive and look past some of the flaws because while the episode was a bit lackluster, I can't truly hate Spongebob and Patrick because while they are at times ignorant, they never mean to really harm Squidward, and at least they gave him a cake to make up for them ruining his sunday. Compare that to a bad Season 5 episode where Spongebob can be literally driving like a maniac and putting peoples lives at risk like In Boat Smarts, or literally murdering clams to protect a rotten sandwich like in To Love A Patty. So yeah. That said, this video was very agreeable.
4:38 Here Are Some Other Examples; "Driven To Tears", "New Leaf" and "Shell Of A Man" All borrow from "New Student Starfish", "F.U.N." & "Imitation Krabs" respectively!
vincent waller worked on the show as a creative director since season 4 also there's tim hill and chris mitchell who worked on season 1 and seasons 4 and there's mike bell who worked on the spongebob movie and on season 4 and obviously there's also paul tibbit that's always been there since the beginning
I feel so much nostalgia for both of these seasons as these were the first seasons i watched. I actaully krabs a la mode was the first episode i ever watched.
You are a nerd after my own heart! I love thinking about story and season structure. Do you think you'll still do "every episode reviewed" videos for shows other than SpongeBob?
Spongebob Sqaurepants used to be my absolute FAVORITE show growing up, but now because of the handful of okay and bad episodes it has gotten, I started to lose interest in the show to the point where I don't even watch it as much anymore. If I'm correct, Stephen Hillenberg quit the show because he felt that the 2004 movie was supposed to be the grand finale of the series, until Nickelodeon started making more seasons. Also, while many Spongebob fans declare the first 3 seasons to be the best, probably because of how funny it used to be back then, very few people have noticed the animation quality upgrade by season 4. That was because of the show's huge success in the first place. And I'm not saying that the animation of the first 3 seasons was inferior, I still kinda appreciate it for being nice to look at in a few places. Most animated shows were done on tight budgets anyway, but I think I stand by the fact that the general entertainment of the show matters more than anything.
One thing I forgot to mention earlier, despite the fact that I don't watch that much Spongebob anymore, I'll have to say that Season 4 is slightly better than Season 5 in terms of entertainment, just so everyone else who watched this video knows.
I like season 4,because even though I like season 5, much like seasons 1-3 this season has alot of classic moments like the piano gag in fear of a crabby patty.
In my personal opinion, I would prefer season 4, but I think it's more becuase of the nostalgia that leads me... but neither season 4 nor season 5 made me stop watching the show, it was around season 6 or 7 (I don't remember clearly, it's been a long time since then ^^) when I realized that the show I once loved had changed completely and the love was gone... but now, with the latest episodes, it seems to return step by step...
I like Season 4 more because it stuck with the classic Spongebob plots and it also had some amazing episodes like Fear of a Krabby Patty, The Lost Mattress, and Krusty Towers. Although Season 4's worst episodes were pretty terrible, Season 5 had some of the worst episodes of the whole show (Atlantis Squarepantis and Spongehenge). That is why I prefer Season 4 over Season 5.
Hi Pieguy, I'm Quincy Da Animator. I first discovered you when I watched your Every Episode of Spongebob Season 5 Reviewed video (yeah up until the Season 9 reviewed, I haven't been watching the Every Episode of Spongebob Reviewed series in the correct order lol)) and since after that, I have been in love with your content. You are definitely my favorite Tv and Film reviewer on UA-cam. Your reviews are really detailed, analytical and insightful, with each of your points thoroughly explained. In terms of my season preference, I've always preferred Season 4 over 5. However, I do appreciate that the crew were making efforts to try new concepts in order to keep the show fresh, and it really shouldn't be of a surprise that there would be bumps in the way of the experimentation. After all, it's part of the test. Even in the end, the new ideas did bring some really creative and highly enjoyable episodes that are not only on par with the original first three seasons, but are indeed highly original. Nevertheless, I believe that generally, each Tv show has it's style of writing as it what makes a specific show the way it is. Of course it's good to accept change and try new things, but if it affects the overall quality of the show negatively, then that is not good, as it can be seen by Season 5's scumbobs which are signifacntly worse than Season 4's. So overall, Season 4 is better (IMO) as it kept the show's style and didn't try to alter it in a way that could be damaging, and through that, we saw some really good episodes and scumbobs that are far from the worst of the series. Seriously, if episodes like 'The Thing' is the worst Season 4 could do, then honestly it's not that bad of a season.
