I tried it, and it works good. Looks good too. But too hard to cut exactly with the Dremel, the notch in the knob, so found it much easier after you cut the key just to heat up the cut end of the key with the blow torch only a little bit and then press the key into the knob area (uncut) and it’ll melt itself right into the knob, then test out the length again make sure everything is flush. adjust the length of a key if needed. then you glue it.
Made several of these for my GL 1800. I used an after market knob that I got at Ace Hardware. It had a little bit bigger diameter than the OEM knob. When I was done, the larger diameter key will open the glove box and the gas lid, but the larger knob will not let the key go far enough into the recess around the ignition switch to start the bike. That way if you forget the key in the glove box... which I have done... No one could start the bike and drive off because the new key will not start the bike. This was not by design, but was something I found out after the fact. I'm actually happy that it turned out this way. Great tip.
Hi, thanks so much for the tip on the key fobs for the radio and glove box that was an excellent idea. You are awesome bought the keys from Walmart 4 dollars each. What a blessing. God bless and Thanks for your tip. John
I had the glue melt while on the freeway in Tennessee doing the Tail of the Dragon. The temperature was 107 on the freeway around Knoxville. I used the Gorilla glue as recommended. I also don’t advise leaving the keys in the bike when parked over night as they can be taken to a locksmith or Ace hardware to get a key made that will start the bike.
Donald Jones I’m sorry but that is not true my bike doesn’t have a chip. I asked my friend who has a 2016 and his doesn’t have a chip either. The EU bikes have chips the USA bikes don’t.
I keep saying it over and over all you have to do is take the glove box or gas key you made to anyone who makes keys and tell them you broke your key. They will take a Honda Accord blank and make another key. Just that simple, so if you’re going to park the bike open the glove box or trunk and put the keys you make in there . Stay safe Ride safe. I just learned if you make these extra keys and your bike is stolen some insurance companies will not pay, if you leave them unattended. They consider it to be the same as leaving the keys in the ignition. Check with you agent! So, remember put them in the travel trunk or somewhere out of reach when parking the bike. I'm not saying don't make them they are handy on long trips, just use them wisely.
Hi, just Wanted to let you know I received my windshield today the one that you recommended I will update you soon as the weather permits Thanks for recommending this product
Love the windshield really helps with the wind very nice Thanks key fobs work excellent too love them now while I'm filling up I can keep my cd player jamming
Great! I'm happy to learn about the less expensive key. I was going to order a genuine Goldwing key at a much higher price. Dennis, if I'm not mistaken, the Goldwing key has a chip in it, and the bike won't start without it. And no, you don't want the pocket access key to start the bike. That would just make it very easy to steal.
My previous '05 Wing came to me with this option in both the fuel hatch and the glove box. Neither of these keys were removable. Can someone give some insight on how this was accomplished?
What size of Dremel cutting disk do you use? I only have 1 1/2” disks and they are too wide to use on the knob without also cutting into the outside edges of the rubber knob.
For those worried about a thief using the knob key to start and steal your GW. The solution to this is simple. Get some used or new replacement locks for the gas lid, glove box and trunk. That way the knob key does not match the ignition key.
Just a thought, are the keys for this the same as ignition key, if so, anyone that sees a key knob on a wing, knows that if they get that out, they can take the bike...
I have a unrelated question. Where do I find the Sirus/XM antenna connection to the motorcycle audio unit? I had pretty good reception with my radio but my front tire started cupping in places and wonder if maybe it might have vibrated loose. Do you have any related videos or advice?
Wow, have no idea where the antenna is located. I would check the radio unit and make sure all connections are secure. The radio unit is located under the top shelter on pre-2012 Goldwings (non-Airbag).
I actually have a 2012 no airbag Wing. It worked fine up until my tire started cupping. I'm guessing that the vibration has jarred the connection loose. It works some at times but the rest of the time it says no signal.
I have a 2015 model and I believe the owners manual says the antenna is under the fairing at the top. I believe if you remove that top panel from the fairing, as if you're removing the windshield, you can see it. However, I would just drop by a dealer and ask for a schematic of the part and it should tell you where it's located
The chipped key is only for the Honda EU spec'ed bike as they use the Honda H.I.S.S. security system that North American bikes lack. Keeping the glove box and gas keys as short as possible and using a larger knob would help keep your bike your bike. But a clever thief could make s short key work in a couple of ways. Try not to forget your key.
No. The ignition key is longer, that is why we cut off the top of the key. It will be long enough to open the lock, but not long enough to engage the ignition.
This is one of those things that drives me nuts. Shouldn't need a key to open my gas tank. So I removed the tumblers and machined a replacement that slides right into where the lathes are actuated
Angela Brown Fuck that I wouldn’t want someone else trying to set fire to my bike by having free access to the petrol tank it’s happened before I like having a key to my petrol tank and anyway there are so many other things people might like to do with your petrol like siphon it out people are mad these days it’s just the key takes a few seconds to use not the end of the world
I never understood why someone would want to do this when that same key fits the rest of the bike? Someone could just ride off with your bike or access the bags and trunk... Nothing like leaving your key in the vehicle and have to tell the insurance company or the Police that the thief had a key.

