- As the weather warms up, it’s not uncommon to find more Broncos and Jeeps with their doors and tops removed. In fact, the popularity of this feature has driven the demand for more open adventure vehicles for decades, which ultimately led Ford to offer the new Bronco with fully removable doors and tops. But how practical is it to drive without them?
Matt sets out on this episode to answer for himself whether the removable doors and top on his Bronco are features worth utilizing or just gimmicks to get people to buy them. Clearly, having open air in an off-road vehicle is nothing new, and the freedom that comes with it can be exhilarating to enthusiasts. But taking off your doors and top can have its downsides as well.
Throughout this episode, Matt shows us the proper process for removing your hard top and doors on the new Bronco, then takes us on a test-drive to describe some tips and tricks to driving without them, and finally gives us his own verdict on the practicality of driving around town and the trails in an open air vehicle. We hope this video helps you decide if removing your doors and top is worth it or not.

If you’re concerned about taking the top and doors off your Bronco, maybe you should trade it in for a Honda Civic or something
What do you drive tough guy?
A bronco
Maybe you should mind your business Karen.
Some people like myself are independent, although I'm not a small guy by any means just over 6' 230+ lbs that rear piece I'm told being 80+ lbs is a concern... Nobody wants to go gung ho and damage it. I Haven't got my Bronco WildTrak yet, but I just recently got my scheduled for production date email from Ford so I'm thinking I'll need to invest in one of these roll n jacks. The storage opinion is a huge plus- I'm hoping it'll raise the piece high enough over the front part of my Bronco to save big time on storage in my garage
@@IBleedEvanescence Yeah its not that heavy, just awkward to handle.
I’ve owned Jeeps since I was 18, I think this video was for someone who has never had an open body style 4x4. My bronco is super quiet compared to my old Jeeps. Here’s a tip to all of you new to open body style vehicles: if it doesn’t fit in your pocket and it’s valuable and you don’t want to carry it with you everywhere, don’t bring it
Yeah people are soooo finicky and spolied these days I had a 2009 s2k and had that car for 14 years just sold it. That little car was all analog and had all kinds of noises didn't bother me , got a BD Sasquatch very quiet and drives so good I have no idea what people are talking about with noise and the stereo is not the best but it's not horrible all the complaints have been from people that come from I'm guessing newer vehicles ofcourse so you can see how things have changed with all these creature comforts over the years
Nice vid! Thanks
You can also buy Console Vault that fits centor console and back trunk area underneath mat and lock up your valuables...Front has combo and rear has a key lock
I’ve been top off, and tube doors for three weeks now and loving it! I got carabiners to clip in a backpack and two other bags with ponchos in them. It’s my daily driver, and I just lock up stuff. I did by the center council safe to be extra safe. So far so good on stuff not being taken. This is why I bought this thing though.
In case anybody was wondering, here's another pro tip for you. You're more exposed riding on a motorcycle than you are riding in a car.
It's a fun, lifestyke vehicle. Anything that can have its doors and tops removed isn't inherently safe.
I, for one, have been a long time Jeep owner with kids in car seats and booster seats. I've driven for years with the doors and top off driving in LA traffic and on freeways both for my daily commute and with the kids to go to the zoo or my parents or the beaches.
We love driving topless and doorless with a mesh sunshade. We use a tonneau cover on the rear, carry extra sweatshirts, jackets and blankets for when it gets cold in the evening, and just enjoy nature.
We've driven off road and the dust and dirt is par for the course. But we don't high speed wheel in the Jeep. We mostly crawl or drive in 4lo.
To each his own, though. Top on or top off, doors on or doors off, just have fun.
I’m in SoCal and my top pretty much stays off from March/April until about Nov/Dec. I take my doors off for events or to do some moderate to hard wheeling.
We had jeeps and very rarely took the doors off. We just got 2 Bronco's and mine is the 4 door, hubby got the 2 door. My doors will be staying on, except for rare occasions. Hubby will take his off a lot more! I just do not like being that exposed! Ours are going to be outfitted for camping and trails, we are not by a beach. We drove mine back from a dealer in Texas to Louisiana, it was a little noisy, but nothing like our jeeps, we could actually hold a conversation and hear the music! I just got her yesterday, so I am excited for the weekend!
I'm a Jeep person, not a Bronco person, but I do have both a Wrangler and a Gladiator. My Wrangler is stripped down sometime near the end of April with tube doors and will remain that way until the end of September. I am fortunate that I have a nice climate controlled garage to keep the Jeeps parked at night or on rainy days. The Gladiator is sort an on demand type of strip down. I might strip it down for 5-7 days and then put it back together because of the weather or whatever. I do have a partial vehicle cover for the Gladiator so a small rain storm doesn't force me to try and put it all back together again. Heck I'll even take the Jeep stripped down to work because why not? Open air driving like that is an experience only a small number of vehicles can offer.
