Irish Ferries from Rosslare to Pembroke Dock

- It's time to leave Ireland on the morning ferry from Rosslare Europort. This time I'm choosing to use Irish Ferries, as I've travelled with Stena Line to Fishguard before.
I'm looking forward to seeing what Irish Ferries has to offer, although I'm a bit nervous that the weather is a bit "iffy", so it could be a bumpy crossing. Even so, I've fancied checking out the run into Pembroke Dock through Milford Haven and whatever the weather, I think it is going to be an interesting approach to the UK.
Departure: Rosslare Europort, Republic of Ireland
Destination: Pembroke Dock, Wales, UK
Approx Distance: 165 km / 102 miles
Duration: 4 hrs
Cost (foot passenger): €41,50 / £34.50
Date of Travel: October 2024
Operator: Irish Ferries
Motive power: MS Isle of Innisfree (1991)
Thank you to everybody that watches, likes, comments and subscribes. I really appreciate it!
Hugely enjoyed, Johnny... my grandmother used to live in Neyland and I have so many happy memories of visiting this lovely part of the UK...👍👍👍

Hi Johnny. I’ve recently discovered your channel - love it! I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos. The way you put travel plans together - especially using the railways - to create adventures is brilliant. I plan my adventures in a similar way - sometimes it’s the simple things in life such as watching the world go by from a carriage window; food for the soul. More, please! 😊

Hhm, meringues as part of a fried breakfast. Must say, that's a new one to me. I remember this route from long ago, when Irish Ferries was known as the B & I Line. 1980 to be exact. The ferry got into Pembroke late at night, either just before or just after midnight. What I do recall is that I hadn't too much petrol in my car for the onward journey from Pembroke. I couldn't find an open petrol station, Wales was closed for the night. So I headed east, driving as gently as I could, coasting when I was able. It was a 5.3 litre huge American Plymouth. I expected to conk out at any moment. Much to my relief, I eventually saw the lights of an open place on the outskirts of Haverfordwest.
@@andrewp4172 what a great story! 👍
And of course, thanks too for watching!
You’re a hardy traveller. Great watch as always Johnny.
@@Timstravels01 haha! Maybe a hardy traveller, but i still live in balmy Devon 😀
If I ever go back to Ireland one day, I might take the ferry. Some lovely views coming into Wales, great video
@@Sim0nTrains Yes, be sure to. The rail/sail on a number of routes is great value.

Despite being one of the greyest colour videos on the internet this was another wonderful watch. The ferocious weather actually looked like great fun … at least from the comfort of my armchair 😂
Cheers!
@@horsehollerer it was great fun. I watched the waves crashing over the bow for quite some time! And that little spot where i stood for the most of the time wasn't in too much of the bad weather.
Thanks so much for enjoying it. Even though it was indeed almost a throwback to old black and white telly! 👍
Experience of journey on ship is very enjoyful and beautiful. I am really enjoyed is this view with you. So good.

Another absolutely splendid video packed full of interesting information on a diverse range of subjects. And it is this 'commentary' which made the video very worth while. After all, except for the bit sailing into the harbour area at Milford Haven/Pembroke, there was not much 'scenery'!
@@Fan652w thanks Roger. It certainly was a bit of a grey one. But very interesting nevertheless.
Thanks for coming along 👍
I've travelled on Stena from Holyhead to Dublin several times for day trips ( live on Anglesey ). Stena often have ticket deals, making it more cost effective. The new shop " Estrid " is lovely 😍 and I always head for the restaurant with comfy chairs, big picture windows and breakfast 😂. The older ships are nice, but showing their age now and I find the older ships very cold travelling back on last ferry ( I bring extra clothing ). Ive not travelled on Irish Ferries, but might be when I move to Co Down next month. I prefer Stena, removals want Irish Ferries.
Very interesting. You certainly are a regular traveler. I had a good trip on the Estrid too.
Thanks so much for watching and best wishes for your move 👍
Thank you 😊. Holyhead Port is still closed following significant damage after Storm Darragh, just in case any of your viewers were thinking of a sea trip! Maybe open next Thursday 19th.
Thanks for that. That will be a major thread broken for quite some time. I hope everyone was ok and best wishes to all the port workers trying to get the service back!
Another good video 👍 That inc onward rail ticket deal with Stena sounds great value.
@@john07973 it is excellent. There's also a similar deal to /from Dublin!
Thanks for watching 👍
You can do a Duty Free Run with stena for £15 return Tuesday and Wednesday much better ship and the rail station is right outside the ship

