Retired Air Force of 21 years. My early years I was a wild child and had a knack for oversleeping. I would get a talking to and a letter of counceling. The worst was that it affected my annual performance report early on which delayed a promotion. I made up for it later, but this behavior of mine was common to younger airmen who just slept through the alarm clock. When I got older and was " in charge" I was sympathetic to most and spoke to them in a friendly manner. That method of leadership worked for me rather than being a tyrant. Basically same treatment as any civilian job. Sometimes though the airmen just were not cut out for the military lifestyle and in reality were not successful while being on the outside either. Some people are just lazy, non conformists, and just plain negative. Just look around you. There are all kinds.

Felt that. But nothing wrong with being nonconformist.
yeah, but that was the Air Force. In the real military, simply 'sleeping through the alarm' is unthinkable and certainly not common.

In 1999 I was an Army Captain and Company Commander stationed at Fort Hood, TX. I had a soldier go AWOL and never returned (deserted). Fast forward to 2011. I am now a Lieutenant Colonel and am stationed in Korea. One morning I get a call from a JAG officer from the States asked if I remembered the soldier who had deserted back in 1999. I sat back in my chair and told the JAG officer that I remembered the soldier VERY well. The soldier was stopped by the police in Alabama for expired tags and was subsequently identified as having deserted the Army in 1999. The JAG officer told me to be prepared to testify at his court martial. I didn't have to. I never learned the outcome of the soldier's court martial.

Oversimplified ccccccc:
Generals dont step that far down. Just so you know.
Its a joke
This video is very accurate. One thing I will tell you is that the Navy and Marine Corps is even more strict on punishments than the Army most of the time. My last command was a joint command. We had servicemembers of all 5 branches (Space Force did not exist when I left). There were some who would repeatedly show up late. The soldiers were often given extra duty and PT. The sailors and marines were warned the first time and given severe PT and extra duty. The 2nd time they were late they faced the Commanding Officer, who would either discharge them from the military or (if she was feeling generous), would take their rank, 1/2 month's pay for 45 days, 30 days restriction and 45 days of extra duty. If a sailor or marine was dumb enough to be late a third time, they were gone.

I mean yeah, consider what would ahppen if ppl joined the army just to get pay and benefits, but leaves if they get deployed. soldiers usually contracted to make sure that they stay in the army and dont just leave for a war.

@@danielr1753 When you join you sign a contract stating you will follow the rules of the UCMJ. For all intents and purposes, UCMJ is military law. They are breaking the law. Therefore, they are sent to prison. Is this one hard to understand?

The Army and Marines (more so in the infantry MOS) will give you max punishment under UCMJ most of the time. The unit I was in gave people article 15s for missing more than 1 appointment. Being late more than twice. It was harsher if deployed/in training than in garrison.
Had a guy get kicked out in my unit for missing 3 appointments, and being late to movement. Bad conduct, and field grade art 15.
I've done the Awol bit countless times and at the end of my time came out with a full honorable discharge under medical conditions. Lol. Who ever say's bucking the system doesn't work is a Sucker.
fantastic yeah that's why I said most of the time. And sometimes the military doesn't care about the situation.
Navy, marines and coast guard have "Unauthorized absence" instead of AWOL.
I like how all of these military videos are being recommended now
When I went from sub school to the boat, I applied for thirty days of leave. The leave extended my report date, and the new report date never made it to the command. They thought I was AWOL, but never took the initiative to try and contact me. When I got to the command, they tried really hard to mast me, but my leave chit and orders in hand reflected that I was actually there a week early, so I thought I was ok, but the authority within the command continuously did whatever they could to make sure that I never make rank again, and succeeded. I spent seven and a half years as an E4, even though by the time I got out I had fourteen collateral duties and was being tracked on Chief of the Watch as an E4. The moral of the story is; the Navy will make mistakes, no matter what, and you will be the one to pay for them, even if it doesn't reflect on paper.
I'd have contacted a military lawyer.
In hindsight, you could have refused mast since you know you went through all the right channels and you weren't at fault. Though, from there the CO can either choose to drop the case, or send it to Court Martial.