I just watched lost and found and I’m dying just waiting for your season 10 review. Lost and found was such an amazing episode, I liked he ending a lot with Mr. Krabs feeling again like he cares like Spongebob and acts like a father figure to him along with all the references God im hyped
My guess as to how he'd rank the seasons Season 2 (ScumBob-Free!) Season 1 Season 3 Season 9B Season 4 Season 5 Season 8 Season 9A Season 7 Season 6 (Half the episodes are Scumbob!)
I love both of these seasons, but season 4 is much better IMO. It's more consistent with amazing episodes and a lot of this season is super charming. Season 5 is still great, but it's a little less consistent than season 4.
I recall watching the show back in 2007, and being astounded by just how many new episodes were coming out. I believe all but three episodes from season 5 aired that year, which I find pretty impressive. I'm sure the writers didn't have much time to make these episodes, so it's commendable that they created something that was even mixed in quality, given the circumstances. Being quite young, and being a SpongeBob fan, I didn't tend to mind the bad episodes very much, at least during season 5. New episodes aired so often that, if I didn't like one, another new episode was usually right around the corner. However, as time went on, I simply grew tired of the show. I think I stopped sometime in the middle of season 6, though I've now seen the vast majority of the newer seasons. To answer your question, I think I prefer season 4, between these two seasons. Even if it's lacking in comedy compared to the first few seasons, I still find it to be enjoyable overall. There's lots of season 5 episodes that I really love, but the bad episodes make it a weaker experience than season 4, in my opinion.
Thanks for notifying me about this video, UA-cam >_> I dropped off a few episodes into season 4, partly because of life stuff meaning I couldn't see the episodes consistently, and partly because I could tell there was something off about the show. But I did give S4 another chance a couple years back, and I actually did find quite a few good episodes in there. Not gonna lie, I did shed a tear during "Best Day Ever." >w>'' I think that would have made a really nice season finale.
Season4 has higher highs in my opinion: Dunces and dragons,Have you seen this snail?, Krusty towers, skill crane,Mrs puff you're fired and Patrick smartpants. Just to name a few.
9:40 You can tell from the Way They Titled The _Mermaidman & Barnacleboy_ episodes That, the writers had no way of knowing That, the show was going to have any seasons after the first movie.
Growing up as an early 2000s kid, I grew up with seasons 3-5(only watching the older ones during reruns). However even as a kid I noticed how different the show felt as I remember hating the show to death as a young child, throwing away all my SpongeBob Merchandise(No I did not see "The Sponge Who Could Fly" as a kid, so that event was not imitation). For me these seasons made me question if the show was worth watching, or should I finally move on to other things. Because I grew up without the internet, I didn't know what was pre-movie and was was post-movie, so my terms were something like Funny Spongebob and Dumb SpongeBob. In the "Funny" category some episodes were from season 4 and 5 looking back now, I really thought some were season 3 episodes. It was strange for a kid my age to notice its seasonal rot.
I’ve seen season 4 more recently but I never was turned away from the show. I always watched the show and always was a fan maybe because I didn’t have much reason to be critical. But the main thing was you could not expect when you could see spongebob come on at all.
Personally, I think both seasons had their highlights and scumbobs. (Opinion "warning") S4 highlight: Krusty towers and skill crane S5 highlight: Krabs a la mode and the two faces of squidward
I prefer season 4 because its high highs were great while its low lows weren’t that bad. Season 5 is really more of a mixed bag.
With the exception of Good Neighbours. That's probably one of the shittiest episodes in the whole series.
Ren Hoek ...did I fall into a roleplay trap?
Even though season 4 was different, I still looked at it as the same as the first 3 seasons.
