    I always thought the twist was bittersweet. The world the main characters come from was a reflection of the Cold War in the 50’s and definitely a reference to McCarthyism. I interpreted the ending that they were headed to “modern day” Earth, where everything was also on the brink of destruction. An “out of the frying pan, into the fire” sort of interpretation.

      Terry T. Error: Walter probably isn't going to. He said he was reviewing the first 31 episodes of The Twilight Zone, which is most of Season 1. But To Serve Man is a Season 3 episode, so he's not gonna review it this year. If he decided to make this an annual thing in order to review the entire series it will take him 5 years to do so.

    I really liked the twist that they were not escaping from Earth, but rather TO Earth. I personally am tired of all the stories of mankind destroying themselves. Yes, many of them are very good and I enjoy quite a few, yes they are good to transmit a message to protect our future, but they have been done sooooooooo many times that is boring now, and kinda preachy too, not to mention its an easy plot to take advantage off, which can easily make the story come out as lazy.
    I like that here they choose a different path (even if it is just at the twist), makes the story a lot mroe original to me, and a lot more refreshing.
    Great episode.

  • @hayleyelise7144
    @hayleyelise7144 3 роки тому +15

    I’m so glad you illuminated and delved into the intricacies of the set design, lighting, shot composition, angles, and other cinematographic elements which contributed to the aberrant, other-worldly setting and the constant, incipient tension underlying this episode. These subtle inclusions retrospectively establish and embolden the strangeness of this unnamed planet without prematurely revealing the alien nature of these people and their doomed home. The effectiveness and potency of this final twist is augmented through the analogous construct of having two countries on the brink of atomic war, considering the societal zeitgeist that permeated the collective consciousness at the time this episode was produced. Despite never explicitly stating the names of the countries involved in this atomic arms race, the audience assumes and projects their current reality onto the delineated skeleton of this episode’s narrative arc, which allows for the final realization to feel sudden and significant. Therefore, this ending can be interpreted as cautionary, imparting upon the audience that persistence in the continuation of Cold War fervor will ultimately lead to destruction, with the prospect of escape solely confined to fictitious realms of The Twilight Zone.

    In addition to the more evident discussions on the possibility for reciprocity in nuclear confrontation, there are also elicited conversations in this episode appertaining to the application and ambiguity of human ingenuity. The ending itself demonstrates a beautiful juxtaposition between the ability of human invention to provide salvation and protection from harm and its capacity to indiscriminately destroy all life. During a time of great discovery and the elevation of humanity to space travel and beyond, the dark, morbid side of technology shadows the light of promise for the betterment of society and the glory of invention. Living in a time of such contradictory simultaneity is perfectly captured in the final moments of this episode, as it warns of earth following the same trajectory of allowing the purpose of eventual interplanetary travel to be escape from what humanity has wrought upon itself.

    As always, I’m so glad to be able to have these insightful conversations inspired by The Twilight Zone with you, Walter!

In truth, science fiction has as a central purpose a necessity to provide commentary on the events of its time via the allegories contained within.
      That these stories remain relevant all these years later speaks to the truth that I mentioned first...that of mankind's inability...or even abject and defiant refusal...to learn and grow from the mistakes of its own past.

Having said that there was an Easter egg towards the end where the two families had knocked out the dude with the glasses who tried to stop them, and we saw the craft they were to fly in, and it looked like a classic flying saucer, not something really you'd see on earth, you'd expect more of a rocket ship type craft.
    Because everything seemed so normal, families, lemonade, card games, you'd think they were just Earth human beings, although those phones they used looked a bit futuristic, so if you watched it again you could perhaps spot more clues as to their real identities! Absolutely loved this episode ❤

    There were subtle and some not subtle clues about final revalation all throughout the episode. I mean, just look around Sturka's house and notice some objects that are there and you will see what I mean. He even uses one of them at one point, probably to give us a clue.

    Actually, producers of That' 70s Show have said that they were inspired by this episode, among other things, when they came up with the idea of camera in between characters and going around from one to the other.

    I wonder if that through the glass coffee table shot was the basis for a scene in mel brooks' high anxiety. In brooks' version, nurse diesel (cloris leachman) and dr. montague (harvey cormin) are scheming, having tea and biscuits while a hapless camera tries to view the scene from below the glass coffee table. Every time something is put back down, the camera gets blocked and has to hunt for a new angle, building to a frenzy.

    I hope you do a review about an episode about a writer. I think it's called the writer, not sure.
    It's about a writer who gets caught with their secretary. The writer throws the script in the fire. Then they rewrite the event and the event changes.
    The twist ends up being one of the few times the shows ends with a good ending. Always appreciated by me.