I have a story about an AWOL soldier who left for 9 years.
The year is 2010, I arrive at my unit in Fort Hood. After a few weeks of meeting people, I met Franco (the AWOL soldier). Everyone knew him in our unit because he was facing Court Marshall for being AWOL. Franco was there six months prior to me arriving and was there roughly a year more before he was seen by the Court. In a crazy twist of events, Franco's case gets thrown out because our unit took to long to process his UCMJ paperwork. In Renturn Franco gets back pay from the Army, has to stay and complete his contract but gets discharged for failing multiple PT Test. I think the last one he passed was back in 2000.

I went AWOL from Fort Benning in 2002. My mother’s health started to deteriorate quickly. I stayed with her for 5 months until she eventually passed away. I turned myself in at Fort Knox the very next day. I received an OTH discharge. The worst part was that they gave me an RE Code 4.
Great after care benefits.... I know some homeless vets that would disagree
99% WOULD DISAGREE
Not all Veterans are eligible for benefits.
Caleb Cali I think you’re supposed to serve like 20 years to retire with benefits, otherwise to get them you need to be medically discharged
After service health care and allowances require you to apply and provide documentation.
Being homeless is a large scale socioeconomic issue...not a "these poor veterans aren't being taken care of" issue.
I had multiple injuries, nerve damage, joint dislocation, and mental health issues from service...all I did was apply, provide my medical records, and I receive health care and a monthly stipend to offset my inability to do most jobs due to lingering injury. It's easy, you just need to do it. For vets pre 1990, yes it can be difficult due to a lack of electronic records. For everyone post Desert Storm and 9/11, there is no excuse but that you just didn't do it.
The post 9/11 vets complaining they don't get what they need, is usually them complaining they don't get disability. Which is arguably their own fault for not documenting medical.issues with their doctor...no record, no proof, no benefits. That's how it works. And every single service member in the last 30 years knows this. Everyone before then...they have somewhat of an excuse.
If a Veteran incurs a service-connected condition (let say hearing loss), the VA is required to provide continuing care for that condition. It is not carte blanche care. Serve your term and get out, well you are on your own unless you have a serve-connected condition(s). Serve until retirement, then you get additional health benefits. Do you actually believe that all the homeless vets are actually veterans? Its a common scam to draw sympathy.

Yes, these punishments are all possibilities for being AWOL. However, Jail time and Discharges are rare. Typically, on your first offense, as long as you return before the 30 day limit, you would normally get to stand before the Commanding Officer and your punishment would be reduction in rank one pay grade, loss of pay for up to 45 days and on base restriction or in the case of the US Navy, restriction to the ship.