Swish Fish All that Glitters is a much more shitty episode
Season 6 is better at "turning people away from Spongebob" than Seasons 4 and 5 are. Personally, I'd say these two seasons are the most underrated seasons ever. I can't say I like Season 4 more than 5, or vice versa.
agreed
Abdullahi Bouraleh I would say that Season 5 was kind of a big turning point in the shows quality, with different animation and side characters being cut back more for different stories and different character sets. But I agree that both seasons are underrated. My turning point was around Season 7.
How is Season 5 worse than 6?
@0Jmpc 6 Season 5 is NOT overrated! It's almost as hated as Season 6, 7 and 8! I agree with Season 6 being overhated, however.
@0Jmpc 6 Most Season 5 episodes are considered MEH. Only a few episodes are generally considered GOOD, such as Roller Cowards and Friend or Foe.
I personally prefer season 4. It feels far more consistent and the best episodes of the season really nail the pre-movie feel.
However, I also have to give season 5 some credit for being very experimental and having even higher highs(even if the lows are pretty low).
LordCrossbow I agree
**cough Waiting, To Love A Patty cough**
Yeah, Spy Buddies and Krabs A La Mode are definitely some of the best to come out of Spongebob post movie.
@@zombies4evadude24 don't forget Sing a Song of Patrick
Interestingly Pieguyrulz stats for the first half of Season 4 are better than the second half of Season 3
Well... Season 4 is home to Krusty towers and Have you seen this snail.
And Dunces and Dragons, The Lost Mattress, Best Frenemies, and Wishing You Well.
And The Pink Purloiner
and krabs vs plankton, born to be wild and karate island!
We are now to list every season 4 episode
@@abandonedoldaccount5634 yes XD
I'd lump season 4 in with the "good" era, not the "classic" era. It still feels way too different from the previous 3 seasons.
KraziStrawz "New Leaf" always felt like a hidden gem in season 4
I would still call it classic, because it's the last season where I could confidently say it felt like I was watching the same show. The classic pacing, style of humor, personalities of the characters, and bouncy animation are all still present here. It definitely started slowly losing that throughout season 4, but season 5 is where it became clear to me that SpongeBob wasn't the same show anymore
Watch good neighbors and the thing these are the worst episodes of the season in my opinion but I like season 4 but I prefer season 5
I'd lump 5 with the good era too, I also really enjoy 9-12
I prefer season 4 because it doesn't have as many BAD episodes.
Same here most of the episodes in season 4 are good
And the fact that the episodes that aren’t bad are absolutely amazing
Season 4 can definitely be divided into two parts:
Season 4a (Copyright 2004 - 2005)
Storyboard Directors / Writers
- Mike Bell
- Aaron Springer
- Vincent Waller
Premise Writers:
- Paul Tibbitt (Show-runner)
- Tim Hill (Story Editor)
- Mike Bell
- Kent Osborne
(There also seems to a be a few free-lance writers in season 4a)
Season 4b (Copyright 2005 - 2006)
Storyboard Directors / Writers:
- Casey Alexander, Chris Mitchell
- Luke Brookshier, Tom King
- Zeus Cervas, Erik Wiese
Premise Writers:
- Paul Tibbitt (Show-runner)
- Steven Banks (Story Editor)
- Tim Hill (Story Editor)
- Dani Michaeli
Not only the cast, but previous writers also confirmed in late 2004 that 4 Episodes had been ordered, which indicates that those four were made and finished before the next 16.
4a is sort of it’s own season. Season 4 is similar to season 9 as it feels like two different seasons combined.
yeah i agree it has a different crew
the animation in the first half looks a lot more like season 3
It makes sense because the first half of Season 4 is way better than the second half
Personally seasons 4 and part of 5 are kinda nostalgic to me. The end Point really was season 6
I like season 4. Season 5 was when the series declined for me
Super Jude 2018 Season 4 was definitely better for me.
ItzSpongeBobYT 1999 yeah
Super Jude 2018 I think season 6 was decline
I never liked Friend Or Foe, I'm just gonna say it.