Great little trip, as a previous poster has alluded, glad your sea legs are getting stronger.
@@kevinellis8869 Yes, I'm getting used to it a bit more now. In fact, as you say, i quite enjoyed it! 👍
We are definitely Stena (and Northlink) fans. The Stena Coach & Sail deals from Belfast to Edinburgh are really good and we’ve used the service multiple times now.
@@sandiandgregh Yes. I probably should show coach/sail deals next time I'm using the ferry. In fact it may just be Belfast/Edinburgh!
Best wishes to you both 👍
Great Video Johnny
@@paulgibsonphotography cheers Paul 👍
Excellent video as always!!
So interesting!!
I'm the same that I need to return to Rosslare Europort once everything is finished with the construction.
The Rosslare to Pembroke route is basically the place where the least capacity or oldest shop is put on and the route is long forgotten about which is a shame considering until the Cover Calais route operation started then the route was operated by the brilliant ship of the Isle of Inishmore.
It is a shame that neither national express/euro lines no longer pass through the port on the route from London to Cork and also that Megabus no longer operates to the port so if you do not have a car of you cannot drive then you're forced to use the trains and in that case it is easier to use Stena at Fishguard.
Hope all is well, take care of yourself
@@peterdnreynolds777 thanks Peter. Yes, agree with all that 👍
And thanks as always for watching 👍
@@JohnnyHooverTravels you're most welcome as always!! I forgot to ask where did you stay in Rosslare please
@ i stayed at St Martins guesthouse. Stayed both times I've been to Rosslare. Excellent accommodation.
I often travel on the ferry between Malta and Gozo, as I live in Malta, and trust me that when its windy it gets quite moving and shaky dsspite being a short ride.
I definitely need to try crossing over to Ireland by ferry. Especially with the Rail and Sail.Fare
@@enricomonti156 Yes indeed. The rail/sail is a very good deal!
The stabilisers are pretty good on these bigger ferries, but it is still fairly bouncy!

@@Prometheus_43 thank you 👍
When I take my bike on the ferry they let me put it in the trailer if it's not busy, which is nice if the weather is bad. I think that's the 4th different ferry they've had in 5 years. Brexit has reduced the amount of lorry traffic from Ireland to the mainland. That's also why there are more routes to Europe from Rosslare than before. The previous ferry had no facilities for foot passengers. If you do the route again, keep an eye out for Tusker Rock. It's a classic lighthouse on a tiny island. When you get closer to the welsh islands in nice weather you can see puffins and gannets at the right time of year. Another great video!
@@CMZPICTURES thanks! Yes, would love to cross on a calm sunny day sat out on the sun deck. That would be marvellous!
As you say, there's far less freight traffic travelling across the UK. A lot more going directly to Europe.
Thanks so much for watching 👍
Brexit hasn't reduced traffic from Ireland to the mainland, it has shifted a lot of it to direct routes that avoid transiting Britain.
@@alang5764 Indeed, when I wrote mainland, I should have said Britain. Sorry!
A tired old ship , now has hull damage berthing at Fishguard .they call it a technical issue. But the public knows more because of Facebook these days . Returned to service apparently, after that damage.
@@standrewpics thanks for that. What was it doing going into Fishguard?
@ diverted from Pembroke dock route to Dublin To Fishguard due to Holyhead port closure . Irish ferries having placed the larger and newer James Joyce on Pembroke dock to Rosslare route the normal Holyhead to Dublin ferry .
When are you crossing to the Isle of Man Johnny?
@@pattokchannel this may happen... but not sure when...
Love a rough crossing as the eateries are almost empty even if ship at capacity, only problem before effective stabilisers was trying to eat whilst hanging onto both plate and cup and saucer or wine glass, wedge into the corner of the fiddles sometimes worked. Didn't quite catch the ensign, was it a flag of Convenience? Europort has got a lot busier now Cork Ferry Port closed and more direct ferries to France, Spain and NL from Ireland. Customs paperwork has multiplied 10 fold for trucks to and from UK since Brexit even if only transiting. About time the old TIR reintroduced or a Customs Union but that would mean re-entering a conversation with the EU who are pissed about the UK leaving.
@@tonys1636 haha yes! They used to roll a lot back in the day!
It was registered to Limassol, so yes, flag of convenience...