If you don mind me asking. What Brand cover are you using? I luv having doors and roof off my JT but it rains here all the time. So I'm back and forth a lot. I've been looking for a cover and reviews on actually fitting and covering door opening are not good.
@@Scatman445 One big change I made this year was spending a lot of time online hunting down 2 sets of premium cloth soft tops, one for the wrangler and one for the Gladiator. So now both vehicles have soft tops and getting the tops off on both is super simple. I leave the top up on the wrangler and it acts like bikini top. I do have an actual cover for the gladiator to cover up the cab section and that seems to work for when it gets parked outside. If it's lightly raining, like a day like today, I can still ride around in the wrangler.
Thank you for this vid.. It was very helpful for me. I should be getting my Bronco by the end of Feb and am really looking forward to spring and taking doors and top off.
Very informative post for a newbie. Thanks
Great video and great tips! Thanks, man!
Great review and video...good considerations!
How cool is that. I haven't had the chance to take doors and back top off yet on mine. Only had it a week though and its still close to 100 degrees out
One thing I like to do is run a cleaning clothe across my interior to clean it after I offroad. Looks like that hasn't been done in quite a while.
You learn to travel light when rolling with the doors off/half doors/top off. Bring a small back pack for valuables. Life long jeep owner and enjoyed the vid.
Tell me you've never had a jeep before without telling me you've never had a jeep before. Your ride looks nice, enjoy it!
I had a hard top on my original order for my 2021 but Ford was having issues and I had to switch to a soft top or continue to wait. I was already at a year wait so I went with the soft top but Ford threw in the hardtop ready kit for free.
I now am so happy this happened. The soft top is so easy to take down with nothing to store accept vinyl windows.
Literally takes 3 minutes to take completely down one person only. It takes about 7 minutes to put back on and is a one person job.
Anyone else notice granny in the Range Rover checking out the bronco?
I have a 22 Soft top Bronco. My doors are off and the top is down. But I bought the factory pipe doors. It doesn’t give you anymore security but you can keep large items on the floorboard if necessary.
Great Build! Well done and very informative video. Random question... which aftermarket antenna is on the Bronco? Good reception or using satellite radio?
💯 good call on the sweater 🤙
I love this car. This Raptor is my dream car.
As a first responder, Ive seen more than once arms and legs pinned under a 4WD vehicle when it rolls. Bad idea. No one plans for the crash. Be safe.
I think it will look rad with tube doors
Where do you purchase the twist tabs on back on Bronco for rear removal?
Ford makes a inexpensive tonneau vinyl cover for the trunk area that provides some security. At least from view. It has straps going over the tailgate though. But you can just fold down the rear seats for storage access. Just removing the front doors has been much more practical for me instead of all four. And the tube doors are great too.
Nice video, where did you get your front fenders as I don't think your Bronco is a Raptor. Thanks!
It's a Raptor. It came from the factory like that.
My Bronco is too tall to fit into my Garage! Regularly drive with the roof down (softtop makes that super easy) but havent taken the doors off yet. Your Raptor is FKN SICK BTW
Don’t feel too bad, the Raptor doesn’t fit in the garage at all 😂 and thanks!
Ford did it right with the door design. Im not a fan of having the doors off on my wrangler, but the stock full door looks stupid with the top off.
Thanks for this... new viewer, new Wildtrak owner. That exhaust note on your ride, so sweet!! what do you have?
That’s a bronco raptor
Yup just stock exhaust!
Where can I purchase the jack to take the top off?
Get callouts on practicality. Curious what sun shade you have?
fender delete on a raptor would look siiiick
What a clever design, where on earth did they come up the idea for for all of those levers and latches haha.
Ya I was thinking the same thing. Also wounder why we have not seen a lawsuit yet
@@frankconsidine5989😢
Please let me know where do I order the shade screen
I never understood why the raptors weren't v8s. Hopefully they drop the R version like they did for the f150
Get a diabolical cargo cover to secure valuables in the rear and the BRONCOVER to cover your vehicle so you don’t have to keep taking tops and doors off in case bad weather
Hey can anyone tell me what that cross bar piece that he has on the d-pillars? U can see it more clearly 5:50 (the black cross bar/roll cage)
IMO this feature, especially the doors off is for trail use, while off road. Depending on how you like to drive, it’s at your own risk. ✌🏼
What is this model and trim?