only decent pay while in service, after service they drop you like its hot.
lol
Haha sometimes while in service they just might not pay you at all. Better hope your pay inquiry doesn't magically disappear again.
@@noticedruid4985 that's bad
Yep it is. Haha it's not a common occurrence it's very rare, but if it does happen the paperwork is terrible and it's very easy for your pay inquiries to get lost as it goes through the steps to finance office but that's the same for most paperwork sadly. In my last year of service I was without pay for way over 6 or so months it was terrible. Oh and you don't have the choice to stop working since your not getting paid. Haha
As a former soldier, this seemed to miss the fact that very few desertions are actually pursued. The military usually just waits for them to show up somewhere or get pulled over for a speeding ticket.
Literally just watch the end of the video, they did address that.
@@patheticbread6861 This is the internet, you can't expect me to be thorough.
Our friend circle in my early 20s had an acquaintance that deserted the Army after a couple months out of basic training, I barely knew the guy but I think nothing even ended up happening to him
When I served in the USMC back in the 90s. I had one guy who went AWOL back home to W. Virginia. Met him on Facebook in 2012. All they did was mail him a general discharge with VA benefits. Over 90 percent of the time, Uncle Sam isn't going to stress on pursuing, like the video said.
And even in WW1 and WW2 we only went after 1 guy for Desertion. Because he demanded it, he forced Eisenhower to execute him. The Navy/USMC hasn't even executed any US prisoner since 49, 1849, Pre-Civil War. Army and Airforce are the only ones that execute their personnel, USN/USMC for nearly 200 years just lock them away forever making gravel because chit is complicated
Depends on your command. If your gone longer than 30 days its supposed to be a felony
I knew a guy who went AWOL for seven days and no one noticed. His military supervisor went on leave for 2 weeks. The next supervisor in the chain of command was a DoD civilian employee. He told the civilian who doesn’t have access to our leave system that he was going on leave too. He came back before his military supervisor. No one was the wiser. Genius.
The reality of things is that every branch does it differently. I was army. I was awol for 35 days. I was never in jail. I was sent to a unit that was for awol soldiers. There was a guy there tha was awol for over 15 years. We were there long enough to be processed out with an other than honorable discharge. We were given the option to stay in or discharge. It wasn’t even really that severe. We basically cleaned up the base for a month and partied with the females on the second floor of our housing
He forgot to mention that there is no statute of limitations on desertion. In the mid-eighties, the Navy decided that it was best to send deserters back to the command from which they deserted to get adjudicated. I was on my first ship in 1985 when the Shore Patrol delivered up a guy who deserted in 1972. He had ticked off his mother-in-law and she turned him in. We didn't have anywhere to keep him so he was "confined" to the ship, but as soon as he could, he shimmied down a mooring line was never seen again.
I’m in the military and in the navy we call it Unauthorized Absence (UA)
That’s still AWOL. Article 86
Mostlyharmless1985 ok? I didn’t say it wasn’t.

I went AWOL many times in the middle of combat. You ever join mid game and your team is getting decimated?
SovietTricycle yeah 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️😂😂😂
I have a few family members who served in the military (my grandfathers, great-aunt, and uncle), but I'm not sure the question of whether or not I'd go AWOL would even apply to me. I remember getting a call from the Armed Forces when I turned 18, asking if I'd participate in a phone survey. I did, and was asked questions about each of the five branches. Then, as the final question, they asked me for my height and weight. I answered honestly, and there was a pause on the other end of the line, followed by, "......Do you have any friends who'd be interested in joining?"
"The United Stated Military has long prided itself on being an all-volunteer force." Suuuuuure.
It has been since after the Vietnam war
Compared to other militaries, sure. But, considering that ended not even 50 years ago, I wouldn't necessarily call it a long time.
During most of its history, the US military was an all-volunteer force. Historically, the US Army was a constabulary force with minimal troop levels. The Civil War and WWI the draft was imposed expressly to meet manpower requirements of those wars. The peacetime draft only existed after 1940 until rescinded at the end of Vietnam war.
As it is all volunteer people who sign the contract should know what they are getting into, as such a draft is much different than volunteering.
Wipple Wopple oh no you mean a country forced its citizens to fight in order to ensure their own. Freedoms. How sad 😢
Atleast those soldiers signed up for it.. some countries conscript people off their free will zz