The Ed Fanfic I know that
Season 4 is the obvious answer for me. Even the best episodes in season 5 don't recapture the magic of the first three seasons, unlike season 4, which I think does have some eps extremely similar to seasons 1-3. Like you said though, I appreciate both for different reasons, even if one of them turned out much worse imo.
I agree that season 4 is the better season for the same reason as you. Although both seasons come rather close to one another in my opinion.
Well, in my opinion atleast experimentation can stop a show from becoming completely stagnant.
On the other hand, it can also cause a show to completely lose its identity, which is equally bad.
But yes, I personally prefer experimentation. So Season 5 it is.
Season 5 was definetely much more interesting...
A.S.K. Air Season 5 had better ideas but season 4 had better excecution and have you seen this snail?
It seems like for me, seasons 1-8 had a nice amount of suspense during the first time when I watched each episode. But it seems like seasons 9-12 were less interesting during the first time I watched each of those episodes. It seems like the least interesting seasons to me were seasons 10-11. Seasons 10-11 seem kind of like the most mediocre seasons to me. Those seasons seem to be my least favorite seasons to me. It seems like there were a few episodes in season 11 that had a nice amount of suspense such as "Whale Watching".
No.
I don't know about you, but "Selling Out" really felt like a Season 3 episode to me.
@@KylerWulff yeah and The Lost Mattress too
@@zombies4evadude24 yea!
"Skill Crane" really felt like Season 3 to me
@@colinmiller8824 inlove that Episode
Don’t you mean The Thing is similar to Jellyfishing? I don’t see the connection to Bubblestand.
Oh wow, I totally had a brainfart on that one. Good catch.
When I first recalled the Krusty towers episode I could've sworn it was season 3 or older. In my opinion, it is truly the last classic episode before Spongebob's level of obnoxiousness skyrockets to inhuman levels.
I really like season 4. As it turns out, season 5 is more well-received than I thought. Now, most people think that season 6 started the seasonal rot.
Season 4 is actually my favorite season out of the whole show!
Opinion handled (despise)
I'm asking this as someone who hasn't really watched the show since Season 3, and is very interested in checking out as many worthwhile episodes from the later seasons as possible, without the experience being brought down by the really bad ones (unless, again, you feel that something could be gained from said bad ones).
mashitandsmashit pieguy once made a video of the top 10 season 5 episodes you should watch. Maybe u could check that list out?
Hmm.. i like the idea of a pieguy's cut of post-movie spongebob!
if you removed all the scumbob episodes away from seasons 4-9... what would you be left with?
Season 8 was good btw
I still consider season 4 in the classic era of spongebob. It's not as good as the first 3 seasons, but it still feels like the original seasons. I don't really like season 5. That's when I stopped regularly watching it.
I don't consider it classic, but I don't consider it modern either.
We Remotely Low Another person that equates modern to bad.
If I had to make a list of the best seasons, I would put them as
1: Season 3 (The humor in this season is about the best it will ever be in my opinion)
2: Season 2 (This season has the best average of good episodes, which makes seasons 2 and 3 interchangeable in my opinion)
3: Season 1 (This season is pretty much seasons 2 and 3 but slightly weaker... especially in the second half)
3: Season 4 (The first half seems more like a continuation of season 3 with a few kinks, and the second half is a little weaker. I think this season ties with Season 1. They are very similar in the way they progress in quality.)
5: Season 11 (The episodes are really good and have writing comparable to the classic seasons. The biggest problem for me is Squidward's voice change and the overly bright and exaggerated animation)
6: Season 10 (The same as season 11 but slightly weaker
7: Season 5 (This season is all over the place. The good episodes fit right in with the classic seasons, but the bad episodes just drag this season down so much. I do like the experimental aspect in this season though; which is why I place it above season 9.
8: Season 9 (This season came as a spark of hope for the dying remains of a good show. This season progresses in the opposite way that season 4 and 1 do; the first half is not that great, but the second half jumps a lot in quality.)