Do the doors and the top fit inside the car in the back … in case I want to take them with me somewhere to put them back on …. Like camping or work et ..
I’d like to take the removed doors and top with me inside the bronco ..!!
I’m sure you could physically fit them in there somehow, but I’d really advise against it. They’re really easy to scratch, and without doors on, they could fall out of the Bronco if not secured properly.
YES the doors are designed to fit in the cargo area,...but it is a super tight fit with NO cargo and the door bags would be a must to prevent scratches.
Hey - Nice video. Thank you for posting. I've got a 2022 Outer Banks "maul crawler," and I totally dig it. Haven't even taken off the front roof panels off yet. Will have to check that out.
“Unique” laughs in jeep Wrangler for the last 20 years ;)
What mesh cover do you have in this video?
Spider Web Shade
Are the door covers extra from ford? An accessory for the doors?
Door covers can be purchased from Ford or aftermarket. Mine came from Ford.
I am about to order a bronco. Does anyone know or have more information about changing the color of the grabber handle? I am getting a badlands, and the handles/stitching in that trim is bright orange. I would prefer the blue option, ford offers that on the website when building it. However if I change the handles to blue, would that also make the stitching on the seats blue as well? Or would they stay orange?
I think there might be color options in the "interior" section of the website build and price thingie.
I thought it was much easier to do this... The soft top is a good option but still a PITA.
My concerns after taking delivery of my Bronco were leaks developing from seal wear after repeated removal of top sections. Very Cool feature but I doubt my doors and or top will ever be removed. Otherwise I absolutely love my Bronco.
Seals will not be impacted like older vehicles because of design.
You only live once bro, at least try it top off not doors, its like the coolness of a convertible but in the wilderness whoooaaa haha
Lol bruh. I keep my laptop in a 35l backpack in my passenger floorboard I’m in outside sales and have my top and doors off from march to October nothing has ever fallen out of my Jeep or pockets my calls work fine this is insanity.
I wish you could just latch them down inside the bronco … except for the doors … but slide the doors inside all the way to the back … to the trunk …
That way you don’t have to remove anything heavy …. The removal parts just latch out or inside and go to the back … no lifting … anc then you always have them to slide around and latch downwards …. Then nobody can steal out of bronco when I get to the store or anywhere I go … simple and easier to do !
My top comes off all summer long. My doors stay on. I just don’t understand the appeal. I also don’t understand dropping $1300 for tube doors unless one is hard core wheeling.
How many production vehicles are out there that we can remove the top and doors for personal enjoyment and can go off-roading out of the box not made by Jeep? If we want quiet on-road practicality, we would drive sedans and min-vans :D
Noticed you have an Oh Snap 3 Pro on your iPhone - I really like mine after having had it for 6 month.
love your plates: Dessert Chef
What's the name of the twist knobs you have for the large piece of your hard top? thanks!
Headrest grab handles too...
Bunch of stuff
In 5yrs. Never has anything rolled out of my jeep with everything off. Never has anything fallen out of my pocket with everything off. Calls work just fine as a jeep has speakers over your head. I go mudding and use my jeep as a side by side so the interior gets dirty. Everything about this video was intended for the city folks who will never use a jeep or bronco for what it's made for.
OR...it was made as an educational video for people who have never owned a vehicle whose doors and windows come off, and want to learn best practices. WTF do people have to judge and not just move on if the video is not for them.....and if they already opwn a vehicle like this....why would they watch in the first place??
Car jackers will love it.
You could get a Bronco Sport with a sunroof.
That's cool
What is the total weight of all the panels you took off?
They are relatively light, front 2 panels are about 10lbs - not sure on the back one though as I have a 2 door but looking at it I would guess 20-30lbs? They are made out of a real heavy plastic feeling material
I am taking you are from California. This was 11 minutes of crying!
Hey I’m from Cali, but I drive a Jeep and top pretty much stays off weather permitting. Doors come off when I go to events or to do some moderate/hard wheeling. Us Californians are not all the same😅😅
This Bronco is way easier to take the doors off than a Jeep. I was just watching a Jeep video the other day and there was 8 steps to a door. This Bronco shows us there's 3 hinge bolts then a big plug and then lift.

The only "thing" with both Jeep and the Bronco would be the vehicle side of the wiring harness ...i would want a way to keep dust, water and mud or anything else from getting in the connectors.
Forgot to mention…. There’s seemingly less weight, and thus more giddyup!
I had old one
I wouldn't trust those glove box/ console locks for anything.