Yes I would desert, America owes me reparations
All the recommendation in UA-cam are now about "Getting Drafted" , "World War" and now this XD... Sure UA-cam algorithm knows what's up
yes well...
Its what people are searching up.
My dads side of the family is all Army/Navy/Coast Guard and they want me to go in. My uncle (who knows me best) was like “she’s not gonna make it, I’d give her a day” and I totally agree with him. Some people can take on this lifestyle others can’t😂
I spent 7 years in the navy on subs I would have done 30 but alas a chain broke during a torpedo reload and crushed my spine
Info graphics Show: what happens when you go awol
Me after playing days gone: you get hanged
My cousin just went AWOL he refused to deploy out to Iran
Whaaaaa???
If you're late for formation you're not Awol you're UA unauthorized abesence. Its not the same nor does it carry same punishment. Former Marine i saw this often.
Had a dude get UA because he was stuck in vegas and couldn't get a cab back to palms. . . SgtMaj offered to personally pick him up lol
I was late ONE time as a BNP, worst thing ever. I got smoked until end of the duty day and had to show up an hour early to 530 PT for a month, I was NEVER late again lol
I was deemed AWOL at one point, prior to even shipping for basic training. I signed up for the reserves but my grandfather, my most immediate family had become terminally ill and I was told that I could simply change my ship date at a later time.
I certainly found out later that it was a lie, I was pulled over by an undercover and I had a warrant out for my arrest, I spent 3 days in jail and was sent to Fort Sill. I’d have to look up my exact discharge code but I’m a part of a fairly rare bunch that was able to re-enlist and was given a fairly decent sum due to another’s negligence. Mine is a rare story though, this basically NEVER occurs and the person that gave me advice was stripped of rank and discharged
Ryder21 when was this, as long as you don’t ship they can’t charge you with awol because your not part of the military, I seen it all the time kids changed their mind and don’t go. No harm, even seen some in your case just get another contract for a later date. And I know for a fact cops won’t look for you. It’s pretty much if you get in trouble and the run your name.
@@michaelvasquez1988 not applicable to the reserves. Service starts on the day you swear in. Your benefits kick in, and you become active reserve. AD soldiers can change their minds before shipping.
I don’t like how youtube is recommending this so close to WW3
How do you know that WW2 is coming?
@@BitchChill Probably beacause it already happened
Before my first tour of Iraq, a female Soldier fled to avoid deployment. She came back shortly before we returned. The Rear Detachment Commander gave her a lot of extra duty, and non-judicial punishment, because she returned.
She actually missed two deployments, as I deployed with another unit (she was supposed to deploy in my group), and then she missed deploying with our actual home unit. About 99% of the unit wanted her kicked out, with a Bad Conduct discharge, or locked up. (or all three)
I had an incident that led to 72 days UA from the Navy and they banged me up with 21 days brig and hard labor, an additional number of months in restriction holding barracks, and reduction back to airman nothing and then was sent back to my squadron. It was all over a misunderstanding, me misunderstanding the power dynamic I was laboring under
Never join the military, wars for Greed
Had a soldier that went AWOL in South Korea. He was caught 60 days later, dishonorably discharged in 2 weeks, and sent to Ft. Leavenworth for 2 years.

"Would you ever desert in the army?" Bold of you to assume that the majority of people would ever want to join.
I'm going to enlist
Here come the “Did any one get this recommended all of a sudden” comments
Giving someone an Article 15 for AWOL (3-29 Days) was one of the most hated things I had to do
I was scanning the comments looking for the famous "Artical 15"
I didn't mind it, I welcomed getting issued mine.
Is confinement in a military jail more similar to civilian jail or solitary confinement? Not able to find a clear answer. You're not thrown into a dark room for 30 days straight right ?
@@commandohazelnuts not that I know of. You are stripped of all your rank and what not while serving though.
@@commandohazelnuts oh sorry. To answer your question, it's like a civilian jail.

I knew a guy that went AWOL while I was in the Navy, he went AWOL so he can go to a chocolate festival in Chicago and ended up getting jumped and robbed before he got there so he came back.
I've always wondered. What happens if someone is said to be awol but they were kidnapped? And were kidnapped the entire time?
Can we just give this man a round of applause. Three videos in a day most of the time. Well done mate.
I could only think of one situation where I might desert if I find myself in the military, and it’s one I’m sure few would fault me for: if I’m ordered to commit a war crime, and even then only if there was no other way I could avoid having to go through with it (i.e. faking illness). The Nuremberg Defense (“just following orders”) doesn’t hold up in court even if the alternative is being shot by your own side for refusing, after all.
It really makes a huge difference if you're in an active combat zone or not. It also makes a difference if its a wartime army or a peacetime army.