9: Season 6 (This season showed the last bits of good from a declining show. It had a few good episodes, but this is really where I stopped watching Spongebob)
10: Season 8 (This is similar to season 7 except slightly better)
11: Season 7 (This season is a perfect emulation of the titanic; even a show that seems unsinkable can be ruined for a lot of people with 1 season.)
What are your thoughts on S12?
From my personal experience growing up, I think Season 4 is better than 5 because it felt very simmilar to the last two seasons (2 & 3). I liked Season 5 as well as a kid, but it wasn't until Spongebob stopped airing as much new episodes at around either season 8 or 9 (the early 2010's) when I stopped caring about Spongebob Squareoants.
Season 4 feels like pre-movie, while season 5 started the trend of gross-out. Season 4 good, season 5 OK.
In my opinion 4 and 5 are good, but 6... different story
I love how you say, "comparing apples to oranges" while the season thumbnails are on screen, since the text for season 4 is red like an apple and the text for season 5 is orange like an orange.
I like season 4 more.but season 5 is still pretty good.but thats just my opinion.really good video pieguy!!
jmgaming19 same especially cause my favourite episode comes from season 4 guess which one
im guessing gary come home or krusty towers.since those are my favirotes
jmgaming19 Krusty towers is up there it's actually karate Island
My favorite is Dunces and Dragons but Krusty Towers is a close second.
Also Chimps Ahoy is ridiculously underrated.
Dino_Gamer chimps ahoy is a great one and I agree it's underrated
Luke Vaughn I would like to see season 9 vs 10 but not seasons 6-8
I love the thumbnail. 😂🤞
''Have you seen this snail?'' is my favorite spongebob episode of all time and its from season 4.
Seasons 4 and 5 are basically the "Post 1st movie" seasons, on the "1st 100 Episodes" DVD!
Season 6 was my turning point
I love them both equally. I can see season 4 is the better written season, but season 5 is still the only full season I have on dvd so I have always been more forgiving towards it and pretty much enjoy every episode it offers (yes, even Atlantis).
This was the era where nothing too creepy could go down. Whereas the stuff of my nightmares has returned to haunt me again after that new episode. At that moment, I sure as heck wish I was in the UK then.
Season 4 is slightly better
I still would prefer the show occasionally trying new things since I don't think anyone can really keep an exact same formula going for too long and expecting it to do well.
don't forget Sing a Song of Patrick
I like season 4 much more. A lot of it’s episodes have a more consistent feeling, with some of the early episodes of the season feeling pretty close to pre-movie. I think this season has some of the best episodes of the series (i.e. Have You Seen This Snail?, Shell of a Man, Krusty Towers, Dunces and Dragons). It is possibly the only season with episodes that stand a chance against pre-movie (with some later exceptions such as It’s A SpongeBob Christmas and Mimic Madness). I have to give season 5 credit for taking chances, but I don’t think many payed off.
Obviously season 4
Episodes like Fear of a Krabby Patty and Krusty Towers were so full of laughs it really felt like the old Spongebob. But beyond ones like those, it really did just feel like an entirely different show, and not in a good way to me.
Pieguy I think It would be really interesting if you did a video saying if season 6 is more worse than seven or if it is the other way round. That debate has also been going on as well.
Extreme 2 SwaggerHD To me, Season 6 is worse if only because of those stupid cheeks!
He thinks season 7 is better.
I'd say Season 7 is a bit better, because it started to get pretty good towards the end
You should do one for season 6 and 7 with what is worse.
9A was okay and I like 5.
At the end of his Season 7 rankings, he established that he still thinks Season 6 was slightly worse than 7 but not largely worse.
Obviously it's 7
6, at season 7 didn't have Unneeded GROSS OUT
I like season 4 better than season 1, and season 5 is super good as well but not quite as good as 4.
I stop watching spongebob when season 6 came around, I like some modern episodes & Season 4 & 5 are kind of part of my childhood I see some flaws with them, the first five season were classic from my point of view
Also, I have a feeling Vincent Waller becoming Creative Director in season 5 could explain why the show took more risks
Ideologically it's kinda hard to compare, since ultimately S5's philosophy won out, which produced S6 and S7(bad), and S8 and S9(better).