“Sounds good though” *car shits its pants*
Looking forward to a quiet EV version.
Man I just cannot for the life of me understand how anyone could like them swimming pool sized fenders on the raptor edition broncos....
Hilariously puffy and rediculous
I’m only watching this just in case I win the mega millions otherwise I can’t afford it. But thanks just so I know how to do this
I am glad to see jeep owners chiming in. Everyone talks about these Bronco traits like this is a totally new concept. And everytime I think hasnt this stuff been going on with jeeps for years?
Removing the doors and top actually increases its crash rating
Doors add rigidity to a vehicle.
You must live in California😂🤣 I’m in small town Texas. If someone takes stuff out of our cars they are doing it at their own risk. If anyone sees them, they’ll be disappeared for sure.
If you don't want to remove the top and doors then buy a 4Runner.
450hp?
I don't case about the door care I'm worried about the people insjde
Pro tip - 90% of the vehicles broken into or stolen have doors on and non- removable tops. Use common sense and enjoy life a bit. I put a diabolical slipstream security enclosure in mine and drive topless constantly and park in beautiful crime and homeless free Seattle all the time.
Wow. Just buy a Jeep. Strap your backpack to the seat using the seat belt like the rest of us. Be glad you weren't driving a 1975 version. LOL
I see rust already wow
That’s definitely dirt from Moab, and not rust lol
Bad idea especially if you get in an accident
If somebody wanted your stuff, they would break the windows…it would be better if they didn’t break you stuff as they try to get your other stuff.😊
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
That’s one weird looking jeep
Hear me out it’s almost exactly like a jeep
You're still for more safer than riding a motorcycle. Duuuu!!!!
Jeep looks sooo much better with doors off
This guy complains to much. Once my doors come off for the season they basically stay off. Get yourself a cargo security unit and you're golden.
Just watched a crash test video the other day that showed a Bronco slam into a wall. It folded up like a crushed soda can. Anyone inside would have been dead for sure. The entire vehicle is a crumple zone. Classic Ford death trap.
If people want to die in a faster more efficient way, then let them. Saw one yesterday that had their kids floating around the back seat! I don't care much for convertibles either. If your car manufacturers hadn't done away with wing vent windows in the effort to sell more AC pumps, there would be no need for this door removal nonsense. But, most of these people do it because it looks cool?
Them broncos are Jeep wannabes... but they are nice looking but at the end of the day, it isnt a Jeep. Not even a spot to store the bolts from the top or doors.
You sound jealous. I’m sure you’ve never driven one of these raptors, so I’d advise you to read/watch any review on these raptors……from motortrend, car&driver, hagerty etc etc……they consider it the best factory offroader ever. Lemme guess……they don’t know what they’re talking about huh? Fake news??
Glovebox? Center console? in a plastic bag? Is that really the issue you have with it lol
😂
My bronco has two separate pouches in the tool kit that can hold to door bolts and the top bolts
My custom Bronco build was intended to replace a Range Rover lost in an accident as well as give G Wagon vibes. Not even meant to mimic a Jeep. I have the original year H2 Hummer and thus, Had to have a Bronco.. No regrets with my purchase. To each his own. May own a Jeep someday too.
Go to crash test 30 mile-an-hour dump truck against new vehicles. You will never buy one of those broncos
Broncos are not off roadersThey're just like any other SUV that can only do what they can do I will get a Jeep any day because it's unlimited What you can do and solid axles in the front and back and very reliable and comfort ride on all surface. It All depends on your tires and your suspension this Bronco is not to bad but Remember the old style broncos were their own style not jeep look like now and they had solid axles as well gm had solid axles as well but people keep giving away are jobs to China and democrats
This is just complete ignorance. A bronco can do anything a jeep can do and often better. 😂😂😂
Maybe educate yourself
@sappyjohnson 🤣😭😭😭 You want to be a smart ass. I think you need to educate yourself. I've been around many vehicles throughout my life and have way more Knowledge than you Thanks For You're sorry attitude that makes me like Jeep's better even more. You can take your square Box and break your front axle And replace those flimsy axles all day long And bounce around like a toy on rocks and off road I have 0 issues and Mine can outrun a Camaro and Mustang. Yours can only outrun a grocery gutter
@@sappyjohnson AND The Ford Bronco is made in the USA
The main question is why are you driving a ford.
Poor excuse for a garage… L O L
I hope your heads like sliding on blacktop, way to high of center of gravity.
With Ford going queer, you should just stick will jeep wrangler
Nah we don’t want bronco people coming to the jeep side 💪