@JohnnyHooverTravels your welcome 🙏 and continued success
Thanks for this trip down memory lane - used to take the eurolines coach frequently between London and cork when that existed, it used stena more often than Irish ferries. A bit of shame they have put an old ferry on the route but it’s the same at Stena with falling passengers numbers stena nordica isn’t a good as the previous stena Europe
@@jrfsp320 Yes, I suppose it is the way. Maybe one of the two routes will cease in the future, leaving just one sailing out of Rosslare 🤷♂️
The voyage did feel a little like the end of an era.
Thanks so much for watching too 👍
You seemed to know age of ferry as well some history in anything.
I heard Ireland were costy than UK or in Northern Ireland. I been Rooslare back in 2001/2002 from trip to France.
@@aaronweyl2272 there's no doubt that accommodation in general is quite expensive in Ireland. As for the other costs, I'd say they were pretty much the same as the UK.
Thanks so much for watching 👍
I remember a time when you confessed to inadequate sea legs--- a properJack Tar these days; well done!
@@colinriley123 oh yes. I've been on a lot of ferries since those days. Good memory Colin! 👍
My ferry of choice to and from Ireland.
@@18Reading71 thanks for that. Why do you think it better than the competitor? Be interested to hear.
And, of course, thanks so much for watching the video 👍
@JohnnyHooverTravels It's nothing special and down to familiarity more than anything. I find Pembroke Dock easier to get to and negotiate than Fishguard (although the frequency that I have been "randomly'" stopped and searched by UK Border Force there is becoming a bit of a bind). I think that the various Irish Ferries vessels over the years have tended to be quieter and less crowded than the Stena ones and I do like Irish Ferries Club Class offering.
I’ve noticed that walking passengers mostly have to board/leave ferries by buss, in the UK and Ireland.
It does depend on the route. But yes, it is not unusual.
Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for a pleasant but ruff journey. When you were approaching Pembroke did I noticed a tall bridge in the background. Was that the bridge in Wales that collapsed during it's construction?
@@Kulla1berg thanks! I don't know about the bridge thing? Might have mentioned it in the voiceover if I'd known about it!
@@JohnnyHooverTravels

Johnny please avoid Irish ferries if you can, what they pay their staff is shocking
@@shutup2751 thanks for the feedback. I shall bear that in mind 👍

It can't be as bad as how P&O Ferries now does with its staff and subcontracted workers who get pay way below minimum wage
@ you won't see a P&O ferry review on this channel for sure...
They knew their wages when they got interviewed and started
I disagree...they pay their agency staff properly and i think you have an axe to grind.
I am Japanese who's been living in the States for decades & always wondered if I could visit Ireland from Pembrokeshire, Wales ! I guess I wasn't thinking right as googled for Dublin . Lol. I'm not familiar with Roslare !
That's fun that they've got a duty-free shop inside ! 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶🛳💕💞
@@spark_6710 Yes indeed there are the two routes currently from Rosslare to the UK. This one and the route to Fishguard. Both Pembroke Dock and Fishguard have rail connections. Fishguard's is right next to the ferry whilst at Pembroke Dock you have to walk across the town for maybe 15 minutes.
The railway line between Rosslare and Dublin is one of the most beautiful in Ireland aswell. So well worth taking that route!
