- Franklin Gibbs is experiencing a kind of hell that, unfortunately, many people can relate to: addiction. A man who prides himself on self-control, with one pull of slot machine arm, Franklin now finds himself attached to a one-armed bandit. In this week's episode of the Key of Imagination, we're going to be looking at the Twilight Zone episode, "The Fever." We'll talk about whether or not Franklin can be considered a tragic figure in the Aristotelian sense; we'll take a look at what might be happening to Franklin on a psychological level; and I'll reveal to you my moment of awe. We're walking our way through The Twilight Zone and using it to learn more about life. So, if you're interested, join us on this journey with Rod Serling through the fifth dimension. There's always room for more.

No show did a better job than The Twilight Zone at generating awe and wonder within its audience. It just so happens that awe is exactly what we need in these difficult, divisive times. So, join me, Joe Meyer, and let's walk through the fifth dimension with Rod Serling. Along the way, we'll discuss big questions and relate them back to our Twilight Zone episodes.

Welcome to our community of people who love the Twilight Zone. Consider joining us on this pilgrimage through the fifth dimension. There’s always room for more.
I love this episode! Everett Sloane gives a fantastic performance. He was made to play Franklin.
You’re right. He actually does a really good job of creating this fairly complex figure who is both unlikeable but you do feel some pity for him. Good point.
The voice of the slot machine is the best special effect in the entire series.
It is actually kinda' fun--in an odd way. It creates this distortion in the audio of the episode that is unique, to say the least. It's right up there with June Foray's dubbing of the girl's voice in "The Bewitchin' Pool" and hearing Jack Warden in "The Lonely" say, "robutt." There's something about these moments that just break the fourth wall. 😆
This isn’t one of my favorite episodes of TZ but I do think it’s one of the most thought provoking.
I really enjoyed your break down of it and loved the wisdom in your conclusion.
I agree. It's one of those episodes that you have to put in a little work to really dig into, but when you do, there are definitely some important themes to explore. And thank you for the kind words.
This episode makes me glad I'm not into gambling 🤣
You and me both. I’ve only known people through friends who have struggled with gambling addictions. It can be incredibly destructive.
