It wasn't long ago that no vehicle right from the dealership could do it, even the older Rubicon's needed bigger lifts and tires than what they came with. So wining video full of complains. What happened 15 years ago or even 20 year ago that Rubicon trail still there and people drove trough it with more basic tech on more basic cars?. So, because now you have a off road build factory truck like the Wrangler Rubicon that doesn't means the none Rubicon could make it with or with out style. I think today's standard by journalist / car review people are to high on the point that aren't realistic. You don't need a $60K + build rig to do a trail. You may need to watch 4WD action channel from Australia and see how a stock SUV and a Isuzu pickup truck with just tires (not oversize) 31 inch can keep up and take the challenge way worst than a Rubicon trail. Just need skills, equipment and commitment, not a Jeep Rubicon with all the gadget.

    • @AndyLights
      @AndyLights 4 роки тому +12

      also its relatively easy to just engage all locker, disconnect the swaybar and just drive over the obstacle. Its way more fun when you have to WORK hard to pick the correct line, to drive this line. I think its the best part of offroading is when its challenging. Not when you just drive whenever.

    • @iduimovic
      @iduimovic 4 роки тому +9

      @@AndyLights totally agree. Its like making off-road for dummies. Make you less pilot and you wont develop skills. Same with all the new driving aids on new vehicles. The Rubicon has multiple lines through most of the obstacles suitable for different levels of vehicles, and the gnarliest obstacles have bypasses. If you take the easier lines you can do it in many stock 4x4s. Jeep did it in Cherokee Trailhawks with only the addition of rock rails. Very little difference in the Sahara and the Rubicon - locking diffs, 3.21 vs 4.10 gears and tires (which can be changed). The fact is, the Rubicon is overkill for all but the most difficult trails and rocks. With better tires, the Sport and the Sahara will go 90% of the places the Rubicon will, and for a lot less money.

      The Sahara rims are bigger. The tires are mild.
      Put some 33x10.5-12.5R15 siped mudders on any 4WD Wrangler and it could do the Rubicon Trail. Even the YJ/TJ 2.5L and/or Sahara were pretty capable on rocky trails. Remove the YJ trackbars and anti-swaybar for offroading. 30-31" siped mudders complement stockers well.
      All the Sahara needs is decent tires and decent recovery gear. All 4WD JKs/JLs have come with BrakeLock, Quadracoil, and at least a 2.72:1 4Low. They're all ridiculously capable for crawling most trails, in the right hands.

Sahara has 3:72 gears, sport has 3:21. because the sport is less money, you will have more money to spend on things like lifts, bumpers, tires, engine and exhaust mods. when i bought my jk in 2014, the Sahara had the gearing, and leather and the sound system over the sport, that was about it. if i would have got the factory tow package i would have gotten the 3:72 gears. with the JL's thing might have changed but most likely not.
      if you want the "whole package" get a Rubicon, if you want to make the Jeep your own and not brake the bank doing it, get an upscale sport B (power windows, AC, Stereo upgrades ect) or if you want to save all the money you can get an entry level jeep with no power anything and a manual transmission and build what you want from the ground up.

    guys...you gotta stop equating a part time 4wd system with having a center locker. There is a really big difference between a center differential and an input/output drive coupler. In the case of the Sahara, it either has commend-trac with the NV241 GII part time transfer case, or Select-Trac with the MP3022 Part time with auto function. In the case of the former, it's just a collar that locks the front output to the rear output. In the case of the later the front output is connected to the rear output by way of a clutch pack that can bind and unbind as needed so that the computer can command torque to the front axle when slip is detected. Neither of these have a center differential, and neither are full time 4wd. The difference here being a full time 4wd system with a center differential is always sending torque to both axles, where an auto system like the MP3022 sends torque to the front only as commanded by the computer or the user. It's like a reverse crossover system, but with 4 low as well. Hope Tommy is feeling better. That's no fun, props to keeping at the job.

      This. Fun videos guys (although clearly not AS fun in this one), but this needs to be tightened up in future content. 6:22 in the video. The Wrangler Rubicon does not have a center differential (and neither does the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro recently seen in another video), and thus no center differential locking ability. The advantage of having a center differential (be it limited slip, TorSen, 50/50, or otherwise) is to allow for on-road, full-time AWD performance. Transfer case ≠ center differential or center locker.

    I would like to add some perspective, in 1981 I drove around most of Australia before it was tarmac in an old Land Rover (before it was called a 'Defender'), and then in the mid-1980s for four years I got paid (but not much) to drive old British Bedford M type (4x4) trucks on overland expeditions with 20-25 paying passengers in the back from London to Kathmandu (3 months) and London to Johannesburg (5 months) and all around South America (5 months driving). For that kind of trip, getting through the rough stuff was a challenge and the huge relief to be back on a smooth road surface or even graded gravel was the goal. I recently bought a used 2018 JL Sahara with nearly all the extras and I can choose to get a lift and so on but I have no desire to go rock hopping and it's extremely capable anyway out of the box. Ok yes, I secretly wanted a Rubicon mostly for those diff locks and electronically disconnecting sway bar, but could not justify the extra money, and the limited-slip differential (aka anti-spin) will most probably be enough. The average speed of a vehicle on the Rubicon Trail is rumored to be less than human walking pace. Hmmm. But talking to the sales guy he said 'but people like to do it for fun' and I get that, I did Hells Revenge last year in an ATV and yes it was lots of fun but for my sole daily driver but still trail-ready ride I wanted something more comfortable, modern with a Bluetooth and a backup camera and yet still capable if needed. Mostly I'm still with my 1980s self that the rough stuff is something to get through and out the other side. I've been on washboard roads where it's better to go faster to smooth out the intensity of the vibrations or watch as the screws holding the dashboard together start to unscrew themselves. My 1981 self crossing Queensland and the Northern Territory in Australia dodging road trains would have loved the Sahara.

    Hey guys, I have a modded Wrangler JK "Sahara" that could do the Rubicon trail. That part of the trail in the video is like some of our hydro line gravel roads in Canada! Although I would have bought a Rubicon in retrospect they are expensive and the Wrangler Sport is cheaper (like 10-15K on average). I have lifted my JKU (Sahara), I have 35" tires, agreed that the side steps are useless off road so in my case long gone which I replaced with rock rails. The thing is you can equip any Jeep (and other vehicles) to include lockers, lift and bigger tires, winch etc etc. The reality is stock tires off the lot (31") are too small for hitting harder trails, you will belly drag all over the place! So it really doesn't matter what they come with stock (including Rubi).. drive them until the warranty is up then upgrade!