That was 1.97 a key at Walmart very good price

Jake, if you cut the correct length off of the key, it cannot be used to start the bike.
you can not start the bike with that key. The keys that come with the bike has a chip in it so the bike can start.
Donald Jones I’m sorry but that is not true my bike doesn’t have a chip. I asked my friend who has a 2016 and his doesn’t have a chip either. The EU bikes have chips the USA bikes don’t.
the key I had made would not start the bike but unlocked everything

Just made one for my GL1500. Used JB Weld (didn't have any gorilla glue) and works great. Thanks!
JB Weld should be fine!

Just made three of these nifty little gems for my F6B. Thanks for posting this awesome video!
I used a chrome knob on my GW-1800 and it came out great! Thanks
Sehr gut... - genau das habe ich für meine Wing gesucht und nun gefunden... 👍😊
Danke für die Idee... 👍😊

my 2014 has no chip. The spare keys I made for the knobs started the bike.
My previous '05 Wing came to me with this option in both the fuel hatch and the glove box. Neither of these keys were removable. Can someone give some insight on how this was accomplished?

can work this way for any Moto-key. I will try my Indian Bobber. (just saving up for my second glowing)
A couple of 1/8 dia. holes in the top of the key will give even better grip to the knob...Hal
Simple, quick, and neat.
Thanks for the knob part number, that's what I needed.
What is the exact part number for my radio knob if I have a 2001 Goldwing?
You can get the match for the chrome knobs on Wingstuff
For those worried about a thief using the knob key to start and steal your GW. The solution to this is simple. Get some used or new replacement locks for the gas lid, glove box and trunk. That way the knob key does not match the ignition key.
The key I show in the video is not long enough to engage the ignition.
Can the spare not be used to start your bike? if so would leave it open to theft
The spare will be cut too short to reach into the ignition.
Cruiseman's Garage not exactly hard to extend it this is dumb
Jamie Powell
Then don’t do it. Problem solved.
Just a thought, are the keys for this the same as ignition key, if so, anyone that sees a key knob on a wing, knows that if they get that out, they can take the bike...
Good question. By cutting the key down in length, it will not operate the ignition.
@@cruisemansgarage thanks for the reply, keep safe and well, regards Chris

Thank you so much for your response leadfooty
An ILCO HD110-P is an acceptable substitute also. I just used one to make mine.
I had two Axxess 27R cut at Lowes and the work the grove box, gas tank and trunk great but will not start the bike!! Should they?
I like it, I am headed to the hardware store right now.

I was checking this out and wondered..... Cant a bike thief remove this knob and stick it in the ignition and drive off with your GW?
No. The ignition key is longer, that is why we cut off the top of the key. It will be long enough to open the lock, but not long enough to engage the ignition.
Nice small project.

what a awesome idea
Great Tip...
I like the ideal of not always having to use the key.
I never understood why someone would want to do this when that same key fits the rest of the bike? Someone could just ride off with your bike or access the bags and trunk... Nothing like leaving your key in the vehicle and have to tell the insurance company or the Police that the thief had a key.
Who is going to tell their insurance company that there was a spare key??
Too short to go into ignition and turn it
is your goldwing stolen yet?
