Mae is intended to be the protagonist in this scene despite being a villain character while Indara is intended to be her antagonist despite her being a hero character, which is why Mae is the one struggling and being challenged in this scene. Attach that premise to characters general audience could actually care about and be invested in, instead of characters the audience either don't care for or hate for not being interesting or for being treated as interesting or righteous by the story went they very much aren't while demonizing other characters audience find interesting or sympathetic m, this blurring of roles could have actually been positively received,
The prequel era is a good place to start, you should also give the original trilogy a try as well as the comic books and video games, before Disney bought them Lucasfilm/arts had better ideas.

I don't think the Alcolyte as a whole was that bad, but I will say the first two episodes in particular were atrocious. I think Headlands lack of experience as a showrunner really manifested in ep 1 and 2 just not being that gripping. The mystery elements end up falling flat early on due to the poor structuring the first two eps.

It gets worse no spoilers, episodes 3,7 and 8 are bad episode 5 is mid and the rest is forgettable.