Had they stuck with S4's ideology the show probably would have fizzled out more gradually, with less gems, but also less disasters
Season 4's better cos I liked more episodes but season 5 was ok.
Season 4 Even Though I Stayed With SB Till S7 I Stopped Watching Regularly After Atlantis Squarepantis And I Like Season 4’s Best Episodes More Than 5’s Best
And I Was At The Height Of My SB Love During S4
I'd like to see the show try the "3 shorts" format again.
I like season 5 more personally despite lower lows I believe it has higher highs
I love your thumbnails. They remind me of the cover of these books I used to read as kid called I spy.
vincent waller worked on the show as a creative director since season 4
also there's tim hill and chris mitchell who worked on season 1 and seasons 4
and there's mike bell who worked on the spongebob movie and on season 4
and obviously there's also paul tibbit that's always been there since the beginning
I love your vids keep it up from a long time fan
I actually managed to hold up until season 7. Then I saw one coarse meal and SpongeBob officially died for me
I could watch PieGuy talk about SpongeBob for the rest of time.
One reason I like Season 4 more... "No! No! I want to live! I WANT TO LIVE!"
But Season 5 is still pretty decent.
Well researched, analyzed and edited video.
Good job, as always, PGR.
I prefer season 5 over season 4 because it tried somthing new and I give it credit for that because it stands out and is original
I like what they're doing right now by giving the recurring and background characters their own episodes.
Personally for me
Season 4 7.75/10
Season 5 7.5/10
I think Season 4 is slightly better than Season 5
Barry Allen Yes, Season 4 is actually pretty good (especially the first half of the season).
It’s just my opinion though
I would give season 1 around or slightly above 9.5/10
Now season 6, that was a disaster. 😂
BrokeBot I agree, but I didn’t think it was that bad (even though it’s my least favorite season).
The real question is what's better, Season 2 or Season 3?
2, in my opinion.
In his Season 3 video he mentioned that Season 2 was the best but he probably changed his mind now.
Season 2
My guess as to how he'd rank the seasons
Season 2 (ScumBob-Free!)
Season 1
Season 3
Season 9B
Season 4
Season 5
Season 8
Season 9A
Season 7
Season 6 (Half the episodes are Scumbob!)
Seasons 1-3 have similarities with Seasons 4-6.
Well, I'm with Stupid exists so i wouldn't really call Season 2 scumbob-free
@@kaams224 pieguy likes I'm with Stupid
Season 4 made me start thinking Spongebob was getting old, then Season 5 cemented it for me and made me leave
season 4 all the way
I love season 4 so much. Imo, it’s the second best season of the show.
I Agree 🤗
Season 4& 5 were actaully the first seasons i renember watching.
I belive Krabs a la mode was the first episode I ever watched
S1-3 is simular to S4-6
Thanks for notifying me about this video, UA-cam >_>
I dropped off a few episodes into season 4, partly because of life stuff meaning I couldn't see the episodes consistently, and partly because I could tell there was something off about the show. But I did give S4 another chance a couple years back, and I actually did find quite a few good episodes in there.
Not gonna lie, I did shed a tear during "Best Day Ever." >w>'' I think that would have made a really nice season finale.
Fun fact the season 4 episode Crusty towers what was originally meant for season 3 but they had to make it in season 4.
AKA: Disney's Bronze Age (1970-1977) VS. Disney's Dark Age (1981-1988)
In My Opinion I Really Love Season's 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5! I also HATE Season 6 With A BURNING passion!
I don’t know with dunces and dragons vs krabs a la mode both had good episodes season 4 though
I do think season 4 is better, mainly because its bad episodes aren’t as Anti-Spongebob-ish as the bad episodes of season 5...
I have a question. Why are some Season 4 copy episodes successful, despite the fact that some Dark Ages copy episodes fail?
Personally, I think both seasons had their highlights and scumbobs.
(Opinion "warning")
S4 highlight: Krusty towers and skill crane
S5 highlight: Krabs a la mode and the two faces of squidward
Notification Squad PIEGUY is a great UA-camr. Don’t give up
