John Madden made it sound like the Bengals did everything right on the 1st down play. He failed to mention that the Bengals left John Choma unblocked. John Facenda did mention that John Choma was not blocked in the Super Bowl XVI highlights episode.
Yes as a Bengals fan if Max Montoya our RG just touches him Pete Johnson was so huge that he would have carried the other Niners in the endzone. The missed block allowed John to grab on & slow Johnson down so the others could help.
I was seven years old. This was the first time I began to understand football. True story: this made me really like the 49ers as a boy growing up. It was helped by how bad my hometown team (Eagles) were from 1982 to about 1988. I'm all grown up now and ride with the home team, but this was fun watch. 4 plays and they couldn't get one measly yard in the biggest game of the season.
My grandpa knew bill Walsh, he was an amazing guy. When they would have dinner, bill would rarely mention football, normally he would talk about war or something like that.
Speaking of textbook: NFL Films' Super Bowl XVI highlight show has an excellent breakdown of each play of the goal-line stand, narrated by the legendary John Facenda: ua-cam.com/video/8bsGN9swsfU/v-deo.html
@@zagnorch1336 Exactly! That video demonstrates Cincinnati more failed to execute the play(s) as designed than the 49ers played tremendous defense. In addition, a very poor play call on 4th Down enabled the 49er defense to beat the line. If you listen to the CBS call, Madden suggests Anderson bootleg it. The video shows he would have likely walked into the endzone had that play been run.

Fun-fact: During the Super Bowl, linebacker Jack Reynolds had to pee. Badly. It was in the middle of the game and too far to head to the locker room. So, he told his teammates to crowd around in a huddle on the sideline so he could hide in the middle, drop his pants, and pee on the Detroit AstroTurf without cameras catching him. 49ers defensive coordinator Chuck Studley saw the impromptu meeting of his defense without him, burst in the middle, and got sprayed. True Story--look it up.
What made this goal stand even greater was the fact that at that stage in his career, Pete Johnson was virtually unstoppable at the goal line. Until that day. I remember watching it and when Jack Reynolds knocked him backwards on 2nd down, you could feel the 49ers were going to stop them. And they sure as hell did!
Honestly makes me feel a tiny bit better about the Hawks passing at the goal line, however if we'd just ran it, even if we didn't get in, I think the chemistry of the team remains instead of imploding like it did
It's amazing how many Super Bowls have stories of teams inside the 5 that couldn't score. Vikings in SB XI after the blocked punt when McClanahan fumbled. Broncos in Super Bowl XXI after a 1st and goal from the 1 yard line. The Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX against New England. And of course this one in Super Bowl XVI.
If I remember right, I think the Vikings were at around Pittsburgh's 5-yard line after a pass interference call involving Vikings WR John Gilliam & a Steelers defensive back (I think it was either Glen Edwards or Mike Wagner, but not sure). Chuck Foreman fumbled the ball and Joe Greene recovered. Funny thing is that a few plays later was the blocked punt, which Terry Brown scored on to make it 9-6 in Super Bowl IX.
Dan Bunz made a great tackle but, Ken Anderson threw the ball where Charles Alexander had to turn for the ball. Had Anderson threw the ball ahead of Charles then it's a touchdown.
Charles was supposed to get in the end zone first, then the throw would come. He cut his route short and it cost him because Bunz tackled him immediately.
