The captain America we have today is bc of Gruenwald. People forget how popular patriotism and over the top jingoism was in the 80s. Reagan, Wall Street, Rambo, etc. Cap could've gone in a very dark direction if Gruenwald hadn't grabbed hold and kept hold of the title and made sure he represented the very best in us
Squadron Supreme jogged before The Authority could crawl…some Clockwork Orange themes, but imagine Henry Cavill as Hyperion. A Squadron Supreme film would hold more impact than Eternals.
Started reading marvel as a first grader in 1980, and I read this Squadron Supreme comic when it came out as a kid almost going into middle school. It hit hard, opened up vistas of literary appreciation and no doubt set me on my path as a writer and reader of classic novels . Glad to see someone else appreciates Gruenwald as much as I do. Alan More got all the credit, much deserved, but ppl just jumped on the bandwagon, never realizing Gruenwald put out something as sophisticated as Watchmen before Moore did. And God how I loved and was waiting on Marvel Universe when it came out.t was the creeping start of sophistication in Marvel Comics. The first indication that this universe we loved was going to grow with us rather then staying a medium solely for children.
When I read squadron supreme as a kid my mind was blown and when I reread it as an adult my mind was still blown away . That was one of the best series that came from marvel . Mark gruenwald was truly a great writer and my only regret was he never got to do a sequel or further stories of them. Fortunately he did write captain America and that run is unmatched by anyone past or present who wrote cap
Great effort. I've never read any squadron supreme, apart from the occasional guest appearances in other titles, always assumed that they were a homage/parody of JLA - but can clearly see this "inspired" Watchmen, Kingdom Come, Injustice, the Authority and the Boys. Well now I feel stupid.
I love the Squadron Supreme they are my Justice League I love stories they are in but granted I do get tired of them constantly fighting the Avengers but I do enjoy them a lot of people need to check them out and also since this came out before watchmen it’s honestly a lot better than watchmen but yes thank you Smokey videos for doing a video about them I always enjoy your videos about comics and your humerus way you make your videos thank you
So this whole thing was a retcon then? They were originally just a throwaway villain team in a marvel story? If so would that make this the best comic retcon.
I wonder if the MCU will ever cover the Squadron. The mass confusion by general audiences would be hilarious though the "MARVEL STOLE FROM DC" braindead comments would definitely become more common and loud. edit - just ordered a paperback collection of Amazon. edit 2 - could you also do the same for DC? Ie. the different version of Angor.
i think its great that you dedicated this video to mark gruenwald, but i found it bizarre that nothing in the title or even description indicated that this video would be essentially a separate video from the title for half an hour. that the title video doesnt kick in until 30 mins have passed. didnt click for gruenwald stories, which again was very nice. but not what i signed up for, and i literally couldnt bc it wasnt in the title at all. how could i have known? sorry if this comes off as callous or facetious, but this felt like a bait-and-switch to get ppl to watch something they werent interested or knew they were interested in, although the part in question is valuable and worthwhile.
